How do pilots in your country view their planes?

Postby Wardie land » Fri Jun 14, 2013 11:41 am

In Wardie land it seems many pilots (especially military pilots) grow attachments to their planes, especially if they spend a lot of time with their plane, they begin to think their plane has individual characteristics and is unique to them, they give their planes pet names, which in many cases becomes the planes "name" and is the inspiration for the plane's nose art.

Many bomber and fighter pilots grow attached to their planes, in the same way a Cowboy can grow attached to his horse, I guess a war pilot's plane is what protects him, keeps him safe, and lets him contribute to the war. I guess many pilots grow attached to their planes after missions against the enemy, thrown into the midst of the enemy, a pilot's plane is what gets him back from enemy territory alive.

Planes are usually "feminine" (e.g. they are called "she", "her" etc), a pilot's plane is his girl, pilot and plane are like man and wife or father and daughter, they grow very attached, and many pilots feel quite sad if they lose their plane. A lot of pilots like to pat and talk to their planes.

How do your country's pilots view their planes?

As either tools or a source of fun. In our air force we have much more than aeroplanes. Many enlisted Auzkhians in the Luftwaffe are pegasi and they really value their wings.
Commercial airline pilots view their plane as their job.

Uramkorpers are in general highly attached to their technology, in part because the one with the best technology is usually considered to be the highest in rank. As such, Uramkorper pilots tend to be extremely attached to their planes. Uramkorper pilots often refuse to surrender their craft, preferring that if their vehicle will die so will they. This makes suicide attacks the preferred choice of heavily damaged aircraft.

A lot of our pilots form emotional attachments to their aircraft, naming them and customising them with their own decals and tallies (within regulations), and indeed aircraft are officially registered with their 'name' by Air force Command.
For example, F/JS45 'Old Crow' 8602'

Drone pilots however view their craft as tools of war, as most drone pilots will never see their craft up close, and operate from within secured air force bases many kilometres away from the battlefront.

Aviation is a valued part of Ieperitic culture, civilian and military. The aircraft themselves are rarely grown attached to in the military, though the designs of the craft are well loved and admired as triumphs of human ingenuity. Pilot is one of the most coveted jobs in the nation, with most commercial and delivery pilots retired entrepreneurs and highly ranked soldiers who are payed little money. This has resulted in a 'trope' in our media, where protagonists often receive life changing advice from the old, fatherly pilots on their commercial flights, who later reveal themselves to be millionaires.

In most airline businesses, pilots may grow a bit attached to their aircraft, yes. They often have to fly other plans, however, as the jets are kept on a rotational cycle that involves half of the fleet being serviced and maintained while the other half are in operation.

indeed much like Wardie land, if you fly a plane you can get attached to her obviously, but drones you control from miles away offer little in the way of attachment, infact i and the people of Wardie land dont even consider them true "planes"

All pilots are uploaded onto their planes when they are needed. Thus, they view their planes as second bodies. To them, their planes are one part of a whole. They are an extension of the pilot's will, as is their born-in body. They have an odd habit of referring to their planes in the first person and may become detached from their normal shell.

Most of the pilot officers within the ranks of the National Revolutionary Air Forces view their craft as an extension of themselves, and have a great attraction to it.

The idea of "piloting" a plane as though it's a separate entity from us is unfathomable to most of us. If a plane submitted to THAT, we would view it as a worthless slave, a mindless pile of junk, or both.

Our bodies transform into planes, so we ARE "our planes" in a very literal sense. Plane mode is seen as no different from robot mode when it comes to this - it's another physical aspect of ourselves. Therefore, we have more of an attachment to them than most pilots do to mindless planes - but since we can mind-transfer to new ones, our level of attachment is a bit less than that a human usually feels for his/her own body.

Civilian pilots view the planes as something to blame, should they crash for some reason

Pilots view their planes as very durable, absurdly fast, and incredibly useful. They also view them as completely expendable, thanks to our post-scarcity economy.

Generally they're just viewed as tools, though it's not unknown for a pilot to become a little bit attached to a plane and maybe give it an affectionate name or something.

Aircraft are viewed as an extension of the nation, and as a result most pilots would be proud of operating their aircraft. Many would continue in their role even till death. There have been numerous reports that during a conflict, Rombergian pilots low on fuel or munitions would ram their aircraft into enemy targets instead of returning home to resupply, if the situation would not favour the return.

In the Regia Aeronautica, a pilot views his plane as a friend, a companion. They usually give their planes feminine names, and some pilots like to decorate their planes with pictures of lovers, girls they know, or other decals. Others spend their time tinkering with the plane's insides to improve or modify it. Others like to think of them as pieces of art, and strive to become the best pilots they can be. It isn't uncommon for pilots to put Kill Marks, or markers on their planes as a sort of trophy. This has created competition in the ranks, where pilots try to beat each others' "scores".

Pilots have been known to become attached to their planes.
