Strong enough to crush a machine gun/arm.

But it doesn't matter much now, since he's dead and there'll be time to rebuild it or make it into something better if you so choose.

So there's a magic-draining field of plot convenience, but it doesn't affect the bad guy?

If so, I'm calling bullshit and giving James his powers back.

It is done.

A warm summer sun beat down on the grassy valley that surrounded the village of Fujimaki, one of the many homes of the Kodoku Gādian race. In the distance, a solitary Yamagera(Gray-Faced Woodpecker) could be heard knocking a melody, seemingly tuned to rhythmic passing of the wind as it whistled through the grass. Peacefulness has a firm hold here, when...

"Wait up, Hiraku! Slow down already!"

Two boys, both Kodoku Gādian burst through the grass, arriving into a small clearing. One of them, however, was considerably ahead of the other one. A quick glance could discern that the first one, a young man with a tousled mop of reddish hair and twinkling red eyes, was grinning considerably. However, behind him, his friend—a boy with long jet-black hair, his pained face speckled with freckles—was panting greatly, his eyes giving away a feeling of being overwhelmed.

The first boy, Hikaru, slowed to a stop and turned around, still grinning. His beige tunic flowed in the wind. "Have it your way,  Kaito," He said playfully. Gesturing to himself in a wide sweep, he winked. "I've stopped. That's what you wanted, right?"

Kaito scowled at this. "Screw that. Everyone knows you're the fastest runner in the village. I swear, you could have rivaled Kazuki Yuki during his time on this earth." Panting again, he gasped for a bit "Just...let me catch my breath for a moment."

Hiraku sighed. "Fair enough." Turning away, he paused for a couple seconds. Scratching his ear, he turned back. "Well, looks like your moment's up."

At this point, Kaito was standing up straighter than he was before, though his face was still bright red. "Alright," He said slowly, staring at Hiraku, "What the heck did'ja drag me out here for anyway?" Hiraku beamed. "About time you asked. Let me explain to you why. You see—"

Anything else he was about to say was drowned out fully by a startling cry of "Hiraku!" At this, he stiffened. "Crap, crap, crap!" Hiraku muttered,  recognizing immediately the voice. "My mother." He raised an eyebrow, thinking out loud. "I have to say, I wonder how the hell she found us all the way out here."

It was then that Hiraku's mother burst onto the scene. Long brown hair cascaded down to the middle of her back, it partially covered her face of tender complexion. Shooting out like a bullet, she grabbed her son by the tunic and to Hiraku's chagrin, threw him up in the air. At this, Kaito took a tentative step back.

Crashing down to earth, Hiraku groaned. "What the heck was that for?" His mother hoisted him to his feet and began dragging him away. "The Naitosēji(Night Sage) wants a word with you," She explained curtly. Hiraku's eyes widened at this. "W-what?" He stammered, "One of the Tsuinkenja(Twin Sages)? What the heck would they want with me?"

His mother looked back at him. "Actually, I have no clue. It would be best for her to explain it once you arrive at..."

Elfen High.

The huge building loomed in front of Hiraku, towering intimidatingly to all that stood before it. Clothed in a grey, rather tight fitting suit, he darted a glance down to the briefcase he was carrying in his left hand. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes.

It was still burned into his memory, just as if it had happened yesterday. The decades made no difference on his psyche; Hiraku was unable to let it go, didn't want to let it go. The blood, the hate, the pure evil that had dominated that entire day.

Yumiko.

He could still picture her face, frozen in a perpetual smile. It was that day, under the cherry blossoms. It was the day he knew that everything would be at peace for him. 'How naive', Hiraku thought to himself. 'If only I knew.'

If only for that day. The day when that was ripped from him in the most painful sense possible. That, more than any other of the joyous moments, had seared his conscience. And Hiraku spoke one sentence then. It wasn't a curse of the Yokai, it wasn't a prayer for the future of the Kodoku Gādian. In fact, for the most part, it would have been unambiguous to most any person that could have ever heard it. He cursed the man, the one man who made the decision not only to wittingly eliminate the lives of the innocent citizens of two cities, but unwittingly cause the destruction of one of the most ancient races to have resided on Earth.

"Truman, you utter bastard."

As he walked up to the door of Elfen High, Hiraku made a promise. The future of the Kodoku Gādian was left with him, and through his work here, their revival would eventually be imminent. It wouldn't matter how long it would take—it would take nothing short of death for him to stray from this commitment.

Taking another deep breath, Hiraku looked into the grooves of the doors, of the entrance way to his new future. If he didn't do it now, he never would.

He knocked.

"Come in."

Despite the calm tone that drifted through the wooden door of the hut, a commanding undertone resonated in it. Cracking the door open, Hiraku slipped in. A scent of jasmine incense caught his senses, drawing him to its source, a group a candles strewed off to the side.

