AMW: An Introduction

A Modern World (AMW) is a NationStates roleplaying community, founded long ago in the mists of time before any of us had suffered through Jolt. It was created when a number of players (led by the venerable Dra-pol), dissatisfied with the billion-person populations and fluid geography that characterized a lot of NS roleplay, came together to try something different: a more realistic world, where political maneuvers and trade negotiations were more common than total wars, where players could look at a map and know where a country’s mountains and resources were located, where the cultures of states and relationships between them could be developed over the long term.

A Modern World was the result.

Rules to Live By

In addition to the usual NS guidelines, there are a few rules which make AMW what it is:

Geography: The geography of A Modern World is the geography of the real world. Each claim occupies a section of the world (sometimes corresponding to a real country, but often not), and adopts the geographic features, natural resources, and climate of that area.

A few clarifying points:

Cities and Infrastructure: While geography is set, the existence and locations of settlements and roads/railways/hydroelectric dams/etc are not, and can be moved around (within reason... a city located a thousand miles from any sources of water will need to overcome this problem before it can really be considered viable).

Natural Resources: Due to the difficulty determining reliable figures for past eras, natural resources are based on those currently available in the real world... a claim in Oman will have 5.5 billion bbl of oil even if the state occupying the lands has been a tribal society with Stone Age tools and no drilling equipment.

Human-Engineered Geography: Where geography has been shaped to a large extent by human hands, these added features are not inherently included in a claim... Panama is not automatically assumed to have a canal unless a claim explains how it was built in the context of AMW. Likewise, human-engineered features may exist in places where they do not in reality (such as a trans-American canal through Nicaragua) provided their existence can be acceptably explained.

Population: Rather than the populations listed for our NS nations, in AMW we use the populations of the real-life territories that our states occupy. Where such territories occupy the borders of a real state, we use numbers from the CIA World Factbook. As many AMW states do not follow existing borders (an approach we encourage!), other sources must often be found, preferably census data, to determine specific population numbers for a territory.

Economy: The economy of a state in AMW is dictated neither by its NS nation page nor by that of the real-life territories it occupies. Instead, it is determined in a rather free-form manner, based on economic systems, foreign trade relations, resources, and market demands. A $47,000 per-capita GDP stands as the highest in our world (aside from a few micro-states), and even it is a rather unique presence, with most economies existing on the mid-to-low end of the scale.

Technology: A Modern World is (as one might guess) a world of modern technology. Essentially, the rule is that if a technology is not in-service at the present time, it does not exist in AMW. Thus an air-to-air missile designed along the lines of the AIM-120 (in service) could exist in AMW, while one along the lines of the MBDA Meteor (in development) or the photon torpedo (imagined-future) would not.

Biology: The AMW Technology rule obviously applies to things like clone armies and cybernetic implants, but it ought also be noted that biological developments in the real world also apply some restrictions to AMW. One can have humans in a broad range of shapes and sizes, but no elves, no Klingons, no sparkly vampires. Extinct species remain extinct, and existing species are all we’ve got to work with (so no dinosaurs, dodos, or tartan-breasted robins).

History/Culture: An AMW claim is not tied to the history, culture, language, etc of the territory claimed. Some of our players have chosen to play states which could be thought of as alternate histories for countries that exist in reality, while others go an entirely different route (such as an ancient Celtic state in Eastern Europe, or a unique Drapoel culture on the Korean peninsula). AMW players look back and seek to mesh their respective histories together, creating centuries of background rather than a sudden appearance in the world, and the sum total is a rich experience (and one quite different from ‘real’ history).

Non-Player Countries (NPCs): While we're always trying to ensure our world's map is full, there will likely exist areas where no player has claimed a state in A Modern World. To avoid questions, conflicts, and disputes, such NPC areas exist as blank spaces, marked on the map with 'Here be Dragons'. This means that existing players may not involve such countries in their histories or RPs, ensuring that a new claimant to the states will not be bound by pre-existing events and activities.

Joining AMW:

AMW is always looking for new members interested in the sort of world we’re trying to build. If you’re not sure just what our world is like, we suggest giving the first few posts in this thread a read, and perhaps looking around the forums for some of our RPs (usually marked with an [AMW] tag).

To make a claim, we ask you to post in this thread, telling us which territories your claim would cover, along with a brief overview of what your country would be like in terms of culture, politics, and economy. If you’ve picked up some AMW history, indicating where you think your state would fit into it would be helpful, though if not existing players can help out with suggestions. We also ask for a few samples of your roleplay, so we can get an impression of what sort of player you are. If you’re new to RP, or if you feel your previous work isn’t characteristic of what you’d want to bring to AMW, we suggest writing up a small sample RP post based on your claim... your head-of-government discussing the domestic situation with his cabinet, two friends chatting over a dinner of the local cuisine at the end of their work day, a border guard dealing with the monotony-punctuated-by-panic of his daily patrols, etc.

