Introduction of Fire (Baptism of Fire 38)

Postby Quintessence of Dust » Wed Apr 28, 2010 2:33 am

Welcome to the Democratic States of Quintessence of Dust, in the Green and Pleasant Region of Wysteria, for the Introduction of Fire, otherwise known as the 38th Baptism of Fire.

This tournament is taking place prior to the 51st NationStates Football World Cup, which will be held in Paripana and Septentrionia, and is intended for new nations announcing themselves to the world stage, or old friends returning from a lengthy absence.

Sally the Seal, mascot of the tournament, would welcome you if she weren't on fire

Scores are generated using a program called NSFootySim (NSFS). This combines a random number element with an RP bonus. This is a bonus that teams get for roleplaying during the 24 hour window prior to their match. Each day a cutoff will be announced (around 1300 UTC, after which no more RPs count, and then the scores are generated and posted. Because of this, roleplaying helps your team - but does not guarantee victory.

A third element of NSFS is ranking points, which will not be used in this tournament - because your teams don't have any. This is your first chance to earn some, and the ranking points your teams enter World Cup 51 qualifying with will depend entirely on your performance here.

The Introduction of Fire tournament strongly encourages active roleplaying from all participants. This makes it more fun for others taking part, more interesting to read, and helps establish storylines that could continue through many subsequent tournaments. It is a good opportunity to introduce your players, establish the culture of football in your country, and let us know about particular traditions, tactics, or trivia.

Roleplays commonly fall into one of the following categories:
- a match report, describing your previous match (example)
- a profile on one of your players (example)
- a behind-the-scenes storyline (example)

Any legitimate attempt at roleplaying will earn some bonus. Posts that feature humour, originality, references to other people's roleplaying, or show some degree of effort, will earn higher bonuses. In addition, you may like to consider the following themes:
- the tournament is taking place in Quintessence of Dust, where football is actually not very popular;
- the "Introduction of Fire" has been supported by a generous grant from the Department of Sport; however, this has necessitated a temporary renaming of the tournament, on account of the rigid secularist policies of the Quodite federal government;
- the World Cup held after this tournament will be, under some calendars, either the 100th or 200th anniversary of the first NSWC;
- the theme of the tournament is "Fairness, Fun, and Fruit".

The 40 entrants have been randomly drawn into 10 groups of 4. Each group has been assigned a different name based on a tasty piece of fruit, and all games within that group will take place at a different university around Quintessence of Dust.

Persimmon Group - University College Highmark, Highmark City
The persimmon is an edible berry of the ebony tree family. It is a popular part of Quodite cuisine, particularly among the large Quintessential-Chinese ethnic minority that forms about 20% of the nation's population - well over 50% of whom live in Highmark City, the nation's capital. UCH is the nation's largest university and generally considered the most politically neutral, as opposed to the staunchly Liberal UWS and pro-Social Democrat SUP.

    Tonarius
    Vjiay
    Negative Katana
    Khytenna

Almond Group - West Pulona Technical College, Pulona
Commonly mistaken for a nut, the almond is actually a fruit. There is little hope in cultivating it in Quintessence of Dust's cold weather, so it is an imported delicacy, although the advent of hyproponics has made it more available. Crepes amandine are especially popular. The favourite sport of West Pulonans is rugby, thanks to the world famous Tourseilles Rugby Club, so the small ground at the WPTC might not see too many fans turn out for the football games.

    Dennisov
    Zenethj
    Hillpiece
    Vyknov

Fig Group - Institute for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, Highmark City
One of three groups based in the nation's capital, Highmark, this group takes it name from a small, Mediterranean fruit that resembles some sort of extremely poorly slug. Since the advent of the Sweet Tooth Tax, which has made children's confectionery expensive, dried fruits - including figs - have become quite popular in Quintessence of Dust; however, the country's lack of Christian heritage or classical traditions means the symbolic fruit is largely shorn of connotations for most consumers. The IASSS is a prestigious postgraduate institute that is just pretentious enough to take a fleeting interest in sports.

    Western Cuba
    The Shinnian Islands
    South Norwega
    Hassett

Pineapple Group - State University of Pulona, Rahlia
Obviously, the pineapple is not native to Quintessence of Dust, but tinned pineapple has long been a staple of supermarket shelves. By contrast, the use of pineapple as a pizza topping is a serious criminal offence. Teams playing at Rahlia will find themselves in the atmosphere most supportive of football: the SUP has supplied many of the national team's players, and local sides Nowy Orpington United and FC Drongosnort are cheered on with wild abandon by the otherwise rather mirthless hardline Marxists of the university faculty.

    Inabi
    Sentient Nukes
    Rick Roll Land
    Sierra Apathia

Pear Group - University of Zyarn, Zyarn [games played at the Eli F. Baker Memorial Arena]
Lucky members of the Pear Group find themselves in a group named one of the more common fruits of Quintessence of Dust, as well as playing their matches at a full-sized stadium that has hosted over four and a half international football matches. Slightly less fortunately, they will otherwise be imprisoned in the frozen wasteland that is the south half of the country.

    Upper North Yorkshire
    Undeadzombiee
    Zarbli
    Mount Shavano

Plum Group - University of West Sponson, New Cleethorpes
The international flavour of coastal town of New Cleethorpes mixes an open-minded cafe culture with an unshattering belief that the rest of the country are morons. They have led wars of secession, twice, and lost, twice, and are now incredibly bitter. Unlike the sweet, juicy plum - which they grow hydroponically, but refuse to sell domestically for fear of giving their eastern adversaries a moment's pleasure. They hate football, and shoot to kill.

    Emothica
    St Timothy Isles
    Toy Toy
    Unitopolis

Elderberry Group - Grinwarick Central University, Highmark City
Elderberries are sweet, delicious, and provide the entire nutritional demands of an adult male. Well, they don't, but I like the cordial so I'll give them a break. In Quintessence of Dust the elderberry is regarded as an exotic specimen, much like cars with left hand steering, the sport of cricket, and the elderly. Few exotic specimens are present at the grey, grim GCU, a modern polytechnic/social training facility with wireless access, a canteen that serves lukewarm hot chocolate, and the pungent aroma of despair. Also carpet cleaner.

    Senzymnia
    Dimoniquid
    Parilisa
    Kazzoria

Gooseberry Group - University of Verinque, Veringia
The humble gooseberry is a hairy, unappealing blob that tastes surprisingly good, if you try to block out the mental image of devouring a live caterpillar. By contrast, there are no hairy, unappealing blobs at the University of Verinque: the nation's oldest and only fully private university, it has become known as the last refuge of the wealthy, Anglo-Quodite conservatives of the nation's centre, and their spoiled, moneyed, but irritatingly good-looking children. You'd want to punch them in the chin...if it wasn't so beautifully defined.

    Odinex
    Kryosis
    Aluetiva
    St Paul's Isle

Kiwi Group - University of East Sponson, Greater Scunthorpe Municipality/Slurry Reprocessing Orb
Also known as the "Chinese gooseberry" or "worst fruit ever", Quodites have more sense than to eat much kiwi fruit; when they do, it's generally only in fruit cocktail form. The UES a generous endowment from alumnus Eli Baker, son of the late President of the Democratic States, has ensured there is a top quality football pitch. They mostly use it for yoga class.

