The Thedosian military is the armed force tasked with defending not only the Republic’s territory and its citizenry, but also its interests abroad and any client states of the Republic. The commander in chief of the Thedosian military is the Esselda, who chooses the Secretary of Defense, who—in turn—chooses the members of the Chiefs of Staff Directive.
The Thedosian military, as a part of government, is organized and directed by the Department of Defense. This includes the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Navy. The Department of Defense is also in charge of the National Guard, despite this forming a part of the National Security Service. During peacetime, the National Security Service operates under the Department for Strategic Homeland Defense; during wartime, however, the Department of Defense assumes control of the NSS.
The Thedosian military operates in four different branches. The first is the Army, tasked with the defense of terrestrial interests of the Republic, be that the Homeland and overseas territories or its allies. The second is the Marine Corps, tasked with undertaking a variety of amphibious operations as well as being the initial and predominant force in aid operations. The third is the Navy, responsible for the maritime defense of the Republic, its territories, and its interests, in addition to undertaking various strike operations to support ground troops. The last is the Air Force, tasked with securing aerial superiority in the Republic and where its interests may lie as well as undertaking a variety of strike operations to assist ground forces. The headquarters of the Department of Defense is housed in the Lucrecia Defense Center in the capital city of Wyzim.
History
The origins of the Thedosian military can be traced as far back as the Elder Crusades in the mid-8th Century. The neighbors to the north of Thedosia undertook during that time a crusade against what they refer to as the Elder Continent, in an attempt to extinguish the land of the thedos, who they considered to be malicious in nature. The various kingdoms inhabiting the continent eventually united military forces in a successful attempt to repel the invaders.
Thedosian M09 Duvaineths, 1991
In 1937, with the invasion of Springacre by Kamitsure, the Republic military was again pitted against another force of great strength. The Grand Depression that had ravaged Thedosia for the previous decade had greatly impacted the defense budget; still, when news of the invasion spread to Thedosia, volunteers enlisted in the tens of thousands. Reinforcements were quickly landed on Springacre, and by 1940, Kamitsure had accepted defeat and began to retreat into a defensive posture. Between 1940 and 1943, the Thedosian Navy and its marines launched an ‘island-hopping campaign,’ in which they invaded various islands under the control of Kamitsure, and used them to stage attacks against their mainland. In late 1943, the Thedosian Military invaded the mainland, advancing forth; however, the determination of the Kamitsurese to defend their homeland was, though honorable, a rising problem for the Republic military. As such – with nuclear weapons at their disposal since 1943 – the Military deployed a weapon they named ‘Usurper,’ over the city of Nagashi, ending the war and occupying the country.
Thedosian troops, 2003
In the 21st Century, Thedosia has carried and finished its engagements in Azadistan and fought a ten-year conflict with the terrorist group Olmica, stationed deep within the various terrains of the country of Olmatur. The Republic military also had influence in many different conflicts, often deploying forces for the mere purpose of maintaining a presence in an area.
Budget & Personnel
The Ministry of Defense is considered one of the most important ministries in Thedosia, and as such, receives much attention from the Thedosian government and its budgetary affairs. In 2036, the Ministry of Defense received 5.04% of the GDP of Thedosia – an estimated 14% of the total budget. This is second only to Social Services, which received 5.15% of the GDP.
In terms of personnel, the Thedosian military operates a mandatory military training program. At the age of thirty, all Thedosian citizens must report to military training camps; the only ones exempt from this are those incapable or unfit for military service, and those attending university or higher education programs, whose training is postponed until their education is complete (at a maximum age of fifty). Though the exact length of combat training depends on the adeptness of the individual in question, the minimum for combat training is forty weeks. After training is complete, the soldiers are assigned to a unit and given instructions as to where they must report for one year of military service. However, these soldiers (referred to as Paladin in the citizenship tiers) cannot be deployed overseas except for in dire circumstances.
Additionally, the Republic maintains a volunteer force. Anyone who willingly joins the military before the age of thirty or remains with the military after mandatory service is completed is referred to as a Centurion in the citizenship tiers, and are the only forces capable of being shipped overseas regularly.
In January of 2037, the Thedosian Ministry of Defense released that it currently maintained 5,482,193 active military personnel, with an additional 112 million reserve personnel. The Republic Guard, the equivalent of the national guard in the Elder Republic, numbers 1,426,596.
Imperial Elder Command
The Republic military’s chain of command has its headquarters at the Imperial Elder Command in the Lucrecia Defense Center. It is also the headquarters of the Department of Defense. This building is where major military decisions are taken and where the National Security Council and the Chiefs of Staff Directive convene for their regular meetings. The current head of the Thedosian military is Imperatress Týril Sanustar, the chief of the CSD.
Though the Chiefs of Staff Directive does have overall control of the branches, it does not intervene in the actual movements of troops in a battlespace – each branch has its own administrative facilities, and as such, it is their duty to operate on their own battlefields. However, it has been known for each individual Chief to make recommendations to the respective high-ranking official of their branch, as the Chiefs of Staff are often the most experienced – and highest ranking – military officers in the Republic.
