Gay Weddings Legalized in....wait, Vietnam?

Postby Blasveck » Thu Nov 14, 2013 9:32 am

http://english.vietnamnet.vn/fms/societ ... etnam.html

In 2012, two weddings of a gay and a lesbian couple were held in the southern provinces of Kien Giang and Ca Mau.

The local authorities intervened and imposed a fine on them, given that the weddings were "contrary to the habits and customs of Vietnam" and the Law on Marriage & Family of Vietnam, which bans marriage between persons of the same sex

However, according to Decree No. 110/2013/ND-CP which took effect on November 12, marriage between people of the same sex has been rejected from the banned cases of marriage. It means that the organization of wedding parties between people of the same sex (without marriage registration) will not be illegal any more and they will not have to pay fine.

The gay couples will have the right to live together and organize weddings.

So, yeah, apparently gay weddings are now legal in Vietnam.
Note that this is not legal marriage. Not yet, I'm sure.

What say ye, NSG?

Hm. Rather unexpected. Good to hear though, nonetheless.

And what's sad is this is just going to come off as "proof" that gay marriage is a socialist/communist plot to the right wing.

After all, Vietnam = Ho Chi Minh to these folks.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

Well, Soviet communism taught us that homosexuality was something that only occurred in the decadent capitalistic world. Apparently it had something to do with bourgeois perversions and the corrupting influences of the higher class. However, it's more likely the Soviets, just as their fellow capitalistic/religious homophobes just pulled it out of their collective arses. The abstract concept of morality makes people say the stupidest things.

But to return to the original subject, it must be said that I'm pleasantly surprised with this development in Vietnam.

While, I suppose it's progress in Vietnam, simply not fining people for holding same-sex ceremonies without any legal benefit is hardly "being legalized"....

Congrats Vietnam.... you're now up to par with the most die-hard anti-SSM US states.

Civil rights. You know, those things you guys had a lot less of back when the Baltic region was firmly embraced by the loving arms of the Soviet Union.