    Colurada
    Palatazze
    WalesaIreland
    Tarmeny

Cloudberry Group - Blaubeck University, Westhampton
The only edible fruit that was indigenous to Quintessence of Dust prior to human colonisation, the cloudberry is not really up there with apples or bananas in the world fruit pantheon. It can be used to make jam or liqueurs. But Quodites have a stubborn pride in their inventive cloudberry recipes, and hold the world's largest (and only?) annual Cloudberry Cook-Off every year in Westhampton, in the lower half of the Quodite Alps that line the country's north. Blaubeck is situated a little higher up, in beautiful scenic settings.

    Quattrablegia
    DRo Alba
    Chocolate Pencils
    Lovable Weirdos

Teams will play group games according to following schedule:
Thu 6 May: 1v4 2v3
Fri 7 May: 1v2 3v4
Sat 8 May: 1v3 2v4
Sun 9 May: 1v4 2v3
Mon 10 May: 1v2 3v4
Tue 11 May: 1v3 2v4

At the end of the group stage, the group winners plus the six teams with the next best records qualify for the Round of 16 playoffs.

From now until Monday, you have time to post your rosters. A roster should contain, at bare minimum, the names of your teams players. More detailed rosters could include their positions, their strengths and weakness, details about tactics, even mini-biographies. You should also include a guide to "RP permissions", indicating whether the person you are playing against can decide who scored your goals, whether any of your players earned yellow/red cards, whether there were injuries, etc. It is vital that you adhere to your opponents' permissions boxes when posting your own roleplays.

If there are any questions, please TG Quintessence of Dust.

Edit: The coach is Krum Johnsom, and he has a huge temper. He cannot play soccer, because he has taken the Zombiee treatment, which lets the person who takes it live 6 times longer, but they have the physical limitations of a zombie. He is currently 137 years old.

The Zombiee’s team roster is:

Starters-

F Randell Klinetob 24- He plays for Great Bone during the Zombiee league, and is an average player. A good attacking forward, he is very violent and short tempered, as seen by his two red cards and seven yellow cards from last season, which was 22 games. His shots are somewhat weak, but very accurate, but he is known for his phenomenal ball handling and passing abilities. He and Eric Wybenga are very tense towards each other.

F Erich Kalen 26- Kalen is a great teammate, but could definitely be a ball-hog because of his skills. He ripped apart the league with his Hauntspot team last season, scoring 19 goals in 22 games, including two hat tricks. He is a clean player, with only one yellow card in his lifetime. Even with his great skills, he prefers to pass the ball to a teammate rather than shoot it so much. In fact, his coach, Young Trilling, actually had to make a drill where Kalen was forbidden to pass once he got inside the box.

F Jarrett Reveal 31- A veteran with a lot of stories, Reveal is a great shooter, with a magic touch. He has been traded often though, because he often gets into fights with teammates. In the last five years, he has played for 4 teams, most noticeably a stop in Hauntspot for 9 games. Surprisingly enough, he and Kalen became friends, but everyone else hated him. Quite a ball-hog, Reveal plays erratically, some days looking like the next Kalen, some days looking like he wouldn’t make the imaginary under-21 team.

MF Jonas Dollings 19- Straight out of playing U-18 ball at his local parks, and becoming a one-man football show, dribbling left and right, Dollings was selected for the national team. This really will be an Baptism Introduction of Fire for him, because he has never played any competition other than the U-18 games, but scouts were convinced he was so good; they signed him on the spot, and convinced the coach to let him start. This will be subject to change, and expect it to come very quickly if he doesn’t perform.

MF Russ McCullough 27- The most experienced of a young group of midfielders, Russ is most famous for his controversial ad for a television set, saying that setting it up was so simple a “Zombiee could do it.” He then had to have protection for a month from raging Undead.
He is a great mentor for all of the midfielders, and passes the ball to everyone. He was also voted “Best Teammate”, at the Zombiee league break (similar to the All-Star break for baseball).

MF Alphonse Groeschel 23- The Groester, as he is known as by teammates, was a average player until he had a breakout season with South Coffin. Now a better player and defender, he is truly a force to be reckoned with, and isn’t afraid to get dirty. Surprisingly, he wants to be a kindergarten teacher.
“Red card! Go sit in the time-out chair… NOW!!!”

D Tommie Pagley 37- Pagley is a great player to build a defense around, because he can easily defend half the field, and is a shutdown defender close up. With seemingly limitless reserves of stamina, he holds the mile and ten mile Undeadzombiee records. He plans, if the 2nd Track Championships don’t collide with the regular season, to participate in those.
Pagley is known for his love of money. He has a shrine in his house dedicated to money. He has even made up (or discovered the existence of, if you ask him) the god of money, Cha-Ching. Personality tests have shown him to be slightly unstable.

D Carl Kilburn 26- Kilburn was recently discovered by Skulltown, and hired for a cheap $S5,000 a game, which would equal $142,670 a year, a cheap price considering that for only the Baptism of Fire, Kilburn will be paid $2,594,000. He was at first excited when he made the team, but quickly turned bitter when he found out he made less than 10% of the average player made, even though he was a starter. His frequent complaining made him a sub, and he complained more, so he was traded to North Coffin to end the year. Not much is known about his skills from playing in only 5 games, but the coaches took a gamble, and are praying it pays off.

D Craig Hofer 29- Hofer is one of the middle defenders for the team along with Pagley, and is ranked at #4 in the Zombiee league defensively. A great player, he is a shy person away from the pitch. He occasionally takes the ball very far downfield, and had 12 assists in 22 games, 1st for defenders. If you get into his private circle, he turns hilarious, but in a kind, not sarcastic way. An above average defender overall, but starting because of his offensive boost.

D Antonio Blanding 28- Blanding is an above average defender, with a knack for annoying people. He isn’t flashy on field, but gets the job done. Off field, though, he is immediately recognized by his gold suits, gold cars, gold cell, and gold everything else. This annoyed his teammates of his rookie team, Grave Diger, he actually was chased for two miles, until he got to the nearest police station. He has a $S100,000,000 ($129,700,000) house, painted gold of course.

GK Bruce Armour 25- Bruce is suspected to be a relative of Plastic Man, he is so big. A commanding 7’2” presence in the net, he is also quite quick, and can destroy opponents hope of a comeback. Bruce is quit fun to cover and to be with, and is a great example to other players that, yes, you can be a great person and a great player.

Subs:

F Carlos Nicks 24- This is another case of a huge ego causing a great player to fall. He wanted to play for Hauntspot during the Zombiee league season, and was forced to sit on the bench. His tremendous U-18 tapes convinced coaches to check him out. They finally decided that since the forwards were so good Nicks could start in place of Jonas Dollings, as a midfielder. But Nicks wanted to play forward, and so he is stuck on the bench as fourth forward.

F Colton Herschaft 37- Colton was a great player at his prime, including a 11-game scoring streak that propelled Hauntspot into a final from sixth place in 7 games. Now he is waning, but still was good enough to make the finals.
Long ago, he decided to become a defensive forward, because being a pure striker didn’t appeal to him. He is now the #7 defensive forward in the Zombiee league. His team right now is North Coffin.

