Situated in the north-west corner of Astyria, sharing borders with Nouvel Ecosse, The Aurora Confederacy is a large cultural nation, reknown for its stunning beauty in the northern highlands where the former capital of Valeria Port Aurora is located right down to the continental mainland which is home to the new capital, Lake Hai'lu'kai which takes its name from the lake that the city is adjacent to.




Government
The government of the Aurora Confederacy is officially classed as a democracy but unlike many western democracies there are no political parties in the traditional sence but there are political alliances that form over specific subjects and articles. Senators are elected every 4 years to the Civic Forum, here they stand as elected officials to smaller councils back in the wards to which they represent. Ministers are then taken out of the Civic Forum to take up their ministerial position to stand in their new position, usually forming a local bi-election as a minister within the government can not have a position in local government.

Within the government chamber, all matters are addressed to the speaker of the house who's job it is to keep order within the house during session when the house is sitting whilst all senators are addressed "The Honerable member for [Enter city here]" or the "honerable minister for [enter position here]" in the case of ministers. The government prides itself on accpuntability and openness with all debates and sitings in the house being broadcast. Thursdays during the questions to the president, the broadcast is not only live on TV but also broadcatst on two of the national radio stations to help give transparency of government.

On the third thursday of every month, the house is open to address by the public on a given subject, this may be a new law that is being proposed or on a matter such as new roads, the environment where a minister can be put to open account by the house and the public.



Law and Justice
The Aurora Confederacy prides itself in its law and order, a strong, yet even handed police force with a jury based justice system to provide fair and balanced trials for those who find themselves on the wrong end of the law. In 1990 the death penalty was abolished however sentences of whole life tarrifs are now handed down for what were previously capital crimes. For most crimes, the terms of imprisonment are as average for any nation however multiple crimes do not have concurrent sentences, instead sentences always run consecutively so if a person is sentenced for 3 burgularies with each having a term of 3 years for example, then that person can spend up to 9 years in prison.

For crimes that have a maximum term of not more than 12 months in a low security prison evidence is put to a judge where the decision is made, after which the accused is brought out in front of the judge where the sentence is given. these kind of crimes can get a fine, retribution order (where the accused has to do unpaid community work, for example removing illegal street-art off walls if the person has been caught spraying paint on walls), or a shirt stint in prison that lasts upto 12 months.

History
The recorded history of the Aurora Confederacy dates back to around the 1600s when settlers from the west landed on the island part of the nation in what is now South Sands, gradually this small settlement expanded as more settlers came to the country.

In the late 1700s coal was discovered in the area around what is now Longyearbyen and so mining began, initially with hand tools on shallow mines, the mining grew ever deeper and expanded further as technology in mining improved though mining coal in the 1700s and 1800s was a dangerous occupation, records show that in the 100 years between 1770 and 1870, 18,000 miners in the 100 years paid heavily through accidents including rock falls, explosions and floods.

1870 saw the first railways laid in the Aurora Confederacy, these iron roads proved to be vital in the expansion of trade and the revolution of industry in the nation. 1890 also saw electricity introduced at a domestic voltage of 110v, however it was chosen that Direct Current was the best method of power to use as it was easier to generate and allowed easier storage in early primitive batteries.

1912. Ten years into the 20th century a steamship sailing to Nikolia with 6,000 passengers on sank, of the 6,000 passengers and 2,000 crew, only 85 survived, this is put down to a lack of lifeboats and so revolutionised laws regarding safety at sea.

Through the inter-war period, Aurora Confederacy built up its merchant fleet, which during the second world war as the remained neutral for the most however Axis soldiers invaded from the north intent on invading, needless to say, the invasion did not go well for the Axis troops as the defencive forces and the climate put up a brutal and effective resistance, this put off the Invasion of the Aurora Confederacy for an indefinate period but also brought the Aurora Confederacy into the war on the side of the Allies in late 1942.

in the 1950s, much of the modern Auroran infrastructure was put in place with the new Terra Link tunnel being bored to get a highway to the old capital, this tunnel started in 1952 and was finished as an overal project in 1969 but gave high quality road access to various cities in the north. During the same period, Auroran Railways began to push a rail system that was to become a leader within its field.

