Under the Crimson Skies [OOC][Steampunk][Closed]

Postby East Vlaricstan » Fri May 31, 2013 11:11 pm

The year is 1890. The dawn of a new decade, and a new era for the world of Aerum. Great strides have been made in the field of science these last forty years, along with it, advances in the field of warfare. Huge steam-powered ships plied the oceans, whilst awe-inspiring airships cruise in the air. On land, bands of steel are laid out across entire empires for locomotives to travel on, carrying people, wares and ideas which will shape things to come. All this would not be possible, of not for two remarkable men.

Anthony Smith, a relatively unknown physicist, was working one stormy night in 1846. He believed that there was a clean, cheap source of energy, nothing like the dirty coal used in his time. He kept working, persevering until that night. The night he changed the world. He called the process cold fusion, generating energy that was safe, clean and easy to use. A fusion hotbox, when combined with a steam engine, could provide almost unlimited power. Power that would change the world forever.

Fast forward to 1868. Smith's fusion hotbox quickly became the most widespread source of energy in the world. Using electrical power generators, homes and business now had a much safer source of light. Machinery in factories were powered by this electricity, creating goods at a speed unmatched in any other time in history. One remarkable man, Jack Pendleton, when working in a gold mine, found an amazing substance. This substance, now known as pendium, had the remarkable ability to repel metals. He worked furiously to further refine this substance, eventually creating the worlds first Lift Reactor, which is the powerhouse of modern airships. Where flying machines once relied on helium and hydrogren to float, our airships rely on pendium to fly, although we still need large fans to increase or decrease altitude. He eventually discovers that this element can be created in fusion hotboxes, albeit in small amounts. His discovery changed the world.

Your role here is to lead your nation, either to victory or defeat, to prosperity or ruin. You will lead vast armadas of naval vessels, fleets of airships and armies made up of steam-powered tanks, well-armed infantry men and giant artillery guns. You will also be able do direct whether your nation produces weapons of war, trade items, or the bare necessities. The choice is yours, but no matter what will happen, this era will be known as that of great turmoil, perseverance and sacrifice. An era of conquerors and the conquered. This is the era of the airship.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome. As you may have noticed, this will be a Steampunk RP. This is the first rp that I started, and I apologize for any mistakes I make in the future. Some rules:
1. Listen to the OPs
2. No number-spamming and/or godmodding.
3. No trolling, flame baiting or any of that kind of shenanigans. If you wanna argue, don't do it here.
4. No one-liners. One paragraph per post is the minimum. Also use proper grammar and spelling.
5. If you're holding any type of negotiations, discuss it via telegram then just post the results afterwards.
6. If you want to introduce new tech, put it ask me or any of the OPs first. Of course, it'll be OOC, so we won't use it against you. You may do so via TG.
7. Passage of time is 4 IC days to 1 RL day. It may slow down or be sped up depending on events.

And the app:
You have 21 points to spend on the Military, Economy or Technology, with a maximum of 10 each. This will be as to prevent godmodding.

My app would be this:
Nation Name: East Vlaricstan
Nation Name (IC): The Federation of Aerugo
Head of State: Emperor Maxmillian Chekov
Population: 64,000,000
Military Size, active and reserves: 600,000 active, 900,000 reserves
Tech Level: 7
Military Level: 7
Economic Level: 7
Military technology and doctrine(what war machines you use): Each branch of our military's doctrine, along with their equipment, will be as follows:
Army - Uses massed firepower and steam tanks to break through enemy lines whilst infantry follows up. They use bolt-action rifles, Galting guns and howitzers. Our steam tanks, called Scythes, are armed with either a Gatling gun or a 37mm cannon. Powered by a small fusion hotbox. We also have Leviatan Artillery, which are huge 203mm guns used for breaking through heavy armor on airships or naval vessels, as well as for heavy firepower in assaults. Only 50 of these exist in the Federation.

Navy - Plays more of a support role to other branches, usually relegated to commerce protection and transport. Made up of 3 fleets of twenty vessels each, only the 1st Fleet is for combat, whilst the 2nd and 3rd fleets are for commerce raiding and transport, respectively. We have 4 main ship types, Battleships, Battlecruisers, Cruisers and Destroyers. Battleships are heavily armed and armored, these are the core of the fleets. Battlecruisers are fast battleships, used for commerce raiding. Cruisers are fast vessels meant to scout ahead of fleets, and destroyers are for use against airships, armed with cannons and Gatling guns, most of which a facing upwards.

Air Fleet - the main offensive weapon of our military, there are two air fleets in service. The 1st fleet is for combat, while the 2nd fleet is for assault transport. there are 4 airship types, the Air Battleship, Bombarder, Air Cruiser and Assault Carrier. Air Battleships and Air Cruisers are for use against other airships, while Bombarders are for use against ground forces. An Assault Carrier carries 16 transports which can carry either a Scythe, medium artillery gun or a platoon of soldiers. Used for transport or assaults.

