Unlucky for Banks this time round - or just for everyone else?

And for those who don't know what I'm talking about...

So there you go. Now you know why no-one else likes them.

Especially not New Toronto fans, who did at least manage to score one goal to Banks' ten in their opening match. In fact Banks won their first twelve matches, scoring a total of 58 goals in the process. Another ten-goal game - this time a 10-3 win at Hyland Town - helped the Banks goal count. No doubt some at the bottom end of the table would love to score 58 goals all season, but that's another story.

In fact, it took 16 games for Banks to be defeated, 2-1 at Ashton Rovers. The league by this time became a race for second place, with Hyland Town, Mort Park, Bradley Hornets, Redwood Forest and Moorcroft Wanderers (the last two newly-promoted) in contention.

Interestingly, New Toronto avenged their 10-1 defeat with a 4-2 win over the perennial champions, but Banks were still eleven points clear of Mort Park in second. The top two then broke away, and Banks won by twenty points, Mort Park taking second by a further ten.

At the other end, founder members St. Andrew's came so close to relegation, but a good run at the end of season pulled them out of the mire, leaving city rivals East Snaith and Ashton Rovers. one of only three teams all season to beat Banks, to their Second Division fate.

Hopefully the Second Division would be a little bit closer. Well, it couldn't be any less so, could it?

In contrast to Banks' 15-match unbeaten start, it took just seven games for the last unbeaten record, that of Moorcroft City, to fall with a 3-2 defeat at AFC Stanton. By half-way, no single team dominated, with Moorcroft City and Crompton Town tied in first place, only twelve points ahead of last-placed Stanley Athletic. (Take note, First Division.)

In the end, it was AFC Stanton who pulled ahead at the crucial moment, with Crompton Town returning to the First Division with them. Moorcroft City's famous habit of self-destruction took them from top to fifteenth in just half a season.

Corcaigh 2-1 Actarius Athletic

First Division

Finally, after five season, finally, the mighty Corcaigh have been toppled. Although welcome, the fall of the four times in a row champions is a bit of a surprise. Not because Corcaigh themselves had been getting stronger, it seemed their challengers were getting weaker. Many if not all pundits predicted a fifth straight title for Corcaigh, and few considered any team of having much of a chance to challenge them. To say Snowspire came from near obscurity to win the league would be true, to say they got lucky wouldn't. They, along with Castrograd, displayed championship winning form all season and were good enough to push the previously unbeatable Corcaigh down to third place, and “only” into the Preliminary rounds of the TakilQuip Champions Cup. It's also incidentally the first time in the four tier era of the Sorthern Football League that Corcaigh have failed to win the top division.

The top of the table wasn't alone in witnessing the fall of champions though, as former champions Beningrad and Septentrionien de Finistère become probably the biggest teams to ever be relegated from the Sorthern First Division. The fall of Septentrionien de Finistère perhaps isn't so surprising as they've struggled for a number of years now. Beningrad's relegation though will come as a huge shock to the club, and to make matters worse it means their big rivals, Oblast Rangers, are for the time being quite definitely the capital's number one club. Both clubs will be hoping for nothing less than the Second Division championship next season, it's quite possible neither will even be in the top three.

Second Division

A largely unremarkable season in the second tier, in which much of the excitement was offered by the three teams relegated from Division One last season making a right hash of returning to the top flight. Both Swinedon Town and Locomotiv Shingon lost more games than they won, both finishing mid table with a rather uninspiring points total of 49 points. Indeed the only relegated team who claimed any success were Rode Ster Amsterdam, and that came in the Cup. Of the promoted teams Dún Choin went straight back down, Bimlico survived and Revolutionaire did rather well, and could possibly have missed out on the Series B Champions Cup by a single point.

Third Division

Boing! Boing! That's the sound of the yo-yo that Reading Town have become (although thinking about it do yo-yo's really make a boing sound?). Having won the Third Division twice previously (in 2033 & 2035, see keeping the wiki article updated does help) and having been relegated last season they found themselves switching divisions quickly once more by winning their third league title, once again, in large part due to the goals of former Sorthern international Lewis Graham. Will they go up and stay up this time though? Probably not. Also going up this season is St. Patrick's, the side famous for selling all their good players to Port of Clotaire, in Candelaria And Marquez. Could more departures to the C&M be imminent on the back of their promotion? Quite possibly not with the success that system has bought PoC in recent seasons.

Fourth Division

Proving that the gap between third and fourth is ever closing the top two teams in the bottom division this year were relegated from the Third Division last year. So, it's not really closing all that slowly (two of last seasons promoted teams from Division Four were also relegated from Division Three this year). But it's getting there, and Carmala Sports, who were best of the rest and finished in third are sure to bring a new style of whipping boys to the Third Division next season.

Asinusford played like real donkeys for much of the season, and so it's no surprise that they finished bottom. Their reward was a play-off for survival in the Sorthern Football League against Cup quarter-finalists Curdley Vale, who got that far due to a favourable draw more than anything else. Nonetheless, Vale can take heart from this play-off, the closet one yet and they were really quite unlucky to lose both games by a single goal.

Dreyher Island League

And as the stranglehold on the First Division ends, so it does in Dreyher. Like Corcaigh, Oast Orient were looking for their fifth straight title and prior to the start of the season they looked good to get it. After seven games the league was finely balanced with both teams on ten points. From game eight though, Huntscove took a hold of the league and from game nine onwards their lowest lead over Orient was six points. Neither side found any success in the Sorthern Cup, Oast losing in the first round 3-2 away to Leahton, and Huntscove losing 3-1 in the same round at home to Swinedon Town.

Sorthern Cup

Rode Ster Amsterdam become only the second side to win a second Sorthern Cup, and thus the joint most successful side in the Cup. Their triumph won't go down as one of the more difficult when the history books are written though. They played just one First Division side during their cup run (James Connolly SC in the semi-final), indeed it could be argued that Floriana deserved to win the final more based on the fact that they had to beat two First Division sides in 17th of October and Beningrad on their route to the final.