Valkyie City Fire.
in 2000, Khayr Valkyr, (Valkyrie City or more correctly Valkyrie Settlement) was a sprawling city centered around a large arcology city of just over 10,000 people, there were no cars in the city but electric buggies and moving walkways to get around the city which was said to be the future of modern living when it was built in the 1960s, 17 floors high in the living area with shopping layers below with owners car garages on the outside.

in the early hours of the morning a fire broke out in the service area of the city and despite fire fighters best efforts it spread very quickly to the shopping concourses as most of the city was going about its morning activities. As the fire spread the structure which was made of light weigh aluminium and steel lattice began to soften and parts of the city began to collapse. As people ran, there became a crush at the train station as people began to rush forwards. 3 hours later the entire city was a raging inferno. One resident, identified as Zendra Yadava broke into the service ventilation tunnels which drew in air from the outside through a water curtain and went down to escape, there, the blast of air kept things cool as the fire drew in fresh air from these tunnels.

It took 4 weeks for the fire to burn itself out and the surface becoming cool enough to walk on. A search began and of the city of just over 10,000 people, only 3 survivors were found, the city had consumed EVERYTHING in the complex. With the building work underway to rebuild the complex in late 2001, Mount Sula'm'buru began to show signs of awakening after a long period of dormancy. in January 2002, the volcano erupted with enough violence to set off its neighbour, Mount Halvaar and send a pyroclastic flow into the heart of the devastated Valkyrie city.

In 2006 a new Valkyrie city arose, this time several kilometers away from the previous one and around a rocky outcrop from the original city so protected from any devastating pyroclastic flow that may come down from Mount Sula'm'buru which again showed signs of restlessness in late 2017.

The Confederate defence force is the organisation responsible for protecting the borders and territory of the Mercantile Federal Republic of the Aurora Confederacy. Organisationally this also encompases the civil police and fire services, listed as Civil Defence. As well as tasked with protecting borders, the Confederate Defence Force is also tasked with protecting the nations nuclear installations against intruder and attacks.

History
The Confederate Defence force dates back some 150 years, however due to the neutrality policy of the Aurora Confederacy, most of its operations have been based around keeping its borders safe and enforcing maritime laws in the territorial waters around the nation.

Organisation
The Auroran defence force is directly under control of the Chief of Defence, (gen. Anna Rasmussen), who in turn is a direct subordinate of the President of the nation in matters related to the military command. Apart from the general staff and the civil defence, including civil police, the primary arms are the Army, Navy and Airforce, with the secondary arms being mountain rescue and Nuclear Installation Protection Service.

The Army is divided up into 5 primary sectors, Northwest, North East, Central, South West and South East, these have the responsibility for all brigade level units and military jurisdictions. subordinated to the military jurisdictions there are 6 other subordinates assigned to recruitment, training and activating of reservists and planning and executing territorial defence of their areas. Military logistics for the Army is carried out by the Military Transport and Logistics Command.

The Navy consists of Headquarters, supporting elements and 3 maritime commands: Halvaar Bay, Fraserborough and Rai'La, These commands are responsible for recruitment, training and protection of soverign waters as well as enforcement of maritime laws and fisheries protection laws as well as search and rescue duties.

The Airforce consists of headquarters, supporting elements and 4 air commands: Valeria, Rai'Lal, South Sands, Hai'lu'kai. These commands are responsible for securing the integrity of national airspace during times of peace and conducting aerial warfare independently during times of crisis.

Though training is the responsibility of the defence forces, there is the Defence Training Organisation which helps to ensure that military reservists are kept up to skill with their abilities and operations, allowing the individual arms of the military to provide training to new recruits. Up-skilling of existing personnel is also the duty of the DTO which covers all branches of the military.

The Aurora Confederacy Self Defence Force Military ranks are based on the western rank system though on the military uniforms, only shoulder badges are applied to denote rank. Officer Student ranks however are hereby not applied to the uniform, for a soldier taking an officer course is still is existing rank until he or she passes the course to rank-up.

Civilian staff working on military bases as contractors hold honary ranks equvilent to senior lieutenant even though they have not been through military officer training. Chaplains however serve in the ranks of Chaplain, Senior Chaplain or Field Bishop depending on their position within the clergy. These ranks carry over regardless of the arm they serve within. They are equivilent to Captain, Lieutennant Colonel and Brigadier General

Border Protection
Border Protection duties are carried out by the Border Protection Force, their duties are passport control and customs searches as well as providing security at airports and sea ports. Typically they maintain the army rank structure. Their maritime arm is the coast guard, which until 1980 was a seperate force, tasked with primarily search and rescue, however in 1980 the Coast Guard was merged to become a sub-arm of the maritime self defence force

TRAINING: ARMY
Selection:
Due to the small size of the landborne defence forces, training is key to an effective military, this initially starts with an interview at the Military Careers office, or MCO, this is to assess the suitibility of candidates with regards to the role they have applied, for example a person who posesses more mechanical skills rather than out and out athletic ability will be trained as a mechanic or technican, rather than as an infantry person, however they still get the basic riflemans course.

