Heat. A heavy, dry, searing heat that forced itself into your skin, stealing all of the water inside your tissues all the way down to the bone. There was no protection from it, no way to escape it. The environment of Hell was designed to kill those who could not survive, to cull the weak from the herd so that only the strongest would survive.

This is where Christopher found himself. Sweat pants, t-shirt, and thick house coat wrapped around him as he came to flat on the burning, hard rock that made up Hell's landscape. His mind, muddled by dehydration and the disorientation of death, made him unable to comprehend the environment he was in. Without his glasses his vision was blurry, and with the constant blinking in an attempt to keep the eyeballs moisturized he could barely see where he was, causing him to thrash and stumble around like a drunken madman. Finally, a sliver of thought made its way through, and he shed the house coat.

Getting to his feet, weakly, his mind began to straighten itself out. He looked around, attempting to get his bearings in the heat and under the bright, otherwordly light of Hell's skies. The terrain was flatish, with no settlements or people to be seen for miles. He remembered the reports from Justin, currently deployed in the ISSR, about the dangerous environment of Hell. How it, more than attacks by demon forces, wildlife, friendly fire, or accidents, had claimed the lives of soldiers and scientists. He had to find shelter, a way to contact the base, and soon lest he die a most painful death.

So he picked a random direction and began walking. He had no idea where he was going, what direction, or how long he went for. He just pushed himself on, refusing to stop for any rest. At one point he heard a reconnaissance plane pass by overhead, but it was too high and Chris too weak to even attempt to signal it. He just continued on, hoping for salvation soon, even as he felt his body break down with every step.

Finally, after what could only have been several hours, did he find some sort of fruit. Large rock formations appeared in front of him, several large enough to provide shade. Oddly, despite the brightness of the sky, the area that contained the rocks was dark, almost black. But he pushed aside any thoughts of danger - He needed something to protect him as he walked, and he could feel his skin beginning to peel.

The moment he entered the shadows his skin began to cool. Slowly the dryness began to disappear, as if the shade itself were replacing the water leeched out of him by the heat. Energy began to return, and the peeling skin and the cuts and bruises on his bare feet began to heal and fade. "Interesting..." Christopher muttered, as his mind began to focus on the strange properties of this place. The shadows seemed to extend forever, but his way was marked by the occasional break in the rocks that allowed light and the searing heat to enter - But only where the cracks were. He quickly learned to avoid them.

The amount of time that passed was impossible to determine - Whatever generated the light in the skies never seemed to dim, and the rock formation seemed to continue forever. However, his body and mind were weary from so much walking, and he decided to allow himself some rest. Finding a flat, somewhat-comfortable place amongst the rocks, he rolled up the housecoat for use as a pillow and slept.

An indeterminate amount of time later, Christopher snapped awake from a noise, what seemed like a deep rumbling from off in the distance. It seemed to be getting closer...

Slowly Christopher got to his feet, ears and eyes focused on the sound. The echoing in the rocks made it hard to pinpoint the source, and his near-sightedness made it hard to figure out any shapes. He tried to control his breathing and remain as motionless as possible, but in an unknown but known-to-be-hostile place that was rather hard to do.

The rumbling came closer, and closer, until int transformed into a rhythmic boom. The sound of rock spraying up into the air joined the boom, indicating footsteps of a large and heavy creature. Closer, closer, the shadows concealing it as well as they concealed the human.

Until there it was. A bulky demon stretching at over ten feet tall, its stout body seemingly nothing but muscle. its right hand dragged a bag of human corpses, scientists and soldiers alike. The demon stopped next to a boulder that went up to its chest, and swung the corpses on top of the boulder. It opened the bag and began to set out the corpses, preparing to feast. Suddenly it paused, nostrils flaring as if it smelled something... "Who dares enter the lair of Xalbex Bloodcrusher?" It asked, voice booming but calm. It began to move towards the human...

Christopher ran. Before the demon named Xalbex could react he was running full-tilt through the rocks, heading towards where Xalbex came from. A mighty roar shook the darkness, followed by the sounds of pursuit that came nearer and nearer...

Suddenly, light. The end of the rock formation. A return to open ground, where Chris could make his escape. Step by step he came closer...

But in his haste he missed a rock jutting up from the ground. His left foot slammed into it, breaking bones and sending him tumbling head-over-heels, causing more cuts and bruises. To top it all off, he rolled right out into the blazing heat and whacked his head against another rock, causing him to go into a daze. Landing hard on his chest, he attempted to get to his feet when Xalbex appeared and grabbed him by the shirt. "Scrawny little thing." The demon stated offensively, lifting Chris up to his eye level. "Your heart will make for an excellent dessert."

That's when physics took over - Chris' shirt tore, sending him falling down to the ground. Quickly he got to his feet and ran - Although his mobility was hobbled by the broken left foot and the tatters of his shirt. Xalbex chased him, and with his great strides quickly overtook the smaller Canadian. "That's what I like!" He laughed as he tripped his dessert, causing him to tumble and end up on his back. "I enjoy a meal that tries to run! In fact, this hunt has left me a little hungry..." He leaned in, seemingly trying to determine which body part to eat first.

Christopher grabbed a pair of large rocks with both hands and slammed them into the sides of Xalbex' head - They shattered on impact, but seemed to accomplish what Christopher needed. Xalbex fell over, seemingly unconscious. Christopher scrambled out from under him and, on pure adrenaline, he ran.

03/11/2019 - 1400 Hours

Corporal Justin Straga stood watch in one of the guard towers flanking the main gate of the ISSR compound, scanning the horizon with a pair of binoculars. Behind him on a table sat his C14 Timberwolf rifle and a large cooler filled with ice and bottles of water.

Turning around, he grabbed one of the bottles and took a drink. Turning back, he again scanned the horizon, seeing nothi-Wait, what is that? He noticed a figure limping towards the ISSR, a figure that had somehow escaped his notice. He zoomed in...

And froze. Blinking several times, he zoomed in more and tried to focus. There was no way that it could be... But it was. No mistake. No shirt, skin red and peeling, body dry as a raisin. Tattered black sweatpants and bloody, bruised feet, the left one clearing broken. His hands carrying bloodied demon daggers, around his neck a cord made of demon's skin with ten fangs.

"Corporal Straga to base, I've got a human approaching the base. He needs medical assistance, over." Justin immediately radioed. "That crazy son of a bitch..." He muttered to himself afterwards. "What the fuck is he doing here?"

Within minutes a medical Humvee escorted by a pair of LAV III's raced out the gate and intercepted the Corporal's friend and roommate. The boy who should be dead was brought into the ISSR and immediately taken to a medical bay for intensive treatment, as well as debriefing on his experiences. Corporal Straga was not allowed to visit him for several days, and when he did the person he saw was not the same as the one he had said goodbye to several months before.

Instead of a university boy, what sat in front of him in a hospital gown, a cast over his left foot and a fire in his eyes, was the boy who walked through Hell and emerged a man.

Alrighty. Personally, I don't mind if they escaped.

Besides, I fucked up Hell. There's gonna be a lot of fallout because of Vernil, and I'm proud to have been the one to have set demonic culture back a few thousand years.

Ende wrote:But seriously, what the fuck is Vernil?

He's the Demonic Prince of the Song.

Basically, I figure that the powers of people in EH are based on who believes in them - for example, a shitload of people believe in Christianity, which makes even some Angels more powerful than most gods. Not many people still believe in Norse paganism, which means that Thor and Loki are limited in their powers (hence Thor being a drunk).

Going on that logic, every single culture and person has an affinity with music. Being the personification of all music and song gives Vernil an insane amount of power.