Carnegie Tech's 2042 season hadn't been its best. At 5-8-1, they were good enough to capture second in the conference, and the margin of victory in their five wins was almost three goals. But if they had that kind of strength... why couldn't they turn more of those draws into wins? In other years, that might have been enough to creep into the tournament as an at-large, but there would be no breaks for a champion this time. Carnegie were out, and so too were any chances of defending their IUCC XIV crown, right?

Wrong. When the IUCC committee looked at the Dancougaran entrants, Friedmann College were thrown out and replaced by Tech, who were to have qualified as defending champions. Once they got to the tournament, they rediscovered their winning ways in the group stage, taking seven points from three matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Their compatriots at Amada were even stronger, winning all three. It was to be expected, said the analysts, from playing in the Big East, where the overall quality of play can be murderous even in down years. National champion Pine Bluffs, though, was badly exposed by this level of competition, as they failed to win a game.

In the knockout stages, Carnegie Tech were the first to fall, although Amada would go through to the final where they went up against Valanora's Hondo College. There would be no denying the quality of elven football on this day, as Hondo cruised to a 3-0 victory.

With entry deadlines for IUCC XVI coming before the 2044/45 season and tournament could be completed - fluid time is fun like that - the teams selected were based on their 2042/43 results. That meant that the next season would see teams play for a spot in the future seventeenth edition.

2043/44: Competition: Lunarossa set a new standard by putting four teams in the final Top 25 poll, the most of any conference, although critics immediately pointed out that it wasn't that impressive in a conference of fifteen teams as, say, the Big West's three out of nine the previous year. It was the usual suspect, University of Lunarossa, at the top, although joining them in the top five were some unfamiliar faces. The University of Juusenkitai were shock winners of the Big East; here was a team that had only won four games each of the last two seasons and bottomed out at 1-2-11 less than ten years ago. And they didn't just win the Big East, they obliterated it, finishing eleven pooints ahead of second-place Daikon Academy. Their achievement overshadowed the strong year by Barclay State, which had its first nine-win season in over twenty years.

Despite that, the Big East managed to get Daikon and third-place Jefferson into the tournament, where they had mixed results. Jefferson would go through after crushing Hinamizawa 5-1, but they would fall in the Conference Round. So, too, would Juusenkitai. Here, nobody was sure if it was the curse of the No. 1 ranking or just the fact that Juusenkitai, which had drastically overachieved during the regular season, were simply not up to the task against a solid perennial, Pollock. Lunarossa's four tournament teams were immediately reduced to two when Neville Island and Craig State crashed out in the first round. The most entertaining tie? That would have to be Angel Grove and Hazuki State. Nobody was sure what to expect of Angel Grove, but they were good enough for force Hazuki State to score five in the home leg to scrape through.

In the Conference Round, it was Juusenkitai bowing out as said before, and Barclay State were also exposed. They had the unfortunate luck to draw Lunarossa, setting up No. 3 and No. 4 in what was billed as the best fixture of the round. Not even close. Lunarossa win the road leg 4-0 and cruised at home 5-2 to produce a contender for the most lopsided result of the entire tournament - Shapiro State would have the last word on that. Onward, then, to the Sweet Sixteen, where Friedmann slapped around Pollock, apparently fuming about their IUCC omission and determined to prove a point by winning big in the tournament. There was another high-seed draw that pitted No. 2 Shapiro State and No. 3 Lunarossa, and this time it was much closer. A 3-1 home win for Shapiro State, though, was the difference.

Shapiro State established themselves as the favorites in the quarterfinals by romping over Donneley 8-0 on aggregate. Thane College also looked good, putting six past Shiba over two legs to win 6-1. But analysts were quick to point out that they hadn't played the strongest opposition remaining in the round, but that was the random draw for you. Fridmann kept going, though, 3-2 over Okinomiya. The other quarterfinal saw Branstein look the most impressive of the bunch, taking down Keats Island comfortably 5-2. They should have been the favorites, although Thane would beat them on penalties in the semifinals.

Friedmann were also into the semifinal and took on Shapiro State, and while they were undoubtedly playing to prove themselves, the only thing visible was the gap in talent between them and the opposition. Friedmann hosted the first leg and went down early, eventually losing 2-0. Shapiro State then won at home to set up a final with Thane, and they were expected to win their second tournament title. Thane, located in the northeast corner of Lunarossa but in the Shiba Valley league, had never made a final and were hoping to avoid getting blown out. They were pleasantly surprised when Shapiro State came out flat and they ran up a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 victory, giving Thane College its first college title.

Short stay for collegians at SBCC: There were more victories this time around, and Dancougar did put a second team into the group stage. But once again, nobody was able to advance beyond it. Nevertheless, the quality of some of the early round victories was excellent, so that while Dancougar's college teams are always in over their heads by entering the SBCC, it's comforting to know that the depth of talent in Dancougar has remained fairly high, all things considered.

Rizzi College were happy to learn that the SBCC did not overflow as Amada had predicted when they jumped to the IUCC instead. Of course, placed in the first preliminary round, they and Barynsk had the longest possible road ahead of them. Things started brightly enough, with Barynsk squeezing past Aterro FC while Rizzi obliterated Starblaydia's Tribe Urjali 8-2 on aggregate. The reborn Starblaydia football system still has a ways to go, it seems, to recapture its former luster. But were Rizzi for real? In the next round, they blasted Pasarga's Paulinthal FC 5-1. Analysts were quick to point out that against most established leagues, Rizzi would be in trouble. Witness Barysnk's second-round defeat to Taeshan's Loachen Yellow Jackets.