Each applicant must undertake the following:
Urine sample to detect the presence of narcotic or stimulant,
sight and hearing test.
two 3km runs to be completed, the first in under 12minutes 30 seconds, then the second in 10 minutes or less, this is done on a treadmill set at an inclination of 3 degrees. Then follows a gym test: press-ups in 2 mins (min target: 60) with 2 mins rest, sit-ups in 2 mins (min target: 80) 2 mins rest, pull-ups as many as possible without letting go (min target: 6). There's also a bleep test and assault course.

Basic Training
The first weeks of training are spent learning basic skills that will be used in their military career This includes much time spent on the parade ground and on the rifle ranges, including night time rifle training. The long history of the Army and its role is highlighted through a visit to the Army museum in Barentsburg, home of the Military Training unit. This stage emphasizes all-round physical strength, endurance and flexibility in order to develop the muscles necessary to carry the heavy equipment a soldier will use in an operational unit. Key milestones include a gym passout at week 9 (not carried out with fighting order), a battle swimming test, and learning to do a "regain" (i.e. climb back onto a rope suspended over a water tank). Most of these tests are completed wearing fighting order of 16 kg of Personal Load Carrying Equipment. Individual fieldcraft skills are also taught at this basic stage.

Because the Army is also closely linked in with the Maritime Self Defence force, tasked with such duties as infiltration and ship boarding, as well as rapid assault, a role similar to many commando units, with such key aspects including climbing and ropework, patrol and amphibious assault, and other maritime warfare operations.

Selection tests of the Army units include:
A 20 km speed march, carrying full fighting order, to be completed in a time of not more than 120 minutes;

A 10km Endurance course across rough tundra and woodland terrain near South Sands, which includes tunnels, pipes, wading pools, and an underwater culvert. The course ends with a four mile (6 km) run back to DTOHQ. Followed by a marksmanship test, where the recruit must hit 7 out of 10 shots at a 30m target simulating 200 m. To be completed in 80 minutes (71 minutes for Student Officers).

The Tarzan Assault Course. This is an assault course combined with an aerial confidence test. It starts with a zip wire and ends with a rope climb up a thirty foot near-vertical wall. It must be completed with full fighting order in 13 minutes, 12 minutes for officers. The Potential Officers Course also includes confidence tests from the Tarzan Assault Course, although not with equipment.

A 50-km march across upland moor, wearing full fighting order, and additional safety equipment carried by the recruit in a daysack. It must be completed in eight hours for recruits and seven hours for Royal Marine officers, who must also navigate the route themselves, rather than following a DS (a trained solder from the DTO) with the rest of a syndicate and carry their own equipment.

After the 50 km march, any who failed any of the tests may attempt to retake them up until the seven-day window expires. If a recruit fails two or more of the tests, however, it is unlikely that a chance to re-attempt them will be offered.

Should a candidate fail this course, there is however the option to take up a role in the dedicated services, such as vehicle technician, intelligence and signals technician, for the above training is for the basic infantryman. When the training new training program was being discussed, the Aurora Confederacy turned to the Royal Marines for inspiration, adapting British Royal Marine Commando training to suit the needs and requirements of the Auroran Military.

Structural organisation of the military
Civil Defence
yes, Police.
The Army units, as well as tasked with defending the soverign borders of the Aurora Confederacy are tasked with day to day law enforcement, however this is not to say that the Aurora Confederacy is some military junta, for the civil police, though part of the military in terms of administration, only shares the basic selection process with the rest of the army, everything else is trained specifically for the job of law enforcement.

The Civil Police is divided up into 12 regions, the largest region being the southern part of the country with the headquarters of that region situated in Hai'lukai City. Each major city has at least one police central control building, with their radio communications remaining unique to each jurisdiction, however in times of crisis, such as a terrorist attack or natural disaster, some or all of the jurisdictions can be merged as required to provide overall cover, this also happens during large sporting events such as Soccer and Rugby-football tournaments.

