Matchday Eighteen… They paraded through the streets of the capital city ‘till the wee small hours, Jesse Nakatsuru triumphantly carried aloft a heaving sea of bodies towards Robinson House, where the squad were met by President Morton herself and bestowed with all the honours their incredible achievement demanded. Fools might claim there are no heroes left in this cruel, callous world – but no longer. We have found them. And they wear blood red.

Ahh, the magic of the Aeropag Football Invitational @ The Olympic Tower Stadium.

All things considered – what with twenty year-old Jaime Zamora between the sticks for the whole thing and more than a few Scorpions readying themselves for World Cup action – this was a pretty impressive gong, even if we won’t pretend to understand the format. If the heavenly father had meant us to play in brackets, he wouldn’t the straight knockout competition.

Can you be cruel and callous, by the way? That’s always bothered me. Surely cruelty implies a certain degree of malign concern in the suffering of others, whereas the alternative suggests wholehearted disinterest. Why are the two concepts so commonly paired thus, in that case? Not just because they both begin with the letter C, surely?

Here’s another thing that begins with the letter C (besides cookie which, I have to declare, is good enough for me): Caires City, who went down two-one at home to Green Island as the Clausura finally contrived to get underway. That itself wasn’t really a story, even if it was only the Errant Knights’ fourth league defeat of the season and comes just weeks (ish) after Dionísio’s side knocked the GIZ out of the CMS Cup. What was, was the absence of Lúthien Anwamanë for the visitors.

Now, look. Shut up. Hush. There’s no conspiracy, no sinister plans to stop Green Island taking a fourth straight title. Or, to put it another way, there probably are, but this wasn’t part of them. She just got a nasty little shin injury in training that’ll leave her out of action for eight weeks.

No! Honest t’God, guv, straight up, look at this face. Would this face lie to you, guv? This is a face of sincerity. These things happen, y’know? Look at Albrecht FC’s goalkeeping crisis, and, and, and… that. Stuff happens.

Anyway, the loss of the most reliable goalscorer in CMSC history for a good portion of the Clausura is naturally a major blow, but it’s not as though the GIZ are without means. They have Ben Clayton, for one – a talented young man who’s always done well when given the chance and will be certain to grasp this one with both hands after James Masters and Shawn O’Connell a proper run-around all afternoon. If he can deal with the pressure of being instantly labelled as the future of Candelariasian goalscoring (we might be quite decent at this footballing lark, but we really don’t produce strikers… apart from arguably one of the best ones in the multiverse, but… hush), the Clotaire native might just prove to be the saviour of Green Island’s season. Not that they really look like needing divine intervention just yet. On account of being top of the table, and all.

Fresh from adding the Aeropag trophy and a sizable lump of gold to the cabinet, Albrecht FC kicked back off at home with a relatively simple victory at Port of Clotaire (following the ubiquitous few minutes of medal-parading, which even Nakatsuru and Adam Kouakou Kouamé were able to join in with without being pelted by too many bottle tops), while MarquezOW – having valiantly fended off an approach for their manager during the break, by all (well, their own) accounts – remain in touch in this three-horse race.

The Marbles probably don’t, however, and dropped a place after a frankly pathetic first-half capitulation to Saurin’s finest.

Still… Sixth!

AFC MN Smith 2-1 Ironside-Talinger (Van der Laan 18, Budden 58; Illés 53)
Albrecht Turkish 0-0 Caires Sports
Arrigo Portuguese 2-2 Radyukevich CSC (H. Anderson 35, Álvarez 90+1; Endacott 7, Van Dijk 75)
Caires City 1-2 Green Island (Williams 58; Clayton 25, Kures 65)
El din Marbles 1-2 McDonald SC (Silva 2; Andryan 12, Williams 45+1)
KT Hotspur 1-1 NAPPC (Nilsson 58; Van Dyke 88)
Marquez-Onwere 2-0 Turks’ Club (Smit 52, Gómez 83)
Port of Clotaire 0-2 Albrecht FC (Kim 7, Tekeste 42)
Tenderville United 2-0 Mayo Valley (Gaynor og 19, Night 42)

Matchday Nineteen… Reuben Kennedy is not one of the most popular men in suburban Albrecht right now.

A one-time left winger who spent most of his professional career with boyhood club Albrecht Turkish, Kennedy never quite hit the ultimate heights in domestic football nor received a senior C&M call-up, but he has none the less been considered one of Hoxton’s more favoured sons of recent years. His nascent managerial career hasn’t been a relentless journey towards legendary status, and switching from a Sloane Wanderers side riding high in the CMSC2 promotion shake-up to a Turks’ Club outfit destined to go straight back down appeared something of a retrograde step. It probably still is. But at least they have a sizable victory in the Turkish derby to crow about.

On one level, this was simply a superb spoiling performance, with Kura-Pellandi holding midfielder turned full-back Ali Al-Fayoomi pressing Koviljko Randjelovic out of the game for eighty minutes – the World Cup winner (alright, alright, we won’t go on about it…) limping off thereafter – and both Bakker and Calabrese just-about-lawfully kicked to within an inch of their lives by Kam Letcher and Georgia Kennedy (no relation). But, during the second half, the Turks played some genuinely scintillating football – the performances of Taeshanese wingers Tyler Kenroe and Oliver Stone worthy of particular praise at this juncture – and showed a little something of what this side really should be capable of achieving. With the gap to Ironside and – still shockingly – Caires Sports just two points, relegation may suddenly be something rather less than a foregone conclusion.

It takes two to tango, mind you, and Turkish were simply abysmal. The suspension of goalkeeper Lyle Gwyther (sent off last weekend… did we forget to mention that? Naughty us) didn’t help, with Cockburn Wu clearly a very talented young man but still lacking the essentials to play at the highest level just yet, it would seem. Their season really has fizzled out entirely, and it would be little surprise to see the likes of Mo Evans, Reuben Faulkner, Brandon Qiu, Lorí Sànchez and Jacob Shaw given regular starts throughout the Clausura as Mannasuch begins to rebuild for XXXVIII. Unless he doesn’t. Who can say?

Elsewhere, the Clotaire clubs were having fun – the Jukos condemning MarquezOW to a damaging second defeat of the season and the PoC taking the points in a seven-goal thriller in Peregrinus City. McDonald SC, meanwhile, had Wanderley back from injury and smashed three past a shell-shocked Tenderville – leaving the Flying Fish a frankly ridiculous eighth, and surely putting Mike Alvintzi’s name up there as the foremost Candelarian contender for the C&M job.

AFC MN Smith 0-1 Caires City (Jones 18)
Albrecht FC 2-1 Mayo Valley (Kim 3, Morrison 75; Tillström 10)
Caires Sports 0-2 El din Marbles (Herráez 12, Pavoni 33)
Green Island 1-0 Arrigo Portuguese (Clayton 82)
Ironside-Talinger 0-0 KT Hotspur
McDonald SC 3-0 Tenderville United (Wanderley 4 and 88, Ģipslis 76)
NAPPC 3-4 Port of Clotaire (Prescott 1 and 15, Merselis 83; O’Airmeadhaigh 3 and 41, Hamblett 47, De Opper og 64)
Radyukevich CSC 1-0 Marquez-Onwere (Redzic 9)
Turks’ Club 3-1 Albrecht Turkish (Wetl 48, Reva 60 and 78; Sànchez 18)

Matchday Twenty… By all accounts (or, at least, those accounts not directly emanating from the MarquezOW press office) it was Alejandro Blanco da Thingy himself who turned down the chance to take on the Sorthern national team job, but a few of the naranja’s more demanding supporters still appeared to require a certain amount of proof of their Globe Cup winning boss’s long-term commitment to the Marquez-Onwere ‘project’, *shudders*.

They probably got it this weekend. You don’t often get such a perfect performance as this, whatever club you support, but here everything clicked in truly impressive style.

If it was Bas Smit who won the headlines, it was arguably Wildash Gatti who ran the show. He might be one of just three regular Candelariasian starters for MarquezOW these days – and by the looks of the dross coming up through the academy right now, that’s not a situation that’s going to get better any time soon – but he’s certainly an extremely valuable one, finally looking enough of a physical specimen to compete in this league and put his enviable natural talents to good use. His, and the naranja’s, victims? Why, t’was Green Island – Ciaran Stockley and his defence made an utter mockery of as they went down four-nil in one of the club’s worse domestic defeats for a decade. With Anwamanë we thought they’d have problems, but not of this nature.

There was less good news for the other Sorthern-influenced side in the CMSC1, Port of Clotaire going down at home to Ironside – thanks largely to an inspired hat-trick from latest-new-hope-of-Candelariasian-goalscoring Ryan Sheppard – and the PoC suffered a double indignity by dropping to fifth in the table, below Radyukevich.

What Wayne Davis is doing at that club is fast becoming the story of the season, never mind Albrecht FC’s revival or Turkish’s XXXVII nightmares. It’s still a squad, never mind a first team, that looks well off competing even for a top-half finish on paper, but that mix of the Zirconian midfield duo, a bit of Osarian steel at the back and some local pride down the left is consistently catching quality sides unawares – Turkish this week, in a two-nil home defeat, and they were good for it too.

Elsewhere, the El din Marbles’ Clausura troubles continued with a heavy loss at home to Tenderville, while Caires City took a victory against KT Hotspur in spite of Leo Williams’ red card – the talented but troubled forward, barely back in action after a career threatening injury, stamped needlessly on Zoárd Szathmári to dig himself into further trouble with the CMSC and a less than impressed Dionísio.

Albrecht Turkish 0-2 Radyukevich CSC (Van Dijk 7, Fox 39)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Álvarez 56)
Caires City 2-0 KT Hotspur (Lloyd 18, Calverd 63)
El din Marbles 1-4 Tenderville United (Herráez 6; Deleks 10 and 12, Kuypers 37, Hastings og 46)
Marquez-Onwere 4-0 Green Island (Gómez 8, Smit 52 and 68, Fishsnapperbottom 78)
McDonald SC 1-2 Albrecht FC (Wanderley 29; Nakatsuru 15, St. Louis 39)
NAPPC 2-2 Mayo Valley (Prescott 68, Van Dyke 87; Warren 2, NorthWalker 14)
Port of Clotaire 2-4 Ironside-Talinger (Sánchez García 7, O'Airmeadhaigh 23; Sheppard 32 and 49 and 81, Zec 76)
Turks’ Club 1-4 Caires Sports (Wetl 8; Valinial 51, Belmore 81 and 90+1, Smith 90+3)

Matchday Twenty-One… Good news if you’re pointy: Vyintanese-owned Albrecht Turkish are back on the winning trail with a thumping four-one home win.

Bad news if you’re pointy: It was against Green Island.

Now. Let me stress again. There’s no conspiracy, no-one’s out to get them, they’re still the best side in the division on paper. They’re just going through a sticky spell.

Perhaps their various Candelariasian, Vanorian and West Zirconian players are exhausted after extended international cup runs. Perhaps li’l Lúthien is more of a leader than we all realise. But right now, this set of players look as though they were only introduced yesterday, and their ever-present defensive deficiencies are being displayed for all to see. Losing out on six points is bad enough; losing their long-held air of invincibility could be far more costly. This is a side that feeds on the fear they engender in others – if it’s gone, so might they.

Albrecht FC scamper on regardless, slamming five past Mark Water this weekend (though even Torrealba conceded that the final scoreline owed more to Tenderville’s valiant desire to push forward and get back in the game during the second half), while the PoC are back into fourth and McDonald’s bid to keep in Globe Cup contention suffered a real blow with the loss of Jesseltonian ‘keeper Sanizam Andu to what looks likes a nasty long-term injury. Former Marbles custodian Vern Touati waits in the wings, but the veteran is hardly an inspiring alternative.

