Because because, silly.
Also, the players are their avatars now, merged with the great Minecraft World Web. They exist in all computers, and none, and their fight takes place in ten thousand servers against many millions of foes.

Welcome to the Israel Defense Force. For the next three years, this will be your life. Some of you are career soldiers, officers and senior NCOs. But the vast majority of you are conscripts, having been drafted some time within the last three years.
You may be asking what unit you've been assigned to, or where you'll be posted. You've all been posted to a base in the Golan Heights, near the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria. Most of you are part of the Golani Brigade, a famous and well respected infantry unit within the IDF. Along with the Golani Brigade, troops from various other units within the IDF have been deployed to support the Golani Brigade in the event of an armed incursion into Syria. These include the armor corps, artillery corps, combat engineers, military intelligence, some Air Force assets in the form of attack and transport helicopters, along with Unit 669, the elite combat search and rescue unit of the Israeli Air Force, and a small Sayeret Matkal force, among other troops.
Your orders are to maintain a state of readiness, and be prepared for any possibility. You could be tasked with patrols along the ceasefire line, or you may have to return fire across the ceasefire line. Indirect fire attacks from within Syria are common, and you cannot put it past some group in Syria to attempt to engage Israeli forces in a firefight. Or, under extreme circumstances, you may be asked to begin military operations within Syria to eliminate threats to the State of Israel.
None of you truly expect to have to begin operations in Syria. You think there will maybe be a few cross-border firefights at the most. But for the most part, you think these few months in the Golan will be relatively uneventful, and soon you'll be on leave at the Tel Aviv beaches. There are a few soldiers who are worried about a possible conflict in Syria, but these are a minority. But the unexpected can happen, and you may find yourself in a situation you did not expect to ever happen during your military service.

Anyone know a good reason this could happen?

I'll put up a new Traveller's Cafe within 48 hours. I first wish to see if his RL issues can be worked through, since I know he's busy with exams which end soon.
