The Mount, Mnewer

Background

The capital city of Lord Atum is located upon one of the eldest and most centrally located worlds claimed by the goa’uld. Very geologically stable, Mnewer’s terrain, like many worlds, varies depending on region. The capital is located where the spine of the Lopnan highlands reach the sea. These low mountains are very stable, and the area where The Mount is located is in a sizeable crater. Mnewer was once extremely active, geologically, and has immense supplies of gems and minerals, until a few million years ago, rich but barren of life.

Lord Atum created the city’s crater four thousand years ago, by redirecting a comet larger than a modern mother-ship toward the site. This did damage equivalent to sixty thousand megatons, blasting a crater in a valley at the tip of the mountain range twelve kilometres in diameter, and six hundred meters deep.

This area was then a massive lake, with a central island. Rivers were then redirected to fill the area with sediment, and over a thousand years, the area inside the crater was reclaimed with fertile soils. Human and Unas immigrants were then brought to Mnewer, via the planet’s stargate. Initially, this settlement was a thriving river-side settlement that farmed the rich flood-plain soil of the valley, and lived around the central peak of the crater. The peak itself was used and still is, as a landing pedestal for Atum’s personal mother-ship, and he spent much time there. From a few thousand inhabitants, the planet grew over several thousand years of being the Lord’s retreat from the cares of the galaxy, to boast a population of hundreds of millions.

The planet was a location where Atum tested his ideas of breeding, social construction, religious integration, and many other factors. For this reason, he elected to introduce the Unas population to the city, and form them into the same community as the humans. This has proven successful, though they are a minority, they have been responsible for much of the construction work in and near the city.

The crater of The Mount, is now completely urbanised, and has changed considerably. The low mountains around it have variously been smoothed off at their peaks, or had pyramids erected upon them, to serve as landing sites for an entire fleet, and within the crater itself are several kilometre-wide mastaba landing platforms for modern ha’taks, as well as various pyramids for older vessels.

A dam has been constructed at inward end of the crater, though the river deposits less sediment now, and is intensively farmed upriver. Two more underground rivers are fed into systems of aqueducts and cisterns from the cliffs that form the edge of the crater, and supply the city’s freshwater, separate from the main river.

The city itself is a mix of many things. Its human population tends to dwell in the crater’s basin, in buildings of steel usually clad in limestone, quartz, jade, lapis lazuli, carnelian or obsidian from Menewer’s rich mineral resources. Unas dwellings in the city are often underground, making use of the race’s preferred environment. These tunnels are as richly decorated as the human buildings, but often share the characteristic hexagonal corridors and gold plated walls of goa’uld design.

Many goa’uld have townhouses in the city, attended to by servants or slaves, as well as this, senior ranking goa’uld such as myself have estates elsewhere upon Mnewer. My own consists fifty square kilometres of tropical forests, vineyards and orchards, around the equator, two thousand miles from The Mount.

Major Features

Palace of Annu

Taking up over a kilometre of frontage of the crater wall, and extending the same distance back on a plateau above the crater, the Palace of Annu was constructed last fifty years ago, after Atum brought the other goa’uld lords under his domain. It is easily the most impressive structure in the valley, towering half kilometre up into the sky from the base, capping off the three hundred meter cliffs of the crater wall. Much of it is built underground, and it includes enormous shield generators that protect it, and the city itself, from attack.

Notable features include the large areas of parks and gardens, often a site of pilgrimage, and a transporter-ring platform on an elaborately decorated column of reinforced metal, three hundred meters high, and extending through to the fused bedrock of the crater. This is connected by a slim bridge only big enough for two men to walk side by side, extending two hundred meters, and guarded at all times. This is the main route of access from other facilities within the valley and ships in orbit – internal ring transporters in the Palace of Annu are only accessible to Atum himself.

Great doors are the main route of access to the palace, too, after climbing its hanging gardens. Atum himself rarely uses these, except in the formal processional return to Annu after the New Year’s Festival (See The Temple of the Stone, below).

The palace is normally protected by squads of elite Kull Warriors and ten thousand soldiers of the Palace Guard - an elite legion of warriors primarily dedicated to its protection. Inside the palace is a sizeable complex of housing, laboratories, guardrooms for defence in detail, training areas, homes of taxation clerks, throne rooms, audience chambers, viewing balconies, custody suites, indoor gardens, aquifers, engineering chambers, kitchens, wine cellars, and countless other things.

