Saintland National Information

History of Saintland

Saintland was founded in 966. Prior to that year, the island that is now Saintland was an uninhabited island in the World Changers region near the north pole. In the year 966, the Christian Church, which was still united at that time, held a now-forgotten Council. At this Council, they discussed some arcane matters related to Christology. There were 2 factions at this council that had irreconcilable differences. The majority faction are known today as the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

However, a small minority of Christian bishops rejected the decision of the Council of 966. Knowing that they would be persecuted for their beliefs if they remained, they left their homes and got on a number of ships. Their brothers and sisters, members of the nobility, went along with them. A Prince by the name of Paulus chose to go with them, because he believed they were right. They set out across the sea, praying that God would guide them to safety.

Somehow, they ended up traveling several thousand miles by sea, arriving at a remote island far to the north of their original homes. They were widely believed to have perished at sea. Soon, the very existence of the Council of 966 would be forgotten. The Prince would be crowned King Paulus I, the first King of the Kingdom of Saintland. Centuries went by and the Sanctii were able to keep their existence secret from the rest of the world.

Despite their isolation from the rest of the world, starting in 1038, the King's Government sent periodic expeditions to explore the outside world. They would inevitably return to Saintland, with information regarding what had happened since the last expedition. The explorers brought knowledge of new inventions back to Saintland. The King consulted with the Patriarch of the Church and they jointly decided which of the new inventions and innovations were worth adopting and which should not be adopted. This would prove to be very useful to the authorities in Saintland, as they successfully kept the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment out of the Kingdom.

The policy of isolation would be ended in 1788. In 1825, King Josephus X decided to abolish the practice of serfdom. After breaking the power of the nobility, King Josephus X industrialized Saintland. However, Saintland never adopted laissez-faire policies and has only developed a barely modern economy. Usury laws remain on the books, intellectual property legislation remains non-existent and protective labor legislation was adopted very early on in the industrialization process. As Saintland industrialized, a special legal status called "foreign resident" was created, which permits foreign nationals to reside in Saintland and remain exempt from some of Saintland's laws.

Today, Saintland is a semi-modern nation. Despite that, the nation retains its divine right absolute monarchy and the Church of Saintland remains a powerful force in the island nation. Saintland's population remains relatively small, as it is estimated at around 600,000. Despite the small population, Saintland has somehow developed a large number of world-class athletes that have been able to go toe-for-toe with the best athletes from the rest of the multiverse.

Recently, King Paulus XV was assassinated at the World Bowl Championship Game. Following those events, the former Prince Petrus ascended to the Throne as King Petrus XX. He has dedicated this World Cup of Hockey to the memory of his father.

Transportation

Due to the lack of an automobile manufacturing industry in Saintland and the prohibitive cost of importing foreign-made cars, the automobile has never been popular in Saintland. Several months ago, King Paulus XV decided to ban private ownership of automobiles for public safety reasons. Therefore, visitors to Saintland will not have the use of automobiles of any sort.

Under the laws of Saintland, automobiles may only be used by police, the military, fire departments and licensed bus or taxi services. In the cities, you should be able to find a bus or a taxi. If you see a police or military vehicle on the road, it is likely headed toward a crime scene of some sort or is being used to transport a criminal who has been apprehended by the authorities. It is highly recommended to move to the sidewalk when you see an automobile coming down the street.

Saintland has a highly developed high-speed rail network that connects every community in Saintland, from the tiniest villages to the cities of St. Petrus and St. Paulus. This is the only fairly quick way to travel between the communities of Saintland.

Bicycles are a popular form of transportation in Saintland. There are bicycle rental stores in most communities throughout the Kingdom. The most popular bicycle rental stores, among international visitors to Saintland, are located at the St. Paulus and St. Petrus airports. Bicycle parking is provided throughout Saintland and locks are included with every bike. The use of helmets is optional, but recommended.

Lodging

Until recently, Saintland lacked the necessary lodging to host large numbers of foreign visitors at a given time. However, in the hopes of luring major international sports events to Saintland, the King's Government constructed a number of hotels in the major cities. All players, coaches and officials from the nations that advance to Saintland will receive complimentary lodging at the Royal Hotel in St. Petrus. If requested, hotel staff will perform a wake up call to ensure that your players make it to the stadium in time for the start of their game.

Weather

Saintland is located in a polar region, which means that the weather is relatively cold, even during the summer. The average summer temperature in Saintland is 14 degrees (Celsius), which is the equivalent of 57.2 Fahrenheit. On an exceptionally warm day in Saintland, the weather may reach the mid-70s Fahrenheit (24 Celsius), but temperatures in the neighborhood of 7 Celsius (44.6 Fahrenheit) are not unheard of during the summer.