AFC MN Smith 0-2 Marquez-Onwere (Souto Maior 4, Smit 44)
Albrecht Turkish 4-1 Green Island (Robinson 9, Sànchez 19, Werner 25, Bakker 68; Young 45+2)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-1 KT Hotspur (Macanás 76; Rataran 55)
Caires Sports 1-0 Radyukevich CSC (Adirondu 82)
Ironside-Talinger 0-0 Mayo Valley
McDonald SC 2-3 NAPPC (Williams 46, Wanderley 90+1; Van Dyke 8, González Rodríguez 16, Cuesta 62)
Port of Clotaire 3-2 Caires City (Sánchez García 34 and 40 and 66; Neal 65, Andrews og 69)
Tenderville United 0-5 Albrecht FC (Nakatsuru 16 and 78, Tekeste 51, Kouakou Kouamé 66, William 74)
Turks’ Club 0-1 El din Marbles (Nixon 85)

Matchday Twenty-Two… All the big guns won, apart from Radyukevich, who didn’t.

And Tenderville, if you count them as a big gun, who lost the Nethertopian derby with the words ping and pong rattling in their ears. A tempestuous affair, it was, with Lawrence Singer sent off, Carlo Gaggioli stretchered off, and a couple of drunken fights in the stands. Yaaay, they bring so much to Candelariasian football, they really do.

Onward!

Albrecht Turkish 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Sànchez 11)
Caires Sports 0-4 Green Island (Ealovaul 2, Alden 54, Dorack 56, K’latris 57)
El din Marbles 0-1 Albrecht FC (Nakatsuru 13)
Ironside-Talinger 1-1 McDonald SC (Sheppard 11; Fairhope og 6)
Marquez-Onwere 2-0 KT Hotspur (Smit 24, Souto Maior 83)
Mayo Valley 0-3 Caires City (Murray 37, Agostinho 56, González 79)
NAPPC 2-0 Tenderville United (Cuesta 77, Van Dyke 87)
Port of Clotaire 2-0 Arrigo Portuguese (O’Airmeadhaigh 7 and 38)
Turks’ Club 3-2 Radyukevich CSC (Wetl 7, Lacamoire 10 and 64; Williams 39 and 82)

Matchday Twenty-Three… As above, see below. Tenderville won, though. That probably counts for something.

Albrecht FC 1-0 NAPPC (Hamizi 56)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-2 Mayo Valley (Anderson 59; Gaynor 70, NorthWalker 78)
Caires Sports 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Nykvist og 90+3)
Green Island 1-0 Turks’ Club (Ealovaul 59)
KT Hotspur 1-2 Albrecht Turkish (Clayton 73; Robinson 8 and 63)
Marquez-Onwere 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Gómez 7, Joãio 18; Walker 30)
McDonald SC 0-2 Caires City (Doswell og 26, Agostinho 56)
Radyukevich CSC 1-0 El din Marbles (Gaggioli 50)
Tenderville United 1-0 Ironside-Talinger (Night 41)

Matchday Twenty-Four… As that nice little mid-season fallow period continues, with the nation still buzzing after the you-know-what and hushed rumours of floating mice capturing attentions, we can report that, um, it’s still basically as you were again.

Albrecht FC had to work to maintain their lead, mind you, after being reduced to ten men short after half-time – Harry Rosalia, after only a game back between the sticks, sent off for bringing down Ryan Sheppard in the box. Just when it looked as though the Scorpions’ season-running goalkeeping nightmares were set to bite them in the bottom once more, Drake Malan came off the bench to get the all-important finger on Frank Le Tissier’s spot kick and proceeded to keep out efforts from both he and Sheppard until Fahmi Hamizi could get on the end of a Tekeste free-kick and poke home the winner in Talinger.

Barely one minute later, Adeliz Giménez achieved the impressive feat of repeating Rosalia’s earlier trick for the home side – bringing down George Morrison, getting herself sent off, and seeing veteran Thomas Murphy come on for a rare top-flight appearance to save Hamizi’s shot and keep the scoreline a respectable one-nil.

No such numerical cautiousness when it came to goals elsewhere, though (apart from the game between the Spur and Caires Sports, although that’s hardly surprising… and NAPPC and the Marbles, which is more so), with seven apiece in both Hoxton and Zapata. For Green Island, counting down the days until Anwamanë makes a reappearance, there was a morale boosting comeback victory over Radyukevich; the Jukos lacking a little something up front without the injured Jasari McDermott but still able to cause that rickety defence more than a few problems. T’was just unfortunate that Daniele Lanchini and his back four couldn’t avoid conceding five.

Elsewhere, Turkish must be given props for coming back from three-one down at the Solidarity against Port of Clotaire to take an injury time victory, while Tenderville are back up into the top half with three points in Rider Castle but still, of course, have absolutely zip to play for.

AFC MN Smith 3-1 Turks’ Club (Phillips 47, Budden 54 and 89; Lacamoire 59)
Albrecht Turkish 4-3 Port of Clotaire (Alexander 21, Robinson 58, Bakker 81, Randjelovic 90+1; O’Airmeadhaigh 11, Sánchez García 41, Arrigorriagakoa 44)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-1 McDonald SC (Galindo 55; Andryan 17)
Caires City 1-2 Tenderville United (Murray 21; Robbert 54, Deleks 88)
Green Island 5-2 Radyukevich CSC (Tinúviel 5, Young 10, va Drake 40, Durosa 45, Kures 80; Endacott 1, Idle 35)
Ironside-Talinger 0-1 Albrecht FC (Hamizi 88)
KT Hotspur 1-0 Caires Sports (Dariegan 70)
Mayo Valley 1-3 Marquez-Onwere (Subudhi 59; Smit 32, Gómez 47, Gatti 50)
NAPPC 1-0 El din Marbles (Van Dyke 33)

CMS Cup Last 16… A slightly dull draw largely featuring CMSC1 sides at home to CMSC2 outfits brought us a slightly dull round, with a couple of honourable exceptions.

CandelariaAM are the only lower-league side left after a confident display against a Radyukevich team with a UICA finish on their minds, former Wow! and MN Smith striker Owen Fox and eighteen year-old winger Luke Morgan registering the goals for a team whose promotion ambitions look just a tad iffy despite the introduction of a sizable wodge of Sargossa wonga and that always handy comparatively massive stadium. Most of their second tier colleagues battled hard without reward, perennial strugglers Miranda FC doing exceptionally well to take the Marbles to a replay down in the south of Marquez. Quality ultimately won out however, with the XXIX cup winners certainly looking to give their season a bit of a spark after a distressing Clausura thus far.

Marquez very nearly had more heroes to cheer, this time from up the other end of the island, with Gómez United going achingly close to taking Turkish back to their place. Not for the first time this term, Mannasuch’s wisdom was called into question, with a bunch of benchwarmers and Magnus United occasionals called up to take on the assorted plumbers, policemen and electricians from Gómez and the score standing at one-all until the final ten minutes. The manager slung on three changes thereafter, who duly blitzed the exhausted visitors to notch up a four-one win, but young striker Carlos Sáez at least had his day in the sun with a fine strike past Cockburn Wu, and a pleasant day out was had by all.

Marquez-Onwere 2-0 Riverton Olympic (Souto Maior 47, Smit 54)
KT Hotspur 2-0 Candelaria Arsenal (Nilsson 36, González 38)
Albrecht Turkish 4-1 Gómez United (Vostakova 15, Bakker 81, Alexander 84, Yeoman 85; Sáez 46)
Turks’ Club 1-2 Port of Clotaire (Pak 59; O’Airmeadhaigh 2, Archer 72)
El din Marbles 1-1 Miranda FC (Nixon 47; Warren 59)
~ Replay: Miranda FC 0-1 El din Marbles (Nixon 36)
Albrecht FC 2-1 Caires City (Nakatsuru 42, Tekeste 55; Murray 45+2)
Tenderville United 1-0 Deportivo María (Kuypers 18)
Candelaria-Allemali 2-0 Radyukevich CSC (Fox 30, Morgan 89)

Matchday Twenty-Five… There aren’t too many sides who’ve not only missed out on the league title but failed to make the top two despite only losing two matches all term – but that could be just where Marquez-Onwere are heading.

That in itself isn’t ironic, despite what the 10,000 spoons lady may tell you, but what’s more notable is the way in which the naranja’s defence has largely been blamed for their failure to push the top two further despite the club having the best defensive record in the division. The criticism itself often appears a little confused, with Cotuba and Villasenior’s OAP status – and Blanco da Cruz’s unwillingness to either sign a decent younger right-back and/or give clearly talented twenty-three year-old Alejandro Valdez a run on the other side of the back four – condemned as often as veteran Eric O’Brien’s lack of playing time compared to Chris Stewart and Kaeton Fishsnapperbottom.

A bit of parochialism might be to blame, there (us? Never, surely!), though there’s no doubt that this season is proving something of a wasted opportunity with the naranja throwing away far too many matches – they have seven draws thus far – to be truly competitive for anything but another top four finish. Come the start of next season; Cotuba, Villasenior, Joãio, Souto Maior, Oliveira Tavares and Bas Smit will all be thirty or over – past it, in the view of many pundits, who see the club’s chance to make hay in the sunshine as having been and gone. Ricardo Wendell will almost certainly have to splash the cash before the next break. Let’s just hope he’s able to, eh?

He said, ominously.

The fact is, letting a two goal lead in Saurin slip away in the final twenty minutes really isn’t good enough – though we’d also point out that MarquezOW’s current haul of fifty-four points would have been enough to see them top the table at this point of the season last time around. If anything, Green Island have been even better this term than last, and Torrealba’s Tots are simply ridiculously good.

Or else the rest of the division’s just crap. Who can say?

Elsewhere, Juan Carlos Revault’s slow revolution at Portuguese picked up the scalp of Tenderville in one of them seven-goal thrillers we’ve been having rather a lot of – Israel Álvarez, who’s fast turning into a very special player indeed, scoring late past sub ‘keeper Teddy Marshall (Mark Water having hopped off ten minutes before) to wrap up the three points that kept Arrigo’s finest just outside the drop zone.

Caires Sports still aren’t very good, meanwhile (there’s going to be Ramifications there, if we’re not careful), while Leo Williams over in the other third of the casino city really is an utter tit; after receiving two yellow cards in City’s defeat to the Scorpions in Albrecht and earning himself another suspension. The tabloids are using the word ‘troubled’ rather a lot about this ‘boy’, and for once it seems they’re right on both accounts.

Albrecht FC 2-0 Caires City (Hamizi 41 and 80)
Caires Sports 0-1 Port of Clotaire (Sánchez García 81)
Green Island 3-0 El din Marbles (Clayton 27, Ealovaul 55, Kures 63)
Ironside-Talinger 3-1 NAPPC (Le Tissier 28, Sheppard 36 and 47; Cuesta 52)
Mayo Valley 0-1 Albrecht Turkish (Alexander 60)
McDonald SC 2-2 Marquez-Onwere (García 72, Meakin 80; Smit 30 and 45)
Radyukevich CSC 3-2 AFC MN Smith (Williams 3 and 58, Idle 71; Tiller 23, De Woudt 45+1)
Tenderville United 3-4 Arrigo Portuguese (Deleks 52, Kuypers 79; Darby og 86; Salgado 39, Macanás 57, Álvarez 76 and 88)
Turks’ Club 1-1 KT Hotspur (Wetl 66; Clayton 54)

Matchday Twenty-Six… If there was one game that Arrigo Portuguese were going to come alive for, it was surely this one. Hosting Albrecht FC at the EAN, Revault’s men gave a performance of well-why-the-hell-couldn’t-you-have-played-like-that-all-season-hm? proportions.