Highway policing and railway policing fall under their own jurisdictions, however these two jurisdictions frequently coordinate with the citybased police jurisdictions.

Civil Nuclear Defence Agency.
The CNDA is the primary authority dedicated to the safety and security of the power infrastructure of the Aurora Confederacy, protecting the nuclear power plants by means of providing both gatehouse security and internal security with patrols walking the entire complex.

They take their role seriously and have full Arrest Powers under anti terrorist and civil security legislation laid down by the government of the Aurora Confederacy.

Border Patrol.
This part of the Civil Defence Agency are is the part that foreigners meet as they enter the Aurora Confederacy, for the Border patrol is tasked with the security of airports and sea ports, as well as providing the law enforcement arm of the Customs department, carrying out checks of bags, paperwork, making sure that illegal substances such as drugs are kept out of the country, they also have the job of interviewing potential illegal immigrants and other border violators.

Their customs role also includes the searching of containers offloaded from ships as well as the ships themselves, searching for illegal imigrants and enforcing Auroran laws and passport controls.

Crossing into the Aurora Confederacy at the various land borders, the Border Patrol Agency also checks citizens and vehicles entering the nation at the various land points, though mostly this is just a search with sniffer dogs and a customary passport and visa check (Non-Astyrian citizens require visas to enter the Aurora Confederacy). Aerial enforcement of border security is also the duty of the BPO, ensuring that illigal immigrants do not come ashore or across the border.

Coastal Command is tasked with patrolling the seas, searching for maritime law violators and mariners in distress as its primary operational roles, however frequently coordinates with the MSDF with regards to law enforcement as well as search and rescue.

Though the Aurora Confederacy has just 2 civilian airports, there are around 40 military airbases, Coastal Command operates from Valeria Port Aurora Airbase, covering the north, Rai'Lal, covering the South-East of the main island territory, including the Rai'Lal straits, White Cross and Enderby, covering the West coast, with the west of the country covered from White Rock and Mi'aza. Protection of the coast off the sourthern territory is undertaken from New Heysham, as well as some overlap from Rai'Lal.

Currency
The currency of the Aurora Confederacy is the Northern Dinar, historically, the Northern Dinar has been trading at around 1.2 NSD to the Dinar with occasional fluctuations. During the 1980s and 1990s the Northern Dinar was trading at a value of 2NSD to the Dinar with the highest ever record being in 1995 when the currency was worth 2.5NSD. Gradually over the 2000s the currency slowly slipped backed to its historical norm of 1.2NSD to the Dinar.

Notes are generally red with black text, fronted with an eagle spreading its wings with the denomination in the bottom corners, written in numeric on the right, and in letters on the left. On the reverse face the notes have a historical figure on the left side and the denominatoin on the right, with "Mercantile Federal Bank" written across the top. Banknotes are issued by the Mercantile Federal Bank whilst coins are struck by the federal mint and are generally silver with 1 and 2 Dinar coins being bimetalic, gold wrapping silver for the 2 Dinar coin, silver wrapping gold fore the 1 Dinar coin

5ND, 10ND 20ND and 50ND notes are in general circulation although 100 and 1000ND notes do exist but they are rare with less than 100 notes of the 1000ND denomination and around 500 of the 100 Dinar notes in circulation, generally they are in the hands of banks and collectors.

As technology advances, the currency also advances, with electronic transactions becoming ever more common in urban areas, however in rural areas where an internet signal is not reliable, many transactions are made using traditional cash.



Capital City
Lake Hai'lu'kai became the new capital city on January first 2014 as its southerly location compared to Valeria Port Aurora meant that it was less economically affected by the harsh winter storms that can form in the northern lattitudes. With a population of over a million people, it is by far the biggest city in the entire Aurora Confederacy, yet despite this, its intelligent grid-layout means that the city is easy to get around thanks to an efficient public transport system which is fully integrated with road, light surface rail, subway and commuter rail systems all using a standard ticketing system, the main rail hub for Astyrail is in the centre of the city.

At night, Lake Hai'lu'kai comes alive with neon signs with some of the tallest buildings having neon corner accenting as well as large illuminated advertisment hoardings, and no matter what time of day or night, the city is always a hive of activity, even the law courts have adapted to the 24 hour lifestyle of the city.