As this World Cup of Hockey is being held in the month of February, temperatures will often be below freezing (negative Celsius or below 32 Fahrenheit) during the World Cup of Hockey. Snow is a strong possibility and the ice at outdoor ice rinks should be in little or no danger of melting.

Language

Saintland speaks a dialect of Latin. Sanctii Latin is a living language, so it does have some differences from classical Latin. The degree of difference between the Latin of the Vulgate and the Latin spoken in Saintland is similar to the difference between the English of the King James Bible and the English that is widely spoken today.

Although Latin is the native language of the Sanctii, foreign language education is heavily emphasized in the nation's education system. The average person you run into on the street should be able to speak English relatively fluently, so there is not much of a language barrier.

Currency

Saintland uses a currency based on bullion. The main coins in Saintland are the Denarius, which is a one-ounce gold coin and the Argentii, a one-ounce silver coin. Gold and silver coins are also available in smaller weights, all the way down to 1/100th of an ounce of silver.

If you do not possess bullion, Universal Standard Dollars are widely accepted, as are the Republican Thaler and the Acedonian Ace.

Entertainment

Saintland is a theocracy that operates under a very strict version of Biblical law, so many forms of entertainment are illegal in Saintland.

There are 5 television networks in Saintland, which are numbered from Royal One to Royal Five. These networks will be airing heavy coverage of the World Cup of Hockey, although if the Maple Leaf Bowl starts before the WCoH ends, it would also be broadcast.

All players on all of the teams competing in the World Cup of Hockey will receive complimentary copies of the Saint upon their arrival in Saintland. The Saint is an "interactive entertainment" handheld device which also has numerous features that are commonly found in smartphones. Every Saint will include a copy of the Bible and the Real Ice Hockey Simulator. This will be the full version of the Real Ice Hockey Simulator.

Additional programming is available on Sanctustube. The Royal Networks maintain a popular Sanctustube channel, which will include live streams and on-demand access to every game from the World Bowl. It already includes on-demand access to any game from the last 3 World Cup cycles, completely free of charge. If you'd rather watch programming from your home nation, you can probably find it on Sanctustube. Outside of Saintland, if you watch an unauthorized video of a non-Sanctii show on Sanctustube, you will see the show unedited. However, when accessed within Saintland, Sanctustube displays a highly edited version. Anything that is deemed incompatible with the values of Saintland will be removed and background music is usually replaced with music of Sanctii origin. It is not unheard of for the King's Government censors to ideologically translate a foreign television program or movie to reflect the values of Saintland.

There are movie theaters in the cities of Saintland which mostly show (low-budget) movies produced by Sanctii directors. Movies must be approved by the censors before they can be shown in movie theaters. Sometimes, popular foreign films will be broadcast in the theater, typically after an ideological translation and massive editing.

Cantus Virginum is the most popular musical group in Saintland. The group consists of around a hundred members at any given time. Their members are young women who are either still legally minors under the laws of Saintland or have only recently become adults. Their music is primarily popular with their peers and with girls slightly younger than them. It is widely considered, even among citizens of Saintland, to be of poor quality. However, it is considered impolite in Saintland to publicly criticize their (lack of) singing ability and they remain extremely popular.

Important Laws

As Saintland is a theocratic nation, pornography, prostitution and public nudity are all highly illegal. The ban on pornography includes "written" pornography, a category that includes most romance novels of foreign origin. Tobacco, Cannabis and other recreational drugs are also illegal. Drinking alcohol is legal, although it is highly regulated. There are limits on how much alcohol an individual may purchase. Drinking alcohol outside of communion is unlawful for minors, university students and soldiers that are not officers. Excessive drunkenness in public is illegal. Contrary to popular misconception, protesting is actually legal in Saintland, but sedition and blasphemy are illegal. In effect, this means that any protest against the King's Government or the Church of Saintland is considered a criminal act. However, a protest against horse racing at the Saintland Triple Crown by citizens of the Equestrian States was permitted. There are laws on the books that prohibit aiding unlawful organizations, such as Feministvs Sanctvsterra and Vindicta Progressvm, in any way whatsoever. Possession of firearms by anybody who is not a police officer or a soldier is strictly prohibited.