Revault’s team selection was certainly slightly novel; with Harry Oughton dropped to the bench, Hugo Anderson returning from injury and pushed inside, teenager Hugo Matos – who hasn’t been involved for more than fifteen minutes all season – starting out on the right and up against the legendary Francois St. Louis, and thirty-two year-old full-back Marcial Rocha starting out on the left. Only Israel Álvarez kept his place from a side that won four-three away from home just a week earlier, prompting more than a few eyebrows, but Revault had the last laugh. Some proper last-ditch defending from Galindo and Parrot was still required, but the visitors seemed properly shaken up by all these switch-arounds and, in Matos, Portuguese had a youngster desperate to impress against his boyhood club’s hated rivals.

The occasion didn’t overawe the boy; playing without fear, he set up the other Hugo’s early goal, had Rosalia scrambling on several occasions, and blunted Albrecht’s entire left-sided assault. And yet nobody had really heard of him before now; and one suspects we may never again – pure adrenalin got him through this one, and his actual ability may be shown up in future matches. He’ll still be a Hispanic hero, because they certainly need them – Portuguese’s and MarquezOW’s much-vaunted academy set-ups have been struggling badly of late, and even at the Marbles their hottest young talents appear to be more often English speakers these days – but mighty stallion, hooves on an ant, blahdiblahdiblah, let’s move on.

To Green Island, who also failed to win – a point in Bove, with that only coming late on, allowing them to close the gap on Albrecht FC slightly to four points.

Will that do? Lúthien Anwamanë’s back next week, so we can start cooing all over them again.

AFC MN Smith 1-1 Green Island (D. Tiller 21; Clayton 85)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-0 Albrecht FC (Anderson 14)
Albrecht Turkish 2-0 McDonald SC (Bakker 68, Vostakova 73)
Caires City 1-0 NAPPC (Murray 49)
El din Marbles 1-1 Ironside-Talinger (Nixon 59; Zec 45)
KT Hotspur 1-0 Radyukevich CSC (Dariegan 90)
Mayo Valley 1-0 Caires Sports (Tillström 69)
Port of Clotaire 2-1 Turks’ Club (Hamblett 11, Sánchez García 39; Archer og 67)
Tenderville United 1-2 Marquez-Onwere (Villasenior og 77; Souto Maior 23, Gatti 90+1)

Matchday Twenty-Seven… With Green Island having a virtual bye against a completely pointless KT Hotspur side, the big game this weekend saw Albrecht FC hosting MarquezOW ahead of next weekend’s capital city derby.

Torrealba made just one change to the side that lost in Arrigo, Kim Mihyeon coming in for the injured Nakatsuru, but it’s perfectly clear that the manager doesn’t fancy the Han international (he’s more of a South Asian man, himself), at least as part of a 4-4-2 alongside Hamizi. Presumably, it was a strategy designed to put those under fire naranja full-backs under as much pressure as possible, but it led only to the Scorpions being frequently overrun in midfield. Adam KK and Go Song-ji in particular still have some growing up to do, it would appear.

For all that, Albrecht do have Harry Rosalia back fit, and the extremely capable duo of William and Van Aulen, and duly kept a clean sheet – but the gap over the GIZ has narrowed to just two points.

The other big game was the Clotaire derby – one which ultimately belonged to Jasari McDermott. A twenty-two year-old striker who may, just may, be thefutureofCandelariasiangoalscoring; McDermott attended his first match at the Hilltop at the age of three months, is an accomplished violinist, has one of those micropigs at home, possesses a name that apparently means ‘fearless’ in Swahili whilst being roughly the colour of poster paint, and is generally about as Radyukevich as it’s possible to get. They love him here, and a hat-trick against your hated rivals always goes down well into the bargain. He couldn’t have done it without Patrick Williams, however, the West Zirconian who surely has to be in line for a league-wide Player of the Season tilt if the Jukos can leapfrog the PoC once more and make the top four for the first time in the UICA era.

Elsewhere, the relegation shake-up is just starting to look a little bit definitive, with a four-point gap opening up between Mayo Valley in fifteenth and those in the bottom three. Both Ironside and Caires Sports managed points away from home this weekend, but there’s a significant amount of ground to make up now. Ironside’s almost wholesale, pre-season squad change was clearly a major mistake, with neophyte manager Ebbrell Klein entirely unable to get more than two games in a row out of his various teenage charges and the experience of Ben Zec and Frank Le Tissier yet to rub off on their colleagues. They can probably afford to go down, rebuild again, and plan a renewed assault on the top-flight for XXXIX, but Caires Sports are in a far worse predicament. Who knows if Jagor Aiza will continue to fund a side in the CMSC2, and the local press is already fearing the prospect of the complete sale of the first XI and half the rest of the squad, mostly back to the LIDYT, and the flighty young Aiza pocketing the proceedings before buggering off from whence he came. In the short term, the subsequent administration would at least have a valuable youth system to fall back on, with the likes of Luke Alsheris, Alex Davies, Zachary Davies, Oliver Oliomogbe, Titus Ryan and Behramji Torres showing enough in the reserves to suggest that they’ll be a cut above second division class, but the long-term financial implications for the Knights could be icky in the extreme.

And on that cheery note…

AFC MN Smith 3-0 El din Marbles (Van der Laan 1, Budden 45 and 65)
Albrecht FC 0-0 Marquez-Onwere
Arrigo Portuguese 3-2 NAPPC (Matos 39, Innisvale 45, Macanás 70; Darby og 42, Van Dyke 77)
Caires City 1-1 Ironside-Talinger (O’Connell 46; Illés 62)
Green Island 3-0 KT Hotspur (van Drake 6, Paterson 70, Young 80)
McDonald SC 0-0 Caires Sports
Radyukevich CSC 3-2 Port of Clotaire (McDermott 18 and 37 and 84; Sánchez García 52, Morrissey 69)
Tenderville United 2-2 Albrecht Turkish (Lewis 21, Night 55; Bakker 61, Randjelovic 66)
Turks’ Club 3-1 Mayo Valley (Lacamoire 25, Reva 51, Jones 59; Szatmári 26)

CMS Cup Quarter-Finals… Ahh, a cup competition arises to brighten our lives. How good of it.

The big news, of course (well not of course, of course, since you don’t know what happened yet, but we’re allowed the occasional slip into colloquialism here, it’s a Saturday for God’s sake and I’m a proper sleepy chicken, I can tell you) was the exit of last term’s defeated finalists Albrecht FC after a barnstorming (chickens, cart wheels, spilt milk) cup tie down at Harper Street.

Three other things also happened.

Albrecht Turkish 2-0 KT Hotspur (Calabrese 16, Yeoman 30)
Port of Clotaire 3-2 Albrecht FC (Banks 34, Hooper 36, Hamblett 65; Hamizi 11, Nakatsuru 53)
Candelaria-Allemali 0-0 Marquez-Onwere
~ Replay: Marquez-Onwere 4-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Gatti 25, Cotuba 43, Gómez 60, Fernández 81)
Tenderville United 1-0 El din Marbles (Kuypers 88)

Matchday Twenty-Eight… It’s almost as though someone wants things to be interesting…

The Albrecht derby saw the visitors on top from the off, bossing the midfield and soon forcing Lyle Gwyther into action in the Turkish net. Mannasuch’s decision to drop Áron Mihály – who, admittedly, has been having a series of utter mares of late – in favour of Brandon Qiu, with Dwier Titenburg moved into the centre, for such a big game appeared more than a little risky, but the Vanorian might as well go for broke at this stage. It’s not as though playing it safe was working especially well up until now.

And it did work – Titenburg appeared much the more statesmanlike figure when taking up a role next to the far more volatile Kjarik Tashkir (and later alongside Pablo Estévez, with Tashkir coming off the worse after a robust tackle on Nakatsuru), Qiu stopped Tekeste putting in too many crosses, and Daniel Bakker up t’other end was absolutely on fire. What a pity he didn’t chose to play for his actual homeland, eh? He could be a World Cup winner by now, but noooo. He had to go and be all loyal to mummy and daddy, the big girl. Someone should egg his car.

Two first-half goals were enough to give Turkish the win, see them move up into fifth following the Jukos’ pasting out in the sticks, and put their not-actually-nearest rivals in major danger of throwing their once considerable lead over the GIZ away.

Except…

Enter Port of Clotaire, still as frustratingly inconsistent as their majority nationality would suggest they’d be, but still capable of beating the very best on their day. Or the second-best, in this instance – the GIZ going down one-nil. With MarquezOW easing to the points against NAPPC, the top three are separated by just three points all of a sudden, with goal difference barely an issue either. The naranja will be without Kaeton Fishsnapperbottom for a fortnight, but with Eric O’Brien still about they’re well covered at centre-half and can certainly push for honours, so you might as well forgot all that stuff we said about them a few matchdays ago. Please.

Elsewhere, Portuguese striker Gabriel Macanás and Radyukevich left-back Finlay Edwards are both out for the season, and KT Hotspur are still somehow in the top half.

Albrecht Turkish 2-0 Albrecht FC (Bakker 11 and 32)
Arrigo Portuguese 0-0 Ironside-Talinger
Caires City 1-2 El din Marbles (Jones 42; Silva 31, Pavoni 57)
KT Hotspur 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Jenkins 69)
Mayo Valley 3-0 Radyukevich CSC (Warren 66, Tillström 69, NorthWalker 79)
Marquez-Onwere 3-0 NAPPC (Oliveira Tavares 11, Gatti 23, Smit 43)
McDonald SC 4-0 Turks’ Club (Williams 43, Andryan 47 and 63 and 90+1)
Port of Clotaire 1-0 Green Island (Hooper 35)
Tenderville United 2-1 Caires Sports (Robbert 51, Van Patten 90+1; Belmore 80)

Matchday Twenty-Nine… Mayo Valley are a club that seldom comes up in conversation. They may be home to a few foreigners of note – a handful of continental Rushmoris (but not Continental Rushmoris, obviously), Madonna Warren, a random Ad’ihan full-back, big Ilga NorthWalker) – but no side based in a teensy town out in the wilds of the west are likely to garner significant domestic press attention and finishing eleventh for the third term in a row is surely the height of their ambitions.

But they’re probably not going to go down, now, and manager Zachary Telemans must take considerable applause for that, given how little cash he’s had spend. And, while they’re not exactly thrilling to watch, they do occasionally perform well enough to raise considerable eyebrows. Such as this weekend, funnily enough…

(Just building the tension.)

…at Green Island.

Ooh.

Well one might be tempted to point out the GIZ’s twenty shots on target, Mayo goalkeeper Greg Tipping’s MotM award, and the fact that the visitors scored from long-distance efforts on the two occasions they actually had Ciaran Stockley running… let’s not. Let’s just bask instead in the warm glow of another (sixth!) Green Island defeat, one which leaves them…

…still only three points behind Albrecht FC, actually, after the Scorpions were held at home by Caires Sports. Seems as though everyone’s starting to get a little nervy at the top and, while it’s far too late for Port of Clotaire to get back in the shake-up, MarquezOW are certainly in with a shout. Victory in Talinger moves them up into second, just a point behind Torrealba’s wee ones, with five games and fifteen points left on offer.

