domestic newswire thread: http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=235569 <---- see this for playoff results

Allinlian Baseball League! (ABL)

this season marks a new direction for the ABL as the expansion into Strawbee and the addition of 2 new teams (The Peerson Warlords and The Kanaassa Legends) bringing the league total up to 32, the owners have voted to split the league into 2 leagues of 4 divisions of 4 teams each instead of the old system which resulted in 2 divisions having an extra team. The new division format is more friendly to geographic proximity and the new TV deals which were signed in the offseason

An extra playoff spot will also be added, meaning that in each league all 4 division winners + 2 wildcard teams will advance to the postseason. In BCCC action the Allinlian teams mounted another mediocre campaign but it was enough to net the Allinlian Baseball League the 12th rank in the international competitve standings

Last season saw another surprise champion as the Fonzona Giants surged to the league's best regular season record and then proved it was no fluke by taking the championship. Now the slate is wipped clean for everyone and all 32 teams are eager to compete for this year's emperor's series crown and represent their league in the BCCC

from the journals of Gareth Amatchi--an epilogue, of sorts

Well, after the Classic and all that (we beat Les Royales in the first semifinal game, then tied it up, and--well, you all know what happened, you read the last couple chapters) there was one more domestic season to complete. It was a struggle to watch the Bears slump as much as they did, and yes, once or twice I did think of skipping to the "retirement" part, but in a certain sense they actually did need me. At any rate, the Northeast was back to being close in a different sort of way. One race to the top, one race to the bottom (which we edged out. Sorry, Red-Tails. At least Comrade Danny didn't take it too hard. I really hope he doesn't become one of those super-involved people who just goes from sports to politics, boom boom boom, Zwangzug usually doesn't work like that but you can't be too careful)...

It was the Aurora edging out their rivals to win the thing, with Matt Jackson from the Equestrian States (what a name for a country, seriously) helping out. And his fellow corner infielder, Steven Wilson, was doing the same thing for the Millers, who had to fend off both the Wildcats and the Tigers.

But mostly the Wildcats, who had the better head-to-head record, because that's how tiebreakers work, they supposedly break ties. Elsewhere, the defending champions got 62 wins again, Polzin obviously knows what he's doing. And then, there were--imperfect tense--an imperfect but supremely entertaining Elefants team, making their way to the top of the Central. Charlie obviously understands Aminda someone has to, Brian can hit to both sides of the field, and slowly they came together.

And then it was time for the playoffs. Well, time for seeding, seeing as how there was a tie for best record. And a tie for worst record. The Elefants' head-to-head record sent them over the Millers, but the Aurora and the Dragons were tied even there. So people tried to look at intradivisional record. And that still didn't help. Or maybe it was supposed to but nobody knew how to count. We could have tried to do like countbacks, but that doesn't work, because no one knows when the games are being played for some reason. Anyway, at that point someone threw up their hands and were like "fine, whatever, 'run differential' is now a thing, seeing as how the Dragons' is a nice round 100 and nobody else's is past fifty." (That was the Millers, actually, the Aurora were only 27. Ours, for the record, was still better than the Panthers. And Worms and Flash. So we keep it close...sometimes. Or just win blowouts whenever we win at all)

Anyway. The Millers' nice statistics turned out not to help them, as they won their first game but then lost the next three. The Elefants lost their first two and almost got swept, but came back in the bottom of the ninth to tie game three and force five more innings before they went ahead and won 14-12. Surreal, and amazing. Aminda said she was ready to pitch the fifteenth because, after all, playing for the Zebras will teach you that kind of thing.

After that the momentum was on their side. They won game four, blew out five, and then jumped off to a 2-0 lead against the Dragons. Who would win the next game, after the series moved, but by then it was almost too late. Two more wins gave the Elefants the title, and soon after, Aminda had to fight back the tears as she announced her impending retirement.

It was all very emotional, and then the ownership announced that they'd done all they could with that title and, presumably in a homage to the infinite keyboards or whatever, would immediately become known as the Monkeys.

I love baseball.

I know the cutoff is tonight, but my internet is so terrible that I'm going to cut off when my internet is back properly. I hope it will not take more than a day, though. But be prepared for the worst

EDIT: it's more or less back now. Still, because I will have time to scorinate this on Thursday, I'm going to cut off on Wednesday. That means the cutoff is in exactly 24 hours and 15 minutes from this post.

It's also going to be the first time I'm postponing the cutoff

First round: All remaining 32 teams play
Second round: All remaining 16 teams play
Third round: All remaining 8 teams play

Final Venue Selection
The Selection Committee for the final site is made up of 13 members from the AIBC Boards of Trustees. The bid with the lowest number of votes per round will be removed and the next round of voting will take place. The winner of the final venue host is the stadium who wins the final round of voting, OR accumulates 50% + 1 of any individual round's vote before the final round.

The AIBC recieved one final venue bid from Allinlia's SilverFin Field in Tortuna.

Round 5
We welcome the players, staff and fans of Ile-Perrot Epee and the Fillydelphia Fillies to the SilverFin Field in Tortuna, Allinlia! The stadium was in consideration for last BCCC final, but unfortunately lost the bid. This year, they want to show what they are made of, and they have got the best two clubs of the year in baseball to create a show for them. Both seemed to have gotten here with ease, winning most of their series (if not all) 2-0. Surely this BCCC has seen a lot of 2-0 series... The Fillydelphia Fillies are back in the final after winning it last year, and losing it the year before. Ile-Perrot Epee is not a new team at this stage either, winning both BCCC's before the Fillies' victory in last season.

