When the Abrahamic war came, a group of Knights who had learned the magic arts proceeded to aid the struggling civilian government of Malta in defending the island from a demonic attack. With the collapse of the latter, the Knights promptly took over its place, and in the aftermath of the war, proceeded to build up their forces and training their members in magic, though still possessing a distrust for anything related to Hell and its denizens.

Only physically-fit and pious Catholic humans can become Knights Hospitallers. Women were recently permitted to have active combat roles, due to a grave lack of male volunteers.

I dom't like it so much. Besides, couldn't America and other western countries concerned about a nutjob dictatorship gaining power remove the radicals from power? IIRC Israel's military does get a significant percentage of its funding from the USA, and I don't see how Israel could sustain an economy to support a military capable of holding off countries like the US when it closes off all international trade.
