Not necessarily for Radictistani cops.

I've been trying to hash out a story about a currency transfer convoy being ambushed and it's got me wondering just how much armor protection you could realistically have on a fairly normal police car. Given the known/purported protection-to-weight ratios for RL vehicles I can't imagine you could protect against anything other than small arms. Even medium calibers with AP ammunition requires quite a bit of weight to keep out. And I have a hard time believing that even something like this could be made RPG-resistant...

Slap ERA on and problem solved

Or cage/mesh/chain armor - I think that was particularly effective against RPGs.

Something that baffled me for a long time - peel and stick armor:

Armor Systems International uses a combination of multi-layer fabrics and adhesives, formed into flexible or rigid panels, providing protection up to level IV (NIJ 0108.01 standard) with proven multiple hits protection capability from up to .50 cal armor-piercing rounds.

The unique design uses a special adhesive layer which attaches the protection panel securely to almost any smooth surface, providing immediate threat protection. On armored vehicles Aztik 100 can also be used as a spall liner, to provides ballistics and ricochet protection inside the vehicle. Panels can also be applied to protect security checkpoints, guard shacks and other sensitive installations.

Following successful tests by the USMC and the US Army Rapid Equipping Force, 19 piece Aztik 100 armor protection kits were shipped to Afghanistan, to protect Humvees. The 19-piece Aztik 100™ HMMWV (Humvee) armor kit can be installed in the field within two hours by two soldiers. It includes door panels, floor protection, and a rear-protection panel, as well as armored seat cushions and bullet-resistant glass.

A Vancouver, Wash.-based company is supplying Humvee armor kits for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The Army Humvees will be the first military vehicles outfitted with a peel-and-stick armoring system manufactured by Armor Systems International. ASI representatives are now at a U.S. military base, where they will load 15 Aztik 100 armor kits onto a cargo plane bound for troops in Kandahar early next week.

The Army's Rapid Equipping Force ordered the Aztik armor kits in December for use in Iraq but determined a greater need for these resources in Afghanistan.

"We're excited to demonstrate the effectiveness and uniqueness of our armored HMMWV kit solution to American soldiers in Afghanistan," said ASI President and CEO Terry Billedeaux. "This product is long overdue and will protect our troops from deadly" munitions. Over the next couple of weeks, the ASI team will train troops to install the armor, observe its performance in the combat environment and gather feedback from soldiers for future product enhancements.

The panels, made of a composite, can deflect high-caliber arms fire and fragmentation from roadside bombs as well as, or better than, conventional steel-plate armor, according to the company. ASI's armor, however, is much lighter than steel-plate, and addresses a critical concern. The suspension and transmission systems of military vehicles often are unable to withstand the weight of steel armor, ASI officials said in a written statement.

ASI's 19-piece Aztik 100 HMMWV [Humvee] armor kit includes door panels, floor protection, a rear-protection panel, seat cushions and bullet-resistant glass. Two soldiers can install the system in the field in less than two hours, enabling almost instant protection from deadly arms fire.

Interesting stuff. From photos I've seen the stand-off distance of slat armor, at least on Strykers, isn't that great. An armored car so equipped could share the road with other traffic if the lanes aren't too narrow, perhaps.

Well I'm still experimenting, trying to find a way to refine the edges and details without going over the entire thing pixel by pixel. But! basically I use an opensource random island/elevation generator which I used as a base to create a shadow map, then I just colour it in, starting at sea level and working up. Simple really.

Let's post cool ideas for emergency vehicles.

I've got one - RFID.

According to Wikipedia, 3.1–10 GHz (microwave) RFID has up to 200m range, high data speed, requires semi-active or active tags and is/was (?) projected to cost 5$ / tag in volume. On Alibaba, 2.4 GHz active readers cost around $ 300 / piece .

This could serve for a number of purposes:

  • Advanced vehicular access control throughout selected property - such as governmental, etc. facilities
  • Quick identification of fake emergency vehicles
  • Enhanced emergency traffic control - e.g. turning traffic lights red in an intersection when an emergency vehicle is approaching
  • Quick ID of nearby units which may be of help for scene management, in case backup is required, etc.

Gendarmerie vs Police

Which do you use and arguments for and against.

Personally I dislike the idea of a military organization policing the civilian population . However in a situation where SHTF and it gets out of the police's hands I'd sooner have a Gendarmerie than no Gendarmerie, instead of having to resort to the army to handle it.

The only other way around this would be to (further) militarize the police in terms of equipment etc. - But these police units really wouldn't be justified in times of peace - perhaps the best way to go about things would be to have reserve paramilitary units in the police to be activated only when needed (a decision to be taken somewhere high in the civilian chain of command) .

The way it works in Radictistan is between the two. The Royal Security Police and Royal Maritime Police are paramilitary in nature but are part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs rather than the Ministry of Defense except during wartime when both come under the operational control of the MoD. So they work like the USCG basically. Both are very well-armed; the RMP has ships that could hold their own in a real war and the RSP has a lot of heavy weapons including anti-tank munitions.

Kouralia's constabularies are principally unarmed, though AFOs and SFOs are present in every constabulary. It is found that by-and-large they don't need guns to deal with the common day-to-day problems. The Police are expected by law to not fight invading forces, so as to maintain rule of law and some semblance of civilisation in an occupied nation.

Kouralia's Guardia di Finanza are typically armed with pistols and act as a cross between the Border Guard, Financial Police, Coast Guard, BATFE and DEA. They also operate cutters, frigates, helicopters, APCs and other things such as these. They also typically use rifles, shotguns and submachine guns when necessary, while their vehicles such as the aforementioned cutters use 15.5mm HMGs, 7mm GPMGs and even 40mm GMGs. They have a militaristic organisation, and any of their investigations are usually covered by agents of the Office of the Treasury Investigative Service (OTIS) of the ISA (Intelligence and Security Agency) who are seconded to them, usually at a similar ration to detective : uniformed police. The GdF is regarded as a military force and is expected to engage invading elements.

So Kour is basically Italy.

But really. Guardia di Finanza grinds my OCD gears because it translates to "Financial Guard" (?) which only covers one role of all that you posted.

The police not expected to fight occupiers thingy is somewhat strange though.

E: Not to mention it assumes that the occupiers won't simply kill/dissolve/POW' the cops and instate their own.

What Scale do you use, and is there a template for it? I'd be interested in using it as a secondary scale, possibly with the Sen!Scale (like when more archaic texts have a large letter at the start of a page/chapter, surrounded by the smaller and less significant ones).

That would be against the rules in Kouralia. The purpose of the police is not to protect the government in these situations, it is to protect the lives and property of the civilians. If they can best do this by trying to keep everything as day-to-day and normal while the armoured units are coming in, then they'll do that.

This is not to say that the Police can't turn in their badges and join up/become rebels, or that no-one will accidently leave the weapons safe in the ARV open while they go to get a bacon butty a few days before the panzers roll on through the village.

This is highly frustrating. In terms of doctrine, etc. I'd much rather have highly decentralized policing (e.g. US) but in practice that makes it so frustrating to organize and shit because you've got so many little different chains of command and what not.