Once we receive that initial claim, the process begins. The pipeline from claim-to-member is a loose and winding thing... various AMW players will comment on the claim, pointing out problems or possibilities, and you may be asked to make changes or to expand upon certain aspects. Once your claim has been accepted by the players in the territories immediately surrounding it, and by a few of our veteran members, we’ll ask you to post a more detailed reference factbook, either here on the NS forums or on our off-site reference forum, where we can discuss the details of the claim and make sure everything is in order. Unless there are major objections, after that you’re in!
Don’t get discouraged if it seems to be taking some time to have your claim approved... typically you can expect to wait a week or two before getting the go-ahead. Think of the slow pace as a test of your long-term commitment to AMW ^_^.

It ought be noted that A Modern World is not a pick-up-and-play group... AMW threads are closed to non-members.

Useful Links

AMW Big Discussion Thread: A hefty thread here on the NS forums, which can be used for general questions, comments, and out-of-character discussion.

A Modern World (region): An NS region for AMW nations, for easier communication and to compare (irrelevant-to-AMW) World Census rankings. Joining is not mandatory for membership... a number of members aren’t present in the region, and a few non-members reside there as well.

AMW Off-Site Forum: A non-NS forum which we use to post factbooks, discuss possible RPs, engage in out-of-character banter and witty repartee, etc. As with the region, membership in the forum is useful but not mandatory... you could carry out all needed discussions on NS via regular posts and telegrams without much trouble.

IRC: For those craving instant gratification, AMW maintains an IRC channel (#amw on Esper.net) for chat and discussion. Information on connecting to it can be found here.

Old AMW Applications Thread: A long and cluttered read, in case anyone needs to reference previous applications.

Brief History of the Modern Era in AMW

[A short and woefully incomplete summary, which manages quite effectively to miss all important details].

At the close of the Second World War, the world seemed poised on the verge of new conflict... in Asia, Imperial Yashima had been forced to abandon its conquests in southeast Asia and accept the primacy of the Royal Navy in the Pacific, while in Europe Hitler and the Nazis had been defeated by an alliance of states whose most powerful members were the British Empire and Kieven Rus’.

Even before the war had ended, those two powers had already been preparing for a future conflict over dominance in Europe, and perhaps the world: the two sides had rushed forward in a race from east and west for the heart of Germany, and afraid they might have been bogged down the British had employed the world’s first atomic bomb against the German city of Dresden to bring about a more speedy surrender.
The rivalry between London and Kiev quickly developed into the conflict known as the Cold War. Political and ideological lines were drawn... on one side, the British Empire, and many powers in North America (Florida, California) and Western Europe (Germany, Tord), who held generally to a ‘capitalist’ line of unfettered markets, secularism, and electoral democracy. On the other, Kiev, following a line of feudal social and economic structures, and religious presence in political life, supported by much of eastern Europe (Geletia, Cassanos, Tsalland), which were reformed in its own image following the defeat of the Nazis. The ideological principles were loose, however... Britain and many of its allies were led by monarchs, and others by those with strong religious convictions, while some powers siding with Kiev sported free markets and parliaments, regional and historical factors often more important than shared ideals in determining where battle lines were drawn. The blocs were also rather informal affairs, webs of bilateral treaties and verbal understandings, and only in the past few years have efforts to formalize such arrangements with multinational alliances such as NATO emerged.
Regardless of their ideological purity or cohesion, the Cold War was very real, the leaders of each side having accumulated nuclear arsenals sufficient to destroy the other. The anticipated global war never came, however, the conflict carried out instead via small proxy wars, the cat-and-mouse games of subhunting and air interception, and technical achievements such as a race for space. Still, there has been no real conclusion, and while today tensions are not as high as they have been in the past, military divisions continue to face each other in strength across shared borders.

In the Cold War between feudalists and capitalists, the communists have made a rather poor showing. At the close of the Second World War, Asia was swept by a wave of revolutions, socialism having become closely tied with nationalism in local struggles against Yashiman imperialism. Yet, this initial rush was not followed by world revolution: some socialist states collapsed under the weight of their own errors (such as in Indonesia), while a ferocious war on the Dra-pol peninsula in 1950-53, between the communist north and Yashima (which still occupied the south), showed many revolutionaries that they could not overcome the dangers of the world alone, and they attempted to side with the lesser of two evils by forming a Popular Front with the British-aligned world against the Kieven bloc. The Progressive International (Progintern) is an organization of the parties who took that path.
The Popular Front did not sit well with many revolutionaries unwilling to delay the struggle against capitalism. Perhaps the most active example emerged in the Bedgellen Democratic Republic, formed after the Kiev-backed Prince of Geletia was ousted in the 1980s.