Elsewhere, Reuben Kennedy’s Turks’ Club kept up their desperate bid for survival with victory at a Tenderville side rather more focused on the CMS Cup now, while Turkish and Radyukevich remain on the Harpies’ trail for fourth place.

AFC MN Smith 1-2 Port of Clotaire (Phillips 6; Hooper 45+1, O’Airmeadhaigh 87)
Albrecht FC 0-0 Caires Sports
Caires City 0-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Anderson 41)
Green Island 1-2 Mayo Valley (Anwamanë 47; Tillström 28, Allbright 60)
Ironside-Talinger 2-3 Marquez-Onwere (Sheppard 30, Anastasiadis 85; Souto Maior 13, Oliveira Tavares 39, Cotuba 45)
KT Hotspur 0-0 El din Marbles
NAPPC 0-1 Albrecht Turkish (Calabrese 1)
Radyukevich CSC 1-0 McDonald SC (McDermott 68)
Tenderville United 0-2 Turks’ Club (Reva 63, Wetl 82)

Matchday Thirty… Three fairly simple-looking games for the new Big Three, and three fairly simple victories… apart from for MarquezOW, who needed a late winner from Oliveira Tavares to take all three points at home to Caires City.

It’s certainly that part of the season when calculators begin to be wielded in anger, though little at either end of the table can be finalised just yet. Turks’ Club’s relegation won’t be confirmed until matchday thirty-three at the earliest, though the title race may not quite go to the wire as many had suspected, given the various run-ins. Green Island have both Nethertopian outfits either side of welcoming Albrecht FC to Marlow Park, while the Scorpions shouldn’t struggle to take six points at home to either the Jukos or MN Smith. MarquezOW can expect to have a rather harder time of it, with a couple of Marquezian clásicos away from home and a visit from fairly in-form Turkish (Mannasuch’s men could, as it stands, be contenders for the Clausura ‘title’, such that it matters, though it’s the naranja who currently have the edge). And with all three sides having extremely winnable matches on the final day, it’s the next fortnight or so that will most probably count.

So let’s get on with it, shall we? Be the bloody Baptism of Fire again before we know it, after all…

Albrecht Turkish 1-0 Ironside-Talinger (Calabrese 75)
Caires Sports 1-1 NAPPC (Smith 87; González Rodríguez 8)
El din Marbles 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Erik Visser 51; Anderson 28)
Green Island 3-1 McDonald SC (va Drake 35, Aldren 38, Clayton 80; Wanderley 23)
Marquez-Onwere 2-1 Caires City (Souto Maior 31, Oliveira Tavares 87; Rosenthal 51)
Mayo Valley 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Tillström 43)
Port of Clotaire 2-2 KT Hotspur (Hamblett 6, Sánchez García 13; Maxwell 38, González 80)
Tenderville United 1-0 Radyukevich CSC (Van Patten 4)
Turks’ Club 2-4 Albrecht FC (Reva 61, Rosalia og 81; Kennedy og 27, Go 46, Hamizi 65 and 73)

Matchday Thirty-One… Ooh, drama.

Sort of.

To take things in temporal order, Portuguese opened the weekend by entertaining Marquez-Onwere. While this one isn’t one of the more full-on all-Marquezian clashes, historically speaking, the inhabitants of the Candelarias’ second island do like to make an effort to help the CMSC avoid become utterly sterilised, and the locals are rather getting into their club’s mini race to finish ahead of Juan Carlos Revault’s former employers from across the water. What was more, they and their players were well aware that three fairly unlikely points could, if other results went their way, secure Portuguese’s top-flight status for another term. A Globe Cup place wasn’t even out of the question.

Revault himself appears to be revelling in this opportunity to discard the tedious traditions of KT Hotspur and play some moderately attack-minded football for once. It’s not exactly all tippy-tappy prettiness, and his frustration with some of the limited talents at his disposal – as well as an increasingly self-indulgent Harry Oughton, who seems to have regressed about a decade over the last twelve months or so – is self evident, but he is at least creating a highly unpredictable unit that can catch out the best. With Macanás out for the season, Greg Innisvale played alone up front against MarquezOW and proved that he still has plenty to give even if his legs have long since given out. The Ad’ihani certainly caused Stewart and Fishsnapperbottom no end of trouble, splitting the pair and running onto an Álvarez pass to put away the opener after twenty-four minutes, and bringing about the own goal that had the visitors two down inside the first half.

The naranja regained their composure during the second period but, with the home side pressing tightly and biting and their heels, Blanco da Cruz’s skilful stars were unable to play their natural games and threaten Romero’s goal. At a most crucial point of the season, MarquezOW duly fell to only their third league defeat.

One of three afternoon kick-offs, meanwhile, saw Green Island leave the godforsaken hellhole of, um, Green Island in favour of peaceful, untroubled Ratos Island – and were soon they too were coming a-cropper. With Andrés García clearly realising that he’s living on borrowed time with the Dragons, Tenderville could rather afford to relax and try to play some actual football for a change. It proved to be an occasion for the undoubted talents of Mertijn van Patten to come to the fore, with Paul Paterson charged with dealing with the left-footed teenager and generally making an utter hash of it.

Two-nil down themselves after barely more than half an hour, the GIZ pulled one back through Jameson Aldren and looked comfortably on course to ease back in front during the second half – particularly once Durosa had finished off a typically luscious team move for the equaliser. It didn’t happen – instead, Green Island spent most of the half trying desperately to hold off van Patten and cling onto the point; only the withdrawal of a disappointing Jhanna Young and her replacement by young Ethan Robertson gave them a bit of spark but the winner remained less than forthcoming.

All that left Albrecht FC the chance to reopen a four-point lead at the top with a victory over Radyukevich. They did.

And where that leaves us is that the Scorpions could wrap up the title as soon as next week, with a victory in Zapata and a MarquezOW defeat in El din, while Massimo’s charges will certainly be out of the running unless they can take at least a point.

Elsewhere, O’Airmeadhaigh’s season is over following a nasty ickle groin tear, but he may just have done enough to guide the PoC to fourth place; while Turks’ Club are right back in the hunt for survival. But who cares, honestly?

Albrecht FC 2-0 Radyukevich CSC (Kim 48, Nakatsuru 71)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-0 Marquez-Onwere (Innisvale 24, Cotuba og 35)
Caires City 1-1 Albrecht Turkish (Jones 7; Calabrese 69)
Ironside-Talinger 2-1 Caires Sports (Sheppard 50, J. Smith 82; Belmore 46)
Mayo Valley 3-1 KT Hotspur (Warren 14, NorthWalker 57, Subudhi 75; Clayton 59)
McDonald SC 3-0 AFC MN Smith (Williams 75, García 84, Wanderley 90+1)
Port of Clotaire 2-1 El din Marbles (Sánchez García 10, Hamblett 41; Silva 41)
Tenderville United 2-2 Green Island (Kuypers 13, Van Patten 31; Aldren 40, Durosa 49)
Turks’ Club 3-1 NAPPC (Wetl 23, Lacamoire 38 and 62; González Rodríguez 23)

Matchday Thirty-Two… Let us journey, dearest ones, to Zapata; a city on the edge.

Well it is a port, to be fair. It hasn’t really got much choice.

But this is also a city that hasn’t felt especially chuffed with life for many, many months now; a city aware that everything is continuing exactly as normal and that absolutely nothing is wrong or otherwise out of the ordinary, and that the groaning creatures milling about around its outskirts begging for some kind of help are meant to be there, honest. Everyone’s… jumpy. It’s not so much that they feel, all instinctively like, that the shit, whatever its composition, is going to hit the fan sooner or later. More that they rather think it probably already has, and everyone’s just trying not to notice. Under these conditions, Albrecht FC floated into town for probably the biggest game of the season.

Green Island certainly started off in rather finer fashion; with the Scorpions’ attempts keep the game as open as possible playing right into the home side’s hands. Rosalia had turned no fewer than five good efforts around the upright before the first fifteen minutes were out, and Torrealba’s side were clearly being prepared for a punishing.

At this point, Go Sang-ji grew up. The vaguely home-grown Han international has been a key component in the capital giants’ title push, and could yet follow in the footsteps of some of Albrecht FC’s finest holding midfielders – Matteo Corradini, Ben Zec, even Torrealba himself – but he remains still relatively untested and truly gifted opponents can leave him in knots at times. With Nakatsuru and Kouakou Kouamé looking suddenly lightweight; Espy va Drake ran rings around Go throughout the first half, but whatever the manager had to say to him at half-time clearly worked.

Perhaps he simply benefited from fifteen spare minutes to contemplate va Drake’s skills, but either way Go ensured that the second forty-five was a different story entirely and the Vanorian great was reduced to infancy as Go blocked him off at every path. With Young, Aldren and Durosa unable to fill the void, Massimo was forced to shuffle his team; moving va Drake out to his historical role on the flanks and throwing on Ethan Robertson once more for a bit of last-ditch adventure. On the seventy-five minute mark, Go himself sent Hamizi clear for the Jesseltonian to score what had become Albrecht’s rightful winner.

Five minutes after that Green Island equalised.

And that was the way it stayed, with premature celebrations from the visitors in knocking the GIZ out of the title race proving entirely that. In truth, a point was everything that Torrealba and his side could really have asked for, leaving them five ahead of Massimo’s team and Green Island themselves needing a miracle. MarquezOW split the two, still two points behind the leaders after victory in El din. Unglamorous though the two-nil win ultimately was, with some last-ditch defending and a red card for Fishsnapperbottom, it kept the naranja right in with a shot of picking up their first league title since Andy Woolworth’s XXVI-winning squad more than two decades ago.

Action at the other end of the table left us with five clubs still able to go down. Two did themselves big favours – Turks’ Club’s vital away victory at Ironside moving the Khatib-Gassett side onto twenty-seven points alongside Talinger’s finest and MN Smith, while Caires Sports went and won the Caires derby, would you Adam and Eve it, and sit a point higher on. NAPPC, meanwhile, certainly can’t breathe easy yet – they have thirty points to their name following a soporific home defeat to the Jukos, who for their part have another Globe Cup run guaranteed with sixth place in the bag.

AFC MN Smith 1-2 Tenderville United (Budden 67; Kuypers 46, Holtz 87)
Albrecht Turkish 2-0 Arrigo Portuguese (Calabrese 24, Randjelovic 50)
Caires City 0-1 Caires Sports (Belmore 77)
El din Marbles 0-2 Marquez-Onwere (Smit 44, Souto Maior 55)
Green Island 1-1 Albrecht FC (Kures 80; Hamizi 75)
Ironside-Talinger 1-2 Turks’ Club (Le Tissier 62; Lacamoire 14, Stone 37)
KT Hotspur 1-1 McDonald SC (Rataran 5; Wanderley 36)
NAPPC 1-2 Radyukevich CSC (Cuesta 77; Redzic 2, Williams-Ottosen 46)
Port of Clotaire 1-0 Mayo Valley (Hooper 32)

CMS Cup Semi-Finals… We’d go into this in exhaustive detail. Really, we would. But we’re tired, and frankly can’t be arsed.

So here are the results.

Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Tenderville United (1-1 AET) (Souto Maior 88; Villasenior 46 og) (Tenderville United wins 3-1 on penalty kicks)
@ Estadio Nacional, Arrigo

Port of Clotaire 0-2 Albrecht Turkish (Bakker 33, Robinson 44)
@ New Sausages Arena, Allemali

What that all means is that Turkish are still on the hunt for their first trophy of the Viela era, while Tenderville are through to their third CMS Cup final in four seasons.

Just so’s you know.