His gaze drifting again, it settled on the figure standing in the middle of the room, a wizened old figure with her back turned to her guest. Straightening up suddenly, Hiraku bowed deeply. One of the Tsuinkenja was standing in front of him, so it was in his best interests to be as respectful as possible. "Um..." Hiraku grasped around for his words, "It's a great honor to be called here, your honor, my great Elder, oh Nai—"

Hiraku was cut off by a strong blow to the side of his head. Sprawling on the ground, he groaned. Looking up into the face of the Night Sage, he noticed her features were contorted into a grimace and she had her hands tightly clutching her waist in a defiant gesture. "Just because I've lived multiple lifetimes more that you doesn't mean you can carry on like an imbecile in front of me," She snapped at Hiraku. "Just address me as 'Elder.' Understand?"

Clawing himself off the floor, Hiraku nodded sheepishly. "Loud and clear...Elder." Once he was standing again, Elder spoke again. "It would seem the best thing to so is to delve straight into business. Do you understand why you've been called here?" Hiraku shook his head. "No," He said cautiously, "But whatever it is, I didn't do it."

Elder shook her head disapprovingly. "Naïve little boy," She sighed, "You are not in any trouble. However, that may come later, once I am finished with the prophecy." Hiraku's blood ran cold. "A...prophecy?"

The Elder rapped him on the head again. "Am I speaking gibberish? You heard me, a prophecy." Hiraku rubbed his head sheepishly, but the pain he was feeling could be considered little relative to the curiosity that had come over him. "Why the heck would there be a prophecy about me?"

Elder shrugged. "How the heck am I supposed to know the universes' intentions. All I do is interpret it." Hiraku looked at her blandly. "You don't say," He said sarcastically. In response, Elder waived a dismissive hand. "I'll pretend I didn't hear that so I spare both of us the pain that goes with it."

Beginning to pace back and forth, Elder shook her head. "But I digress," She said, "The prophecy, right? Well, I might as well just tell you." At this point, it felt the air temperature dropped immensely as she spoke. "As I was meditating, I received a premonition that the Kodoku Gādian were to fall through turbulent times during the prime of your life. I myself shall not be on this earth by this point, having completed the Ketsueki rirīsu(Blood Release), the time-honoured ritual of the ancients our race has practiced for an eternity."

"But what would this have to do concerning me?" Hiraku interrupted. Elder glared at him. "Well, you'd think an entire race being in trouble would concern you, but if you would let me finish, I'll inform you on the part that you are involved with specifically."

"Ahem," She said, "As I was saying, the Kodoku Gādian were to fall on hard times. And you, Hiraku, this is where you come in. You will nurse our race back from  the brink, just when the time seems the darkest. Of course, you will not complete this journey alone. You will have help, from one man in particular. You will know him when the time is right."

"Wait..." Hiraku burst out, "What man? Is he Kodoku Gādian?"  Elder bowed her head. "No," she affirmed, "Not Kodoku Gādian. I am...not sure exactly what he is, actually. However, it is in my abilities to inform you of his name."

"The man you must seek shall be known as..."

"Mr. Crowley will see you now."

The receptionist looked over at Hiraku, who was sitting in one of the chairs present in the lobby adjacent to the Headmaster's office. A look of boredom(or was that contempt?) on her face, she gestured over to the doorway. "You can go in," She said in a flat voice.

Hiraku looked at her cautiously. Her tone had thrown him off guard, but he knew it would be best if he didn't let that shake him for too long. Standing up, he straightened his tie. Picking up his briefcase, he wiped a hand on his forehead. Walking over to the entrance to Crowley's office, he took a deep breath. Exhaling, he turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.

Alastor Crowley was seated behind his desk, currently engaged in an activity on his computed. Looking up, he noticed Hiraku. Speaking, he asked, "So, you're here to inquire about that job?"  Receiving a nod, Crowley gestured to the seat in front of his desk. Momentarily diverting his attention back to his computer, he could be heard muttering, "Hm, better save that in favorites."

Turning back to Hiraku, he pulled out a folder with the words 'JOB APPLICANTS' pasted glaringly on the front. Rustling through the papers, Crowley whipped a packet up in under the man's face. Taking a pencil out of his suit pocket, he tossed it over to Hiraku. "You'd better fill that out while I inform you about what you're getting into."

Folding his hands in front of him, Crowley began his mini-lecture. "Now, as you can see from the front page of the packet, Elfen High has been greatly recognized for it's long, illustrious history..." Crowley died off after noticing Hiraku's eyebrows being raised to heights not even known to be possible. A wide grin forming on his face, he waved a dismissive hand. "You've got me; I'm just bullshitting you."

As Hiraku turned the first page, he continued listening to Crowley. "Actually," The headmaster admitted, "I'd probably just tell you why you're sitting here right now. Unfortunately, the only job we had open right at the time of your application was Health. The teacher was caught taking roles in certain films, and due to strict contract obligations, we had no choice but to remove her from her job."

Crowley shrugged her shoulders. "Now, I must say it was an admirable occupation for her to commit to—in fact, you might still her around  my office occasionally. However, if you can see from Section 34.5(B), moonlighting is strictly forbidden. In that case, it was almost a shame, really."

Placing the pencil down, Hiraku pushed the completed packet towards the headmaster. "It's finished," He said quietly. At this, Crowley stood up and straightened his tie. A smile on his face, he extended his hand to the man sitting in front of him.

"In that case, welcome to Elfen High, Mr. Kimura."
