History:
1944: US soldiers from a sunken ship land on a large, deserted island. They survive for two months before being picked up. Meanwhile, an amatuer cartographer from the crew maps the island.
1969: People from multiple Pacific Islands form the Free Islands Group, in order to find land to start an ideal country that is "from the people, for the people." The leader, a retired US Navy officer from the 1944 shipwreck, who had moved to the the Solomon Islands after WWII, researched the islands and discovered that they were not claimed by any country. After the group raised 1 million dollars, they purchased ships, supplies, and building materials, and set off for the islands.
1970: The settlers arrive. Some explore surrounding islands, some construct the new capital of New Pacific City, and others start forming the new government.
1976: Population hits 1 million.
1981: Population hits 10 million.
1985: New port constructed.
1989: Refugees from around the world start to arrive in large groups. Population triples from 25 million to 75 million.
1999: Population hits the 100 million mark.
2010: New Pacific International Airport is built, allowing jets to land with the nation's first paved runway.