Sorthern Union of Students Football League, 2043 season

No surprise in the top two of the Students Union League with the University of the Bleeding Obvious winning the title for the third time running with S. Patrick's again finishing as runners up. A slight surprise though was that BUBO having won the first two seasons unbeaten lost three times this season. It was Heathfield University of Agriculture who ended their unbeaten run, beating BUBO 1-0 away on the fifth matchday. The other two defeats came towards the end of the season on matchdays 17 & 18 against Háskóllin í Vatnajavik at home and Saint Patrick's University away. The final team to qualify for the International University Challenge Championship is Háskóllin í Vatnajavik after Ollscoil Baile an Fheirtéaraigh and Universität Heltzburg dropped points against bottom side Prifysgol Landigoll in the final couple of matchdays, having both previously been ahead of Háskóllin í Vatnajavik prior to matchday 17.

Liventian Football League season 10

The Liventian Football League added two teams to the Second Division this season, with an Army United team representing the Liventian Army, and a combined representation team from the Liventian Navy and Air Force. A Football League Trophy was also introduced featuring all 14 league teams, with the teams split into two groups of seven with the top four from each group progressing to the knockout rounds.

For the first time, a University Championship was also introduced. Any student studying at the university involved could play for the team, but there was a limit of no more than two players over 23 registered for the season.

First Division
The shock of the season was that once-dominant Dover City couldn't keep their form of recent seasons up and finished three points short of safety in 7th place, ending up relegated to the Second Division for the first time since the new league was reformed.

HYDRO SUPER LEAGUE - SEASON FIVE (PART IV OF VI)

Clausura Tournament

MD1:

Chiquito 1-0 Bezieres
Fontvielle 2-0 Nord Energie
Valencia 0-0 Lili
Pumas 0-1 Eterna
Cerro 1-2 Marinos
Alligators 3-0 Slateport
Hamanos 1-1 Canalave
Vaud 0-1 Caimanes
Tannenberg 3-0 Alejandría
Pradera 1-0 Montreux

The second half of the season started, and Tannenberg beat Alejandría without any difficulty. The Apertura champion, Fontvielle Impact won at home, while the two "Big" teams from Metropolis started with victories. Eterna Stars won at Pumas' home stadium as well.

MD2:

Montreux 1-1 Chiquito
Bezieres 2-1 Fontvielle
Nord Energie 1-0 Valencia
Lili 2-3 Pumas
Eterna 1-1 Cerro
Marinos 3-3 Alligators
Slateport 1-0 Hamanos
Canalave 4-2 Vaud
Caimanes 1-1 Tannenberg
Alejandría 0-2 Pradera

With their victory at Alejandría's home, Pradera became the new leader, with 6 out of 6 points. The champion lost their regional derby, and every "Big" team tied, including Marinos and Metropolis Alligators, that starred a thrilling derby with six goals, three per team.

MD3:

Fontvielle 1-0 Chiquito
Valencia 1-2 Bezieres
Pumas 3-1 Nord Energie
Cerro 2-0 Lili
Alligators 1-0 Eterna
Hamanos 2-3 Marinos
Vaud 0-3 Slateport
Tannenberg 2-0 Canalave
Pradera 0-1 Caimanes
Montreux 4-1 Alejandría

Tannenberg are the new leaders after beating Canalave Dragons at the Olympic Stadium, and taking advantage of Pradera's loss to Caimanes. The Impact won their second match in this Clausura, and the two "Big" teams from Metropolis are escorting the "Citizens" with 7 points, the same number of points Tannenberg have.

MD4:

Montreux 1-0 Fontvielle
Chiquito 0-0 Valencia
Bezieres 2-0 Pumas
Nord Energie 1-1 Cerro
Lili 0-3 Alligators
Eterna 3-0 Hamanos
Marinos 1-0 Vaud
Slateport 1-1 Tannenberg
Canalave 2-0 Pradera
Alejandría 0-1 Caimanes

Metropolis Alligators, their arch-rivals Marinos and SC Caimanes are commanding the Clausura with 10 points after four matches. The Impact, Apertura champions, suffered an unexpected loss to Montreux, and AS Vaud and Alejandría lost their four match in a row, and are placed 19th and 20th respectively, without any points.

MD5:

Valencia 1-2 Fontvielle
Pumas 0-1 Chiquito
Cerro 1-0 Bezieres
Alligators 1-0 Nord Energie
Hamanos 2-0 Lili
Vaud 1-1 Eterna
Tannenberg 2-0 Marinos
Pradera 0-2 Slateport
Canalave 2-1 Alejandría
Caimanes 3-1 Montreux

Alligators and Caimanes are still in the lead with 13 points, but Tannenberg is making pressure over them, placed in third place, with 11 points. Fontvielle Impact and Eterna Stars, two teams supposed to fight for the top places in the standings, are reeling with 9 and 8 points respectively. Vaud tied, and Alejandría is the only team without any points in this Clausura. Smells like a B-League team here...

MD6:

Montreux 2-3 Valencia
Fontvielle 1-0 Pumas
Chiquito 1-2 Cerro
Bezieres 1-1 Alligators
Nord Energie 0-1 Hamanos
Lili 2-0 Vaud
Eterna 4-1 Tannenberg
Marinos 1-0 Pradera
Alejandría 0-3 Slateport
Canalave 2-1 Caimanes

Eterna Stars took revenge of the last defeats in the "National Derby" and humiliated Tannenberg 4-1. The Alligators are the sole leaders thanks to Caimanes' defeat in Canalave City. This was the surprise of this matchday, due to the fact that the "Dragons" are now third placed in the standings with 13 points, one point less than Metropolis Alligators.

MD7:

Pumas 1-0 Valencia
Cerro 0-0 Fontvielle
Alligators 1-0 Chiquito
Hamanos 1-3 Bezieres
Vaud 1-2 Nord Energie
Tannenberg 4-0 Lili
Pradera 1-2 Eterna
Alejandría 0-3 Marinos
Caimanes 2-2 Slateport
Canalave 1-1 Montreux

In a boring match, AD Cerro and Fontvielle Impact tied 0-0. This result forces both teams to improve their performance in next matchdays if they want to qualify for the Play-Off. Metropolis' "Big" teams are first and second placed in the standings, Marinos are now the Alligators' escort after their victory against the weak Alejandría, and the ties of the other teams in the top of the standings.

MD8:

Montreux 1-2 Pumas
Valencia 0-2 Cerro
Fontvielle 2-1 Alligators
Chiquito 0-0 Hamanos
Bezieres 2-1 Vaud
Nord Energie 0-1 Tannenberg
Lili 2-2 Pradera
Alejandría 1-3 Eterna
Marinos 0-1 Caimanes
Slateport
3-0 Canalave

Is that true? Five teams tied with the same points and sharing the first place? Definately, this can only happen in Valladares. Eterna Stars (+9), Tannenberg FC (+9), Slateport Bulls (+9), Metropolis Alligators (+8) and SC Caimanes (+5) are sharing the first place with the same 17 points. Bezieres, Marinos and Fontvielle Impact are lurking, just one point behind the leaders. And the Impact defeated the Alligators again: in the Apertura was 2-1 for the Impact as well.

MD9:

Cerro 2-2 Pumas
Alligators 3-1 Valencia
Hamanos 1-2 Fontvielle
Vaud 1-0 Chiquito
Tannenberg 1-1 Bezieres
Pradera 0-2 Nord Energie
Lili 1-2 Alejandría
Caimanes 1-1 Eterna
Canalave 1-0 Marinos
Slateport 3-2 Montreux

Slateport Bulls and Marinos Metropolis are now leaders with 20 points, after the respective ties of "Stars", "Citizens" and "Reptiles". The champion, Fontvielle Impact, approached the first place with their victory. Canalave Dragons defeated Marinos Metropolis and sent them to the tenth place, out of Play-Off places. Alejandría finally won in this Clausura.

MD10:

Montreux 1-2 Cerro
Pumas 0-2 Alligators
Valencia 1-0 Hamanos
Fontvielle 3-0 Vaud
Chiquito 1-2 Tannenberg
Bezieres 2-0 Pradera
Alejandría 2-1 Nord Energie
Lili 1-3 Caimanes
Eterna 1-1 Canalave
Marinos 2-0 Slateport

Metropolis Alligators is commanding the standings after ten matches, with 23 out of 30 points. The current Apertura champions, Fontvielle Impact, after an uneven start, are now in second place with 22 points. The fight for the eight berths to the Play-Off involves from Metropolis Alligators until Canalave Dragons at this moment. As for relegation issues, despite Alejandría and FC Lili winning three and two matches (respectively) so far in the whole season, that performance is not helping them to avoid relegation. In the next part of our summary, we'll know the eight qualified teams to the Play-Off and the three teams that will play the B-League the next season.

Collegiate Sporting Alliance, 1780 season

The CSA announced a temporary rule change to take effect for the next two seasons dealing with qualification to the IUCC. Due to a quirk in scheduling, there was not to be an IUCC between the 1780 and 1781 seasons [yes, astute observers, that means there's another season coming in the next 12 hours or so -ed], so this time around only the national champion would be guaranteed a berth in the next IUCC. The second- and third-place finishers would be given berths on a provisional basis, pending the results of the 1781 CSA season.

Right, then, here's your regular season:

Big West Conference
A very deep Big West picked up five tournament bids, which is pretty rare these days.

Isthmian Conference
CONTROVERSY in the Isthmian Conference! Fourth-place Bektys Coastal picks up a tourney invite with only seven wins, while nine-win and conference runner-up Isthmian stays home, as does third-place South Bektys. Also, the folks down at BTI, who won the conference the last two years, aren't going to like a losing record and a tenth-place finish one bit, and BSU winning the title just adds insult to injury.

Independents
This was the second season of play for the six independents, who would surely have been able to better their combined total of thirteen wins from last year, right? Not quite, as they end up with only twelve this time. And at least last time everybody won at least once; unfortunately, Darnai A&M was unable to maintain that standard.

The string of consecutive 16-over-1 upsets to start the tournament is extended to three thanks to Bektys Coastal upending Till. The third and fourth seeds also lost convincingly in the first round; seriously, do these rankings actually mean anything? In fact, there was only one match that didn't result in a shutout; lone SCC representative Astenast State managed to take Sirinis to penalties after a one-all draw, but the Wildcats came out on top.

(1) Till 0-2 (16) Bektys Coastal
(8) Riestre 0-2 (9) Highland
(5) Salle Southern 1-0 (12) Anhenir
(4) Chezlot 0-3 (13) NW Sumbobor
(6) Northern Darnai 2-0 (11) Virdys
(3) Bektys State 0-2 (14) Siellal
(7) Astenast State 1-1 (10) Sirinis (1-1 AET, 2-4 PKs)
(2) Narrows 2-0 (15) Speilers

Quarterfinals
All the favorites won. No, seriously, they did. But yeah, this is a pretty rare occurrence.

(16) Bektys Coastal 1-1 (9) Highland (1-1 AET, 2-4 PKs)
(5) Salle Southern 2-0 (13) NW Sumbobor
(6) Northern Darnai 3-1 (14) Siellal
(10) Sirinis 1-2 (2) Narrows

Semifinals
Salle Southern and Northern Darnai pick up wins to set up an all-directional-school, Big West versus East Coast final.

(9) Highland 1-2 (5) Salle Southern
(6) Northern Darnai 2-2 (2) Narrows (4-2 AET)

Third Place Playoff
Normally this match decides who goes to the IUCC, but this time around it's pretty much meaningless. But congratulations to Narrows anyway, I suppose.