And now that all the paperwork is done...

Better late than never: a new recruitment thread for A Modern World, leaving behind a great deal of clutter and hopefully making everything easier and clearer for prospective and veteran members alike.

To start, a few things holding over from the previous thread: A bit of border fiddling from existing members...
- Nova Gaul was looking to include Malta in the Papal States, which seemed to be accepted, so long as it isn’t already part of Gurg’s British Empire.
- Somewhereistonia wanted to drop Kuwait from his claim and replace it with Cabinda (Angola). This would be a slight reduction in size, and would seem to make a bit more sense geographically... not sure if dropping Kuwait includes Bahrain, but that would probably be the best way to go... if we’ve also lost Arabian Oil, we’ve room for three or four oil states on the Arabian peninsula.
- Crooked Beat (LRR) wanted to shift his claim a little bit westward, freeing some of Algeria in favour of Morocco... I don’t see any issues with the idea, but given its not a particularly massive claim anyhow, it might be easier just to add the rest of Morocco to Avarga as it stands.

Pending Applications

Burgov
Territory: Congo
The sample RP provided is the sort of thing we asked for, and I’m certainly ready to approve the claim... we can work out histories and details once we’ve gotten to see a factbook. One uncertainty, though, is just which Congo is being claimed... the Republic of Congo, or the Democratic Republic formerly known as Zaire?

Esperantujo 2
Territory: Sulawesi, Nia Tenggara, Maluku, East Timor, New Guinea

Jungastia
Territory: Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia)

-Lorraine-
Territory: Northern Italy, Switzerland

Tiurabo
Territory: Honduras, El Salvador
Certainly seems an interesting claim, though there seem a few details to be worked out with Florida before everything is good to go.

OK, I have a few ideas rattling around, let's see what people think:

1. The Scandinavian Confederacy.
Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland
This would be a liberal parliamentary democracy with a small clutch of figurehead type royals. Each nation would technically be independent of each other, but would cooperate through an internal alliance to act as though they were one in foreign policy. They would be characterized by a fairly secularized Lutheran culture, with religiosity being about as important is the USA, but with the bent of their background and culture. Further, they would remember the Winter War and the impact of the invasion of the Tsars, as well as the Nazi invasions, which provided the political impetus for their banding together. Militarily, they would be focused upon defence against Tsarist invasion, for obvious reasons.

2. Imperial Portugal
Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Sri Lanka, Panama (Venezuela, Guyana, French Guyana, Suriname, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi)
They took very seriously the Tordesillas Treaty, which divided the world between the Portuguese and the Spanish, and much like the British Empire, has managed to survive, after a fashion, into the modern world. I think that they shall be a Constitutional Monarchy, with a meddling monarch (much like Victorian England) and a fairly powerful aristocracy, but at its heart a parliamentary nation. They would be aggressively colonial, and the claims I put in brackets are areas that we lay a total claim of submission to. The capitol would be in Portugal, of course, but the balance of power would have shifted to Brazil.

3. Pan-African Union
Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Togo, Sierra Leonne, Chad
This would be a union led by strong-man dictator and delusionally religious Martin Umbatu. He will have ascribed to a Africanised perversion of the Pentecostal faith deeply imbued with visions and witchcraft that leads him to believe that his native Nigeria is destined to rule all of Africa. He will have come to power in a quasi-religious military coup, which is being supported by hordes of his followers in the religious community. His followers are deeply loyal, and fanatically aggressive in their proselytization. This is how he controls the nations that he has conquered in the last twenty years since his rise to power, as one after another, starting with Benin, he invaded first with this strange religion and then with his troops, who were often greeted as liberators. He sees all white people as essentially spiritual devil-men, and all Africans that do not pay him homage as traitors to God. This is all funded by his vast oil and diamond wealth.