Rizzi finally lost their pace in the third round and were dumped by Deportivo Peralta 5-1. Shiratori, though, made a splash in their opener, downing Daehanjeiguk's Sanseo by a combined 4-1. That put them into the group stage, where they joined champions Pine Bluffs. Now, Pine Bluffs had crashed out of the IUCC rather spectacularly... could they regain some face here? The answer was an emphatic no, as they managed a single point from six matches. Shiratori did much better, two losses at home killed their chances. They finished with seven points, one behind Melin & Nader, and were out.

2044/45: Classification: Barclay State were quickly back to medriocrity following their escapades the previous year, although the University of Juusenkitai were only two points out of third in the Big East and could very well have made the tournament if it weren't for their six losses. The committee has long been loath to grant an at-large bid to teams with that many, so it was when Alameda Academy, 7-5-4 and third in the Keats Island CPL, were granted a berth whereas the team above them in the standings, 9-1-6 Mountain View, were not. Helmut and the Kishin Delta had very strong years, as six of their combined fifteen schools made the Top 25. Would it translate to tournament success? By comparison, Lunarossa saw only one team make the tournament and none finish in the media poll. It was the result of an incredibly competitive season which saw only seven points separate 2nd place from 14th.

So Mountain View were of course upset by the lack of a tournament berth, while Billick and Wightman also felt like they deserved a closer look. Again they bemoaned the apparent favoritism given to former champions like Carnegie Tech, who made the field despite an average 6-5-3 record. Wean State's berth out of the Metro East was also questioned. Yes, they only had two losses, but they came in the Metro East. But the field is the field, and the only optioned left to the snubs was to watch and hope for the "undeserveds" to get beaten in the first round.

Carnegie Tech duly bowed out, but Wean State did well to win 3-2 on the road in order to top Shiba State. If anything, it was looking like the Kishin Plains and Helmut CPL had been overrated. Schwartzer? Blanked by Friedmann. Branstein? Crushed by Amada. There were tears all over the twin cities of the east when both Port Royal and Eastport were beaten, so of those much-lauded "six out of fifteen", all of the at-large entries were bounced in the first round. Ouch.

And then the champions of the Kishin Delta and Helmut CPL were finished off, too. Monagham State, a former world champion which had pounded the Shikibu CPL into submission, won both legs by 1-0 scores. Fujiwara State came closer to advancing but were ultimately beaten on penalties by Frickstowne. There was no shortage of entertaining football elsewhere, where the random draw produced No. 1 vs No. 7 (where, once again, the number one seed was out early), No. 8 vs No. 9 (Kinnikun rolled over Desugaia), and No. 3 vs No. 5 (Porter's 3-2 home win being all the difference). Wean State seemed to have taken all the pre-tournament criticism to heart and continued to be the most entertaining team of the tournament, beating Mifflin 6-5 after surviving a scare on the road leg.

Monagham State bowed out, but Wean State were running rampant, scoring three goals in both legs against Foster. And with the draw conspiring to eliminate some of the better teams, there was real talk of them going the distance. Of course, some teams just played dreadful football, like Porter against Irie City. Chastain and Kotetsu Tech produced the most entertaining tie of the round, with both road teams winning their matches. Wean State were finally undone by Southport, but at least they went down fighting, to the tune of 5-3. Southport's 3-1 home win was the difference, and although they weren't able to deliver a win for their own fans, Wean State were applauded off the pitch at the end. Chastain were now looking like the favorites after hammering Redwood City by scores of 4-1 and 3-1. But a familiar name was also present in the bracket... Hazuki State. Although they weren't the offensive juggernaut they were in previous seasons, they were playing solid football and were getting goals at crucial junctures rather than folding.

As soon as Chastain were pegged as favorites, the floor fell out from underneath them, and Southport rolled with a pair of three-goal performances to advance to the final. It would be their second appearance; the first was a 1-0 victory over Kishin Academy nine years previous. Their opponents were Hazuki State, who once again played smart football. A 2-0 home victory overcame a first-leg deficit and they were into their third final. They'd lost the previous two; would this be the same?

Nobody could ever fathom why Hazuki State had never won a title. Statistically, they were one of Dancougar's elite programs. A third of their seasons had resulted in at least ten regular season wins. They had produced some of the most feared striking talent in the country. And for all that, they had never won the big one. They would always choke in the tournament, no matter how far they got. The monkey was gone. Southport City could not hold a 2-0 lead and Hazuki State used a three-goal second half to earn their first long-awaited tournament crown.

Dancougar announces international qualification: The Kingdom of Dancougar nominates four college teams for the SBCC and three for the IUCC. Do to a timewarp, teams for the upcoming IUCC XVI have already been chosen, so these are the tentative entrants for IUCC XVII.

The College Alliance was left to fill in the IUCC field, and they went with Baptista and Wean State for their admirable runs through the tournament.

And another SuperLiga winds down with the championship wrapped up long before the final day. But what’s this? That’s not Ciudad sitting pretty at the top.

José Felipe Cassumba Domingos’ playing career might not quite have lived up to his early billing as Canderlaria And Marquez’s first truly world class player but as a coach he’s carving out a nice little career for himself at the helm of Sporting San Marquez after leading the Larissan club to their first title in six years, ending three years of Ciudad domination in the process. Add that to him leading Sporting into the first two global cup campaigns in their history as while as masterminding a Copa Sargossa win in his first season and JCD can certainly allow himself to feel just a little smug. A rock solid defence that conceded just 26 goals in 38 games was the foundation on which the side was built. Keeper Aaron Turner is surely pushing for international recognition with C&M while Sargossan international centreback Néstor González’s form earned him a move to el Din Marbles in the CMSC.

Of the other contenders El Nacional had to content themselves with yet another runner-up spot in what was Rob Kietecs’ last season in charge. He’s stepping down to concentrate on his work with the national side. The veteran Nethertopian has narrowly missed out on the title in each of his three seasons at the helm but his reign will be remembered fondly by the Goza faithful. He did manage to sign off with some silverware after his side overcame Porto Alegro Azul on penalties in the Copa Sargossa final.

