Anything Else you want to add?

People are free to create any businesses they desire but the government is always the partial owner unless it is a media company. This allows the government to veto any decisions that could prove to be damaging to the citizens of Argyrland or its environment. The idea is to create an environment where competition is encouraged but the government may still keep a close eye on corporations and ensure that the prosperity of the nation is at heart.

All needs are provided for in Argyrland, the government provides small apartments that the people may live in for free. Fruits, vegtables, certain spices, certain meats, milk, bread, eggs and other basic food are payed for by the government and may be picked up at a grocery store free of charge. In both cases, the citizens must pay for upgrades from what is provided using their own income. Things that are deemed to be “Luxuries” by the government, such as T-Bone steaks, candies, lobster and other things that are unhealthy, unnecessary or both must be purchased using ones own money. A similar policy is for larger housing/property. If one wants a nicer home than what is provided, they must pay for it and maintain it themselves.

Population at most recent census: 146458404
Number of Active military personnel: 518400
Capital: Porthuropolis
Demonym: Argyrish (Argyrlander is also acceptable)
We speak Kreakiskos, a Hellenic language that was influenced by Anglo Saxon invaders
When speaking IC and we bring up numbers, assume we are using Duodecimal/Dozenal system numbers, not the base ten system you are used to. What that means is: "Δ" is ten, "Λ" is eleven and "10" is twelve.

Nation Name (Full): Imperial Dominion of Voltrovia
Type of Government: Bicameral parliamentary democracy w/constitutional monarchy
Is the legislature Independent? Yes
Was the leader democratically voted in? Yes
Was every member of legislature elected democratically? Not the House of Nobles, although they exercise very little actual power at all.
Does the nation have fair, free and open elections? Yes
Is the government Constitutionally Limited? Yes (although extensive prerogative powers technically exist)

Civil Freedoms:

Are people allowed to say whatever they want? Extreme sedition/extremism illegal
Are people allowed to own as many weapons as they want to? No...
Are people allowed to practice whatever religion they wish to practice Yes, broadly (some specific extreme cults outlawed)
Are people allowed to associate with whomever they want to Yes, excluding terrorists and subversives
Do citizens have a right to privacy? Yes
Do police need warrants with a probable cause? Yes (except under emergency powers)
Is murder, theft and other criminal activities legal? Illegal
Are soft drugs legal? Yes, but heavily restricted and taxed
Are hard drugs legal? No

Economic Freedoms:

What is the income tax rate? 32.5%
What is the Corporate Tax Rate? 7.5%
What is the sales tax rate? 12.5%
What is the tariff rate? Variable in certain industries, 7.5% base
How regulated is the economy from a 1-10 scale, 1 being no government regulations, 10 being a Communist Economy 4.7

Is the law privatized? Lawyers can work for the Imperial Crown, private firms or both to some degree. All courts are those of the state.
Is the government privatized? No
Is there a national currency, if so, is it backed by something hard? Yes, the Verta (V), which is backed by the robust, developed and powerful Voltrovian economy and the extensive reserves of Bundesbank Voltrovians [Central Bank of Voltrovia], as well as its international influence. The Verta is also one of the world's major reserve currencies.
If yes to the above question, are currencies other than the national currency legal? (this includes Cryptocurrencies like Bytecoin) For some transactions (where accepted) and exchanging, non-sanctioned/embargoed international currencies are legal. Bytecoin :) is legal, but the Bundesbank has made major moves towards its regulation (and normalisation), the situation being the same with the other cryptocurrencies we allow.
Is there a Central Bank? Bundesbank Voltrovians, one of the world's finest and most powerful.

Anything Else you want to add? Emergency Powers and Imperial Prerogatives are archaic and have never been fully used. They do exist but could never be exploited without a total coup at any rate. The government has interests in some critical industries and plays an important economic role, but in no way engages in the use socialist planning systems and employs a well-regulated but red tape-free industrial policy.

Voltrovia is low-tax (effective low tax, not Bush low-tax...) but has a large and potent government budget due to its powerful fiscal-economic situation.

Economic Freedoms:

What is the income tax rate? Federal income tax is a flat 17%, with additional local taxes 0-5% and state taxes 0-14%. There are a number of other forms of federal taxation; individuals may voluntarily opt-out of other forms of federal taxation by paying a flat 25% income tax rate.

What is the Corporate Tax Rate? Federal corporate tax is a flat 14%. Local taxes may be 0-5%, state taxes 0-14%.

What is the sales tax rate? Depends on jurisdiction. Most local areas have sales tax rates ranging from 0-9%. Groceries and prepared foods are excluded.