(9) Highland 0-2 (2) Narrows

Final
Wow, an actual exciting final! Northern Darnai needs 120 minutes, but they pick up their first ever national title and a spot in the IUCC.

(5) Salle Southern 3-3 (6) Northern Darnai (3-4 AET)

Image
Northern Darnai advances to the IUCC. The other two entrants are yet to be determined.

Season 23

After a radical league overhaul in its first season back from hiatus, the United Islands League Championship continued down that path by adding six new clubs to the Third Division, all with foreign links. Two Tyoduuran clubs, which play in the nominally-independent island in Rushmore, have been formed to represent its links with Ad’ihan. Four foreign clubs have also started feeder teams in Ad’ihan — SC Lasft of Cafundéu, with the Riverston Golden Tigers; Mylfe CE of Vephrall, in the form of the Oldbridge Sabres; Raynor City United of Valanora's RCU Dz’ai; and Septentrionia's CS Ourseville 1093 starting CS 1093 MN, based in Modna Nord.

The six new teams are eligible for promotion and relegation within the league system, but will not play in the AFF League Cup, and should they ever find themselves in such a position, would be considered for UICA qualification only on a case-by-case basis.

The AFF League Cup underwent its traditional can't-decide-on-a-format change, with replays now taking place until a winner is found, with no extra time or penalties used until the semifinals (and no replay for the final).

The top three qualify for the TQCC. The fourth, fifth and sixth placed teams (depending on the winner of the League Cup) qualify for the Globe Cup, while the top three from the Second Division and the Third Division champion qualify for the SBCC.

There were many surprises this season, not least County Stanley's apparent resurgence since their heyday after they were first promoted to the top flight. Winning the AFF Silver Trophy by a clear eight points from defending champions Mountbatten Junction, at that point in the season many would have tipped them to go all the way and win it. The next surprise was the performance of newly-promoted T’chéy Park — fourth at the halfway stage clearly suggested they had the ability in them to go on and better County Stanley's record third place in their first year up. Protectorate United, meanwhile, were languishing down in 13th at this point, leaving questions asked about whether they had it in them.

Somehow, County Stanley threw away that eight point lead to finish 4th by the end of the season, a whopping ten points back from eventual champions Mountbatten Junction, who defended their title again. Given County Stanley actually led the Junction by three points after Matchday 27, their form over the last seven matchdays has clearly left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans. T’chéy Park also couldn't keep up their good run, fading away in the second half of the season to finish in the bottom half of the table. Protectorate United, meanwhile, tried their best to recover from their poor first half start, but only finished in 6th — barely enough for a Globe Cup spot, and even then only if the League Cup winners already qualified for the TQCC or GC through the league. Unfortunately for them, Oldbridge City, who finished 8th, won the cup, thus taking their GC spot away.

In the Second Division, both Dalinn Wanderers and Olympique Protectorat, once giants of the Ad’ihani game, failed to secure promotion back into the top flight. Harley County, in just their second professional season, win promotion to the big time by finishing third, while AFC Hatton become the first ex-Premier Division club to fall into the depths of the Third Division.

And so, for the eighteenth time, the West Zirconian National League. The story so far:

16      Bradley Hornets      Stanley United         Mort Park
17      Banks                Mort Park              Bradley Hornets
* now playing as Etruria

Banks are back. As are Moorcroft City, although expecting to be at the other end of the table. Let us see how they fared.

The now customary competition to be the last to taste defeat was won by Banks, who survived seven games before a 4-0 defeat at Bradley Hornets. By this time, Mort Park had a slender lead over Houghton Kestrels, as well as Banks and Bradley Hornets.

By half-way, Banks were top, leading Mort Park by a single point, with Bradley Hornets a further four behind. At the other end, Etruria and Sephton County were looking doomed, with Moorcroft City facing the playoff lottery. As it happened, Moorcroft City ended up relegated with Etruria, with Sephton going into the playoff.

With all that happening on the penultimate week, all eyes were on the top. Going into the last match, Stanley United led Banks by a point, with Mort Park a further point behind. (Bradley Hornets, in fourth, were out of the race.) Each had opposition with little to play for, Stanley away at Crompton, Banks away at St. Martin Athletic and Mort Park entertaining St. Andrew's.

The final results were:

Crompton Town 2-3 Stanley United
Mort Park 1-1 St. Andrew's
St. Martin Athletic 1-2 Banks

giving the Vikings their second title - no mean feat in a Banks-Hornets-dominated league.

Civil Service were the early pace-setters, showing their determination to bounce back up at their first attempt. Despite a small dip in form, they were still in the lead at half-time, with Currie, West Coast Angels and AFC Stanton close behind.

They held on until it mattered, being overtaken by Redwood Forest with only two matches remaining. Still, they were still in contention, and the two faced each other in the final game. The winner would win the league; a draw would hand it to Redwood.

The final score was an emphatic 5-0 win for Civil Service, with Redwood hanging on to second on goal difference.

  18  Stanley Athletic          34   6   3  25   43   83  -40   21

So Moorcroft City and Etruria are relegated, to be replaced by Civil Service and Redwood Forest. The playoff will be between Sephton County, AFC Stanton, Tîm Cymru and Hyland Town.

Following the decision to withdraw Taylor's Cross' Aeropag Invitational place, we put them forward for the next competition instead, hoping that they will not be treated in the same way next time.

That's it. Honest.

There was plenty to keep the nation's army of sports papers busy as the eighth incarnation of the SuperLiga kicked off. Reigning champions Sporting San Marquez eased into their stride with a 3 - 0 win at newly promoted Jaguarés but the post match press conference was dominated with questions regarding the future of coach José Felipe Cassumba Domingos, strongly linked with the vacant national coach position. Matchday one almost resulted in the season's first sacking as Deportivo Soluca were turned over 2 - 0 by unfancied Cartago Rojo at the ediraf. Deportivo boss Gabriel Vizcarra just about clung on, a good decision as it turned out. Across the city newly promoted Racing Soluca stunned perennial title challengers El Nacional 4 - 2 in the biggest of the day's upsets.

Six games in and the table was a happy sight for fans in the capitol as Deportivo continued the recovery from that shock opening day defeat with a fifth win on the spin to go top. Defensor's strong start continued away in Mercada while Ciudad Soluca won in Dunas and Racing held on at home to Jaguarés to give an all Soluca top four. Down in Larissa the inevitable happen as Sporting's 4 - 1 win in San Marquez against Machala Del Norte turned out to be Cassa's last in charge, the Marquezian stepping down to become Sargossan national coach.

The early stages of the TakilQuip Champion's Cup proved last kind to the nation's bigger clubs. El Nacional edged past Taeshani outfit Ojian Orangemen, 2 - 1 on aggregate, but Ciudad embarrassingly crashed out in the very first preliminary round, losing on away goals to modest Mackintosh Thistle Celtic. El Nacional's run ended one round later, comfortably dispatched by mega wealthy CMSC side Marquez-Onwere from neighbouring Candelaria And Marquez. Champions Sporting San Marquez advanced to the playoff round, the perks of having a bye I guess.

The Globe Cup also saw a quick exit for one of Sargossa's finest. Well technically it was Estrella Torreón but still. Poconese striker Edmundo hit the winner in Torreón against Tannenberg FC but the Professors exited on away goals. Deportivo Soluca nearly joined them following defeat in Somewhereistonia against Dinamo Karrakiv but two late goals from Javier Terán in Soluca levelled the tie and the hosts kept their nerves to go through to the eliminatory stage on penalties.

Back in the SuperLiga Sporting, stuttering in the league following Cassa's departure, unveiled their new boss. Since the nation's arrival into the international era the top sides had favoured foreign coaches and former El din Marbles and Arrigo Portuguese manager Carlos Panadero was odds on to take up the reins at the Estadio Silva. But Sporting's ridiculously wealthy owner Daniel Gil has always enjoyed playing by his own rules and instead headed to Porto Alegro to tease away the Azul's highly rated young coach Agustín Durán. The new man duly stopped the rot, overseeing an excellent 3 - 1 home win over Ciudad Soluca in his first game. Deportivo still led the way despite being held goalless in Cordova while surprise package Rubio Bayamo's fifth win in six kept took them level at the top.

Durán may have steadied the ship domestically but the return to TQCC action was a brand new challenge for the rookie boss. Fortunately playoff round opponents Veszprém offered scant resistance and were simply blown away, 7 - 1 on aggregate. There were mixed fortunes for Soluca duo Ciudad and Deportivo in the Globe Cup. TQCC drop outs Ciudad came through against West Zirconia's Stanley United on away goals to enter the qualifying stage. But Deportivo crashed out to Dawson Springs FC. Ciudad moved on into the group stage after a thrilling 7 - 5 aggregate triumph over Dancougar's Dynamo Kalinsk and fellow TQCC losers El Nacional joined them with a narrow away goals win against Four Towers of The Babbage Islands.

Domestically Deportivo were starting to slid with El Nacional taking over at the top and Ciudad edging past them into second. Sporting thrust themselves into the mix after matchday eighteen's win in Cartago and followed that up a week later with a thumping 4 - 0 win over the former leaders at the ediraf, dropping Deportivo down to fifth. Ciudad took first place with a home win over a Dínamo Maturín side mired in mid table. The lead was changing on a weekly basis as Sporting jumped past Ciudad and then in the next match were themselves overtaken by El Nacional. Sporting took it again, then El Nacional and then Ciudad as one of the most exciting title chases in history built momentum.

The exhausting battle at the top of the SuperLiga probably didn't help those clubs who still had international commitments. Sporting finished bottom of their TQCC group but still managed to hold mighty Petardos S/A in their own backyard. In the Globe Cup El Nacional fared even worse, losing five of their six group games. Not so Ciudad Soluca who finished top of Group J to set up a round of sixteen encounter with Vephrall's Oillid CE.

With eight games left El Nacional topped the league, but only ahead of Ciudad on goal difference. Just a point behind lurked reigning champions Sporting and Deportivo were still keeping pace in fourth. Then came what many saw as the decisive moment. Deportivo, largely overlooked in the title race despite being only two points off the lead, took on Ciudad in the Soluca derby. Vizcarra's side were magnificent and Terán and Jesús Vázquez both bagged a brace in their side's 5 - 1 victory. Suddenly they were third and that became second with El Nacional's defeat in Mercada a week later. Ciudad, distracted by the prospect of Cafundó do Juta in the Globe Cup (they'd lose. Obviously) quarters, were slipping fast but Sporting and El Nacional were still picking up the points. When the two sides fought out a 2 - 2 draw in San Marquez in the thirty fourth round of matches there was a chance for Deportivo to take first place for the first time since matchday seventeen. But pressure is a funny old thing and Soluca's second side collapsed in Dunas. Not that it really mattered as a Sporting slip in Jucaro gifted Deportivo top spot a week later.

Three games left and Sporting moved just a point off first place following victory in Mercade as El Nacional and Deportivo drew in Goza. And the reigning champions went top in the penultimate round of matches after a 3 - 1 home win over Cartago Rojo. Deportivo were held 3 - 3 at home by Alianza Jucaro and El Nacional's title hopes ended in Durgos. So there is was. One game to go, one point separating the teams in first and second place and what fixture do you suppose the computer had thrown up for the final round of matches? Of course, Sporting San Marquez against Deportivo Soluca at the Estadio Silva as the most exciting season in living memory headed for an explosive climax.