Perennial champions Ciudad Soluca started the season poorly with a shock defeat against Dunas Del Sol in the Super Cup and it never really picked up after that. They may have won their last four games but Félix Barreto’s side still finished a massive 17 points off the pace. And a 6 – 0 hammering by arch-rivals El Nacional in the Copa Sargossa quarter final just rubbed salt into the wounds. A mixture of global cup commitments and international call-ups, a new found bugbear of SuperLiga managers, was blamed for the poor showing.

A final day home win over Rubio Bayamo meant Dínamo Maturín held onto fourth spot to qualify for the Globe Cup. Deportivo Cordova and Estrella Torreón narrowly missed out after falling away in the closing stages. Porto Alegro Azul, after losing out with practically the final kick of last season, will grace the Globe Cup next season thanks to their runner’s up finish in the Copa.

At the other end of the table Jaguarés never recovered from the loss of Marcos García Fernández to Sporting Kildare of Dancougar and quietly dropped down into the Segunda Liga. Cartago Rojo were also dead and buried long before the final round of matches. And failure to win any of their last six games condemned Moruga S.C. to the drop alongside them. They will be replaced by Santos, Machala Del Norte and Atlético Ensenada.

The Global Cups
There was disappointment for the Archipelago in the TakilQuip Champions Cup as both Ciudad Soluca and El Nacional exited in just the Second Preliminary Round. After a 2 – 2 draw in Pasarga against Galactica Ciudad looked well placed to advance against their fellow Rushmoris but a 1 – 0 defeat in Soluca put paid to that. Even worse was suffered by El Nacional who beat Logrian side Broome City 3 – 0 in Goza only to lose by the same scoreline in the away leg. A single extra time goal sent Rob Kietecs’ side out 4 – 3 on aggregate.

There was early delight in the Globe Cup Selective Stage as Dunas Del Sol overcame Quodites Highmark City Blues 2 – 1 on aggregate. But they fell by the same score in the next stage to the Houghton Kestrels of West Zirconia. The Prelimenary Stage was as far as Dínamo Maturín went too, turned over 2 – 0 by Newmanistani side Centralia. There was better news for El Nacional who beat Qutaris Lockstow United to go into the qualifying stage. Ciudad’s miserable campaign ended in Soluca on penalties against Arcrés Millos of Aguazul.

So we’re only at the qualifying stage of the Globe Cup and only two SuperLiga sides have made it through. And both faced tough opposition from Liventia. Folenisa did for Sporting San Marquez 4 – 3 on aggregate but El Nacional, thanks to a fantastic 4 – 1 away win, overcame Orean United to qualify for the group stages for the second season running. They would end up third in Group C behind Cafundéu giants Ranco Toco and Bayern Phoenix of Taeshan.

Not the most inspiring of seasons for the SuperLiga's representatives but it did help the league up two places to 28th in the global rankings.

Season Capsules: 2043/44 Apertura, 2044/45 Clausura

Yuki City Athletic's run into the semifinals in the 2041/42 Globe Cup wasn't the only success story for the D-League. The league was once again responsible for furnishing an experimental team for a non-WCC tournament, as the Oxen Cup returned after a short break. As with the Empire Charity Cup before it, the Oxen Cup team was constructed by taking one young player from each of the league's 20 teams. This meant it wasn't the strongest all-star team on offer, but it was still good enough to take the title. The new Qazian Memorial Stadium was opened with aplomb and Dancougar won the title to put another feather in the league's cap.

Keystone Cup

Dancougar hosted the second preseason Keystone Cup tournament between it and the Newmanistan Premier League. The selection criteria seemed bent towards D-League teams which had been down during the 2042/43 Clausura, with Eastport, Stoneridge, and Kalinsk each getting picked, while a power was selected in Yuki City Athletic. There seemed to be some foresight involved, as each of the "down" teams would rise up by the following Clausura.

It was a close call in Yuki City and Stoneridge, where both D-League teams advanced on penalty kicks after scoreless draws. Eastport and Dynamo were tackled in normal time as Artur Komarov's slide continued. Since winning World Cup 46 with the Wings, the Dynamo 'keeper hasn't been himself.

Hardware is hardware, and if Yuki City Athletic never win the league again, at least they'll have this.

2043/44: Apertura

While the D-League will never claim to run the world's largest transfer market, the amount of talent available after the Di Bradini and Oxen Cups proved tempting to clubs who were no longer constrained by the salary cap. It was the busiest summer on record, with thirteen players brought in from overseas and three shipped out. Sargossa, which had a surprisingly deep run at the Di Bradini Cup, were raided for five players, while four Candelarians were brought in, the first time that any clubs were brash enough to reach into the CMSC.

Dwayne Landro was gone after a long career with Shuukyuu Kishin and King's Eleven, but King's Eleven were more worried about shoring up their defense than replacing their midfield star. Only Teknika had ceded more goals the previous year, so they grabbed a pair of defenders, Sargossa's Jorge Alberto Carmona and Queer Poco's Rudolpho. Sporting Kildare were out to show that their title in 2041/42 hadn't been a fluke, and they brought in a pair of Sargossans, Carlos Candela and Marcos Garcia Fernandez, to provide more balance.

It's hard to get a feeling for how the season will turn out until two or three months have passed, but as it turned out, the top of the table after week six was remarkably telling. Kildare were indeed going to hang in there and challenge for another title. They still hadn't found a quality forward to pair up with Martin Lancaster, but Don Kline was productive as ever at 31, and the addition of Sargossan Fernandez was providing them with that extra spark. And no one was about to discount the team right behind them, Shuuukyuu Kishin, who had found the answer to Karen Stadler's retirement with the arrival of Yoshiaki Soma, who scored five goals in the team's first six matches. He'd hardly gotten his feet wet, but his combination with Matthew Turner was already looking scary.