MF Santo Ennish 28- Ennish is a skilled ball handler, but lacks in the shooting and defending departments. He is a great guy to hang out with, and is very open. He loves the atmosphere of Zombiee City, so he plays there, for a division II team, and makes only $S100, 000 a year, probably a tenth of what he could be making.

MF Man Dolven 21- Man was eligible for the U-21 World Cup, but didn’t participate, saying, “I really needed to train with the World Cup team, and Ghoston. That has worked out for him, since he has led Ghoston to 5-0-2 start, and will be the fifth midfielder. Man can take down any forward that heads his way, and isn’t too bad defensively either.

D Ellsworth Morkve 25- The second-youngest defender, Morkve has yet to mature. He has a great mentor in Craig Hofer, and is expected to start once Tommie Pagley retires. Morkve isn’t a great runner, so he is good at a side slot, and often requires Pagley to cover a bit of his area too, when he gets in the game. Morkve is a shutdown defender, and once he gets the ball, can dance with it for quite a bit, until someone gets open.

D Granville Friedstrom 33- As a child, Granville was so poor he had to use a balled up sheet of paper as a soccer ball. It helped him a lot, because he had to account for the unpredictability of the ball, and learned that it isn’t important how hard you kick the ball, but how accurate you kick it. A great passer and dribbler, though there is a reason why he is sixth defender. He isn’t great at strategy, and is terrible against teams who pass a lot.

GK El Bailido 21- El is mad at Armour, and at the coaches, because he thought he should have been the starter. Very luckily, another goalkeeper wasn’t found, and he is still the second string goalie.

If my opponent RP's first he may:
Choose my goalscorers
Give out yellow cards
Give out one red card
Choose the weather
Give out injuries
Choose my substitutions
He MAY NOT:
Godmod anything
Tell the severity of the injury
(that's up to me)

Please use the player bio's for scoring, cards, and subs. For instance, don't give Erich Kalen a red card for screaming and punching the ref both times you see me, because his bio says he has only had one previous yellow card.

Thank You!

After the Toiletdonia International Fiasco, Coach Paulo Gomen announced some changes in the 23 players representing Zarbli in the Introduction of Fire, a.k.a. Baptism of Fire 38. The list is now more heavily based on roosters of Warriors and Asia FC, champion and runner-up of the last Duke League. Here's the list:

POS NUM PLAYER CLUB
GK [1] Gabriel Kasapa (Billiard)
RWB [2] Migelito Treta (Knights)
CB [3] Elizabef Uindsor (Knights)
CB [4] Uiston Txartxhil (Warriors)
DM [5] Uiliam Ualase (c) (Warriors)
LB [6] Al Maome (Asia FC)
CF [7] Livia Karazaua (Asia FC)

DM [8] Napolean Bonaparte (Battle)
CF [9] Hei Leonidas (Warriors)
CM [10] Jenio Aladin (Romans)
LW [11] Txak Nohis (Warriors)

GK [12] Louis Burbon (Knights)
RB [13] Puman Xu (Asia FC)
CB [14] Samira Miki (Warriors)
CB [15] Duke Uelinton (Battle)
DM [16] Turko Raxid (Asia FC)
LWB [17] Enrike Tudor (Knights)
CF [18] Juliana Duna (Pyramid AC)
DM [19] Daniel San (Warriors)
CF [20] Bandebola Norman (Cannibals)
CM [21] Ma'nes Disisparta (Battle)
CM [22] Nikolau Rasputin (Asia FC)
GK [23] Mia Mumia (Pyramid AC)

Formation wise, Gomen seems to have chosen a slightly more defensive scheme, to avoid taking as much goals as in the third and second games of the Toiletdonia friendly tournament. The only change in the back players is the Right Wing Back HM Prince Migelito Treta entering to give a little more mobility to the right side of Zarbli's team. In the middle, Raxid will take the place of Bonaparte, giving more quality to the pass and helping Aladin to create plays. Nohis, one of the best players of the Toiletdonia International along with Karazaua will assume the left side of the attack, and finally, Norman will enter as the main striker of the team.

-----------Kasapa-------------
------------------------------
------Uindsor--Txartxhil------
Treta--------------------Maome
------------------------------
---------Ualase---------------
----------------Raxid---------
-----Aladin-------------------
---------------------Nohis----
------------------------------
-----Karazaua-----------------
-------------Norman-----------

Hopefully this team will bring a little more joy to the Zarblese people and wear a little more proudly the Zarblese colors.

Here are the 22 players selected to take part in the BoF tournament.
You may read the list as follows: Shirtnumber, name, (position), current squad and sex (football in Dennisov is a mixed sport)
Postitions:
GK- Goalkeeper
DF- Defender
MF- Midfielder
FW- Forward

For all the people wanting to write a RP part, be free to write whatever you want. I would appreciate it if you keep the players in their respective position. Although Ice hockey is by far the most popular sport in Dennisov, the players do know what is expected of them.

The history of football in Dennisov is not nearly as rich as some of the nations, however a team of Dennisov has won the World Cup in the distant past. Team colours are yellow and blue. There are no players currently playing outside Dennisov. Unlike the team that won the World Cup, it will try to play an attacking style of football and as the main sport is Ice hockey, players can be expected to be physical.

1. Mason L'Hiver (GK) - Cervantes M
2. Paul Hervé (DF) - Arrilov M
3. Iven Lepage (DF) - Arrilov M
4. Simone Lejeune (DF) - Cervantes F
5. Étienne Goguen (MF) - Cervantes M
6. Arlette Coulombe (MF) - La Mancha F
7. Richard Bourgouin (MF) - La Mancha M
8. Robert Archambault (MF) - Havena M
9. Javier Coulombe (FW) - La Mancha M
10. Alexis Ménard (FW) - Havena M
11. Danielle Charpie (FW) - Lionspride F

12. Louise Desnoyers (GK) - Havena F

Kazzoria puppet of Toiletdonia. We are a nation simple folk always aiming to get the best over they're neighbours but instead of getting a more expensive car to make the other jealous we shoot them. The government has shot most of the good footballers for breaking some fat old ladies window. They then shot the fat old women for moaning. We have written letters to the government of Toiletdonia for an Independent football league to them and an International team roster and this is the letter back from the Toiletdonian Association Of Football (TAOF)
TAOF response to Kazzoria football independents letter wrote:I am afraid since you have to little teams to compete in your own league we are going to say no. Your nation is too small and violent for it so we decline we will keep Cordian City rovers as part of our league because they want to. Secondly I think we speak for every Kazzorian and Toiletdonian citizen here when I say yes you may have a roster pick 20 of your finest players and 1 manager/coach at least.

Here is the roster:

GK- Liam Rind
GK- John Low
GK- Jim Cole

DF- Luke Darrens
DF- Jerry Long
DF- Perry Stead
DF- Brent Lee
DF- Mike Harrison
DF- Jack Linster

MF- Harry Short
MF- Will Gerrem
MF- Frank Leaf
MF- Stewart Broad
MF- Garry Swam
MF- Lio Darrens

FW- Liam Miller
FW- Bob Lee
FW- Brian Tash
FW- Matt Johnson

Manager- Terry Barrymore
Assistant Manger- Joe Perry
Coach- Tim Harold

Finally, it was time. The biggest sports event that the Zombiee’s would even have a shred of a chance to win. The Introduction of Fire. It sent shivers down Krum Johnsom’s spine, every time he saw that name. Not that he would tell the players. Ever. Not because he was holding secrets, just that he wanted them to have a bold and fearless leader to look up to. And, nerves were contagious. He wouldn’t need to help spread them.