What is the tariff rate? Depends on the industry and good. There are a few non-protectionist tariffs, but most overall tariffs are being repealed.

How regulated is the economy from a 1-10 scale, 1 being no government regulations, 10 being a Communist Economy 3 or 4.

Are roads and other infrastructure privatized? To a degree, yes. Government agencies are required to employ private bodies in all circumstances possible, including the construction and maintenance of roads. However, most roads remain under government jurisdiction, varying based on the local, state, and federal level.

Is welfare and healthcare privatized? To a degree. The welfare system is increasingly privatized and a revamped healthcare system is focused on minimal government interference into the health insurance marketplace.

Is education privatized? To some degree. The government maintains a relatively large public schooling system, but a large number of private schools and educational institutions at all levels are available throughout the country.

Is the law privatized? If you mean law enforcement, to a degree. While government law enforcement bodies are generally present and administered at the local level (with state and federal law enforcement organizations also present in varying capacities), private police and security companies are increasingly popular for a number of roles.

Is the government privatized? No.

Is there a national currency, if so, is it backed by something hard? There is a fiat national currency, the United Republic dollar, that is generally accepted as legal tender.

If yes to the above question, are currencies other than the national currency legal? (this includes Cryptocurrencies like Bytecoin) Individuals may exchange goods and services through any medium desired as long as it falls within legal constraints regarding illegal substances. An exchange utilizing alternative electronic currencies is not prohibited as long as the currency in question is clearly distinguishable from the United Republic dollar.

Is there a Central Bank? Yes; the bank is a joint effort between public and private bodies to exercise monetary policy.

Anything Else you want to add? A non-governmental organization based in the United Republic, Liberty Watch, conducted a report which considered the United Republic among the freest countries in the Pardes region.

Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Nation Name (Full): The Unified Federation of Rejistania (in Rejistanian: Rejistaniha ivederalije lavamje)
Type of Government: Federational, tricameral, desynchronized, Hani-based democracy
Is the legislature Independent? Depends on your definition, I would say.
Was the leader democratically voted in? There are 3 leaders. While they were voted into the respective parliaments, the parliaments vote for the Lentine Mje'he
Was every member of legislature elected democratically? Yes (there occasionally are some issues, maybe some random backbencher ws elevated over the limit by cheating, but this is seldom and if discovered very harshly punished)
Does the nation have fair, free and open elections? yes
Is the government Constitutionally Limited? yes

Civil Freedoms:

Are people allowed to say whatever they want? yeah, unless they are calling to overthrow the state
Are people allowed to own as many weapons as they want to? yes (though Rejistania bans automatic weapons for civilian use)
Are people allowed to practice whatever religion they wish to practice yes
Are people allowed to associate with whomever they want to yes
Do citizens have a right to privacy? yes, this is something taken to extremes which few nations go to
Do police need warrants with a probable cause? yes
Is murder, theft and other criminal activities legal? no
Are soft drugs legal? mostly (there is a muddle of rekijonal and nantical laws), drugs you create for your own consumption are legal
Are hard drugs legal? depends (there is a muddle of rekijonal and nantical laws), drugs you create for your own consumption are legal

Economic Freedoms:

What is the income tax rate? 0%. The government knowing your income is an unacceptable breach of the citizens' right to pivacy
What is the Corporate Tax Rate? 2%
What is the sales tax rate? Depends on the class the good is in. From 0% for food to 90% for recreational drugs (Rejistania's income is mostly from sales taxes)
What is the tariff rate? It basically depends on the tier (on the highest tier are certain allies, on the lowest one semi-hostile nations with a known history of disregarding human rights) the other nation is in and can be a huge mess
How regulated is the economy from a 1-10 scale, 1 being no government regulations, 10 being a Communist Economy 3
Are roads and other infrastructure privatized? No, Jasikaism, the ideology most rejistani politicians ascribe to states that a strong economy grows from stable, state-run infrastructure
Is welfare and healthcare privatized? no for welfare, yes for healthcare
Is education privatized? optionally
Is the law privatized? no
Is the government privatized? no
Is there a national currency, if so, is it backed by something hard? The Kitivalha is backed by a combination of precious metals
If yes to the above question, are currencies other than the national currency legal? (this includes Cryptocurrencies like Bytecoin) yes
Is there a Central Bank? yes

Anything Else you want to add? Rejistania is a developing nation, with a somewhat bizarre government and movements calling for the dissolution of the union, so in some ways, it is rather centralistic (having a national language for example) in other respects, it is sometimes surprisingly free (while you need car insurance, you do not need government driving test and licenses and don't have to register your car in a government database, it is almost impossible for the government to use eminent domain)