But who would challenge their hegemony? Entering October, Eastport and Chuuoushi had fought their way into the picture, while Port Royal were not far behind. Seeing Chuuoushi near the top put a smile on the faces of their fans, for the team was not its usual high-flying self. Josef Rousch was all that was left of their original midfield trifecta, although Aiko Yoshida was coming along and defenders Rokuro Katayama and Justinas Volrat were helping the team play more responsibly. The results were a 6-2-3 record and fourth in the table. Five straight losses would end the good feelings eminating from Hazuki, and fans remembered that, if nothing else, there was college football if things got any worse.

At the halfway point, Kishin and Kildare were still slugging it out at the top of the table with the league's number two and number one offense, respectively. "Soma to Turner!" was the call in the capital, while out in relative boonies of Kirk County, Kildare fans reveled in the balanced attack that even saw defenders like Zachary Ledain find the net with some regularity. Then again, perhaps it was the forward-thinking of the Kildare defense that had them giving up the second-most goals in the league; only last-place Super Dimension had them beat. If Kildare could come up with more responsible defense, they'd be downright unstoppable. They did improve a bit during a five game unbeaten streak which saw them jump into first.

Heading into March, Kildare were still leading, and Kishin were six points behind in third. In between them was Grandborough, who were starting to get more production from midfielder James Idiotsman, who was transitioned into a starter as the season progressed. New transfer Gala struck up a partnership with Donny Saulsbery although they were winning thanks to their defense, a veteran unit led by Naoto Ogura. They continued to hang around, while Stoneridge were also pushing hard for second. Kildare were starting to build a cushion, but they were surviving the retirement of Alexei Voronzoff thanks to Dos Santos and the development of striker Michael Chrysler, who had eleven goals to his credit.

With six games left, Kildare led Kishin by five points, and from there, five points separated second-place Kishin from sixth-place Yuki City Athletic. The lead was ten points by the end of April. Kildare cruised over Athletic 3-0 away while Kishin fell 3-2 to bottom-third Raymaley. Grandborough were holding their position tied with Kishin at 60 points by defeating Lakeport 2-1. By now, coach Jeremy McAllister must have believed in the seventh-place curse. No team had managed to finish seventh as frequently as Lakeport, and not even a foreign goalkeeper in Kiendar seemed to be the missing piece they needed.

That 3-0 victory sealed the title for Kildare, as that ten-point lead was where they stood with only three games remaining. They lifted the trophy at home the next week before a 1-1 draw with Port Vigilence, and from there, the battle was on for second. Kishin would claim that honor by winning their final three matches, while Grandborough would hold on for third.

Times were tough in Eastport, where the former champions had fallen into the middle third after a draw-laden season saw them leave too many points on the table. The team had the league's third-best offense, so that wasn't the problem... it a leaky defense gave up too many late goals despite adding youth in Ladis Berk to inherit the back line still led by Doug Edrington.

International Roundup

Yet another disappointing drop out of the TakilQuip Champions' Cup, as all D-League entries completely... wait, hold everything. A team escaped from the group stage? For the first time since 2031? Believe it!

Leave it to Yuki City Athletic to pull off something like this, as the team can't seem to win a league title but has proudly gone deeper than any D-League team in any international tournament. And this time, it was the TQCC Round of 16. That's nothing to write home about in the big leagues, but then again, Dancougar doesn't quite have one of those, now does it? Athletic were victorious in Group G with eleven points and a commanding +9 goal difference. Sure, they lost to Green Island in the next round, but just getting there was a marked improvement over the previous years, so kudos to them.

As for Kildare and Kishin? Well... better luck next time. Kildare crashed out in the third round to CF Mont-Pluie. Kishin fared better, topping the Neurologists 3-0 in their first tie. They went up against West Zirconia's Etruria in the fourth round with the group stage just two legs away. And they collapsed. A 2-0 loss at home brought out the boo-birds, and a 2-0 loss away sent them down to the Globe Cup.

In the Globe Cup, Lakeport fought Football Nordiqueville to a 2-2 aggregate draw and lost on penalties, so an early exit for them. Port Royal did far better, winning their way into the qualifying stage where Ad'ihan's Grand Arsenal finally proved too strong. But FC Koltecia, Ashdom City, and Wiechester United were all left in their wake, leading some fans to wonder if they might have done better if they hadn't started way back in the selective stage.

Three teams in the group stage, then, and Shuukyuu Kishin, for all their might, could not compete in their group. They were the only team to finish with a negative goal difference and finished with a measly four points. Eastport United were also beaten, although they fared better in their group, finishing third behind Mar Sara and Mont-Pluie. But Kildare finished atop their group with twelve points, tied with the San Diego Iguanas.

Onto the knockout stage for Kildare, who joined Athletic as the only team playing international football in the early spring. Unlike Athletic, they would win their first tie. Mountbatten Junction of Ad'ihan won the first leg at home 2-1, but Kildare were confident with an away goal in the bag. Two goals from Don Kline in the home leg sparked a 3-0 win and they were through to the final sixteen where they would meet Cafundeu's Ranca Toco, and finally they were asking too much. Ranca won 2-0 at home and then held Kildare to a draw in Kirk County for a 3-1 aggregate win.

2044/45 Clausura

Note: Because the Dancougar calendar is twisted, this season takes place concurrently with World Cup 47 qualifying, which has not concluded yet.

With no major tournaments over the summer, the transfer market was thin as usual. There are also no big-name retirements to speak of, meaning that teams coming into the fall would look like they had during the previous year modulo the draft and any other farm systme moves to address issues. There were still a few moves, though. Lakeport continued to look for their missing piece by grabbing Brian Lobato from Port Vigilence, while Kildare dumped the aging Mitchell Wolford who was gleefully snapped up by King's Eleven. And while Eastport fully expected to bounce back from a bad season, they'd have to do it without Stanley Rocco, who jumped onboard with cross-bay rivals Port Royal. It would turn out to be the wrong move.