Economy type(industrialized, agricultural or mixed): Industrialized
Land Claims(for when we get a map up): to follow
History: The Federation was formed in the aftermath of the Civil War from several cities that were left from a former nation. Under the rule of Emperor Firzal, he united a number of city-states that formed after the war and declared the Federation in 1873. Each former city-state got representation in the Federal Assembly, and in turn the larger city-states became more influential. The Federation almost broke up during the Kruzibal Crisis, wherein rebels took the capital. Eventually the rebels were imprisoned and executed, and the Federation continued to prosper.
RP Sample: link to follow

Nation Name: Federation of The Dijel
Nation Name (IC): UAAS (Union of Allied Alawemi States)
Head of State: King Hassan IV
Population: 96,000,000
Military Size, active and reserves: 800,000 active, 8,000,000 reserve
Tech Level: 4
Military Level: 8
Economic Level: 9
Military technology and doctrine:
Army- As the UAAS army is a patchwork of forces from various member nations the battlefield tactics employed differ, despite the fact that most production is pooled among the more indusrialised nations. Most of the land ships used are of a relitively light construction but well armed, making them perfect in hit-and-run or ambush battles which their commanders prefer to defeat more advanced opponents. Infantry and cavalry are mainly used in support or in close quarters combat; they wield various repeating firearms and explosives, but have no qualms about closing to finish the job with an astounding number of sharp blades and spears. In fact, some land ships have been outfitted with grappling hooks and carry an infantry unit spesifically to board and overrun enemy capital ships, sometimes turning their guns against their former masters.
Navy- The ships in the UAAS fleet are a ramshackle collection of hulks and former imperial naval vessels which have been 'acquired' one way or another, with just a few modern ship added in for good luck. Current strength is: 3 antiquated battleships, 5 repaired battlecruisers, 8 modern heavy cruisers, 18 destroyers of various quality and 42 frigates and gunboats. All operational ships are pooled together in a single main fleet, with the exception of the heavy cruisers, which operate semi-autonomously in two squadrons of four.
Air Force- Organisationally, UAAS does have an air force, but this is mainly an umbrella orgaisation responsable for maintaining air defences around both settlements and land forces (the navy has its own AAA ships). The main contribution the air force makes to the battlefield is the presence of land ships armed with anti-aircraft weapons, which are otherwise identicle to their army cousins. A small squadron of scout airships are avalable, but are armed only with crew weapons so cannot be relied upon in combat.
Economy: Mixed
Land Claims: Pending (Preferably any desert/savannah areas)
History: Originally formed as a pact between rebel leaders in occupied colonies belonging to foreign powers, the Union was confined to a handful of desert encampments and outposts for many years. Although they did not know it, this would benefit them in the future, as they learned the skills that their fledgling nation would one day use to stave off attackers, the skirmish and the raid, as well as leaving some of them with ex-imperial heavy-industry. As each of the disparate factions became free, they aided their neighbours in their struggle, founding the spirit of the Union that would ultimately bind them all together. Too late did the old empires realise the true nature of their opponents; they were not, as they believed, fighting bandits and petit warlords, but rather a united peoples with a pact of mutual support. Now, mere years after decolonisation, the Union has embraced new ideas and technologies to become a true world power; the edifice slavery has been cast down and a new order of freedom established.

Nation Name: Mauretania Tingitana
Nation Name (IC): Republic of Dalmace
Head of State: President Clinton Alderdice
Population: 100,000,000 (est.)
Military Size, active and reserves: 3 million active, 2 million in reserve
Tech Level: 6
Military Level: 5
Economic Level: 10
Military technology and doctrine(what war machines you use): Dalmace uses a rather standard armada of infantry, landships, tanks, artillery, bi/triplanes, airships, ironclad boats and submarines, etc. It's an average army in terms of size and technology, but has excellent organization and discipline
Economy type(industrialized, agricultural or mixed): Mixed
Land Claims(for when we get a map up): Pending
History: Set up as a colony of a great Old World power, Dalmace fought a successful revolution against its mother nation based on the ideals of personal liberty and democracy. They set up a new nation in the New World, a federal constitutional republic, with representative democracy. Dalmace is a mix of the old and the new. While its population and many of its customs are from the Old World, its ideas and new thoughts are forged in the New. Dalmace is known for is very lax trade/business laws, and Dalmacian coroprations are known throughout the world as global entities. Most of Dalmace's income is from private companies, not government actives. With plenty of space to be developed, the hostile Luddite tribes being pushed away or assimilated and freedom to essentially do what you please, so long as it doesn't infringe on others, Dalmace is an immigrant paradise. Just be sure not to expect any handouts.

