God-modding Defined: A Nationstates Guide

Postby Zernin » Sat Apr 13, 2013 4:14 am

Definition of Godmodding (or Godmoding)
In an online RP, Godmodding is the term used for those whom create a character that is, virtually, indestructible. This is frowned upon by other members of the RPG and is extremely annoying. This can also result in a possible (thread) ban.

Godmodding in general
Godmodding occurs when a player A describes an event, or a series of events he/she has taken against player B in the RP. The person who plays character B describes actions taken that completely nullify the original actions against them.
For example:
player A: "Joe strikes out at George firing a machine gun, launching a grenade at him and pulling down the walls around him."
player B: "Joe completely misses George as he dodges the bullets, picks up the grenade and throws it back and jumps away from the falling walls."
***SOMETHING had to hurt the character, even if he only got shot in the shoulder or piled on by the wall and emerged with a broken wrist.Taking no damage isn't -always- godmodding, sometimes it is simply ineffective, like in a FT setting where a med-power kinetic energy blast hits one of the most powerful energy absorbtion/kinetic absorbtion shields/plating, or small arms/non-armor penetrating bullets against a tank in pretty much -any- setting, though PMT/FT have a little leeway

Godmodding is used like a "Get Out of Jail Free card" when things don't go the way a player wants. Rather than working with previously unfolded events, a player will godmod to get things going their way. It is used to make a certain character invincible .

Godmodding can also refer to where character A describes the outcome of their own actions AGAINST another character. For example, character A states: "George lashes at Joe with his sword, creating a huge gash in his cheek."

Controlling characters that ARE NOT YOURS to begin with is also godmodding.

Godmodding during fight scenes
Godmodding is. most often, used during fight scenes. While it is hard to determine what another character will do, you must always leave the option open for them to dodge, duck, run, etc. You may not state your attack directly hit them and they fell down, or anything of that kind.

Godmodding and powerplaying/powergaming are, essentially, the same thing. In short, don't do it. It annoys other people and makes you look like a fool.

To clarify: godmodding might result in the thread starter booting you from the RP, however on NationStates it will not result in a forum ban.

Taking no damage isn't always godmodding. In this case it probably is, but even then it's a possible if flukey outcome and if it were an isolated incident I'd be disinclined to complain. In other cases there may be attacks that are just plain ineffective, like shooting at a tank with an assault rifle, it's not godmodding for the tank to take no meaningful damage from that.

Godmodding can also refer to where character A describes the outcome of their own actions AGAINST another character. For example, character A states: "George lashes at Joe with his sword, creating a huge gash in his cheek."
In my experience, this is the more common, clear-cut, and egregious version in free-form roleplaying, and probably warrants addressing first

One: That -is- what I meant, should have clarified, thank you for pointing that out(no, seriously, thanks, missed that part)

Two: Yes, that is true(Maybe I should force you to rewrite this and send it to me...I mean, err...help)

Three: Yes, this is the most common action, I agree

Thank you for the review!

Where?

Nothing uncovered in this, especially Euroslavia's.

I might be a bit exaggerating, of course. But it is.

Funny Zernin you write this when you have a string of cases of god modding yourself...

Like the time you claimed to have thousands of tanks with graviton cannons with a population of 7,000,000 and a combined GDP of 20,000,000.

Alright...well...all my work gone...thank you Euro-mod-person-with-red-name for making the NS Player's Resources helper-thingy-creator-person-what-ever lose their job in the god-modding department, and essentially get fired...I am NOT sure if this is an insult or compliment, but now they are going to post here with a snarky comment and make me cry, if I haven't already.*Cries.*

Tyran, as I have said before...I RP a FT empire, a large one that controls a galaxy, I have literally just a "few" billion more tanks where that came from, you obviously don't get that(LOL, can't get it through your thick skull).

[[BTW, nice M.A.C. gun, ideas great, though a bit borrowed from a coilgun or railgun...just...huge, and slightly original(this might be denial...maybe I -am- going through denial...uh oh, my boat is flooding)]]

I haven't said something that make you cry, honestly :p I haven't see your utterly-magnificent RPs, so you might be want to improve your own RPs rather than lecturing it to other people. And this: viewtopic.php?p=1354649#p1354649 covers almost anything about godmodding.

Just looking through your military stats you only have a combined army number of 16,800 and a budget of $ 73,065,162.24. How can you have rail guns and graviton cannons?

If you want to see my -best- RP, go here(It is FAR from what most players on here are capable of, but it is still...something?): viewtopic.php?ns=1&f=31&t=235807

It got a little sucky after a while, and it just started...I was sick when I posted my replies, so I didn't really explain what was going on in the post, or even the wind considering that my character is like...2,000 feet up in the air.

U.S.A.

My Nation does NOT reflect my actual political views.
Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a university professor. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a balanced attitude towards humanity in general.

Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible principled egalitarian with few strong convictions.

It's very good, really :) But many people are more capable to RPing than you, and only few of them have wrote stickied guides.

Again, rather than being laughed, ridiculed and ignored to death (very common in NS) I suggest you to stop lecturing newbs (sorry about rude words), unless it's something that does not exist in link that I've provided.

You got those stats with a tracker, yes? Here's the thing: those aren't configured for FT nations. Heck, even a lot of MT nations disregard them.

You advertised a RP. *Shakes head solemnly* You by yourself only have 14 million people, and you are teaching people. Stop with the madness.

Trying to flamebait? It's just very unrealistic to have such technology when you can't even keep a small army well equipped and trained. Not saying you can't have such things but in larger role plays with people who actually play realistically to their nations economy and spending, wouldn't so much as even acknowledge you.

Before RPing (and make an useless guide), I suggest you to read them. Works to me..I think.
