General election in Esperantujo 2

Postby Esperantujo 2 » Fri Jan 31, 2014 12:33 pm

The next general election in Esperantujo 2 will take place on 4th February. This time there will be 436 seats, an increase of 60. As always, half will be female and half male. Half will be elected by first past the post in the 109 constituencies. The remainder will be elected as additional members. The method we use, for each gender, to add the votes of the unsuccessful candidates for each party to the majorities of that party's successful candidates, then to assign the number of seats proportionately. Independents are treated as a party for this purpose.
Because of the radical changes in constituencies, the election is hard to predict. However, it is likely that the current 5-party Green-Red coalition will continue. Half the cabinet's constituencies have been abolished. President Najbaro will stand in Rosetio North-West. Young Sinjorino Klara Amiko will stand in Azentruo West. Doktorino Bela Intentano and Sinjoro Ludoviko Fishisto will both be standing in Polgaro.

With the first results of the Esperantujo general election in, there have been surprises. Diskordia is in the lead with 4 seats, winning 3 seats in Azentruo, including both seats in Azentruo East, and one seat from Rugha in Amorejo. Second is Verda, the Radical Green Party, with three seats, winning both seats in Azentruo West, which means that both cabinet minister Klara Amiko and Movement for 6th International leader Aleksandra Kuiristo lost. However, M6I was only 306 votes behind Verda for the male seat. Rugha, the Authentic Greens and the Residual Greens have one seat each. If the present trend continues it will be difficult to form a government, but there are 426 results to come.

Whilst I approve of your voting methods and fairness in elections Ido have one point I'd like to make. You state an exact 50/50 gender split to stop discrimination against either gender but surely it would be less discriminatory to pick candidates based on merit rather than through a gender quota, it should not come into the matter. Then you will be selecting on individuality which is far fairer than a quota. You would also probably end with a better quality of legislature.

However I do find your election fascinating and will follow it.

Strictly speaking, the gender split is 50% non-male and 50% non-female, people of other genders having the right to stand in either section. Also some vote for only one candidate. Conservatives only participate in the male section. There is still a lot of counting to come, results being declared in alphabetical order and the latest to declare is Meza Island. Possibly the Conservative Party or Diskordia could propose an amendment to the constitution along the lines you suggest, but it is most unlikely to be passed.

Ah that is fair enough, was just wondering, your fairness in elections is commendable though.