The lake itself was once peak at the western end of large now extinct volcanic complex that erupted some 16 million years ago, this eruption was one of many in pre historic times however the last eruption blasted the top off the mountain and sunk the creater to a depth of 500m in the centre, this crater over the next few millenia gradually filled up with water. This water is so fresh and clear that you can actually drink water directly out of the lake with no adverse efects, because of this clarity it is used to feed the water supply for the city of Lake Hai'lu'kai. After this, a smaller cone began to grow to the east of the lake, this formed the mountain that was eventually to explode again in a massive latteral blast that would then form the shelf that the city now sits on.

After another 500,000 years, give or take a few thousand years, there was another large eruption, this dramatic eruption sent the mountain into the lake and formed the large mountain surrounded bowl that Lake Hai'lu'kai sits on, that was 15 and a half million years ago, then gradually as the tectonic plate moved away from the geothermal plume that was driving the volcanic activity, the ground became more stable over geologic time.

When entering the country, either by sea or across through one of the two border crossings, driving is to be done on the right like continental Europe, though the actual side the steering wheel is on does not matter. Vehicles must have a current certificate of roadworthiness and must be presentable at all times on request of a patrol officer from the police or DoT along with proof of insurance. Vehicles that are due to stay in the Aurora Confederacy for a constant period of longer than 90 days must be registered within the country, this however also extends to diplomatic vehicles. Regardless of nation of origin, diplomatic vehicles are also subject to the same road traffic laws as all other drivers and so diplomatic drivers are still subject to the road traffic laws herein the Aurora Confederacy.

Terralinks are the nations express routes, similar to Autobahn and Interstate roads in other countries and can be found in areas of the country south of the arctic circle. these are remarkably accident free due to the constant patrol of police and watchful eyes of the SPECS cameras which watch the average speed of motorists as they go down the tunnels. In the case of a breakdown, once the system has located you, (be it by the ANPR based system in use by the CCTV or the SPECS or by the fact the you have picked up an emergency phone), the lane adjacent to the hard shoulder you are sat on is closed, so 200m down from you, a lane sign will show up [X], traffic across the lanes is then reduced in speed past your car. A police cruiser will be sent to you, along with the Terralink recovery service (or your own breakdown recovery service if in an organisation like the ADAC).

In the event of a crash, or other major highway incident requiring closure of a tunnel portal traffic is marshalled off, first off 20km from incident, lane 1 is marshalled off, then Lane2 is marshalled off 15km from incident, with lane 3 marshalled off 10km from incident, allowing a 5km free work space for emergency services.

Roads in the the north of the Aurora Confederacy are on the whole 2 lane roads with one lane for each direction and mainly un divided highway with a maxumum posted speed limit of 80km/h, these roads in the extreme north are also generally unpaved and instead surfaced with gravel and crushed stone. As such a lot of Auroran vehicles that drive up in the north have screen mesh covering the lower 1/4 of the windscreen to prevent stone damage.

Licence plates

Many countries within the region that the Aurora Confederacy resides require 2 licence plates, however the Aurora Confederacy is a one plate state, requiring only 1 licence plate to be displayed on a vehicle, (usually on the rear), although when you purchase a vehicle you can however choose to have a front licence plate although it is not compulsory to have one.

Licence classifications

R= Motorcycles, ATV Quads and trikes
any motorcycle over 125cc and quadricycles with an open cabin R1= Restricted licence. upto 125cc for 12 months after passing initial motorcycle licence if applicant is under 21 years of age

C= Car.
Vehicles with 4 wheels and an enclosed cabin with a gross permitted mass not more than 3500kg

CC = Car Combination
Car and trailer with a maximum combined mass not exceeding 4,500kg

LR= Light Rigid vehicle.
Vehicles over with not more than 2 axles and a gross permitted mass between 3,500kg and 7,500kg

MR= Medium Rigid Vehicle
Vehicles with not more than 2 axles and a gross permitted mass of between 7,500kg and 18,000kg

HR= Heavy Rigid vehicle
Vehicles with 2 or more axles and a gross permitted mass exceeding 18,000kg.

HC= Heavy Combination
Vehicles consisting of a prime mover and a SINGLE trailer with a gross combined weight of up to 44,000kg

MC= Multiple Combination
Vehicles consisting of more than one trailer with a gross permitted combination weight exceeding 18,000kg.
Such examples include:
A-Double - aka "Turnpike Double", "Road Train", "Rocky Mountain Double", with a prime mover, semi trailer and a full trailer behind, maximum length of 50m for 3 trailers.