The champions took an early lead in front of a packed stadium in Larissa, Cafundéu's Marcinho firing in a suitably spectacular twenty five yarder but Sargossan international Vázquez brought Deportivo level with a sweetly struck freekick. In the second half the pendulum swung towards the capitol with Joaquín Bautista's low drive but Roberto Ordóñez headed home for 2 - 2. As the minutes ticked by the champion's were heading for a second successive title. Until, that is, António Olivera's loose pass gifted the ball to Roberto García who found Vázquez. The midfield maestro threaded a first time ball into the path of Javier Terán who held off Torres and fired low past Aaron Turner. It was a goal that knocked the stuffing out of the champions who could find no answer to it. The fulltime whistle went and Deportivo were SuperLiga champions for the very first time.

Elsewhere the only real result of note was El Nacional's shock 3 - 1 home reverse to Defensor. It meant Ciudad, 3 - 2 winners in Maturín, leapfrogged their great rivals right at the death to take the third TQCC spot and put huge pressure on Nacional's Nethertopian boss Otto van Belhamel. At the bottom, largely unnoticed, Jaguarés, Machala Del Norte and Atlético Almansa quietly dropped into the Segunda Liga.

Collegiate Sporting Alliance, 1781 season

The official ruling on IUCC qualification this go-around: just as the 1780 national champions were guaranteed a spot, so are the 1781 champions. If Northern Darnai successfully defends their title, then both the 1780 and 1781 runners-up will be admitted. (If Salle Southern ends up second again...eh, we'll figure it out when we get there.) Otherwise, there will be an additional playoff match between the two runners-up to determine the third IUCC entry.

Big West Conference
Defending national champions Northern Darnai are able to retain their conference title, so that's a good start. The rest of the conference doesn't look as good, though, as this time only two teams make the tournament compared with five last year.

The East Coast is this year's Big West, apparently, with an astounding four teams finishing in the final top ten and picking up at least nine wins. Razz, however, seem to be quite some distance removed from their conference-winning ways of just a few years ago, finishing bottom once again.

Much calmer than last year. Nobody can complain about being shafted by the selection committee this time, as you're not going to get into the tournament with just six wins. The appearance in the final top 25 really is reward enough for Isthmian.

Only one team is able to win more than eight games, but the Midland still gets four tournament bids? This can only end in tears.

Southern Crescent Conference
Well, the SCC had three teams finish in the final top 25 this time; that's an improvement. But still only one tourney bid, and this time it's the 13 seed instead of the 7. You really don't want to suffer the humiliation of having to use the conference champion autobid rule, but you're getting mighty close to that...

Independents
How the slani hell did Continental suddenly pull off a ten-win season?! Well, in theory it's really not too hard when you play four of the other five independents (all but Northern Riestre) and most of the bottom-dwellers in the six conferences. They did manage to hold Isthmian champs South Bektys to a single goal and even pulled off a draw with undefeated Lowland champs Northwest Sumbobor, so maybe there is some credibility. We'll find out in the tournament as they become the first independent to make the postseason.

National Championship Tournament

First Round
Okay, this is getting ridiculous. This is the fourth year in a row that the number one seed has been knocked out in the first round. If this keeps up, we're going to have teams deliberately tanking at the end of the season just to avoid the number one seed. Continental got their opportunity to make a case for the independents, and they blew it, losing to a pretty obscure and lower-seeded Till State outfit.

(1) NW Sumbobor 1-2 (16) Riestre Tech
(8) Narrows 2-0 (9) Sheoron
(5) Continental 0-1 (12) Till State
(4) Till 0-0 (13) Shentarong State (0-0 AET, 2-4 PKs)
(6) Northern Darnai 2-0 (11) Siellal
(3) Salle Southern 2-0 (14) Dettune
(7) South Bektys 2-2 (10) Bektys Coastal (2-3 AET)
(2) Calamen 1-2 (15) Military

Quarterfinals
Leave it to the 15-seed Military to be the only one to claim a result in the allotted 90 minutes. There's a reason these guys are going into the military; they know how to follow orders. During the extra time period, Northern Darnai apparently remembered that they're the defending champions and proceeded to put three into the Salle Southern net to put that one well beyond doubt. Shentarong State and Narrows, meanwhile, would need to go to penalties to get their wins.

(16) Riestre Tech 2-2 (8) Narrows (2-2 AET, 2-4 PKs)
(12) Till State 2-2 (13) Shentarong State (2-2 AET, 2-4 PKs)
(6) Northern Darnai 1-1 (3) Salle Southern (4-1 AET)
(10) Bektys Coastal 1-2 (15) Military

Semifinals
The Mountaineers breeze by Military to get back to the final. Could they actually defend their title?

(8) Narrows 1-3 (13) Shentarong State
(6) Northern Darnai 3-0 (15) Military

Third Place Playoff
Just like last year, this match is meaningless, but it'll go back to being worthwhile next season. At least it was a good game.

(8) Narrows 1-1 (15) Military (1-1 AET, 2-4 PKs)

Final
So close, so very, very close. But the Northern Darnai net bulged in the 83rd minute with the force of the strike that would ultimately unseat them. The ever-annoying chants of "S-C-C! S-C-C!" rang throughout the stadium as the fans of all twelve of the conference's schools crowned themselves national champions.

(13) Shentarong State 2-1 (6) Northern Darnai

IUCC Playoff
Well, this actually turned out to be unnecessary. The playoff was meant to be between the runners-up from the last two seasons, but since the 1781 runner-up, Northern Darnai, was already in by virtue of winning the national title the previous season, there wasn't much of a point. Salle Southern wins by default.

Shentarong State, Northern Darnai, and Salle Southern will participate in the next IUCC.

Prior to the announcement of this IUCC's setup, a group of 117 voters was chosen to select who would sponsor the next four editions of the tournament. (Why 117? Why not?) After almost seven minutes of deliberation, they returned with a verdict. By a vote of 61 to 56, Samseong was chosen over its only competitor, the Beningrad City Credit Union, as the official sponsor of the International University Challenge Championship.

International University Challenge Championship 24

Welcome to the twenty-fourth edition of the IUCC, the premier tournament for university football teams around the multiverse.

Initially, a total of 33 institutions from eleven nations were entered into this year's tournament, but tournament organizers quickly realized they didn't really have a suitable format to accommodate 33 entries. They could do 34, though, and coincidentally defending IUCC champions Snaith Maritime College had not finished within the top three in West Zirconia's league. So in addition to West Zirconia's normal three entries, Snaith Maritime are welcomed back as defending champions.

Fourteen of these 34 teams will be given byes directly to the group stage: two from each of the tournament founding nations (Ad'ihan, Dancougar, and Vephrall), two from host nation West Zirconia, and one from each other participating nation with the exception of Liventia. Due to Liventia's ties with Ad'ihan, it would not be allowed any automatically-qualifying teams; all three will participate in the qualifying stage instead. The remaining twenty teams will participate in the qualifying stage.

The qualifying round fixtures shall be drawn at random, with the exception that no association shall have both of its representatives face each other.

Rankings by association prior to IUCC24 (bold = founding member; blue = IUCC24 participant):
  1. West Zirconia - 187

THE TOP FLIGHT OF BURCHADINGER SINCE 1943

As the Burchadingan Super League reaches its 57th edition, the rivalries get stronger. For two years in a row, the once untouchable giants Star Bucharest have fallen to the now unbeatable Dynamo Dresden. 1988 Goberschit, champions in 1996 and 1997, were nearly relegated after a battle with Pretin Houbersh. 2010 promises to be an interesting season. And we take a look at the 3 teams touted to be champions.

Dynamo Dresden

Image

Dynamo Dresden are something of a success story. SG Dynamo Dresden are a Burchadingan football club, based in Dresden, Saxony. They were founded in 1950, as FC Dynamo Dresden, and became one of the most popular and successful clubs in Burchadingan football, winning eight league titles. However, the club's fortunes then began to tumble and eventually went bankrupt. In 2003, Billionaire Julien Martinovic bought what was by then just a "fun club". However, the Club immediately began to attract attention. In 2004, they were promoted to League 2, In 2005, they made it to League 1. And in 2006, they got promoted in to the Super League. Although the press touted they would be relegated, they were locked in a championship battle with 4 times champions Star Bucharest. Bucharest won that year, but only by 1 point. 2007 would be Dresden's year, unbeaten, they won the title by a margin of 18 points. They did it again last year, with a greater margin of 23 points. The team has some of the youngest players in the league, such as star Markus Klogh.

Star Bucharest

Image

Ever since the club was founded in 1974, Star Bucharest had always looked like a winner and today, more than half of the team come from the club. The team mainly relies on its experienced players, and unlike Dynamo Dresden, do not look towards the potential of youth players. This has often led to nearly disastrous occasions. When Dynamo Dresden were promoted in 2006, Bucharest's star players, Matthew De Mark and Henry Askew were retiring, coupled with injuries to Klaus Diefenbaker and Jorgen Faritol, the club struggled to win the league. In 2007 and 2008, the problem was not solved, and Dynamo Dresden went on to clinch the titles. This year however, the club has recruited two youngsters with potential, 21 year old Andreas Gretwich, and 17 year old Tremas Svensonn. Whether or not this will help, is yet to be seen.

VFB Leipzig

Image

The last time VFB Leipzig tasted silverware was in 1991. Back in the days where Burchadingan football was dominated by the now unknown Yori Halberstadt, Harking Rakvere, and Super Bucharest. Leipzig are well known for their Total Football. And their strategy has been very effective against many smaller teams. However, against teams like Dresden and Bucharest, the tiring Total Football tactics fail the team. This year, the team will not want to miss out on winning, and the players and fans, do not want to take any team lightly.

The League this year

This year, the following teams will participate.

1. Abal Seirmare
2. Athletic Tolger
3. Bering Bucharest
4. Bruch Kalemn
5. Berlin University
6. Dreidberg FC
7. Dynamo Dresden
8. Dynamo Stuttgart
9. Enfield-Sparing
10. Frankfurt
11. SG Goberschit
12. 1988 Goberschit
13. Vebel Hoersche
14. SG Hamburg
15. SG Hapsburg
16. SG Sigmaringen
17. Star Bucharest
18. VFB Leipzig
19. VFB Stuttgart
20. Racing Zoidberg

So... another Osarius round-up. The 2178-79 season is over. Did Firewood City reclaim their status as King's League champions? Have Burningham City managed to pick up some silverware, or has the drought continued? Have Turic truly shown an ability to play with the big boys or was it just a fluke?

Starting with the King's League...

Interestingly enough, neither the title race, nor the relegation fight went "to the wire" really. Everything was over at the end of matchday 36.
It had looked as though Hastmead, who had a dreadful first half of the season - just two wins and 12 points at the halfway mark - were going to pull of a miraculous recovery and survive, but their unfortunate 1-0 defeat at the hands of Paper Tree Town, in the high altitude Papyrus Stadium ultimately sealed their fate. At the other end of the table, that same week, Firewood City reclaimed their championship status by dispatching Burningham City 3-1 in The Cauldron to go ten points clear at the top of the table.

The following week, Greeningham's failure to win at Highport, and Burningham's defeat at home to Kronkow cemented a third place for surprise outfit Renneville. This result would also guarantee one of the two sides would be missing out on global competition this season, as Callisto City had won the Corradini Cup and thus earned one of the nation's Globe Cup berths. Whoever finished fourth in the league would have to hope that Firewood won the OFA Cup against Hollybrent.