While there are sumptuary laws on the books, most of them will not be enforced upon visitors to the World Cup of Hockey. However, women who are playing in or attending WCoH games in Saintland will be required to wear a head covering. Visitors who are not following the sumptuary laws should keep their IDs with them at all times and be ready to show them to any soldier or police officer upon request. This exemption will apply to nationals from nations that have a team competing in the World Cup of Hockey and will remain in effect until up to 72 hours after the elimination of their nation's national team. Any foreign nationals that remain in Saintland 3 days after the elimination of their team will automatically obtain visitor status, with their 90 day clock to either apply for foreign resident status, apply for immigrant status or leave starting at the moment they arrived in Saintland.

Customs

Everybody visiting Saintland for the World Cup of Hockey should plan to go through Customs prior to entering the nation. Customs is a branch of the Royal Army, which is tasked with keeping contraband out of Saintland. Customs will thoroughly search all items that are taken into Saintland. They will primarily be searching for guns, tobacco, cannabis, other recreational drugs, blasphemous material, seditious material and pornography. If a book appears to be "written pornography," that can cause a long delay in Customs while the Customs officials check the list of known works of "written pornography" to see if the book in question is on the list.

Venues

Royal Stadium

Royal Stadium, located in St. Petrus, is Saintland's National Stadium. The spacious stadium seats 62,383 fans and is the home of the National Soccer Team and the National Gridiron Team. Royal Stadium normally has a grass surface, which was re-seeded last spring after an incident at the World Bowl XX. The field at Royal Stadium is large enough to hold 2 hockey rinks and it will be set up to do so during the WCoH.

Via Damascus Stadium

The Via Damascus Stadium, which means "Road to Damascus" in English, is located in St. Paulus, the largest city in Saintland. Via Damascus is Saintland's second most prestigious stadium. It was the home of the National Rugby Union Team during the 20th World Cup of Rugby Union. It is also the home stadium of the St. Paulus teams for soccer and gridiron. The stadium seats 32,189. Like Royal Stadium, its field is large enough to fit 2 ice rinks at once and it will do so.

Royal Park

Located in St. Petrus, Royal Park is the home of the Saintland National Baseball Team. Seating 51,773 fans, Royal Park is primarily used as a baseball stadium. However, since baseball is not currently in season, Royal Park has been temporarily converted into a gridiron stadium for World Bowl XXII. Unlike the other stadiums in Saintland that will be hosting World Bowl games, Royal Park is not big enough to fit a Saintland Rules (OOC: Canadian Football) field, but it is big enough to fit a World Bowl-sized field. However, this means that the crowd at Royal Park will be closer to the field than crowds at the other stadiums in Saintland. As Saintland's National Baseball Team is not competing in WBC 29 (OOC: Feministvs Sanctvsterra is), Royal Park will host an ice rink.

Royal Square Garden

Royal Square Garden, located in St. Petrus, is the most prestigious arena in Saintland. It is the stadium home of both Saintland's National Hockey Team and National Basketball Team. The arena seats 17,467.

Amphitheatrum Confessiones

The Amphitheatrum Confessiones in St. Augustinus is the home of the St. Augustinus soccer club in Saintland's domestic soccer league. The Amphitheatrum seats 24,306. During the WCoH, the Amphitheatrum Confessiones will host a single ice rink.

Apostolic Arena

The Apostolic Arena, located in St. Paulus, is the largest arena in Saintland, seating 19,302. However, the Arena is somewhat run-down. For that reason, it has never hosted international competition before. However, with King Petrus XX scrambling to find venues for the World Cup of Hockey, he had no choice but to host an international event in this arena, which was scheduled to be renovated during the summer.

Progress Stadium

Progress Stadium, located in St. Ioannes, is a stadium located on the campus of Progress High School. The stadium seats 17,303 and is used by the St. Ioannes gridiron and soccer teams. It will host an ice rink during the WCoH.

Civitate Dei Arena

Civitate Dei Arena, located in St. Augustinus, is a recently-completed arena on the campus of the University of St. Augustinus with a capacity of 13,209. Although it was originally intended as a sports arena, it has primarily been used thus far to host concerts and other events, since St. Augustinus does not currently have a basketball, ice hockey or handball team. It will host a single ice rink during the WCoH.

Backup G #9 Ioannes Laetonius

Notes

Prince Josephus is a younger brother of the King of Saintland. He is also the younger brother of Prince Ioannes and the twin brother of Prince Andreas. Line #1 is the scoring line and the one that handles power plays and penalty kills. Clovius is the 2-time reigning league MVP in Saintland. The Trebatius brothers, Doessenius brothers and Murrius brothers are the brother combinations on this team. In ice hockey, as in every team sport, the style of play in Saintland's national league is very physical and many things that are considered fouls in international play aren't fouls in Saintland. Sanctii defensemen are very likely to get into fights at the slightest provocation, if their team is losing or if they are facing a rival and/or somebody they really don't like. This team won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics, but only won 2 out of 10 games at the 21st World Cup of Hockey, where they were plagued by injuries and the distraction of also competing in field hockey and lacrosse. After WCoH 21, most of the players on the team began playing domestically in Quebec. This led to a successful 22nd WCoH which saw them finish second in a tough group, at the expense of Qazox.

