Violent protests break out in wake of Turkish mine accident

Postby Gezi Park » Thu May 15, 2014 1:47 am

Violence has erupted in the industrial town of Soma, Turkey, the site of a mine collapse that killed at least 238 workers, as relatives of the dead and missing direct their rage at the Turkish government.

"These are usual things," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Wednesday, one day after the blast in the coal mine.

"I went back in British history. Some 204 people died there after a mine collapse in 1838. In 1866, 361 miners died in Britain. In an explosion in 1894, 290 people died there,” Erdoğan said, inexplicably ticking off mining disasters from 19th century England. The remarks echo a speech the prime minister gave in 2010 when 30 miners died in a coal mine incident in Zonguldak. He called their deaths "fate," then, which also sparked protests over their insensitivity.

As he spoke on Wednesday, crowds gathered outside the Soma Municipality building, chanting, "Government: resign!" while whistling and booing at his remarks.

Erdoğan then left the building to confront the crowd, creating a chaotic scene that led to him fleeing into a supermarket. Protesters threw rocks and fire bombs at police, who reportedly responded with tear gas and water cannons.

Now the protests are spreading throughout Turkey. A group hosted a die-in protest in Istanbul as others gathered outside the mining company's office. In the country's west, protesters donned miner's hats in a demonstration.

And who are we to judge about this man? All the stuff that we know about him was seen on television. But of course the media always speaks the truth, everyone who's not a democrat or is a 'racist' is a bad person.

Well let's judge PM Erdogan by his son then. What's he drive?

Seems that what happened here is that the PM made an insensitive comment. It's not actually the government's fault that an accident occurred in a 100% privately owned Turkish mine.

Punching incident amids protesters, Erdogan is claimed to have punched a young girl

Eyewitness report: "A 15-16 young girl shouted 'why is my dad's murderer here' then Erdogan hit her repeatedly"

Oh, yea, because governments should be free from being accountable to such fatal events that occured under their administration. Why did South Korean PM resign after the ferry incident? why did Latvian PM resign after the supermarket roof collapse? because rulers are directly responsbile for such cases.

Also as we see Erdogan's not escaping account and trying to justify the incident, though with ridiculous examples...

Most of those were eventually voted out, Erdogan's being elected over and over which is the problem here.

Erdogan for starters...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Berkin_Elvan

was a 14 year old teenage boy who was hit on the head by a tear-gas canister fired by a police officer in Istanbul while out to buy bread for his family
...
"Erdogan claimed that the boy was a "member of a terrorist organization" as he had his face covered by a scarf.

"This kid with steel marbles in his pockets, with a slingshot in his hand, his face covered with a scarf, who had been taken up into terror organisations, was unfortunately subjected to pepper gas,"

He's planning to run for presidency and y'know one needs over %50 in that. I believe his first defeat is awaiting Erdogan there's no way he can win this too while he is hated as hell by the other half of the society. Let's not forget that AKP's votes reduced back to %42 in the latest elections on March (with all these vote rigging scandals and such).

Yeah, the younger one. We both studied political science at the same university, he was a senior my freshman year. I had a political theory class with him. Couldn't really tell you much of value about him as a person, though, we spoke briefly a couple of times but we weren't friends or anything.