The final day of the season, therefore, lacked the drama of last year. However, there were a couple of entertaining matches to be seen. Hastmead Diamante sold out tickets to their final game at Black Patch Park, where they hosted last season's champions, Grasshoppers Turic. The diamonds made Turic work for the win, finally succumbing to their superior quality in a thrilling 3-4 defeat. Elsewhere, Firewood's second string - practically the same one they used in the Corradini Cup last season - fell 2-3 to Kart Hago away, in a very open, free-flowing game of football. It seems that the youngsters havent quite inherited their seniors' ability to completely dominate games yet - something evidenced by Firewood picking up the highest home and away wins this season; they destroyed Callisto 5-0 away, and tore Kronkow apart in The Cauldron, garnering a 6-1 victory - but they showed signs of promise with their capable goalscoring abilities as well as the several chances they carved out. It would appear that Willem Hamel has no intention of letting his side slip out of the title frame any time soon.

The final King's League table looked like so:

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Firewood City 38 25 6 7 91 43 48 81 TQCC
2 Grasshoppers Turic 38 21 11 6 75 49 26 74 TQCC
3 Renneville United 38 20 9 9 65 53 12 69 GC
4 Burningham City 38 18 11 9 58 38 20 65
5 Greeningham City 38 18 10 10 78 62 16 64
6 King's Guard Sporting 38 17 10 11 69 57 12 61
7 Hollybrent 38 17 8 13 47 42 5 59 GC
8 Utica United 38 16 10 12 62 63 -1 58
9 Trothwands Evolution 38 15 10 13 59 59 0 55
10 Wellmont United 38 14 8 16 42 57 -15 50
11 Muirford Athletic 38 13 10 15 54 49 5 49
12 Highport Athletic 38 13 10 15 61 65 -4 49
13 Callisto City FC 38 14 7 17 54 67 -13 49 GC
14 Hamtown Athletic 38 12 12 14 43 43 0 48
15 Blacktube Village 38 13 5 20 42 49 -7 44
16 Paper Tree Town 38 11 11 16 36 47 -11 44
17 Kart Hago 38 11 9 18 51 64 -13 42
18 Rapid Hearthlands 38 8 8 22 38 71 -33 32 R
19 Hastmead Diamantes CFC 38 7 10 21 51 71 -20 31 R
20 Kronkow United FC 38 5 9 24 40 67 -27 24 R

As it turned out, Hollybrent actually defeated the league champions 2-0 in the final. Thats two defeats by a 2-0 scoreline in cup finals in consecutive years. Two results hardly constitutes a pattern, but still... Firewood fans must be pretty miffed, eh?

The Corradini Cup was the usual minefield of upsets, surprises and such. Firewood were dispatched in the third round by a convincing Weestock display, while Rapid Hearthlands eliminated Turic with a 2-0 home win. Elsewhere, Greeningham and Burningham fought to a narrow result in favour of the former, who played at home.

At this point, you'd be forgiven for thinking Greeningham would win the cup, as the only remaning top four side in the competition. They helped that assumption with an 8-2 drubbing of Hastmead Diamante over two legs in the next round. How it progressed from there is shown below...

Quarter Finals
Blacktube Village 1-2 Greeningham City
Greeningham City 0-1 Blacktube Village (1-1 AET)
Aggregate: Blacktube Village 2-3 Greeningham City

Yoru Yoru Town FC 3-4 Callisto City FC
Callisto City FC 2-2 Yoru Yoru Town FC
Aggregate: Yoru Yoru Town FC 5-6 Callisto City FC

Fort Mare FC 1-1 Muirford Athletic
Muirford Athletic 2-3 Fort Mare FC
Aggregate: Fort Mare FC 4-3 Muirford Athletic

King's Guard Sporting 2-0 Renneville United
Renneville United 1-1 King's Guard Sporting
Aggregate: King's Guard Sporting 3-1 Renneville United

Semi Finals
Greeningham City 3-1 King's Guard Sporting
Fort Mare FC 1-2 Callisto City FC

So that set up the final. Greeningham were the clear favourites, understandably... however, like Firewood before them last season...

2178-79 Corradini Cup Final
Greeningham City 1-1 Callisto City FC (1-2 AET)

Interestingly enough, it was Everton McNeill, on loan from Burningham City, who netted the winner. A goal which would ultimately help to condemn his own side to a season without the extra TV revenue global competition brings.

In the other cup competition which yields a Globe Cup berth, things got really messy toward the business end. In the last eight, only two of the top ten sides in the country remained. They would ultimately face off in the final, one of them the fearsome Firewood City, the other, not so fearsome Hollybrent.

In another underdog story, Firewood were conquered. Although, all the signs had been there. In the semi final, they had needed a replay to get past Delsfield United. In the quarter finals, Sparta Yurendam very nearly beat them in The Cauldron. Had it not been for two second half goals from Captain Marvel and The Wren, Firewood may have suffered the indignity of being eliminated at home to a team quite literally not in their league.

2178-79 OFA Cup Final
Firewood City 0 - 2 AFC Hollybrent

The final itself played out well, with Renaldo Aguilar tormenting Firewood's full backs more effectively than Bonriou and Watson could torment Hollybrent's. As it turned out, it was Aguilar himself who scored both goals, picking up the man of the match award.

The Royal league was equally as boring as the King's League, really. The title was wrapped up on Matchday 35, when Clefton travelled to Violia and won 1-0. That same day, Weestock drew with Masaka, confirming who would be in the playoffs. No drama at all on the final day. Not even an exciting match, really. All boredom aside, the league finished like so:

Priesthood of Baal make a return to the top flight after their woeful relegation a couple of seasons ago, while Junipa clung onto a playoff berth in the hopes of making an instant return. At the other end of the table, Delsfield's spectacular fall from grace continued, as they finished bottom of the league and drop into the third tier next season.

A summary of the minor leagues and the Mount Crown League will be included in the next edition.

First, the Landau Institute league, called Láifódi. The Laifódi (Landau Institute Football Dispute) involves all the teams from inside the place, including teams composed by doctors, patients or simple workers of the Institute. All the teams play each other twice and, in the end, the team with more points win the league. Simple. There is no relegation, as there isn't a second division. The war hasn't affected the league, as the Landau Institute is being well defended, and maybe because even with the Institute falling, most of the facilities are located underground, so the games can be played without problems.

The final positions were the following (top 3 to TQCC, 4th, 5th and 6th to Globe Cup):

ESTRESSE INTENSO'S COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

Previous champions:
Season 1 - Academia Acropolis
Season 2 - Escritórios Macedo
Season 3 - Academia Acropolis
Season 4 - Academia Acropolis
Season 5 - Camisa Dez
Season 6 - Academia Acropolis
Season 7 - Camisa Dez
Season 8 – Camisa Dez

The country championship involves the 10 best teams of the country of Estresse Intenso (this means the teams from outside the Landau Institute). There are many teams in Estresse Intenso, but most don't have organization, so the league is composed only by the top 10. Teams play each other six times, and the best after these 54 rounds is the champion. Bottom two are relegated... oh wait, everything has changed.

The war in Estresse Intenso changed all the structure of the league. Now there isn't relegation or promoted, the teams that wish to play the league enter, in a first-come policy of the organizers, an independent group with love for football. Even in the middle of chaos, this group is able to manage to guarantee the security of the players and a more-or-less friendly attitude of the teams in the game. Thanks to this, the league survived, with a small structure change.

As it became impossible for teams to travel a lot without getting its players killed, and even more diffcult for teams to constantly play against their enemies, now the Country Championship has a preliminary stage with four divisions, each representing one of the four major groups of Estresse Intenso: Office Buildings, Gangs, Local Citizens and Foreigners. They play with the same format of the former main league of Estresse Intenso, with top two going to the last stage, when these eight teams play each other twice, to finally determine the champion of the country. The inaugural season of the new style worked well, and applicants are already being accepted for the next edition.

Top 4 win a chance to dispute the SBCC, the only international competition available for them (as the TQCC and GC are reserved for Láifódi teams). See the final standings of the league:

So, season eight and everything is fucked up. We have loads of new teams that need to be integrated at the end of the season all making a mess of everything as well as a bomb hitting a factory in the recent war. The said factory produced the league tables that were used previously, so for this season (and hopefully only this season) the league tables will have somewhat less information. Still, we will persevere!

Bit of information here, there are four new leagues/league areas that will be added into the Somewhereistonian liigas. Each of these leagues will get a number of places in each current division in the Somewhereistonian league system, the number depending on how good the leagues are thought to be. This will lead to mass relegations and the creation of a new fourth division; the Neljaliiga (sponsorship bidding for the Neljaliiga is open).
New teams to join divisions (in order of when the names were generated, roughly):

Meistriliiga:
Volodiscow Resistance [Ida Balak]
Balakka Vanguard [Ida Balak]
Oaków Lightening [Oakow]
Vaska FK [Oakow]

Esiliiga:
Dinamo Oaków [Oakow]
Volodiscow Olimpiskais [Ida Balak]
Irka FK [Irk]

Koliliiga:
Mahilyow FK [Ida Balak]
Rinsk SK [Ida Balak]
Baranavičy FBK [Ida Balak]
Dinamo Mazyr [Oakow]
Spartak Kobryń [Oakow]
Torpedo Tyra [Oakow]
Kõrvaline Isik Kabs [Et Kab (now part of Kabano)]
Irka Kesklinn [Irk]

Neljaliiga:
Oaków Donkeys [Oakow]
Rushmore Commercial [Klaipaada]

More teams will join the Neljaliiga from these areas, with their names being made up when they are needed.

The purchase of Ian Betts of Krytenia and Brieuc Mercœur of Oberour Ar Moro may not have won them the title this season, but the pair have certainly added to the goal tally this season, Atlantas really tore up the other teams, with scorelines such as 11-0 and 12-1 against Olimpiskais Kaljak as well as 9-1 and 10-0 thrashings of Silute and Hawks Academy during the season. Truly this team dominated this season and have come out as more than deserved winners. Metalurgs may have been good through the season but they were simply no match for the champions, who must now be looking to finally get to the TQCC group stage and beyond it.

Metalurgs still pushed for the title though, finishing second quite comfortably. It may be slightly premature to call as yet, but it looks like the old big two (Qasarian Sparta and Dinamo Karrakiv) have been replaced by a new big two as the originals are now looking to become regular Globe Cup qualifiers. Kazys Xentolov seems to have had surprisingly few bigs from overseas, given that the youngster scored another 34 goals this season with 13 assists. He is quite simply the best striker in the league, even if he struggles to get a first eleven place in the national team. He has scored the most goals in the past four seasons I think. The all time top scorer in the Meistriliiga and most goals in a season. This guy is amazing, perhaps the $25 million price tag put on the youngster by his club and his happiness to stay has been what has put clubs off.

Ventspils Redwings are continuing to struggle financially as they drop from third in the league to seventh, only above their historic rivals, Bluewings, on goal difference. Failure to make the Globe Cup and strains on the club's finances mean that they club are definitely going to be selling players before next season. Koltelcia will take the extra place in the Globe Cup instead, the regular top-half team find themselves in fifth behind the new and old big twos.

Qasarian City put in another good league showing, just not good enough to get those international spots. Newcomer ISC Rig made a good debut season in the top division, coming ninth. As for the bottom of the league, well there were five relegated teams this season. No one particularly unsurprising. Silute's long term struggle to keep up has finally ended, with the club now probably having to sell players that they worked so hard to be able to afford.

Vephraller Tririsec e Foutbill
(and related competitions)
1780 season

Due to organizational issues and a surprise lack of funding, both the Vephraller Kustriin e Foutbill and Prime Minister's Cup ceased operation prior to the 1780 season. The Globe Cup berth normally awarded to the VKF winner has been transferred to the Commonwealth Cup as a result.