Postby The Batorys » Tue May 20, 2014 3:47 pm

Nation Name (Full): The Empire Belonging to the Matriarch of the Batory Clan (it doesn't translate well, which is why in English either "The Batory Empire" or "The Empire of the Batorys" is used).
Type of Government: Absolute monarchy at the imperial level, with positions in national administration appointed on a meritocratic basis, with provinces governed in a semi-autonomous quasi-federalist manner. Provincial government types vary; some are constitutional monarchies, others are republics, etc.
Is the legislature Independent? At the imperial level, no. Who gets to decide how your property is run? You? Or groups of your tenants? Provincial legislatures are somewhat independent on matters concerning only their own provinces.
Was the leader democratically voted in? No. Tenants don't get to vote for their landlord. The Empress inherited the Empire from her mother, and so on.
Was every member of legislature elected democratically? See above.
Does the nation have fair, free and open elections? At the provincial level, yes. Having an unfair election would demonstrate that a province perhaps shouldn't be allowed to rule itself without imperial intervention.
Is the government Constitutionally Limited? No, the only limitation is the awareness that competent management is needed or people will live elsewhere.

Civil Freedoms:

Are people allowed to say whatever they want? Not quite. Criticism of Batory policy is allowed, but advocating to overthrow them is not, because why would they allow people to suggest stealing from them?
Are people allowed to own as many weapons as they want to? No. It is fine to own weapons for self-defense, home defense, or defense of one's loved ones, but military hardware is for the military.
Are people allowed to practice whatever religion they wish to practice The Empress is not concerned with her citizens' spiritual allegiances, only their earthly ones.
Are people allowed to associate with whomever they want to Yes, though occasionally one might be judged by the company one keeps. This usually only comes up in cases of organized crime.
Do citizens have a right to privacy? Mostly, yes. What subjects do in their own homes is not deemed to be the business of the Batory clan.
Do police need warrants with a probable cause? The police do, yes.
Is murder, theft and other criminal activities legal? That's an oddly phrased question. Criminal activity is illegal by definition, as if it were legal, it would not be criminal. Murder is illegal, although dueling is allowed provided there are written agreements and witnesses. Theft is, of course, illegal. Doing other subjects harm is generally why things are illegal. Some things, though, are legal that may not be elsewhere, public nudity, for example.
Are soft drugs legal? Yes.
Are hard drugs legal? Define "hard." Coca and opium are both legal. Some other substances aren't.

Economic Freedoms:

What is the income tax rate? Taxation, or rent, varies by income, and to some degree by province.
What is the Corporate Tax Rate? Variable.
What is the sales tax rate? There is no imperial level sales tax. Some provinces have sales tax, some don't.
What is the tariff rate? Varies widely depending on origin of goods and on the type of goods.
How regulated is the economy from a 1-10 scale, 1 being no government regulations, 10 being a Communist Economy Not sure if this really can apply. The Batorys manage their domain how they see fit. It's probably about "six" or "seven" on this type of scale, though in some specific cases it can be "one" or "ten."
Are roads and other infrastructure privatized? Depends on the definition. The Empire can be considered private property, so in a sense, yes, but also no, in that the Batorys provide the roads through their rule.
Is welfare and healthcare privatized? Same as above, though health care varies by province. It will probably all be Batory-provided soon.
Is education privatized? Same as above.
Is the law privatized? See above.
Is the government privatized? You could say that yes, it is, as the Empire is a family holding.
Is there a national currency, if so, is it backed by something hard? Yes, and it is backed by the might of the Batory clan. "Hard" currencies are idiotic, because they rely on elements that the society has little to no control over, and cause deflation if production of whatever's backing said currency doesn't keep up with population growth, leading to negative interest rates and therefore the end of loans.
If yes to the above question, are currencies other than the national currency legal? (this includes Cryptocurrencies like Bytecoin) Legal... but considered worthless.
Is there a Central Bank? Not in the sense as say, the RL USA. Currency is controlled by the Batorys directly.

Anything Else you want to add? The Batory Empire arose, originally, as simply the tribal territory of the Batory moroii clan. Those not of the clan but living in their territory were subject to their rule. While thousands of years have passed, the Batorys still think of the Empire this way, and consider it to be their property, technically owned by the Empress, their clan matriarch. While functionally it resembles other states, the fact that legally the entire thing is their private property does result in a few differences from the norm, here and there.