Ile-Perrot Epee (SCM) 2–3 Fillydelphia Fillies (KRD) (Epee 0-1 Fillies)

Fillydelphia Fillies (KRD) 3–4 Ile-Perrot Epee (SCM) (Epee 1-1 Fillies)

Ile-Perrot Epee (SCM) 1–4 Fillydelphia Fillies (KRD) (Epee 1-2 Fillies)

Fillydelphia Fillies (KRD) 1–9 Ile-Perrot Epee (SCM) (Epee 2-2 Fillies)

Ile-Perrot Epee (SCM) 0–1 Fillydelphia Fillies (KRD) (Epee 2-3 Fillies)

And with that, the Fillydelphia Fillies win the BCCC for the second time in a row, just like Ile-Perrot Epee did two seasons ago. Congratulations!

The Thirteenth Baseball Club Champions Cup

BCCC 14 entry details:
Every league is allowed to send four teams, multiassociational leagues (as of yet there are none) are allowed to send up to six teams, of which a maximum of four teams may be from the same league.
The deadline for the 14th BCCC will be 1-Aug-2013. Slightly late, but I will be on vacation until that time. That means I will also not be able to give you a cutoff warning until one day before the deadline.

Host bids will follow the same criteria as last season: entry must at least have a stadium name, capacity, and city. The Finals venue will be determined via a knockout vote style. Last place stadium in the round is dropped out, and at any time a stadium gets more than half of the votes, all voting ends and that stadium is determined to be the host. If no host bids are received, the Finals will take place at the National Stadium in Sraltlur, Ko-oren. This also opens the host bid for the final of the 14th BCCC: you may submit your host bid along with your entry details, the deadline of which will also be 1-Aug-2013

Coefficients here they are, please don't mind dots and commas. Please TG me if anything is wrong.

Lastly, I would like your opinions on the following. This BCCC has seen a lot of 2-0 series, and in addition the teams that are ranked high generally got very far. Especially the teams at the top did exactly as their rankings would predict. There are a few things I'd like some feedback on:
- Lack of upsets. Do you feel the same, and if so, how do you think I could increase the number of upsets?
- Tournament size. Do you think it is too big or small? How do you think I could fix that, if you think there is a problem?
- Secondary tournament. Do you think we need a tournament like the Globe Cup in football?
- Participants. Do you think there should be more nations in this tournament? How do you think I could attract more nations?

This is also not a feeling I got from just this edition. I've had these ideas for a while, and I wanted to see if things kept going the way they were going.

the lack of upsets may be due to some leagues having the same teams qualify/win their championship over and over again and others (like mine) keep having different champions and teams that have built up ranks fail to qualify for multiple years in favor of new teams that haven't been earning points in the coefficients. I've seen the coefficents by teams for the first time and i was amazed how much my league's playoffs has sabotaged it's BCCC success compared to other leagues which are able to consistently put their past great teams in the BCCC again

this might be fixed by giving less points to individual teams and giving more to nations which could help close the large ranking gap, which should allow for more upsets

if i had my way, all points earned by all of a nations teams would be owned by the nation as a whole, with teams receiving a bonus depending on where their nations has placed them in qualification (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th)

Thank you for your quick response. Another thing that comes to mind is that we should maybe have degrading coefficients: currently, a team's coefficient is made up of the results of the past 4 BCCC's, with each tournament counting as much as the other, even if it was four tournaments ago.

About your ideas: I think it might be a good idea to have nation coefficients being more important than team coefficients. Actually, nation coefficients are part of a team's quality in scorination, in the form of a bonus (exactly like RP bonuses).

I can't deny it's been a bit frustrating for me. It seems like my top teams all do about equally well and get swept at almost predictable times.

I didn't realize that. I would definitely support some degradation at the back end.

At least, moving toward that direction. I like that individual teams have their own cachet, yet, it is definitely true that some of those top teams are being inflated by their league/nation. That does indicate that a change could be helpful, I think :)

All that being said, I wasn't moved to complain otherwise, I just thought it was a little on the depressing side of what I should expect from scorination.

I, for one, was shocked to find that rankings for older BCCCs didn't degrade (I noticed that about three cycles ago). That should definitely be a part, where the previous BCCC is worth its full amount, the one before that is worth half, the one before that is worth 1/3, and the fourth-cycle-back is worth 1/4. Or something like that. I think that'll solve a lot of the sweeping problems, by reducing the raw gaps in ranks.

When I created the ranking system, I modeled it after the UICA, where those ranks didn't degrade after time. Maybe in a competition with much less participation like this, such a degradation system would be more welcome, and look back on it now, would definitely help this event be more competitive.

For next BCCC, I'll introduce degrading coefficients. I'm tempted to go with Karditan's suggestion: 1/1 for the previous season, 1/2 for the season before that, then 1/3 and 1/4. I don't think I should change anything else because too much change at once might overshoot what we wanted to do.

I'm a fan of the degrading. Otherwise, where's the competition?

Also, I believe you should make a nation ranking like they do in the UICA.

I made a ranking based on degrading coefficients, with the previous season x1, two seasons ago x1/2, three seasons ago x1/3, and four seasons ago x1/4. Google docs wrecks it beyond repair, though. Is it an option if I upload it somewhere and give you the link here? (and does anyone know a decent site like that?)

you could just post the coefficients the regular way with the new values

if showing your work makes everything messed up than i'm sure we can just trust your system

I'll see what I can do. I'm on my laptop right now, so I don't have my files with me. Everything's on my pc, which doesn't have internet anymore. I'm sure everything will sort itself out though