Two months into the season, it liked like Lakeport were on the right path. Sixteen points from eight games had them in second place, while Kishin and Kildare were predictably right behind. The real surprise was the torrid pace with which Mizuno started the regular season. Six wins and two losses had them atop the table, and they weren't all garbage wins, either. Port Royal and Kishin were among the victims, and their 4-3 away win against Dynamo Kalinsk in week eight was one of the better games in the early going. The next week, Lakeport assumed the lead with a 2-1 road win at Eastport, who were struggling in 13th. Silexheran import Gopher Sporaskid was starting to see more time off the bench since Lillian DaCosta was having a down year.

Mizuno's pace continued into December, where a 3-1 away to Takano saw them in third place on 25 points, while Lakeport and Kishin forged ahead. That was to be the high point of their season, though, as the overachievers faltered through the month only to rebound by the halfway point, sitting fourth with Stoneridge and Eastport. Dynamo Kalinsk were looking good, rebounding from 11th the previous year to come in at 3rd. Forward Ivan Marchak led the way with eight goals, while the midfield was handed off to Paul Clifton and Francisco Lillo. It was ironic that a team which had prided itself on its ability to build through the draft was now having a tougher time finding young talent due to lower draft positions, and they'd become buyers in the international market to try and keep a winning football team in the Igor Valley.

The top three maintained their positions throughout the next month, and by the beginning of Februrary, Kishin were five points ahead of Kalinsk while Lakeport slipped to third. Kildare were still in the hunt in fourth, but Kishin were flying ahead despite constantly losing Turner to international duty. Soma wasn't getting much first team action, though, and the rest of the team's depth became apparent. Yasuo Ishihara and Louis Ransberger were solid in the midfield, and forward Saburo Nishino was an excellent deputy up front. The top of the table remained static as they entered March, and not even an embarassing 5-1 loss at Grandborough seemed to dampen Kishin's mood. But in Week 32, a 1-0 loss to Chuuoushi, coupled with Lakeport's 4-1 romp over Teknika, cut the gap to three.

Two weeks later, Kishin got some help against Kalinsk and Lakeport... from them! Kalinsk's 1-0 road win pulled them into a tie for second for J-Mac's boys, but that meant that Kishin pulled six points clear by rolling 5-0 over Aiken. That was the end of it. Kishin stretched the lead to nine points with a Week 36 victory over cross-town rivals Athletic and that sealed the trophy. Kalinsk and Lakeport were neck and neck in the battle for second, with Kalinsk would take on goal difference.

The feel-good story of the year had to be Teknika Schlieffen's massive jump in the table from last to ninth, and it was even more impressive when one considered how often star midfielder John Schiermeier was away on national team duty. It was Lincoln McFarland who blossomed in his absense, and they also got good production from draft pick Kenny Banister, who starred in Di Bradini Cup 10.

International Qualifiers

For the first time in a long time, there'd be no international football in the Kishin delta after Eastport's poor Apertura was matched by Port Royal's Clausura. That hurt their two-year point totals, but the clubs were out of reasons for complain. It seemed like the increased spending had increased competition at the top, given the motion from season to season. Kishin had played the most consistently and were easily able to claim Dancougar's automatic group stage entry.

CMSC XXXV Preview

If the Cafundelense First Division is the mother of modern domestic football, then the Candelaria And Marquez Soccer Championship is the flirty little sister. A relative neophyte in international terms, a combination of astute financing and sheer doggedness has seen the CMSC somehow contrive to become the second-best club league in the whole bleedin’ multiverse, if them ranky thingies are to be believed. And who among us would argue with that kind of heavy-duty maths, eh?

Last season was one of mixed fortunes for Candelaria, with the league title going to Green Island – a side not from Candelaria or Marquez at all, would you Adam and Eve it, tch? – and Marquez-Onwere settling for second, but Albrecht FC were named Champions’ Cup champions for the second time in two seasons (two of our seasons, anyway… it’s a tad complicated, don’t fret about it), and Caires City took the Globe Cup under somewhat controversial circumstances and remain ranked a narrow second in the formal international coefficients.

Despite a (fairly) rigid quota system and its curious domestic taboos and politics, the CMSC is still one of the most international leagues in the multiverse, with well over fifty nations represented in the top-flight at some point or another and a diverse range of countries – from global powerhouses like Starblaydia and Valanora to tenderfoots Sargossa and Toyur – making up the squads of the eighteen CMSC1 teams. A significant chunk of the foreign contingent is in fact supplied by NAPPC and Tenderville United – two clubs who are about as Candelariasian as pixies and in actuality hail from the nearby islands of Nethertopia, an invitation which, on reflection, was not as much as a cunning plan as it first appeared. Not now the latter’s actually doing well…

Any road up, this season will be slightly different than most – primarily in way of fact that it’s starting a wee bit later, with the islands gripped by an epidemic of hay fever, gastroenteritis, acute impetigo, athletes foot, mouth ulcers, earache, heartburn, the teething of wisdom teeth and other minor ailments that we really shouldn’t be making such a fuss about but there you go. There’ll be no daily reports during the Apertura, with normal service resuming following a nice big update at the half-way stage. Arright? Deal with it, bitches.