To everyone who has applied so far, please provide at least one Rp sample, two are preferred. Also, if anyone knows how to make a map, please TG me. The map will be entirely new, so there'll be no Europe or Asia or Africa, but rather different continents and different topographies.

Nation Name: Mercatoria
Head of State: Archimandrite Alexander Kenning
Population: ~20 000 000
Military Size: ~300 000 Human Soldiers, ~600 000 Mechanical Soldiers, ~3 000 Steam-Tanks, ~1000 Airships (Variable)
Tech Level: ~10
Military Level: ~6
Economic Level: ~5
Military Tech/Doctrine: The focus of the Mercatoria's advanced technology goes into improving and maintaining the collection of airships that vary from civilian pleasure yachts and trader vessels to militaristic Dreadnoughts; all of which crowd the skies above the Mercatoria. Walkers Steam-Tanks and Mechanical Thralls are used to boost the otherwise small ground forces but the Mercatoria rarely attacks from the ground. Air superiority is the number one concern for the Mercatoria and they have virtually no Navy.
Economy Type: Heavily Industrialized
Land Claims: Top right island.
History: The Mercatoria is an entirely different world to the one you once knew; the ancient tiered city of Nasqueron which is based around three huge interconnected pillars of stone with the city both carved into and built upon the rock. Bridges, stairs, ladders, ramps and airships connect the city together from the Stone to the Sky; ending only in the large suspended platforms and clustered airships in the sky nearly two kilometers from the ground. The Mercatoria has always been a smaller nation compared to its more populous neighbors but it still maintains air superiority through numerous Dreadnoughts and advanced miltech.

Lower your numbers of Steam Tanks, they are relatively new, and I'll consider whether I'll allow mechanical soldiers.

Nation Name: The Empire of Pretantia
Nation Name (IC): The Grand Imperium of the Oni
Head of State: Prime Minister Hattaro Horozo/Shogun Goza Jirokan/Emperor Miyazaki
Population: 80,000,000
Military Size, active and reserves: 300,000 Samurai(Active), 4,000,000 Defense Corps(reserves), 500,000 naval retainers(navy and air force)
Tech Level: 7
Military Level: 8
Economic Level: 6
Military technology and doctrine(what war machines you use): The Oni Military Host (As its called) is a highly mobile force designed to engage the enemy in a strategy not unlike Soviet Deep Battle . Organized with maneuverability in mind, a force's main goal is to confound the enemy's intelligence, smash a hole in the lines where least expected, and seize the enemy support units.

The vanguard in total war is typically the samurai, while the defense corps serve as the sternguard responsible for holding the enemy in place while the vanguard uses its mobility to strike the enemy at its weakest point. However, in peacetime the samurai would serve as the sternguard while the elite forces are on vanguard.

The Naval Retainer Corps is an active force specializing in machinery, aviation, and naval activity. As such it serves the roles of engineering corps, air force, navy, and occasionally marines. The primary role of the Maritime branch is oceanic control and ground support. Naval vessels are classified as dreadnought(heavy), frigate(AA/scout), destroyer(ship-hunting/scout), and transport.

The Aerial branch is responsible for support and transport for samurai and defense corpsmen across the front, as well as providing a force multiplier in deep battle. Aerovessels are divided into cruiser(fast attack/AA), bomber(ATG), monitor(dual-role ATG/AA), and assault ship (transport). All aerovessels carry at least ten marines for deployment, with assault ships carrying a full platoon of samurai or corpsmen, an artillery battery, or a single O-Ryu as well.

The engineering branch is responsible for maintaining delicate or experimental equipment, as well as improving and inventing new materiel for the host in general.

Armored landships served the samurai with mixed results. Called Ōkina tetsu no Ryu, or O-Ryu for short, they are great linebreakers in one hand, but slow behemoths in the other. As such O-Ryu are now serving in the defense corps instead
Economy type(industrialized, agricultural or mixed): mixed
Land Claims(for when we get a map up): The southern continent
History: The Oni are an old empire, although not always so great. Having been in and out of isolationism for centuries, the Oni had not begun having agreat impact on the world until the 19th century, when foreign intervention resulted in the technological uplifting of the Oni. Since then the Oni has expanded, taking territories in neighboring areas and speading its influence in the international community.

I've lowered the number of Steam-Tanks and I'd like to vote that Mechanical Soldiers be allowed.

I vote against it. Powered-armor should be fine, but much later in the game.

Steam-powered Armor should be allowed, and the mechanical soldiers won't be overpowered.

Not at this juncture. While many fantastic things exist, robo-soldiers are a bit over the line. I don't mine power armor, but later in time.

1.) Robotics require electronics.
2.) Electronics go against the theme.
3.) If we have that level of tech, then why not have cell phones, rockets, and satellites?

I never said robots like modern robots, I meant cogs and gears powered by steam. Old fantasy, clunky robots.