The Maroon Lions were drawn into group two with the above teams. We predict wins in our matches with Frusennia and Swibia, and close games with Jeckland and Perlasilangan, and we will probably lose to Levivania, Barangay, Sicoutimont, Qazox, and Torisakia. This would leave us on 8 points, with a final record of 2-2-5.

From the Andita Factbook entry on Ice Hockey:
Due to the long winters and icy conditions in Anditia, Ice Hockey tends to lead all other sports in both in formal participation and viewership. The Federation of Anditon Hockey (FAH) comprises the professional competition league at the national level. This league, founded in AC213, has its roots in smaller leagues that had been formed within the states previously. Currently there are 16 teams in two divisions that play a 67 game season (3 games out of conference, 6 within conference) with the top 8 teams making the playoffs (top 4 each conference, 4v1, 3v2, winner advances). The winner of the FAH, most recently the Helsar Icebergs, receives the coveted Winkton Cup.
Outside of the national competition of the FAH, Anditia also competes at the international level in a variety of competitions with their team the Anditia Wolverines wearing Gold with Red and Blue accents.

Lions to Enter 23rd Edition of WCoH

Martin Granger, Staff Reporter

The Lions have entered into qualification for the 23rd edition of the World Cup of Hockey, their second time entering this major international competition. The last time they entered, they finished with a record of 3-3-6 (W-D-L), for 9 points and fifth of seven teams in their group. They played a much more determined and skilled first half of qualifying, but faded down the stretch due to fatigue and what seemed like a general inattentiveness (OOC: I was unable to RP my final 3 matches due to RL issues and lost them all by an aggregate of 11-1). Needless to say, Head Coach Cecil Palmer was furious and expects a better effort this time around from much the same team. The U20 side finished third at the World Juniors Championship in San José Guayabal, defeating Perlasilangan 1-0 in the third-place match. There is only one player from that squad on this team, but some of the recent graduates will hopefully bring their fire and enthusiasm to this veteran squad. The team is mostly composed of players from the domestic NAHL, which has a high level of play, but also features a few players currently playing at the AHL level of the United States' NHL. The group matchups have not been announced yet, but we'll preview the roster right here. Cecil Palmer prefers a moderate defensive style, one that focuses on discipline and toughness. You won't see many penalties conceded, but you also won't see any short-handed breaks down the ice. This is a team that makes their money on the power play and on their excellent passing.

Nova Anglicana Lions Senior Hockey Team

Head Coach: Cecil Palmer
Style Modifier: -1
Captain: Rene Robinson
Assistant Captains: Roger Day, Andres Kelly

1st Line
RW Kermit Lea, 34 - "The Frog" nickname is inevitable, but he's led the league in goals 2 of the last 4 years
C Rene Robinson, 33 - the captain is the league's premier center and an excellent two-way player; he will be depended on for a lot
LW Matt Grier, 27 - Palmer likes him so much because he always knows when to (and not to) make the extra pass, picks up his fair share of goals as well

2nd Line
RW Derek Jensen, 31 - Jensen is quiet, but a deadly shooter, handles the puck well
C Troy Parker, 25 - young center is a natural-born leader, plenty of energy, but needs to keep himself under control and work on his offensive game
LW Jacques Crist, 32 - Crist has a habit of leaking out, which annoys Palmer, but he's succeeded enough at it to have free rein

3rd Line
RW Jay Schwartz, 28 - loves the wraparound, team prankster
C Mitch Holcomb, 35 - longtime vet Holcomb provides stability on the third line, contributes a little of everything
LW Jordan Bergeron, 24 - former AHL Norfolk Admiral, he's got as much raw talent as anyone, but needs a ton of coaching

4th Line
RW Doug LaRose, 30 - bit of a banger for a wing, his work ethic is second to none, goal-scoring skills leave a lot to be desired
C Dallas Carlson, 20 – the U20 captain has enormous confidence and the skills to match, great honor for him to be selected
LW Bruno Holguin, 34 - Holguin provides leadership and veteran experience on this line, pretty good defender

Pair 1
Zach McCoy, 29 - plays with Russell in NAHL, chemistry extremely valuable
Josh Russell, 31 - provides the bulk to McCoy's finesse, excellent tag team duo