B-double (B-Train) combinations consisting of two or more semi trailers

LB= light Bus-
Any vehicle dedicated to conveyance of passengers with upto 40 seats

MB = Medium bus
any vehicle dedicated to the conveyance of passengers with between 40 and 60 seats and a maximum length not exceeding 13.6m

HB = heavy bus
Any vehicle dedicated to the conveyance of passengers with more than 60 seats.

CB = Combination bus
Any vehicle dedicated to the conveyance of passengers that includes a trailer. This hereby includes articulated "Bendy" busses, as well as highway coaches with luggage trailers in tow.

Vehicle Exise Duty Disc (VEDD)

To drive in the Aurora Confederacy, duties and taxes must be paid, this however can be done in one of 3 ways, either by an annual disc, known simply as the VEDD, this can be brought for periods of 6 or 12 months, option 2 is the Go-Box pay as you drive system which can be pre-loaded or pay as you drive, where credit is put on the box and as you drive, credit is taken off the box. Option 3 is by cash payment at toll plazas on the Terra Link system.

Payment for VEDDs and GoBoxes can be made at service areas, fueling stations and at post offices across the Aurora Confederacy either with a credit or debit card or recognised fuel payment card. Once issued a VEDD does not have to be displayed as once payment has been made, the vehicle it is assigned to is logged on a national database where then ANPR cameras are able to pick up the registration plate and activate toll barriers accordingly.

Goboxes work in conjunction with ANPR and use radio frequency systems to communicate with the Vehicle Exise Duty Database, but are registered to a specific vehicle and can not be transferred from one vehicle to another. Generally they are placed on a windscreen or occasionally they are sometimes placed on the vehicle sunroof and are held onto the glass by a holder, allowing the go-box to slot into. Power for the GoBox comes from an in-built rechargable battery with USB recharging, with each one having a unique id number with the first 8 digits being the vehicle registration plate, then the following 12 digits being a unique serial number of the GoBox unit.





Public Transport in the Aurora Confederacy

Due to the small size of the population of the Aurora Confederacy, with the nation having a very large landmass, and with only 3 major airports, these being Lake Hai'lu'kai International, Peace Valley international and Valeria Port Aurora, the latter being right at the top of the nation, a few hundred kilometers above the arctic circle, with Peace Valley being just below the arctic circle, this leaves just 2 options for the transportation of people, Long distance coach or train. Originally the Auroran rail Authority chose a broad gauge gauge layout, but moved to standard gauge in 1948, the only exception to the standard gauge being Khayr Var which uses Cape gauge of 1067mm due to the terrain and the new airport link around Lake Hai'lu'kai which runs from LHK international to Helskja on the coast where passengers can either switch to a standard gauge train or catch a ferry to cross the Rai'lal straits.

As the network grew, and speeds on the lines increased, the initial service was provided by European style high speed trains similar to the TGV, this provided a measure of comfort and speed for passengers but the government wanted to go one stage further, to show off our capability as a nation so the transport minister went to Japan to study the Shinkansen system After trials, a new route was created going from the then capital of Valeria Port Aurora, to Rai'lal, then once the bridge was completed in the 1980s, on to Lake Hai'lu'kai which up until 2014 was just a vibrant tourist resort before becoming the new national capital. With the line completed, running on 2 of the 6 track group that was built to that route, this being 2 tracks for slow trains such as freight and frequent stop passenger trains, 2 for inter-regional high speed trains such as the IC-X and TGV services with 2 for the new Shinkansen lines which were added to the system in the 1970s.

The new Shinkansen lines dramatically shrunk journey times for passengers as unlike the older network used the regular DC power system, the Shinkansen lines used new AC line technology as the electricity in the Aurora Confederacy is mostly DC with a new AC super-grid being constructed and due for completion around 2019 after which AC will be phased in for domestic power. This AC rail power means there is no direct crossing of tracks with the Shinkansen network and the regular network, instead when a Shinkansen route crosses a regular route it is by a fly-over bridge which takes the track onto an elevated level and crosses over before returning to level, and to prevent interaction with road traffic the entire Shinkansen route when it crosses a road either goes over it or under it with no level crossings, this totally isolates the system from vehicle traffic.