Transfer Market: Bringing in Ogus Kures, on the last year of his contract at Albrecht FC, is a key move at the base of the midfield to supplement or supplant the aging Ely, while counter-attacking full-back Campbell Raviranjan is picked up from MN Smith.
Star Names: The aforementioned va Drake has been considered the CMSC’s marquee player for a goodly while now, but the job done by his countryfolk Durosa out wide and Dorack at the back cannot be underestimated, while Anwamanë adorns many a bedroom wall – and, with the emergence of local girl Jhanna Young, the GIZ are increasingly the grubby raincoat brigade’s team of choice
Options: On the left, centre and right of the midfield, aggressive Nethie Michel Mulder and home-grown distributor Tom Osborne respectively will get games while Jameson Aldren may well steal Young’s Next Big Thing tag. The battle between the sticks may be key however, with Stockley fighting off the veteran title-winner Darren Bryson and youngster Kris Dean.
The Fans Expect: While their home island remains in an increasingly unhappy state, a proper bid for Champions’ Cup glory would help to display their plight to a wider international public. Please.
The Pundits Expect: That bids on all fronts could be a challenge too far for that defense, but Durosa and va Drake could yet deliver a long awaited TQCC semi-final.

Background: A club created for the inaugural CMSC season and long-time overachievers as a result, MarquezOW’s principal links were to the youthful make-up of their university city and the surrounding Hispanic countryside – prior to the involvement of Sam Wendell, whose cash helped transform the club once more before his untimely death last term. Harvey’s team failed to deliver him a posthumous title by the narrowest of margins, but they remain extremely strong in all departments.
Transfer Market: Top scorer Augustine Dennin allowed his contract to run down and Daniel Dos Santos’ move to Dancougar seemed rather unnecessary given the riches available to Harvey – and forcing him to shuffle his pack somewhat, bringing in midfield dynamo Katie Cincoski to partner the powerhouse Joãio, and improving the backline yet further with Starblaydi international Villasenior.
Star Names: Souto Maior emerged as a true talent last year and will continue to feel the pressure to score, but the naranja can also claim a superb home-grown (kinda) ‘keeper, two skipping wingers that on their day can tie anyone up in knots, and the Big Blues central defensive pairing.
Options: Besides the big journeymen up front, Bas Smit and Wayne Sanchez, Harvey can only really call on youngsters in a deliberately thinner squad than last season – but the likes of creative midfielder Wildash Gatti and fullback Alejandro Valdez could already be ready for the big time themselves.
The Fans Expect: While an unassuming lot in general, they rightfully see themselves as title favourites and contenders for overseas honours.

Background: The second-biggest club in the country by general consensus, the capital’s more suburban side are always there or thereabouts but last term saw long-time manager Asdrubal Espinoza depart for the Pocoan international job, the club itself fall into the slender fingers of some unfathomable foreigners, and their league form collapse. Mannasuch is a big name but a justly large reputation, but a mixture of aging stars and untested youngsters sees eyebrows raised at their chances, while the manager’s pre-season team selections have been nothing if not…odd.
Transfer Market: Big grumpy Kjarlik Tashkir (a Yaforite… moving to a club apart from you-know these days? Surely some mistake…?) will sure up the left of the back three, for some reason, with the other notable new arrivals being up front – and, most importantly, that includes the truly awesomely named Ausilio Calabrese. We’ve got ‘im! We’ve got the big ol’ brassica! In your face, Sargossa! Nyaah! Meanwhile, in a shameless foreshadowing of the plot for World Cup 56, teen striker Samson Patris and Bavent has gone on loan to Stein-los Turkish.
Star Names: Pushing well into their thirties now, Niv Cohen and Greg Innisvale remain CMSC talents par excellence, while Turkish will be hoping that this is the season where Hoxton local Daniel Bakker emerges as a world-class goalscorer. Much relies on the talent of Werner, following a disappointing XXXIV, to command the centre of the park.
Options: This, really, is what it’s all about – with notable names including WC46 C&M internationals God’s Power Adekunde at left-back and Darren Robinson galloping through the centre apparently left out in favour of flighty box-to-box star John Yeoman and no less unpredictable midfield lefty Mo Dirie – with Mannasuch either showing his genius, or being well ready to be ritually slaughtered and cloned, or whatever it is they do over there.
The Fans Expect: Probably not the title on Mannasuch’s first go, so finishing ahead of the other lot and putting in a good showing at the TQCC would do them. Albrecht FC’ve won it twice since they last did, after all.
The Pundits Expect: A complete division among those in the know, with Turkish predicted to romp to the title in some quarters and face a relegation nightmare in others. Mannasuch will certainly need to win over the skeptics quickly.

El Nacional Spread The Net

It’s that time of year when transfer news dominates the sports dailies but this season it’s not players that are causing the most speculation, it’s a managerial vacancy. El Nacional, the Archipelago’s largest and most popular club, are in the market for a new manager and club president Diego Ruano has confirmed that they won’t be confining their search to within Sargossan borders.

“Certainly we’re not ruling out domestic candidates but given are recent success both domestically and in the Globe Cup was under a foreign coach it would be ridiculous not to consider appointing someone else from overseas.”

That coach was of course veteran Nethertopian Rob Kietecs who, in three years at the helm, led the club to the runners-up spot in the SuperLiga three times and claimed a Copa Sargossa win. He also masterminded El Nacional’s two global cup campaigns that led to appearances in the group stages of the Globe Cup in the past two seasons making the Goza giants comfortable the most successful Sargossan club internationally. Now he has left to coach the Sargossa national side Ruano is looking for someone to continue the trend. Both Dínamo Maturín’s José Marín and Mercadel’s Juan Manuel Del Rios have been linked with the position but the club have insisted that they won’t be rushing into a decision. So there’s plenty of time for any overseas candidates who might fancy the challenge to get their CVs in.