Pair 2
Roger Day, 36 - disciplined player may be getting older, but he's still one of the best at stick checks
Gregg Barrett, 32 - excellent passer, but not afraid to clog the net and look for rebounds

Pair 3
Dwayne Burke, 33 - led the league in blocked shots, rarely takes a penalty
Garry Foster, 32 - not afraid to drop the gloves and go after someone, sizzling slap shot

Pair 4
Cody Riley, 27 - Riley is one of the league's best defensemen, bit overaggressive at times, can lead to fights
Marq Brint, 22 – Brint is already physically developed and gets a spot on the senior team despite his age, plays all facets of the game well

Goaltenders
Andres Kelly, 32 - Kelly is equally adept with the glove as he is with the rest of his body, conceded just 7 goals in first 9 games last time around
Bryan Blake, 25 - young man had an excellent defensive campaign that helped lead his team to the playoffs
Todd Ingram, 20 – capable of standing on his head at times, but is particular vulnerable in the 5-hole, upper half stronger than lower half

Power Play 1
1st Line + Defensive Pair 1

Power Play 2
2nd Line + Defensive Pair 2

Penalty Kill 1
1st Line + Defensive Pair 1

Penalty Kill 2
4th Line + Defensive Pair 3

The Lions will play their home games at the National Arena (cap. 14,000) in the capital city of Londinium.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following...
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes, two per match, of which one can last beyond the current game.
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes, subject to above restrictions.
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players:Yes, but only one unless you eject a commentate number of your own. For instance, you can eject two of my players if you eject one of your own. This includes coaches.
Godmod Other Events: Yes, go crazy, do anything you want except assassinate Lord Almighty Gregory. But expect reciprocity. If you kill one of my players, there's a good chance our enemy crushers will crush your player to death, for instance.
Other: If your RP involves my nation and you do not mention it by name, please TG me to give me a heads up. You do not need to wait for permission. However, I search for my name in the forums to find RPs to respond to and if you don't mention it by name, that doesn't help me. This includes striking out the "isgod" in "Gregoryisgodistan" as in "Gregoryisgodistan" because that doesn't show up in the search. So either mention my country by name (in an OOC note if necessary) or TG me.

Our head coach is Horse Beater LAL9120
Our assistant coaches are Elementary School Teacher KS9193 and Chef P9139.

1st Line Forwards
33 LW Weatherman 92UDH9111
23 C Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Harry Rupertson (C)
29 RW Pervert Chaser JDJJ8138

2nd Line Forwards
91 LW Slave Beater NDNSHYQ19 (A)
20 C Farmer MLA99000
3 RW Train Operator HAUP9001 Replaced by #3 Enemy Crusher Ronald Fatgoat after the group stage due to being ritually sacrificed

3rd Line Forwards
10 LW Prison Guard AQIIUS
11 C Pervert Chaser LL00PP19F
92 RW Actor 81248D8J (A)

4th Line Forwards
45 LWEnemy Crusher Quarreltine Thomas (EXECUTED)
59 C Slave Beater LZ013ANZBAB
60 RW Enemy Crusher Funny McBigfries (EXECUTED)

1st Line Defense
44 LD Military SuperGeneral Larry Willingsley
49 RD Military SuperGeneral Harry Willingsley

2nd Line Defense
50 LD Prison Guard QQQQPPPAL
51 RD Police Officer PIODO

3rd Line Defense
2 LD Slave Beater JQOAL94000
93 RD Enemy Crusher Foofoo McTootles (EXECUTED)

4th Line Defense
71 LD Enemy Crusher Biggy McParis (EXECUTED)
9 RD Slave Beater KKALMN

Goalkeepers
20 Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel
30 Enemy Crusher Douglas Porkerson
1 Enemy Crusher Fatty McPorkawitz
(BOTH EXECUTED)
4 Enemy Crusher Porky McPorkawitz (added after group stage)
6 Enemy Crusher Furfy "Junior Fatso" McFattel (added after group stage)

Our team is entirely amateurs and they all only play hockey recreationally. The Enemy Crushers in goal don't even play hockey, but they weigh 500 pounds each and we're hoping they're big enough to block almost all the shots without even moving.

Also, note that these are the players real names, the titles are part of the name and are followed by the government ID sequence unless they are important, in which case it's followed by a real name.

Actor 81248D8J is well-known for playing Doybert on the hit TV show "Costa Lunians Say the Darndest Things". Other than that, none of our players are big names.

White:
Image
We will wear dark uniforms for home matches. For away matches, if our opponent wears a dark uniform, we will wear white. If our opponent wears white, we will wear our dark uniform.

