And she made a ton of good decisions. Most Star Fleet captains would not have worked with the Maquis.

Most Star Fleet Captains weren't but into situations that required them to do so. I have a hard time believing that Sisko, Piccard, or even Kirk wouldn't have worked with the Marquis had they been in her situation.

Then it'd be almost moot to rate the Captains at all in character strength, since each series dealt with something specific to their characters. Each one had a test: Picard's was the Borg, Sisko the role of Emissary and the Dominion War, and Janeway's was survival - no matter what was thrown at her and her crew (in my view, anyway). I personally can't rate them in character strength, they're all strong in their own right.

Then came Archer... and omg... what were they thinking? I almost hated Quantum Leap because of Bakula.

Having just finished DS9, I have the following thoughts.

I can't quite decide if Worf was better in TNG or DS9, although I think probably DS9.
I hate Ezri.

I hate what Kai Winn turned into in the last few episodes, and how she changed back at the last second as a result of something that wouldn't have changed her mind earlier on.
I hate what Dukat became. He should have just died before he went nuts, he was an absolutely horrendous villain after that.
I hate that Odo permanently joined the Link.
I somewhat dislike the fact that Sisko left Starfleet.

Overall pretty good. I didn't like most of the last three or four episodes, except the bits that focused on the war.

And finally, I'm sad because now I need to look for something else to watch.

Ezri was fucking annoying, Jadzia was way cooler. I was so pissed when she got killed by Pah-Wraith possessed Dukat. I personally think Worf was equally good in DS9 as he was in TNG, he's still my favorite character of the Star Trek universe.

I really wish they'd come out with another series taking place after the Dominion War.

Well, at least some of Voyager would have been set after the war, but I suppose that doesn't count since it was mentioned literally one time throughout the whole series.

I hated the fact that Worf's personal life is nothing but a tragedy. Parents - dead. Kehlyr - dead. Son - estranged (mostly). Jadzia - dead. Jadzia was the one positive influence in his life, and the duo had great chemistry. It's a damn shame they killed her off.

As for Ezri - I think they threw her in way too soon with very little personality and just sort of jumbled a mess for her to flesh out something barely tolerable.

Overall, I felt the series ended too quickly. There was a war going on, and it all seem to mesh quickly with very little thought behind how they would do it and how it was portrayed. So many venues could have been explored. Alas, can't have it all, DS9 will remain my favorite series, and TNG after it.

It was quite a bit subtle, I suppose, in that every character was supposed to be atheist:
"Roddenberry made it known to the writers of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation that religion and mystical thinking were not to be included, and that in Roddenberry's vision of Earth's future, everyone was an atheist and better for it."

Nice idea.... But I have three words to prove to ant Real treker that you're wrong. Bread And Circuses.

Star Trek TOS was never all Roddenberry. Gene Coon, DC Fontana, and many others made very strong contributions. Uhura is unabashedly Christian, Kirk advises Saavik that prayer would be in order for the Kobayashi Maru. And "Of all things A GOD must have compassion!" from Kirk. Doesn't sound atheist to me.

The first three seasons of TNG are much more representative of Roddenberry's views: Athiesm, Socialism, and the like. But Worf believes in Klingon Religion and iin later seasons even Federation crew are mentioned getting paid. Picard is probably the closest thing to an anti religion character in Star Trek. He professes respect for everyone's cultural values but has no problem equating religious belief with backwardness but after Roddenberry's control began to wane, Picard himself is shown to have just the tiniest religious foundation as he rebels at Q running the afterlife but NOT the idea of an afterlife itself.

DS9 is neck deep in religion. Discussions of what constitutes the separation of deity from merely highly advanced being but no absolute refuting of religion as a concept.

Haven't seen DS9, so to you absence of religion means non-existence of religion not that everyone is just Atheist?

I haven't seen Voyager, I remember him from First Contact though, others told me he contains knowledge of previous Starfleet medical officers from Phlox through Bones.

Yesterday I begrudgingly put away my complete collection of the original series on VHS
I also have most of the Mego action figures from the late 60's & a complete run of the original comic book from Gold Key, so yes I am and forever have been a Star Trek geek.

My favorite series was the original, & although I love Patrick Steward & his role in TNG, I like deep space 9 next best. I watched some of Voyager & thought it was OK, & could never get into Enterprise, but I didn't give it much of a chance.

My favorite movie in the series is Wrath of Khan, then I think Undiscovered Country.
