Hello and welcome to the headquarters of the progressive centre-left New Democratic Party (NDP). Formed out of a merger of two of the oldest parties in the Senate, the Liberal Democratic and Totally Rad Parties, this party is created upon a platform that includes our common values and enables members to vote freely on conflicting values.

Any and all well behaved NSG Senate members are welcome in this thread. Non-NDP senators may be asked to leave by the decision of one council member, while NDP senators may be asked to leave only with the consent of three councillors.

Whips

A one-line whip is an official request, requiring unanimous consent of active (defined as being online in the last 48 hours) council members, for all party members to vote in a certain manner. Breaking the party line leads to no disciplinary measures whatsoever.

Don't be afraid to show your NDP spirit! Help our cause by advertising the party in your forum signature (that you can access by clicking the User Control Panel link besides the View Your Posts one, then going to the Profile Tab, from where you can choose the sub-tab Edit Signature).

Our Platform

Economic Policy
The New Democrats are a centre-left party that believes in a free market, however subject to reasonable government restrictions and regulations. We support a bracketed, progressive income tax system, and oppose sales taxes for goods and services essential to everyday life, as it would put an unfair burden on the poor and needy.

Social Policy
The NDP supports a universal, single-payer healthcare system, and the rights of all Aurentines to bodily sovereignty. We recognise women's rights to terminate their pregnancies through a doctor-supervised process, and the rights of the terminally ill to a physician-assisted death with dignity. We support free and mandatory elementary and secondary schooling for the children of Aurentina, and also support either heavily-subsidised or free post-secondary education. We respect that Aurentina is a secular state, where religiously-motivated policies such as same-sex marriage prohibition have no place. We believe that, to keep the workforce productive, the state must offer unemployment benefits, job training, child-care, disability benefits and pension assistance to those who need these services.

Environmental Policy
We acknlowedge man-made climate change is a real and major threat to the world, and support both high-tech and traditional policies to diminish the causes and impacts of the phenomenon by implementing efficient technology, reducing pollution, and regulating polluting enterprises.

International Policy
The NDP supports globalisation, but believes that it must be beneficial to all parties involved. We support the cause of pan-Europeanism, and as such support membership in regional organisations, such as the European Union, Council of Europe and European Court of Human Rights, and in peaceful international organisations, such as the United Nations and INTERPOL. We also support space research and exploration through cooperation with our neighbours by joining the European Space Agency, and cooperating with other countries in order to further the cause of scientific research.

Defence Policy
The New Democrats are noninterventionist. We support a small, professional army geared towards defence and , seek to maintain Aurentina as a neutral power, and oppose the usage of conscription in any circumstance. We oppose any form of proliferation and production of nuclear weapons whatsoever and support the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Security Policy
We believe in a multicultural and tolerant Aurentina, and as such support relaxing immigration regulations, making it easier to apply for asylum from tyranny, and joining the Schengen Area. We oppose the repatriation of illegal immigrants back to their home countries, where they surely would continue to face sufferance and bad quality of life. We oppose torture in every form possible, as it is a tyrannic and unnecessary tool of corrupt despots and dictators. We believe in a well-funded and capable police force to tackle crime, and oppose any form of arbitrary and politically-motivated censorship. We hold the belief that the death penalty is an inefficient and archaic punishment that has no place in our modern and progressive society. Furthermore, we do not think crime can be stamped out using harsh punishments, but through reeducation to reintegrate convicts into society, so we oppose life sentences.