He called his #1 assistant, Camilo, into the room. “Hmmm, very good, very good. Let’s see, pear group… us, Upper North Yorkshire… who are they? Well, I guess we’ll find out. Zarbli, and Mount Shavano. Not a bad draw. Zarbli was in the Toiletdonian International. Last in their group, and no other experience (OOC: to my knowledge. Please correct me if I am wrong). I am quite glad that we participated in the Warkus league, and now the Toiletdonian International, it gave us valuable experience. We will be unstoppable.”

“I hope,” replied Camilo, “that we at least make it to the round of sixteen. Even making it that far would be nice.”

“Yes, it will be hard making that, seeing as most group will only get one representatives. Darn Quintesians who just want to get us out of their country. How could they not like football? Well, hopefully many won’t want to go to the Pear Group stadium.”

“Why? What is so bad about it? It’s just a stadium!”

“Well, it is in the frigid cold, and that may also affect play. Also, nobody will show up in below zero weather for a sport they hate just to boo two teams that they have no interest in. And the stadium has been declared a curse, by the Q people.” (OOC: I will refer to the QoD people as the Q people from now on)

“Really! Did they lose a match in the stadium?”

“No! Worse than that! It has hosted four and a half soccer games. The Q people have a strong hatred for soccer. I mean strong. Well, most of them. Apparently, they had a very tough time passing hosting this through the government. But their sports department funded it. On one condition though, that it be renamed the Introduction of Fire.”

“Well… that’s not weird.”

Suddenly, an aide rushes in. “Sir, I have Football Weekly’s annual style ratingsfor you! We have a ranking of +2. And our team is ranked 254th in the world.”

“Thank you. Please make an announcement to all of Undeadzombiee announcing that we will probably get to around 200th if we do as expected.”

“OK Camilo, I have to speak to the team now. Thank you for your help.”

“No problem.”

The Vjiayan National Football Team, managed by one Winston Thatcher, arguably the greatest manager ever to lead a Vjiayan team and still of an age of just sixty-four years has just been announced. It is a mixture of the best players Vjiay has to offer. Bitter rivals in the domestic leagues and cups, but now united for Vjiay, they will lead our hopes and aspirations in the upcoming Introduction of Fire (Better known as the Baptism of Fire) and then on to the World Cup. I'm sure all of Vjiay is behind them and, on behalf of our hopeful people...Good luck boys.

OOC: I've listed that my players have caps, that gave me more to write about as well as giving people an insight into their effectiveness. I've never roleplayed NS sport :P

Image

Goalkeepers:

Herbert Holmes (GK)
Age: 32
Caps: 37
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Bowery
Number: 1
Bio: Currently the most experienced player in the Vjiayan national side, tall and imposing he has kept nine international clean sheets out of the thirty-seven appearances he has made. He is the first choice keeper at his domestic club, Bowery, who are sitting third in the Vjiayan Premier League. His strengths would be his size, measuring 6’5; he has a good dive and is known as a good penalty stopper. However, many of the goals he concedes are down low, due to his tallness he is sometimes unable to reach low, and he is known for the occasional wayward kicks. Some pundits say he may lose his grip on the first team goalkeeper place in the upcoming world cup.

Alistair Barker (GK)
Age: 26
Caps: 3
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Greatsidle United
Number: 19
Bio: He was described by the Greatsidle United coach as simply, ‘A brick wall’. Sure, a cliché, but clichés are often the truth, and using this term to describe Barker wouldn’t be an overt stretching of the imagination. Greatsidle United have played twenty-eight league games this season, conceded just nine goals. Pundits across Vjiay tip Barker to be the first team choice at NSWC51.

Taylor Breasley (GK)
Age: 20
Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Toddlesham City
Number: 25
Bio: A young, consistent keeper playing for a high level domestic club. Has proven effective in goal at Toddlesham, but has moments of madness if his nerves get the better of him. He generally needs a good save under his belt early on in a match, to settle his nervousness, after he has them under control he is a deft shot stopper.

Defenders:

Alan Brown (RB)
Age: 23
Caps: 16
Goals: 1
Domestic Club: Greatsidle United
Number: 2
Bio: Has decent experience at international level and is the first choice Right Back at Greatsidle United, who currently sit top of the VPL, with an astonishing defensive record of just fifteen goals conceded in forty games (all competitions) so far. His main strength is his pace and his heading, he can, however often be outmatched for strength if running at speed and is known to slide in quite readily.

Vince White (RB)
Age: 29
Caps: 24
Goals: 1
Domestic Club: Sway County
Number: 4
Bio: Quite experienced at international level but is currently second choice to Alan Brown when selection for the first team comes around, due to his lack of pace in comparison to Brown. White however is a solid right back, good strength and composed in most situations. He is a particularly good crosser of the ball, when running the right wing overlap.

Alfred Higgins (CB)
Age: 28
Caps: 25
Goals: 3
Domestic Club: Umbrage
Number: 5
Bio: Current club captain at Umbrage and vice-captain of the Vjiayan national side. Despite standing at only 5’9, Higgins possesses immense upper body strength and is one of the faster members of the team. He is usually the target when the opposing team is using the long ball tactic, and direct free kicks and corners due to his height, however when the ball is on the ground, the last person the opposing attacker wishes to see is this man.

Johnny Carr (CB)
Age: 31
Caps: 32
Goals: 2
Domestic Club: Twain City
Number: 15
Bio: The epitome of cool, Carr is the captain of both his domestic and national team. Despite losing a yard or so of pace in recent years, he is still an extremely valued member of the team and remains one of; if not the best centre backs Vjiay has to offer. He is good at heading the ball, as well as a solid passer and can, of course, tackle in every circumstance. He is rarely embarrassed by an opponents’ skill and will likely leave them on the floor wondering where the ball went.

Dimitar Hamel (CB)
Age: 19
Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Toddlesham City
Number: 22
Bio: Despite being touted as a future star of Vjiayan football, Hamel has still been seen as a risky take to the World Cup. This is mainly due to his age and inexperience at club and national level. He has made around twenty appearances for Toddlesham United this season, who are sitting second in the VPL and has impressed with his pace and heading ability. He has, however revealed a somewhat rash aspect of his personality and has been sent off once in his twenty appearances and been booked seven times, many put this down to his inexperience.

Stefan Jackson (LB)
Age: 30
Caps: 19
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Umbrage
Number: 12
Bio: Decent experience at international level, with fourteen years spent at his domestic club, Umbrage. He is perhaps average for the Vjiayan team when it comes to strength, but is below average for speed and his main strength is his positioning. He has often been criticised for his lack of pace; however, he will rarely be seen to be being outran by the opposition, as he is often in a perfect position to tackle someone before even they know that that’s where they’re going. He refers to this uncanny skill as his ‘sixth sense’.