Our games will be played at District 2 Ice Arena in District 2, Ward 13, which is one of only four ice arenas in the nation. In addition to being used for hockey, it is also used for recreational ice skating and figure skating. The arena can also be configured for post execution burnings, and a special ventilation system prevents smoke from building up. It takes about 12 hours to transition the floor from hockey/skating rink to post execution burning format, but because of the heat generated by burnings, it takes about 48 hours to get it back to hockey. Therefore, starting 7 days before the tournament, all post execution burnings in District 2, Wards 12-18 (which ordinarily use the Ice Arena) will be moved elsewhere. Wards 12-15 will be held in the burning site normally used for Wards 6-11, which is the park green in Ward 9. Wards 16-18 will share their burning side with Wards 19-23, which is the outdoor basketball courts in Ward 21. This will continue until three days after the conclusion of the group stage, at which time the ice arena will host burnings again.

The capacity of District 2 Ice Arena is 850. Of this, 150 tickets will be allocated to visiting fans, 150 will be available to the general public via the World Cup of Hockey authorities, and 550 will be for Gregoryisgodistan fans. If the Gregoryisgodistan section does not sell out, we will select random people who will be forced to attend. If they do not attend, they will be executed.

What's a Pervert Chaser? Sounds inappropriate.
A pervert chaser is someone whose job it is to chase down those accused of sexually-related crimes, like mooning, nudity, indecent exposure, rape, and molestation, and cut off their private organs, then bring them in for trial, sentencing, and either a fine, slave labor, or execution depending on the offense.

Do you have any strange laws?
Yes, lots. All citizens are required to worship Lord Almighty Gregory numerous times each day, sing the national anthem every hour on the hour, and obey numerous other laws under harsh threats of penalty. For instance, uttering the word "coconut", farting, and eating any food other than gruel or prune juice, among numerous other crimes, are punishable by death.

Oh my god, will we have to follow these laws too?
Gregoryisgodistan respects freedom of religion for foreign visitors as long as the visitor's home country respects the freedom of Gregoryisgodistanis to worship Lord Almighty Gregory, their head of state and claimed deity. If you are from a country that has freedom of religion, you will not be subject to the laws of Gregoryisgodistan, with the exception of those against murder, theft, etc. If, on the other hand, your country only allows a state religion, and/or has banned the Church of Gregoryisgodistan, we will enforce our religion and laws on you full force and expect you to follow them or face the same consequences our citizens would.

What's a Horse Beater?
One form of entertainment in Gregoryisgodistan is where a Horse Beat beats horses with all sorts of torture devices, like whips, maces, pepper spray, and machetes, until the horse dies a horrible painful death. It is like rodeos, only more gruesome. These horses are randomly caught in the countryside by Horse Snatchers, then sold to Horse Recruiters, who bring them to the Horse Beating Show.

I'm from a country with sapient ponies. Should we be afraid?
Our laws prevent sapient beings from being beaten, but also define sentient beings as humans or intelligent extraterrestrials. So alien ponies need not worry. Earth ponies, on the other hand, could theoretically be caught, but as long as they do not roam the countryside with wild, non-sapient ponies, they should be fine, since horse snatchers typically do not look for horses in hotels or hockey rinks.

What's an Enemy Crusher?
Enemy crushers are very heavy Gregoryisgodistani government agents whose job it is to crush and torture criminals to get them to reveal information. They almost always kill the criminal. Enemy Crushers at the World Bowl crushed to death numerous fans, referees, and opponents. They were then rewarded by the Gregoryisgodistani government.

Should I be afraid?
Just don't anger an Enemy Crusher and you'll be fine.

Which players like to fight?
The pervert chasers, prison guards, and slave beaters are very prone to fights due to their violent professions. Additionally, the Enemy Crushers have been known to occasionally come out of goal and try to crush opposing players, referees, or spectators. This often results in their deaths, much like what happened at the World Bowl. Nobody other than Enemy Crushers are capable of killing anyone, though pervert chasers carry their private-cutting knife with them at all times, and in the event a player, coach, fan, or spectator commits a sexual-related crime during a hockey match in Gregoryisgodistan, they will cut off their privates in the middle of the match. This will be very painful. So basically, don't indecently expose yourselves and you should be fine.

Please refer to players by their full name at all times. For instance, our starting goalkeeper should be Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel and our left wing should be Weatherman 92UDH9111. This follows the typical Gregoryisgodistan naming format, which is title and government ID number, except for government VIPs which are title and name. Use both at all times. Do not just say McFattel or 92UDH9111.

