Aerocraft Retrofitting/Upgrading
[7] Seven Bulgarian Fighters have been updated with the following systems.
The new undercarriage configuration also allows for the addition of two heavy stores pylons to the fuselage. Additionally the under-wing pylons can hold missile launching rails that are compatible with the R550 Magic Air-to-air missiles and variants thereof.
Updated the seven fighters bodywork and so forth with the following changes that now enable Air-to-Air capability. This is provided through the carriage of AIM-9 and similar passive homing/IR AAMs. The Bulgarian fighers are now capable of LANTIRN, LITENING and ECM pod carriage and employs a MIL-STD-1760 Weapon Interface Data Bus. Weapons release is conducted through a control column gun trigger switch and weapon release button for air-to-air/air-to-ground.
Avionics Features:
* airborne multimode radar system;
* optronic (IR search and track) system;
* helmet-mounted target designation system;
* fire control and target designation equipment for passive radar seeker missiles.
The newly upgraded Bulgarian Fighters now come standard with integrated optical and laser systems, and it poses a significant challenge even to the most advanced enemy aircraft. This system is unique in the amount of tasks it can perform when compared to older systems. It can provide targeting solutions for ground and air targets at up to 15 km. It can detect missiles thanks only to the warmth generated by air resistance on their nose and can provide the pilot with a detailed trajectory and it can do all these tasks across the full 360 degrees of the battlefield compared to its predecessors that usually only provided a certain amount of coverage in front of the pilot.
The radar suite is of the CVCI ICU-7A, an advanced variant of the original VCI ICU-6B radar introducing advanced air to surface functions like mapping and terrain following. The new radar which is built by VCI (Verlaine Corporate Industries) only weighs an extra 1 kg (56 kg total), but the sector of scan has been increased to ±20 degrees from the original ±10 degrees of the previous system. The newer radar also has improved ECM and look-down and shoot-down capability, and can track 4 targets simultaneously while engaging one of four target tracked.
The radar forms only a part of the total system. The radar features improved signal processing and has a detection range of up to 120 km vs a 5 m2 RCS target for the export variant, and up to 10 targets tracked and up to 4 attacked at once in air to air mode. The tracking range is 0.83 - 0.85 of the detection range. In air to surface mode the radar can detect a tank from up to 25 km away and a bridge from 120 km away, a naval destroyer could be detected up to 300 km away and up to two surface targets can be tracked at once. The radar has a weight of 220 kg and a scanning area of +/- 85 degrees in azimuth and +56/-40 in elevation. The antenna is an electronically scanned slotted planar array and has a diameter of 624 mm.
Avionics are integrated about a MIL-STD-1553B Interface/Data Bus with Data Bus wiring used throughout the system architecture to reduce wiring bundles. This arrangement is a comprehensive navigation/communications suite emphasizing mission completion, reliability, flexibility and ease of serviceability. Principal avionics and sensors are contained in two to three bays including the nose radome/sensor bay, forward fuselage avionics bay and aft cockpit avionics bay as available.
Air to Air Modes:
* VS (Velocity Search)
* RWS (Recon./Search while Scan)
* TWS (Track While Scan)
* STT (Single Target Tracking)
* Air Combat Mode (ACM)
* AMTI (aerial moving target indication)
Air To Ground Modes:
* DBS (Doppler Beam Sharpening)
* EXP/FRZ (Mapping Expansion/Freezing)
* RBM (Real Beam Mapping)
* SSTI (Sea Single Target Tracking)
* GMTI (Ground Moving Target Indication)
* AGR (Air-to-Ground Ranging)
Total Cost After Sales Discount (5%): $33.25 Million HCr ($79.13 Million Bulgarian )
Currency Evaluation: $1 HCr = $2.38 Bulgarian