Terry Scott (LB)
Age: 31
Caps: 26
Goals: 2
Domestic Club: Sway County
Number: 3
Bio: Currently second choice for Vjiay behind Jackson. He is a solid left back, with decent pace, heading ability and strength in the tackle. He is, however, prone to the odd unexplainable decision, such as the Vjiayan Champions Cup final of 2006. The game was heading for extra-time when Scott, in the last minute passed a ball far too short back to the keeper, who, despite valiant efforts failed to get to it before the opposing striker did and the rest, as they say is history. (A moment that still makes County fans cringe)

Midfielders:

Malcolm Eustice (RM)
Age: 28
Caps: 30
Goals: 11
Domestic Club: Toddlesham City
Number: 7
Bio: First choice right wing midfielder for Vjiay and Toddlesham, is fast, strong and possesses great vision. He is somewhat lacking in the ball skills department however he makes up for this with his speed and stamina. Will often be seen clearing balls from the edge of his own box and then thundering up the pitch to help the counter attack. Overall an excellent right winger and arguably one of Vjiay’s finest players.

Udall Stracke (RM)
Age: 29
Caps: 4
Goals: 1
Domestic Club: Greatsidle United
Number: 17
Bio: A relatively late find by Greatsidle United, but has impressed since his signing in 2008, so much so that his performances in the 08/09 VPL season (32 apps, 9 goals, 13 assists) warranted a national call-up. He is extremely quick, has good dribbling skills and decent strength, but sometimes fails to get back to help defend, often leaving the right back outnumbered.

Quentin Watson (RM)
Age: 21
Caps: 1
Goals: 1
Domestic Club: Toddlesham City
Number: 12
Bio: Another young gun, called up on suggestion from his teammate, Malcolm Eustice. Possesses excellent pace, dribbling skills, heading ability and stamina, but can sometimes let his temper get the better of him and is sometimes guilty of diving, as well as not getting up quick enough or helping to retrieve the ball if he loses it. He has great potential if he gets these little quirks out of his system, but scored a stunning free-kick on his Vjiay debut. For Toddlesham he has played in the centre of midfield as well as in the forward position.

Terrance Chamberlain (CM)
Age: 25
Caps: 16
Goals: 3
Domestic Club: Twain City
Number: 6
Bio: Perhaps one of the more defensive minded midfielders in the Vjiayan side, he is often used as such for his domestic club, sitting just ahead of the defensive line. He has decent pace, good ball control and a cool head. He works best when given time, time which he usually uses to pick out thirty yard passes. When hounded, however, he is often pressed into making a mistake and losing the ball.

Charles Flinchum (CAM)
Age: 27
Caps: 12
Goals: 3
Domestic Club: Laurus United
Number: 8
Bio: An attacking midfielder that often sits on the edge of the centre circle, or if on the attack at the edge of the opponents’ area. Works best when coupled with a defensively minded midfielder, due to his reluctance to get back and defend. He is, however, capable of bossing the possession in midfield as he has deft ball control and dribbling skills, as well as a keen eye for a pass. He will sometimes go for the more difficult thirty-yard shot, when a clear pass was available and squad mates can get frustrated with him for it. However, he has silenced many of them when the thirty-yard screamer nestles in the top corner of the goal.

Phil Freeman (CM)
Age: 32
Caps: 29
Goals: 3
Domestic Club: Aeledge
Number: 16
Bio: Coming to the end of his international career, but is still a solid squad player who can be given the holding midfielders job or the midfield maestro job. He is of solid build, lacking pace but able to hold off many tackle attempts. He has a cool head and spots passing opportunities that younger, less experienced players may not.

Oliver Shetty (CM)
Age: 24
Caps: 9
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Twain City
Number: 13
Bio: An inexperienced squad member that doesn’t really do much wrong, but in recent years has been unable to break into the starting eleven due to the successes of the Chamberlain-Flinchum partnership. He possesses good skill, good pace and a good eye for a pass. He is a regular starter for Twain City alongside Chamberlain and as such has a good relationship with him. Despite not scoring many goals (In the 08/09 VPL season for Twain, he made 37 appearances, scoring three goals) he gets many assists, as well as making passes early on in moves that lead to goals. Is certainly one for the future, if needed he can play on the right wing.

Todd Whelan (CM)
Age: 19
Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Greatsidle United
Number: 14
Bio: Another risky yet ultimately required call-up to the national side. Before signing for Greatsidle at the beginning of the 09/10 VPL season, he burst onto the scene for Vrick Town, helping them avoid relegation in the 08/09 season with six goals in the last ten games of the season, with Vrick staying up by a point. There are ultimately two sides to this player, for one, he is capable of the beautiful. An example of this is his goal against Toddlesham United in the last game of the 08/09 season, where he took the ball on the half way line, skinned three players before unleashing a missile of a shot from twenty yards out which left the keeper standing still as it rocketed into the roof of the net. However, he is also capable of the ugly, such as his drunken bust up with a footballer from a Division Two side after the 08/09 season, which lead to him being suspended from the first three games of the 09/10 season with Greatsidle.

Dwayne Lightfoot (LAM)
Age: 29
Caps: 5
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Laurus United
Number: 11
Bio: There isn’t really a first eleven left winger automatically picked for Vjiay, the choice largely depends on the opposition. To pick Dwayne Lightfoot, the Vjiayan manager may think that the opposition team is susceptible to rapid runs down the wing, accompanied with astounding dribbling skills, against such teams international experience may not be a dramatic factor. A team with Lightfoot would suggest an attacking mentality, Lightfoot rarely gets back to defend, but will certainly be at the centre of most attacks and strikes fear into the hearts of defenders in the VPL.

Zander Payne (LM)
Age: 30
Caps: 25
Goals: 4
Domestic Club: Twain City
Number: 17
Bio: Payne, however, brings strength, stamina and experience to the table. He is more of a passer of the ball than Lightfoot is, spraying pinpoint passes over dozens of yards seemingly at will. He will also cover his left back and is always seen defending in his half and indeed, penalty box. He will then join in the counter-attack. Despite lacking in pace, he will certainly be around to pick out a through ball if the attack needs it.

Forwards:

Alex Clarke (CF)
Age: 20
Caps: 1
Goals: 2
Domestic Club: Toddlesham United
Number: 10
Bio: A recent call-up due to an outstanding season for Toddlesham, scoring 27 goals in thirty nine appearances, and not having a single booking or red card against his name. He is quick, skilful and strong but lacks heading ability and is significantly weaker on his left foot compared to his right. (22 of his goals in the VPL this season were on his right foot) He is somewhat of a risk in terms of his experience but it is believed that he will play a vital role in the upcoming world cup and is touted to be a regular starter, after his two goals in his international debut.

Arnold Wrede (CF/AM)
Age: 29
Caps: 21
Goals: 6
Domestic Club: Twain City
Number: 9
Bio: Wrede is an effective, calm, down-to-earth centre forward. He possesses decent pace, good striking ability and good dribbling skills. Most essential to his game, however, are his positioning and his vision. He is criticised at international and at club level for his somewhat low score tally and perceived lazyness. However, he is almost always involved in the build up play to goals scored for Twain and Vjiay, having picked out through balls our made space for himself to make a direct assist to the goal. Fellow players and managers alike recognise his ability as both a goal scorer and a playmaker, both sets of professionals having repeatedly asked for the media criticism of him to stop. He is usually played just off of the centre forward, providing an effective link between him and the midfield.