The demonym is Gregoryisgodistani. The ice hockey team is nicknamed the Ice Slaves, and you may use this nickname.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following...
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes, but 1 per game
Godmod Injuries to My Players: No. I'll decide the seriousness of the injury
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes. We're an aggressive team.
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes, fights are going to occur, but limit actual ejections to one player or coach per game. 5-mintue major penalties; go for it.
Godmod Other Events: only hockey/weather related, please. No rioting in the streets (we'd only do that if we're eliminated, and never in another country) and no deaths. Visiting players are expected to follow Maineiacs' laws (which are pretty basic stuff -- theft, murder, rape, etc., we're a very laid-back people except when it comes to hockey). Do NOT imprison or execute my players! They will behave in your country.

These are the best of the best from the MHL (Maineiacs Hockey League) in a nation that eats, sleeps, and breathes hockey. Our biggest national holiday is hockey finals week in June. They will likely be tense as this is their first foray into international hockey in some years -- they won the gold medal at the 2nd Winter Olympics -- but they expect to win. Match commentators will not be kind to visiting players. Everyone -- and I mean everyone in Maineiacs takes hockey VERY seriously. Expect to get jeered by little old ladies. Game stoppages to clear debris thrown on to the ice is common. The team plays a fast-paced, hard hitting game. Home games will be played in Madison Square Garden in Maineiacs City (an analog of New York, obviously)

NOTE: When I say they expect to win, I mean in an RP sense; I'm not demanding victories. but I plan to RP a very negative response to losses.

Lzherusskia and The World Cup
Everything You Wanted To Ask But Were Afraid Of Getting Sneered At

We are active in the international sports community, aren't we? Not necessarily successful, but at least active. Like your parents probably said, it's not the winning that counts but the taking part. Your parents were liars, by the way, but this is neither the time nor the place to shatter your comfortable childhood illusions. No, this is the time and the place to break down the World Cup of Hockey and our great nation's place in it. Let's get started.

Meet The New Boss, Same As The Old Boss
Not just a catchy song lyric. After retiring from hockey at the age of 42, saying (accurately) that he had done everything he possibly could as a player, Andrej Reshetnikov swiftly stepped up a level and took command of Vilnera Spriaznen, the team that he captained to six Champion's Cups, meeting with instant success. The transition was hardly a difficult one - Vilnera had grown to mirror their captain's ethos and work ethic almost flawlessly and so all it really meant was that the Ogre never stepped onto the ice himself. With Reshetnikov leading the nation into our first WCoH, expect aggression.

Wanna Fight, Well Come On And Line Up
Obviously, prognosticating on what the lines are going to be is a game one has to play with a heavy pinch of salt, because none of us can reasonably claim to know what the coach is really thinking and besides, within about five minutes of the game, any notion of a fixed line will have been subjected to what's known as "The Blender". Oh, the lines will look nice and neat on the depth chart before the game, but there's a reason our players are taught not to get used to playing with anybody in particular and that's because the lines get chopped and changed at a ridiculous rate. With that said, we're not paid to not write, so...

Your Starters For Ten...
A common theme to Reshetnikov's time with Vilnera has centered around the blueline and how, where possible, he likes to pair defensemen up by putting one offensively-minded player with a stay-at-home guy - the theory being that the offensive d-man can join the rush and not have to worry so much about leaving anybody exposed at the back - and that's borne out by the roster selection. Mikhail Proskinov, of course, actually started his career playing the wing and was shifted back to the defense after a coach realised his defensive instincts were fantastically good, so he'll pair with somebody like Zakharik Tolstokozhev, who's nothing short of a rock and is the biggest reason Alekhine Poszar have had any success in recent years.

It's also just sensible to put a youngster with a veteran and, while that's probably more applicable to club level, there's no reason to change it up here if it fits. And it fits here - Grigol Gelashviliev, the nineteen-year-old sensation for Sargkisia, will probably be paired with Luka Zhelezkin or Yuri Dolgorukov to help guide the young Grigol and keep him on the straight and arrow. The sixth spot on the blueline is a toss-up - Radomir Karnaukhov and Timur Yeromeyev both deserve to be there but, if we had to pick, our choice would be Karnaukhov purely because he's played in Champion's Cup games and is probably more used to pressured situations.

In The Blue Corner...
When it comes to the finest left wingers, you begin and end the discussion with Nikolai Shcherbatiski. He's the only player ever to have received special dispensation from the league that allowed him to start playing at age sixteen and now, three years later, he's been the league's top point scorer twice. Unusually, he's much more of a pass-first player than wingers are often expected to be, so it makes sense that he'd be played alongside Karl Myasnikovnik whenever possible because Myasnikovnik is somebody who's significantly more interested in shooting than the typical centre. Pretty much anybody playing along these two would look like a superstar so there's no bad choices, but we'd opt for Sam Kasyanenko - he plays a much more physical game than either of the others and would, hopefully, help balance them out a little.