In the cities, public transport is generally passenger busses, these are all modern vehicles with disabled persons access capability and so are designed with low floor entrances, Around Lake Hai'lu'kai the passenger bus fleet is made up of modern electric trolley buses rather than diesel fueled vehicles in order to help keep the city air clean, making Lake Hai'lu'kai one of the worlds cleanest capital cities as only the latest Euro5 and Euro6 commercial vehicles are permitted to enter and cars have to apply for permits to enter if they are over 10 years old.

Lake Hai'lu'kai, Barentsburg and South Sands also have a high frequency city mass transit rail system, these being the Hai'lu'kai Halo, the Barentsburg and Fjordland Tramway, aka "the bone" as when its viewed on a map it resembles a bone you would give to a pet dog. This tram line was built with heavy rail track as opposed to lighter tramway track as it was also built to serve the nuclear power station in the south of the city so as well as the regular electric trams that carry passengers daily it is also common to see nuclear fuel trains on the route, The Barentsburg bone is also free to ride. South Sands Urban Metro is also the most extensive with 150km of track on 10 different routes, as the city of South Sands also has a large industrial complex, nuclear power plant and dockyard which served by the tramway.




The Aurora Confederacy uses a 110v Direct Current domestic electricity system with a high voltage 500,000v supergrid to transmit electricity over the vast distances of the territory, much of it being vast empty plains. To generate electricity, the Aurora Confederacy uses mainly nuclear power with several Magnox type power stations and several Advanced Gas Cooled reactor stations. Up until the mid 2000s, there was also an active RBMK type station with 2 reactors on station, this plant is now off line and being decomissioned.

In the city of Barentsburg, located in the far north of the country close to the old capital city of Valeria Port Aurora, which was replaced by Lake Hai'lu'kai in 2015, a new power plant has gone on stream, replacing one of the first Magnox stations. This new station is a water-cooled design and is capable of producing 20% of the national energy requirements and takes its cooling water from the bay.

Located in Longyearbyen is the nations only coal fired power station which produces 3.7Mw of power through 5 turbo generators although this station is due to shut down by the end of 2019 to begin a changeover to bio-fuel, burning recycled wood pulp and biomass rather than coal, helping the Aurora Confederacy meet its carbon commitments.

Close to the Helskja crossing that goes between Helskja and Rai'lal, there is the Rai'lal narrows hydro plant, this plant is one of a handful of tidal plants that operate around the world and uses the strong tidal flow that rushes through the narrow strait to drive turbines. The turbines of this site are built into the bridge and provide additional power for the rail grid which used 1.5kv (15,000v) direct current overhead power and 750v direct current third rail for electric trains and are located 3m below the point of the lowest tide, thereby ensuring constant generating capability.

Communications
The Aurora Confederacy with its vast empty wilderness poses special problems for communications, as such there is very little in the way of cellular phone coverage outside major cities. within the cities there is excellent coverage for cellular phone systems and geographic phone systems as well as broadband, though outside the cities, the best means of communication is satellite telephone or two-way radio system with many cars sporting large antennas for UHF radio communications.

Aurora Confederacy's railway system however supports a wifi system and cellular phones thanks to repeater beacons alongside the track and infrastructure, though coverage fades away around 1 kilometer away from the beacons.



Economy of the Aurora Confederacy
Dominated by heavy manufacturing and export of such products that result and export of fish, the Auroran economy is one of the most powerful in the Aurora confederacy with the situation arising that the economy is actually in a state of surplus rather than deficit, meaning that more produce leaves the nation that comes to the nation.

The main export sector is primarily automotive industry related as well as aerospace and rail, however energy is also an exported comodity thanks to the oil fields located in the southern part of the island. Key corporations that are involved within the Aurora Confederacy are:

Climate
The Auroran climate is very wide ranging, from a high alpine climate towards the east of the nation where tall mountains push coastal winds upwards resulting in frequent rainfall, to a temperate climate on the mainland and southern half of the island, with the north of the island going to arctic tundra beyond Peace Valley which is just south of the arctic circle.

The wide range of climate areas is in many ways similar to continental Europe with the area around Lake Hai'lu'kai being very much like Switzerland with warm summers and cool winters with temperatures ranging from 15c to 25c in summer, and -2c to -8c in the winter, this makes the growing of food relatively easy compared to the far north where the average summer temperature is around 5c, whilst winters can be dark with the extreme north, covering Barentsburg and Valeria Port Aurora being devoid of sunlight from the end of October until around mid February. This results in recorded lows of -20c
