I don't assume male. It's a crappy thing to do, particularly in an environment where by their own declaration most people are male.

It's crappy, because it requires anyone who objects to explicitly state their sex/gender. People should be free to do that, but they shouldn't be required to do it, to correct someone else's assumptions. It's better the assumption isn't made in the first place!

That's why I imagine all of you without balls until told otherwise.

I also try to use 'they' when I don't know the gender.

Don't spay me bro! :p

I do too, but I find it awkward. "They" can be singular, but to be so it relies on context and with the long sentences I'm prone to use I know my meaning is less clear when I use a third person pronoun which isn't unambiguously singular.

Yes, that's my point. Awards like Excellence in Debating may have slightly different meanings to different people without that being a problem, but a hugely ambiguous "award" isn't a good thing. If it's meant as a criticism by even some of the nominators, but is taken as reward (picking up the badge and wearing it with pride) then it's a perverse incentive to post in ways others especially don't respect.

I tend to be overly critical of anything which is posted in an OP though. Really I like this thread each time it comes around.

Ah. I see.

Do you also have a problem with the word "you"? I fail to see any inherent awkwardness with "they" being used for both singular and plural when "you" does the exact same thing.

Actually, I consider the use of "you" as singular as a form of courtesy. The proper second-person, singular pronoun in English is "thou (thine, thee)".
And the correct second-person plural pronoun should be "ye (yours, you)".

Only if you're talking about archaic English. Present-day English has totally abandoned "
"thou/thine/thee" and "ye", save only for the KJV of the Bible (and even then, its so damn awkward to read that most people need it interpreted for them).

Also, thanks everyone for the nominations. Heh. Didn't think you guys liked me that much.

You'd get some from me too, if I could nominate ten posters for Excellence in Debate.

That award will go to a poster who clearly win debates when they engage. It's the clearly-winning thing which gets the recognition. And maybe that's wrong, because there are dozens of posters who debate well on a range of subjects, debate even when their interlocutor is getting down in the gutter (or under the table), and steer a middle course between avoiding all conflict, and relishing conflict.

You just keep doing that, award or not. :)

Indeed, some like myself win clearly often enough to be respected to the point that nobody would debate with me on /pol/ anymore, but then the volume isn't particularly high enough to join the upper ranks as I tend to be a bit selective on what topics I will debate on. Others are good enough to hold their own, but never seem to clearly win debates. There are a handful who can do both win clearly and debate often enough to win such a title

It's very much a sliding scale. When you're 10, a 15 year old is "old." When you're 20, a 30 y.o. is "old".

I'm 49* and I like that I'm still considered middle aged by some. I'm not offended some call me old, or young (that happens too) because "old" is a term relative to expectations, and on this subject I can forgive people having expectations. Age is an intractable and unique distinction between individuals. We're all subject to time, and time is an inscrutable quality of the universe.

*yes, the last time I claimed an age it was 48. I haven't had a birthday since ... I just got my age wrong when I said that.