It's More Like First Among Equals, Really
This is what we mean about the Blender. While "second line" would imply inferiority, the truth is that the next three are just as talented as the top three, and there's really no combination of the six that's a bad one. Denis Vodyanov suffers from playing the same position as Shcherbatski but, having been drafted and spent his entire career under Reshetnikov's watchful eye, it wouldn't be a surprise if he started the game either. He's the closest thing we have to a modern-day Reshetnikov with the added bonus that he scores goals as well. Opposite him, Arkadi Kochakidzev might be a supporter of the Sargkisian Separatist movement, but he's a phenomenal defensive forward as well, which is lucky because centreman Kiril Zavrazhinov is all offense. The coach would do well to keep those two together - opposites attract, after all.

This Is Gonna Get Nasty
A team cannot have success without a blend of skillsets, and the same goes for Lzherusskia as well. The top six provide scoring, graceful offense, flair and hockey that appeals to those who don't like to see blood splattered across the ice - the fourth line, to put it lightly, do. They can still play, of course, but their bread-and-butter is ugliness. Aleksander Trapeznikov is one of the finest in the world for drawing penalties, which is what happens when you constantly needle an opponent and, when that guy inevitably loses it, Leonid Yevdokimov can slide over to pummel his face into the rink. Anton Veselovski receives around a dozen death threats a year from fans furious at his conduct and he is a very dirty player...but we'll let it slide, because it's for the nation.

Sort Of Jogging Along In The Middle
Which leaves the third line, who are stuck in a sort of limbo. Not quite skilled enough offensively to crack the top six, but not of the right mindset and lack of conscience to be fourth liners, the most likely scenario is that they'll be turned into trappers. When an opponent's first line is running rampant, out they'll go, ready to retain possession, bog the game down and generally play dull, dull, dull hockey. But it can work. Can and does - Kostya Kipriyanovski helped Chasten Petrosinya win a Champion's Cup with just those tactics, and Zino Nosov already has that reputation. Between them, they'll make Pavel Zhernakov see sense.

All These Strange Foreign Customs
Many of you who are big hockey fans will already know this from watching games from around the world, but it's worth noting that there are a lot of nations who play international hockey...but don't fight. This is obviously madness - hockey is and always has been a violent sport, and forcing players to adhere to rules that prohibit fighting just mean that the real scumbags are allowed to get away with so much because there's nobody on the ice to police their behaviour. We are proud that Lzherusskia has no time for such frivolities - mess with one of our superstars and the least you can expect a vicious beating. Don't look to the referee to help you, either.

RP Permissions: Choose my scorers, although please note that the vast, vast majority of all goals will be accounted for by the top six. Godmod scoring events, but make them reasonable. Don't just have all our goals be scored by freak shots that make your goalies look invincible. TG me for injuries - minor things I'll pretty much always say yes to, major things I'll be more cautious about, career-enders or worse will be a flat no. Yes to the penalties although, again, most of the penalties will be accumulated by the bottom six and third defensive pairing and again, don't be stupid with it. Respect me and I'll respect you.

Hockey in HopNation

HopNation is a nation that prides itself in the area of sports and leisure with many things happening all over the nation each day. When it comes to hockey, HopNation has something for all levels of skill and dedication. Whether it’s a youth league game in Zorg, a junior league game in Bayern, or even a pickup game at one of the local schools in Glacier you’re bound to find hockey being played not just in the winter but throughout the year. Many of the rinks are open year round for leagues and open skating. Although the sport has a good following and many opportunities for youths to adults it is still only the third most popular sport when looking at the HopNation Broadcasting Networks (HBN) viewership rankings. As hockey in HopNation was originally started to help combat the months of cold and snow, which covers much of HopNation during it’s winter months, it is still growing. The Head of Hockey Operations, Wayne Messierz, hopes that this growth will continue and that it will change those TV ratings, bringing them up to where he thinks they should be, but will it over take Handball (ooc – Handball is Gridiron Football for those unfamiliar with our gridiron team) or contend with Football, only time will tell. The original league in HopNation, the HopNation Hockey League or HHL, originally started with only a handful of teams and could only be played in the winter. This was because originally the teams only had outdoor rinks and could never hold a game if it was above freezing. The league even started to put rinks inside many of the association football venues in order to expand, eventually things got going and many hockey specific arenas were build. The HHL has expanded to fifteen teams and currently has a forty five game schedule that lead up to the VonHopton Cup Playoffs.