The Temple of The Stone

The chief religious structure in the hundred worlds, and certainly the largest other than those on Shriash, the temple of The Stone is a T shaped structure almost a kilometre long, made of purest white limestone and marble, with vast windows. It is built at the delta of the city’s river, where it meets the sea, It can contain the entire population of The Mount, over a million people, upon its seats, and is usually home to an annual festival directed by Atum himself, rebroadcast to countless settlements and temples.

At normal times, it is home to thousands of priests and most of the city attends it every ten days. The focus of the structure is a circular lake, whose clear waters have substantial healing properties when drunk, able to cure anything up to and including lost limbs, if drunk repeatedly over the course of several months with a high protein diet. Inside this floats a sphere of blue lapis lazuli ‘petals’ that enclose a spherical black stone. This is said to be symbolic (though some pilgrims take it for the actual article) of the benben mound or lotus flower upon which Atum first sat and contemplated the ordering of the Universe. He commonly sits enthroned upon the exposed article on feast days, and this site is also used in several anointing rituals for his highest servants, which I have unfortunately, yet to experience.

The New Year festival most commonly attended is re-broadcast in many ways, including as a vast hologram above the crater of Mnewer; it is common for pilgrims to use transport networks to come to the city and the mountainsides near it, increasing the city’s total population to almost thirty million. Most goa’uld, including myself, opt to view the festival from yachts off-shore, as the main wall of the temple facing out to sea is opened during festivals, providing an excellent view from that direction as well.

The Central Peak

The central peak uplift of the crater forms a mound of solid rock one hundred and fifty meters high, which is set in a sizeable garden area and temple complex. This is frequently used as a base for Atum’s personal mothership. While he has since replaced that in general service, he still possesses the vessel he used to create the crater, and it is usually docked here, serving as a secondary palace. When he intends to remain resident on another world for any length of time, it is generally moved to a pyramid or suitable mountaintop there.

This uplift is often considered by pilgrims to be the mound upon which Atum created the universe, too, but this seems unlikely, though it is an echo of that primordial mound, given how long the God dwelt upon it in historical times.

The Stargate

All of our worlds are linked by a network of ring-like portals, one on each planet. Mnewer’s is usually stored in an underground complex, home to exploration efforts which use those portals to seek out new life and scientific discovery. However, this is not its only location. A courtyard in the palace, and a wide square in the city, are also equipped as sites for the gateway. It is teleported between these as necessary, when public access (usually scheduled transport from major worlds such as Edfu and Shriash) is required. It is, at all times, heavily guarded and secured with energy shields.

Northside

Far be it for me to only provide information on the laudable aspects of the city. The northern side of the city’s basin is considerably deprived compared to the rest, and beyond housing the landing pedestals for motherships, it is also the main route through underground highways for commodities from the rest of the planet, and as such, has a commercial feel.

This area is home to any number of missions and efforts of the more prosperous to ease the overcrowding of its tenements, and frequently, those in the northside leave to head for other cities where much of Mnewer’s thriving industry takes place, due to the overcrowding and unemployment problems. Crime, however, is vigorously oppressed in all areas of the capital, and is a rarity compared to what I have seen of other nations.

On the regional map...

It's about half a centimetre above the second N in Greater Brittannia, in the north, and is the political and legal centre of this nation.

There is also a regional "Capitol" called Ithrin Cove on the river delta in the south, which is more of a commercial hub and has a lot of the administrative infrastructure.

Nation: The Skybound Republic of Havensky
Capital City: Crystal City

Background:
The Skybound Republic Havensky is a post-modern nation that primarily resides in floating arcologies. Due to mass global warming, Havensky's ancestral home was constantly ravished by major storms and flooding. The solution was to develop structures that could float above the ocean. The Republic built five structures initially, each named after a precious metal or gem. (Silver City, Ruby City, Emerald City, Golden City, and Crystal City) The Crystal City was the largest and last to be built and serves as the capital.

The Havensky Republic is located above the Gulf of Texas as part of the Texas Region.

Image

Major Features:

The City is divided into three major towers. The East and West Towers are primarily residential areas with housing, restaurants, entertainment, schools, and shops arranged around the taller tower. The areas are designed to be like smaller neighborhoods in order to make life more comfortable.

The Primary Tower holds major governmental buildings as well as office buildings where most residents work. Below the tower is a large port that can hold numerous airships and other aircraft.

The towers are connected by a series of electrified trains so transportation around the cities takes mere minutes.

The current population of the Crystal City is 5 Million.

Visiting the Crystal City:

Residents of Texas may visit Havensky without a passport, but other nations will need to show a passport. Visitors are given a Havensky Visitors Pass when they first enter the country. This will allow access the Havensky's EVE computer AI system, which will be more than happy to provide directions and information to travelers.