Mike Apsey (CF)
Age: 28
Caps: 19
Goals: 9
Domestic Club: Laurus City
Number: 24
Bio: Largely used as an impact player, Apsey is effective when not injured. Again, he is seen as another risk, as he has played just sixteen games of the 09/10 season. Despite this, he has scored eight goals and, as a natural finisher pundits suggest that he will be used as a super sub if Vjiay need a goal.

Warner Gibson (CF)
Age: 18
Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Domestic Club: Umbrage
Number: 23
Bio: Touted for future excellence, Gibson is certainly on the way up. Having signed for Umbrage in 2008, when just sixteen he has since scored twenty five goals in sixty appearances, a good feat considering the mid-table performances of Umbrage in the past two seasons. Again, will likely be sent on when Vjiay is desperately searching for goals.

Substitutes:

Barker (19)
Hamel (22)
Shetty (13)
Apsey (24)
Watson (12)

Due to the relative inexperience of the Vjiayan National Team, the first few games in particular will be tentative, whilst the largely new team learns to play effectively together.
They will play in the 4-4-2 'Diamond', but could also be called the 4-1-2-1-1-1 formation, placing particular emphasis on wing play, with through and long balls played frequently to take advantage of the speed of the front pair. A defensive midfielder will occupy the role of sweeper sitting just ahead of the defensive line, with a player (Wrede) sitting just off the the forward to provide a more effective link with he midfield.

SOUTH NORWEGAN TEAM ANNOUNCED!
Today's team was announced by the SNFF in a lavish ceremony. However, it immediately attracted criticism by some as they called it a mere "re-branding of the Rugby team", due to the exact similarity between the names and appearance of the players. The SNFF immediately denied such rumours as ridiculous, and stated that they had bought the players fair and square from the Rugby Football Federation. The team shall adopt a 5-3-2 tactic, with star forward Tony Blair acting as the team's captain.

STARTERS:
14- GORDON BROWN (Forward)
1- TONY BLAIR (C) (Forward)

15- EDWARD HEATH (Defense)
9- ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME (Defense)

Hosting Announcement

In order to allow all teams time to post their rosters and preliminary RPs, the competition has been pushed back 5 days. Matchday 1 will now be scorinated at 1300 UTC on Thursday, May 6th.

The in-character explanation for this is that the original tournament programmes contained a serious typographical error, misspelling the word "President" as "Foaming Twat" ("Foaming Twat James F. Dwight will be in attendance at the opening ceremony"). That the printing press was based in Social Democratic stronghold Nowy Orpington was a coincidence not lost on Liberal President Dwight. The tournament has been delayed so that amended programs can be printed off in New Cleethorpes.

“OK men, this is the chance we have been looking for,” the coach said as he was addressing the team, “this is the way we can prove ourselves. None of the events you guys have participated in were even medium sized. They were all small, and controversial (OOC: I’m not kidding). The Warkus Professional Soccer League. The hosts pitted us against the same teams twice is a round robin round, and also wrote their own tables, which were flawed.”

“But Coach,” exclaimed Tommie Pagley, “our record is 5-1-3! We only have one loss! Our team is on a roll!!! Shouldn’t you give us a little bit of credit, I mean, we won Warkus!”

“That is exactly the reason I will not give you any breaks. You should have wanted to go 11-0-0, and won Warkus, and Toiletdonian. You guys haven’t proven yourselves, and this is where you do it. If you win this, it will look really good in my sig -er- on the team’s trophy cabinet. Plus, both tournaments were controversial. I mean, it seems as if the Zombiee’s can’t win anything without a controversy. The Track Championships, the Warkus, the Toiletdonian. If we don’t break this pattern soon, we won’t be able to convince anyone to compete for us.”

“RING RING RING RING RING!!! YOU HAVE NEW MAIL,” screamed Antonio Blanding’s phone.

“Hello… I’m in the locker room, I can’t really talk… WHAT!?!... So our game has been pushed back… really?... Wow, idiot secretaries… Hmm… OK, see you after practice,” he said into his phone. Then turning to Krum, he walked over and whispered into his ear.

“WHAT?!? DELAYED?!? WHY?!?,” the coach screamed. “OK guys, the game has been pushed back to Thursday, because of a typing error. I SEE YOU PAGLEY!!! DON’T YOU THINK ABOUT TWEETING THIS!!!”

“Sorry coach…”

“OK, practice today is cancelled, but be here tomorrow, we still need to be ready for Thursday’s game. Thank you all for coming out here.”

Another Cold and Frosty Morning.

ZYARN, QUINTESSENCE OF DUST - Zarblese team has arrived yesterdy to Zyarn, a cold city in the middle of nowhere in southern Quintessence of Dust, well and ready for their first match... only to be warned that the tournament has been delayed, due to an very badly explained typo mistake made by some secretary or so. But hey, is that really so bad? We don't think so.

If you're a reader of this newspaper, you know how we've been opposing coach Gomen's choice of traveling to Zyarn only in the last minute. His excuse of doesn't wanting to expose our players to the awful weather conditions of the city were nothing but lame and mismanagement. Now the coach has the opportunity to train the team for another week and to get them accostumed to the cold, as none of our players comes from our gelid nation of Zenitis.

"You know what? I won't complain, and neither will my teammates", said defense midfielder Uiliam Ualase, captain and unofficial speaker for the rest of the players. "We'll just train more and get used to it. Alfred didn't fought only in sunny days, and so won't we", he said, referring to emperor Alfred I. Not so eloquently, defender Liz Uindsor confirmed Ualase's mood. "We'll %$*&ing destroy them", she said after this morning's training session.

It's rather good to see our players with such spirit. We're sure they make good use of this when facing Upper North Yorkshire, Undeadzombiee and Mount Shavano, our opponents in the Pear Group.

Hosting Announcement 2: Revenge of the Hosting Announcement

The ceasing to exist of four teams has required a redrawing of the groups. The Cherry Group has been eliminated, and now all games will be played on the Quodite mainland. Teams already having posted rosters are unaffected by the change.

FC MOUNT SHAVANO
Coach : John Landry
Base Formation 3-4-3

Image

ROSTER
STARTERS
Forward, Left Side #10 John Grant
Age 27, Height 6'0, Weight 158
John Grant is an oddity in FRLS, a forward without a lot of shooting power. He has a seemingly magic ability to turn up in the right place
at the right time to get a follow-up shot, and is known for efficient passing. Split time between goalkeeper and forward as late as college,
which seems to give him an ability to predict how opposing keepers will react in most situations. Used to be a strong defender, but that has slipped in recent years. Famous for clutch goals for FC San Angelo in the '08 and '09 playoffs.

Forward, Center #03 Lewis Clark
Age 24, Height 6'3, Weight 188
Lewis Clark is outside the usual mold for a soccer player, has as much size and strength as speed. It would be a mistake, however, to think of him as a slow or unwieldly player. Serious analysts have him ranked with Salina and Flowers as one of the best players in FRLS, and he has carried otherwise mediocre FC Crossroads to the playoffs every year he's been in the league. Has an excellent shooting leg and often gets steals by simply overpowering smaller players. Can play defense as well as offense. In spite of his height, not great with headers.