Preview: Fans in Tundra Falls have a good feeling about this season. Their roster remains young and talented, with a strong defensive focus. Mariner fans believe this is the best team that they have ever had in the Premier League format. Springfield’s explosive offense got even more dangerous with the high priced addition of Angel Kenworthy from Qazox. Alongside Brett Carlson and Stacie Kerrigan, the Thoroughbreds will score a ton, and they still veteran keeper Lane McCarville as well as aggressive defender Eric Fraser making them a top candidate. Defending champion Loudon, as well as Centralia have experienced very little turnover. Pocono City remains active in their rebuilding, signing the first ever non-human to play in the NPL. Harroya Lightning of Bears Armed expected to draw a lot of media attention to see how she adapts to playing with humans, instead of ursines. Kevin Lewis has done a great job with the Capitals rebuilding (though it always helps to have money doesn’t it?). Olympia has improved their defense even more, and their fans also believe this could be their year. As is the case with Tundra Falls, fans of the Gladiators believe this is the best roster they have ever had in this format. Southport should still be strong, though they still are a bit young, so maybe not yet ready for a title quite yet. Dover City finally has their much needed goalkeeper, signing Brian Carver after he exercised the relegation clause in his contract to leave Hampton. Putnam Lake has had a high spending period as well, landing Starblaydi midfielder Jeb Sharong as the featured addition to go with a promising group of forwards led by veteran Calvin Lane and an underrated Larry Rokowski, but like Southport, they still look to need a few pieces to make a title run. South Charlotte feels that even they can contend, with their very balanced roster. South Tier’s addition of Cassadaigua’s Tara Demarco was the first ever international player purchased by the Seagulls. All in all, we expect things to be competitive once again at the top of the table. If we have any sleepers, be on the look out for Pittstown and Rushville. The promoted teams are Bradford Town, making their first appearance; Portsmouth, a frequent up and down team; and Dover Town, who no longer will be used as Dover City’s “minor league affiliate”.

With all of this high spending on transfers, there have been some calls for the NPL to establish a salary cap. Mid market teams such as South Tier, Brighton, and both North and South Charlotte have called for the measure as they have been rather annoyed with how quickly Pocono City was able to rebuild just by throwing the endless supply of Empire Motors money at people, and they correctly point out that Loudon did the same exact thing about eight years ago. Springfield’s purchase of Angel Kenworthy also irritated these teams who don’t have the resources that the big teams have. Springfield responds by reminding them that they are a mid-market themselves, just one with an owner who chooses to put the money into the team instead of his wallet or the pockets of his corporate executives. Right now nothing is expected as this is still a minority voice, but if some more mid-market teams follow suit, this could be worth watching in a year or two.

At halfway: The offense of the Thoroughbreds sets the pace, as they draw out to a seven point lead at halfway with 52 total points. In those games, they are average just over two goals per game. Carlson-Kerrigan-Kenworthy is proving very dangerous, and the team is getting good enough defense and goalkeeping. It’s a pretty nice cushion, but they can’t feel too comfortable, because just a brief slump would put them back in a tight back. Tundra Falls is in second and Olympia third, those two teams separated by just a point, and interestingly the GF and the GA of these two teams are identical. Southport, Loudon, and Putnam Lake are all within three points of Olympia and Pocono City and Dover City are in the mix as well. One of the stories in the first half has been that the defensive juggernaut Centralia Cougars are simply not near the top of the table, they are tenth, but sixteen points behind Springfield right now, and rumors are swirling that James Martin may lose his job over it and his assistant, Casey Berber would take over. If that happened, Casey would become the first foreign head coach (Dancougar) of an NPL team. The teams we mentioned as possible sleepers, Pittstown and Rushville don’t look as though they will be that. At the bottom, newcomers Bradford Town and Dover Town are having a tough go of it, as is Hastings. Those teams are solidly in the bottom three, but if one of them plays well enough in the second half, there’s a pack of seven of them that could possibly in trouble including NPL mainstays Daytopia and Stroudsbourg.

The Finish: At one point, Springfield pulled away to as much as a fourteen point lead in the second half. They lost a few games late, so that coupled with Tundra Falls playing well down the stretch made the final table look closer at the top then it really was all year. Coached by former World Cup player Nate Stratton, the Thoroughbreds won their games by scoring a bunch of goals, record one 9-0 victory along the way (over last place Hastings). Tundra Falls and Olympia had themselves a nice little battle for second place, and that was meaningful because it had TQCC implications. Olympia will have to settle for the Globe Cub once again. Behind them, simply a huge pack of teams stuck at 83 and 82 points, including the defending champions from Loudon, who may have been showing their age a little bit. Pocono City will be happy to return to champions league play as they head to the Globe Cup, and Centralia’s second half resurgence will mean that James Martin’s coaching job in intact for now, although he is rumored to be resigning anyway and Berber will take over this team. Though rumors have it that Centralia could opt for Brighton’s Mark McCafferty, who was a former Cougar. If they would, then look for Brighton to be the one that hires Berber as head coach. Either way, Casey looks to be leading a team next season. Also very happy with their season will be Putnam Lake, as they are a part of that big pack. They had been on a slight decline, and spent a lot of money to try and correct this. They’ll want to do better then 9th, but they look to have themselves sorted out now to prevent a further drop. Speaking of dropping, Hastings was terrible in the second half and will head down. Bradford Town’s stay ends up lasting one season at this level, and Thumbria Bay will also be relegated. Although recently they’ve stayed at the NPL level, they’ve bounced around before. Fans of Daytopia, Ashland, and Stroudsbourg see their teams survive for now, but they are very concerned with how badly their team’s disappointed.

Transfer Market: the team seems to work to become a new Petardos, with a bench full of stars. The arrival of Fernández Montes will refresh the goalkeeper position, while Montego and Dante come to build a midfield ready to set up many goals, although still weak defensively. Vervánt comes as one of the main substitute players of the team.
Fans’ Favourites: the defender Hizzen Hocn is the fans’ favourite with a good margin over his opponent, mostly due to his many years of service with the silver shirt. Kortsarian and Jeong Jihun are slowly winning their space too, and others (like Lampert and Kariid) as liked players.
