In that case you just need to go far enough back and release it. And if you're going to upset history some knowledge of anti-bacterial and anti-viral medicines and practices probably wouldn't go amiss either.

Release it at the same time as the Black Death hit Europe populations should be relatively even by the time those Europeans arrive.

That's the pattern of that history, colonist conquering greatly facilitated by smallpox and all the problems caused by it, if it wasn't for smallpox Pizarro would've faced a healthy, stable, undivided empire, Cortes probably wouldn't have been able to get Tenochtitlan when he was kicked out, the countless other non-urban nations would've had much more of a fighting chance.

Thinking about it a bit, why start so late? You could easily go back to when humans first arrived in the America's, teach them how to have a strong government, and bring accurate maps of resource deposits. If you REALLY want to ruin history that is.

While I'm there I might as well give the Incas an alphabet and a very useful but simple machine, the printing press. Just to mess with future historians, I would teach them Katakana :twisted:

Since I have a time machine and simple special effects to overawe the natives, I might as well tell the Incas to launch a holy war of conquest northwards so that they control the isthmus of Panama, giving them an advantageous position for modern times. They will eventually encounter and conquer the Aztecs (replacing human sacrifice with a religion of mercy thanks to llamas) and the Mayans, hopefully before the Spanish arrive. Maybe such an entity could survive the conquistadors.

To have some more lolz, I could tell them about theoretical concepts like a cartesian coordinate plane, set theory, algebra and basic calculus... in other words, things to mess with historians.

This would change the future so much that nobody would need to go back to kill Hitler since WWII as we know it would probably not even exist. It would also spread my genes far and wide over at least two continents.

To the OP, the plan is taking care of the sick, by supposedly introducing his/her/their disease-resistant genes into the American (North and South) gene pool, thereby lessening their susceptibility to European diseases when the Europeans start colonizing the New World. Except, IIRC, disease immunity does not work that way.

It was genetic resistance. Exposure over generations produced selective pressures that made eastern hemisphere populations genetically resistant over a long time.

While you are correct that selection pressure produced genetic resistance in Europeans, we have lost many of those resistances today because we've eradicated the diseases that produced them. The Inca had none of those diseases and so would have no selection pressure making it advantageous to retain genetic resistance.