Forward, Right Side #08 Mike Herron
Age 27, Height 5'11, Weight 161
Mike Herron is a lightning quick, hard shooting forward that gives Mount Shavano a dangerous quick strike ability at any point in the game. Along with the Hobbes brothers, makes FC Navato one of the most talented sides in FRLS. His defense is fairly mediocre, which may lead to time splitting with other players in close games or when trying to protect a lead. The reigning FRLS MVP, and one of its most popular players. Comes from a family of great athletes; has close relatives playing both football and basketball professionally.

Midfielder, Left Side #09 Frank Watson
Age 27, Height 6'1, Weight 153
Often called the "Ultimate Team Player", Watson is a talented player, if not on the same level as the Hobbes brothers or Salina. He is a fan favorite and has been the best player on mediocre FC Fremont for the last five years. Has lead FRLS is adjusted assists the last two years. There was specualtion he would be moved to the right side to work with right forward Mike Herron more closely but this has not materialized.

Midfielder, Left Center #23 Julius Hobbes
Age 23, Height 5'10, Weight 149
With his brother John, Julius Hobbes forms the up-and-coming talent core of FC Navato during the regular year. Very fast, very quick, and
very skilled, if somewhat inexperienced. Still seen in some quarters as having trouble moving out of his brother's shadow. Was nearly invisible in first round playoff losses to San Angelo in '08 and Jenkins City in '09, leading to the media questioning if he can perform under pressure. Coach Landry and others associated with FCMS have insisted that this is not a concern.

Midfielder, Right Center #01 John Hobbes
Age 25, Height 5'11, Weight 158
The senior of the 'Two Brothers' from FC Navato, he displays excellent ball skills, and passing ability. His shooting can be mediocre
at times. Was a defender in college but moved to midfield when drafted, in order to keep the best talent possible on the field on a Navato
team already strong on defense. Has been criticized for fading at the end of seasons, but that shouldn't be a concern in the realtively short
World Cup. Likely the fastest player on the Front Range Republic's roster.

Midfielder, Right Side #11 Raymond Holmes
Age 32, Height 5'11, Weight 152
The oldest player in the starting side for Mount Shavano, Raymond Holmes is a 'thinking man's midfielder'. Known for patience, excellent
positioning and sharp, intelligent passes. Probably not the best player avaliable, he was deliberately chosen by Coach Landry to provide
veteran, on field leadership for the young Front Range Republic side. He plays for FC San Angelo.

Defender, Left Side #14 Jack Rimes
Age 24, Height 5'9, Weight 144
Jack Rimes was derided as 'that skinny kid' when he was drafted by FC Jenkins City, but has played at a high level from the get go in the big leagues. When Isaac Flowers found himself and gelled, Jenkins City found itself with the best defensive side in FRLS and is the defending league champion. Rimes is a lefty, and while not fast and lacking shot power is almost unbelievably quick and skilled. Missed the '08 season with a leg injury.

Defender, Center #33 David Salina - CAPTAIN
Age 29, Height 5'11, Weight 161
G: Fast, Defensive Skills, Smart
David Salina is the biggest name in Front Range soccer. Has won three MVP awards and led FC Harbor Grove to two FRLS Trophies (regular season) and four Cups (playoffs). He has everything you look for in a player, speed, skills, smarts, leadership, and charisma. Has struggled with knee injuries his whole career, but appears to be at fully 100% for the World Cup.

Defender, Right Side #13 Isaac Flowers
Age 25, Height 5'10, Weight 154
S: Aggressive, Defensive Skills
Flowers is the second biggest name in the all-star defensive lineup for the national club. He showed his talent but little polish for the first
couple years after the '06 draft, but has developed into a perrenial MVP candidate manning the right side for FC Jenkins City. An aggressive and skilled defender, he has playing experience at both forward and left defender but lacks the power to shoot effectively and was moved to the right when Jenkins City drafted lefty defender Jack Rimes in '07. Can take away a whole side of the field when his game is on.

Goalkeeper #12 Robert Anderson - CAPTAIN
Age 31, Height 6'0, Weight 174
A veteran goalkeeper who was something of a surprise winning the starting goalkeeper spot for the new national team. The long time captain of FC San Angelo, his early career was marked by inconsistency but he has become a dominant player the last couple of years, in which his team has won the FRLS Cup and Trophy once each. Was not involved in the coaching scandal in the '09 quarter finals. His trademark is aggressive and intelligent play, with which he makes up for his middling physical talent.

RESERVES
F #45 Jim Travis, 30, FC Jenkins City
F #41 Frank Smith, 22, FC Alamosa
M #62 George Jackson, 28, FC Monarch
M #17 Ted Pershing, 33, FC Monarch
M #44 Matt Bradley, 24, FC Crossroads
D #76 George Jones, 27, FC San Isabel
D #05 William Nelson, 29, FC San Angelo
G #02 Patrick Lee, 26, FC Jenkins City

The Constitutional Monarchy of Negative Katana's team has entered the Quintessence of Dust.
The team is comprised of a number of potent necromancers, plotting lich masterminds, vampiric counts, deadly ninja assasins, versitile necroninjas, mindless undead minions, and the like. Most of these vile abominations and murderers have no name listed for one of the following reasons:
A. Such persons wish to have confedentiality as their unholy and illeagal practices may bring unwanted attention
B. The believe that names have power
C. No one bothered to give a shambling corpse a name

Our nation's ambassador has made sure to secure our rights to tamper with reality through negative energy, create shambling undead minions, and kill as we please. We have no comment on the rumours stating that these negotiations involved any assasinations, threats to assasinate, threats to reanimate the children of government officials and afterword set the twisted fiends on the officials' spouse, and or threats of invasion. Please enjoy the games.
Our armies of the unliving and ninja warriors are ruled by a necroninja despot and the parlimentory houses of the House of Ninjutsu and the House of Necromancy.

FCMS Scouting Report, from The Harbor Grove Republic sports page.

MOUNT SHAVANO

While compared to many other nation's sides they are somewhat lacking in talent, our National Team is known for clean, intelligent play. They will play an aggressive, defensive scheme that presses the whole field and loves the offside trap. Many of our readers may be familiar with this defense, as head coach John Landry runs such a scheme when in his regular gig coaching FC Jenkins City, and is recognized as a master of the strategem.

The team's biggest strength is the defense. Landry brings both of his star defensive wings with him from Jenkins City, and they are joined by the great David Salina and backed by the gritty Robert Anderson here. Defensive leaning play from the brothers Hobbes should ensure the team is rarely outnumbered its own end. Expect to see a lot of forward play from Anderson, a lot of offsides calls on opposing forwards, a lot of sideline-to-sideline playmaking from Salina, and very few goals scored against the Front Range Republic.

The team's biggest apparent weakness is the lack of powerful shooters. Only Herron and Clark can be counted on the regularly beat world class keepers one on one. Expect to see lots of attempts to feed those two the ball. Fortunately, Grant, Watson, and Holmes are all world class assist men, and sometimes Herron can score all on his own.

Another thing alert watchers will be able to see is Landry trying to wear out his opponents. The offsides trap scheme results in a short field, and our midfielder heavy roster and up-tempo pacing may wear down teams who aren't as well conditioned as our boys are, with the long FRLS season.

The last wildcard, the weather, appears to have fallen into place with the assignment of Mount Shavano to the Pear Group, to be played in the colder southern reaches of Quintessence of Dust. The Front Range Republic's mountainous climate and generally cooler weather should aid the team against sides from more moderate climes. Robert Anderson has been quoted as saying "We're going up against tropical flatlanders. I hope there's snow on the field".

EXPERT PREDICTIONS - How far will the National Team go in Baptism of Fire 38?
DAN - "Heart goes a lot farther than talent, and I think the team will prove that. We'll get past the qualifiers, and I promise that if we lose it will be to a team with super or un-natural advantages. Official predicition : 5-1 division, tournament champions."
JOHN - "I hate to say it, but we just aren't that good. Remember, this is our first foray into international sports since the Blowout Bowl of 1978. We should just be hoping to win a game. However, I think we will do just that. Official prediction : 1-5 division."
BOB - "Just look at the teams for the Zombiees and Zarbli. The Zombiees are a bunch of talented headcases, and we've seen proven time and again how that never wins against a team that always works together. Zarbli actually has a member of the royal family or their side. Does anyone really think he earned it? We'll win our division, and from there we'll go as far as Anderson and Grant's ability to make clutch plays will take us. Official prediction : 4-2 division, semi-finalists."
BILL - "We really have no statistical information on any of these teams - none of these countries has fielded a national team in a dozen years. We're as good as anyone, but probably no better. Official prediction : 3-3 division."

General Overview:

The Dominion of Inabi's National Football Team is comprised up of twenty-four different players from a variety of clubs in Inabi. This is not the first time that these players have played the sport of football, but this will be one of the first times that they have played on a large international scale. Due to this fact, unless the players play in the same club, they have never actually played together before.

As a consequence of this fact, in the starting games, they will most likely not have a good connection with each other and make quite a few mistakes. To keep things from getting too complicated for these players, Head Coach Jae Kwang-Sun has decided to use the formation 4-4-2. A simple formation, but it works.

Below will be a list of the players selected for this competition. It will state their name, age, club, number, and postion.

"Boss, you sleepin'?"

"Nah. Thinking."

"Here, ah got the lists"

"Good, let me see them."

"Here's Mount Shavano's"

"Hmm... u-huh... u-huh... Seems like a pretty ofensive team. We'll have to prepare our people in the back. But look, there's a weakness right there."

"Where, boss?"

"Looks like they depend too much on this three guys, Grant, Clark and Herron. Let's have Uiliam talking to the defense about them three... and prepare something about them for them to read and watch, will you? If we manage to stop them, we'll have most of the dirty job done. Oh, and let's have Liz taking special care about this Grant fellow."

"Right. An' here's Undeadzombiees"

"Hmm... ok... yeah, so, they seem a balanced team to me, some good players too. About the same guys they took to Toiletdonia. That's good news."

"Yeah? How so?"

"Well, you remember how bad we did there, don't you?"

"'Course Ah do, how couldn' Ah?"

"And so do they. They expect us to do very, very lame. And now we can manage to make them a surprise. OK, now give me Upper North Yorkshire"

"Ah... uh... Ah don' hav' it, boss."

"What?"

"They din' send their list to the BOF yet."

"They didn't send... wow, that is unexpected. We'll have to be extra careful about them now."

"Why's tha'?"

"Because if they didn' send their list yet, we face two possibilities. Either they are extremily poorly organized... or they are very good at keeping secrets. And that's what you may call a stinly situation."

Welcome to UTN Sports' exclusive coverage of the Baptism of Fire 38, coming to you from Quintessence of Dust. We look forward to an interesting and exciting tournament but first we'd like to run through some of the more important players for us.

1. Jason Paul Age: 24 Club: Athletic Stanza
Since making his international debut 5 years ago, 24 year old Jason Paul has just got better and better. His performances in the UFA Mega-League have seen him win Goalkeeper of the Season 3 times. He was rewarded for hvs constant skill and bravery by being made captain for several international friendlies during the summer.

2. Eric Aldé Age: 28 Club: LC Lagoa
Born in Ghana, Eric Aldé moved to Unitopolis when he was eleven and since then he's established himself as one of the finest defenders in the UFA Mega-League, with consistently outstanding performances at centre-back for LC Lagoa. A natural leader, Aldé's no-nonsense style has earned him the respect of his peers.

7. Giuseppe Joliano Age 27 Club: Gratizoli
Whether it's crossing a pinpoint ball onto the head of a striker or beatingg 3 defenders before shooting, Giuseppe Joliano is well capable. One of the fastest players in the league, Joliano combines his fearsome pace with a wide repetoire of tricks and skills, making him a fearsome opponent for any defender.

18. Kenil Hutsa Age: 32 Club: Zamba Torpedos
Kenil Hutsa is captain for both the international side and Zamba Torpedos and anyone who's seen him play will know why. His footballing vision and commitment are second to none, and his long-distance shots are a force to be reckoned with.

9. Corenhinho Age: 23 Club: Athletic Stanza
10 goals in 32 games might not seem that impressive, however when you consider that Corenhinho's been a substitute for half of those games then it becomes a statistic to be proud of. Born in Brazil, 23 year old Corenhinho was top scorer in the Mega-League last season and he'll be looking to continue that form into Baptism of Fire 38.

And finally, the conspicous absence. He hasn't played a minute of international football since being found in bed with the managers wife at a major tournament. He was sent home in disgrace by Jack Beade and later divorced his own wife to marry the former Ms. Beade. His absence will be used as an excuse by Unitopolitans if the team does badly, and proof of Jack Beade's genius if the team does well

16. Dmitri Adalykin Age 31 Club: Dynamo Kruzak
Dynamo Kruzak must rue the day they bought Dmitri Adalykin for £13million in 2007. He had one great season, where he netted 28 goals in 40 games, but soon after that it fell apart, and he hasn't been at his best recently. Dynamo Kruzak were forced to put him on the market for £6million last summer, however they haven't received a single offer, thanks to his infamous antics at a major tournament.

So we hope you enjoy Baptism of Fire 38, and we hope you'll be watching on UTN Sports.

“Wait… not existed? Huh, how can THAT happen…? I mean, it’s not just like they poofed off of NationState. It doesn’t make sense,” exclaimed Johnsom, the coach, as he was talking to his brother.

“Well, according to the news papers, they did. Maybe they got nuked. Well, it doesn’t affect us, because we weren’t in a group with them anyways…”

“Anyway, I was reading through the Sports section of the newspaper and”

“Wait, you can read!!! Oh my gosh, pretty soon you will be able to add and subtract!”

“Hilarious! Anyways, the Zarbli press said we would be underestimating them, so I figure on match days three and six we can do something special to them.”

“Drugging didn’t work well for the track team. It won’t work.”

“You idiot, I’m not gonna drug them, but I am going to put in our prototype.”

“Huh?”

“Our scientists have been working on a pill that an infant takes that allows them to be incredibly smart, intelligent, and competitive.”

“So?”

“Well, we have an 11 year old that has taken that pill, and he is showing up our starters.”

“Why don’t we use him for every match?”

“Because, he has terrible stamina. In fact, we have an earlier, but around the same talent level prototype, because his body has matured, that we may need to use on the quarterfinal matches, because the newer prototype will still be exhausted.”

“Hmm… sounds good, but how will we get him in?”

“We will make a last minute adjustment to our roster, after match day one.”

“Sounds good… I’m glad that I asked about this ‘special’ something.”