4. Coalition States
Panama, Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, French Guyana, Guyana, Suriname
This is a predominantly white and European culture that has set up shop in South America. Fleeing various strange governments that were cropping up all over the world, 88 years ago (1922), a cabal of powerful businessmen and political leaders decided to attempt a coup in Brazil, while others set up in the surrounding nations. Soon, using their wealth and influence, they had incited a civil war in Brazil, which raged starting in 1929, and by 1924 had spread to include all of the nations in the above claim, some against and some for the cabal. Of course, with the rise of Fascism and the impending start of WW2, no one could afford to do much of anything about it, and when the campaigns of genocide started to occur in 1938, they were a footnote in an otherwise awful time. Following WW2, a massive influx of freebooting soldiers from all sides poured new fuel on the conflict, but it was the core of the Afrikaaners Korps. and some of their friends whom had absconded with all the Nazi national reserves, along with the collected/stolen wealth of several nations that escaped to the area and joined the cabal that really decided things. With the Allies cleaning up in Europe and the war in South America by that time being accepted as an ongoing fact, no one really understood what was happening until it was too late. Entire Nazi divisions, with planes, bombers, escaped naval resources, and escaping soldiers flooded the area until the tide began to turn. With the new veterans and all of the gold, they were able to secure a speedy victory, just as the Allies were beginning to put together what had happened, and once peace was achieved, in 1951, a new nation came into being. It is marked by being an oppressive regime, with a special hatred for the Jews, atheistic, and aggressively xenophobic. They have a burgeoning military and arms trade, but literacy is restricted to the elite 20% of the population, with only the Spanish, Portuguese, and Northern Europeans being enfranchised citizens, but especially the Northern Europeans. They are led by their second head of the National Workers' Party of the Americas, Karl Prosek, known as "El Lider," or "El Comandante." His father served in his position and won the war as its Commander, and his son, Joseph, is the Head of the Propaganda Department.

It is excellent to have you back, Quinn, I must say, but I'm a little uncomfortable about the size of those proposals. Brazil, for instance, or Nigeria alone, would, given the present state of AMW, seem completely sufficient, and such sweeping claims would effectively close-off large parts of the globe to potential claimants, when, in my estimation at least, a perfectly viable nation could be made out of a smaller chunk of territory.

Anyway, make of that what you will.

On the subject of Morocco, I certainly see what Spyr is saying, but I suppose I'd prefer a smaller claim. Algeria plus Morocco would give me a population of close to 70 million, and that is rather more than I'd like. From a convenience standpoint, though, I can understand the problems inherent in claiming a jumbled collection of tiny administrative regions, so I'll try to rationalize that side of things in the near future. Also, so there's no question, Avargan Sardinia includes all the Sardinian islands as well.

Okay Quinn, my thoughts on your proposals. I will start by saying that in all but one of them you seem to pick nations that will give you a very large population; is there any specific reason for that or is it just because those nations seemed like a good foundation to build on? A couple of the ideas could easily lose some of the listed nations and be just as viable, while leaving decent land for newer players.

EDIT: Just seen TCB making the same point :P

The Scandinavian Confederacy sounds interesting and reminds me a bit of Cass's 'union of two nations', the European players would have more to say on it but to me it looks like it has potential.

Imperial Portugal. I think the Soviet Commonwealth of Tamil Eelam controls part of Sri Lanka so you'd be ripe for conflict there. In Africa, you'd hold territories either side of me and you'd apparently claim that a significant part of my lands should be submissive to you (even though your colonial empire never held them), which would not go down well with the Rhodesian government. There are more than a few potential allies for you as well though. It could well cause a lot of conflict; you'd have two (possibly three depending on Burgov's claim) neighbours in Africa who could well fight to get rid of you for their own reasons, never mind the fun of Soviet guerillas. If the Empire is Catholic, would they be able to reconcile their ambitions on Rhodesia with the fact that Rhodesia is very close to the Papacy? It would be interesting, to say the least.

Pan-African Union. Sounds very feasible, and would add another mad dictator to Africa. Not sure how many allies you'd get though. It could, again, unite a lot of states against you. The Pan-African Union might actually see Africa getting together just to try and silence such a large potential threat; at 200 million people, you'd be the largest nation in Africa. It would depend on how many devout followers there are and just how rich the country is as a whole.

Coalition States. Would occupy a lot of South America. Escaped Nazis would provide some very interesting RPs, as nations who may have fought against Germany in WWII might well be partial to the Coalition States. Questions include: what sort of demographics would the state have? Are there considerably more Europeans than in RL, and if so how many? What's your relationship with the Inkas next door (as in why haven't you crushed them yet, because it sounds like the Coalition could cause them serious problems).

Deeeeefinately not. Way, way WAY too big a claim to all four. Only one that has merit is the one in Northern Europe due to the fact that bit of land never seems to shift or most of the players vanish under mysterious circumstance.

I’ll second that it’s great to have you back Quinn.

IMHO I think option one would suit you best, although IIRC someone did make a claim on Iceland I believe. But, um, everyone knows those Swedes can be a bit boring, just watch a Bergman film.

If you did want some more excitement option two might be your best bet, although given size and all that you might wish to cut Brazil out of the equation. And Sri Lanka would place you right along some Igovian rabble rousers, so that would be fun too. Also you’d be the parent state of the Trade Federation, which speak Portuguese and owns the Nicaragua Canal, plenty of room for RP and history there. All in all on two you’d be right in the middle of a number of very active states.

TBH I'd hack out Brazil, Mozambique and Angola also, we can't suddenly drop a near-superpower into the game this late on into it's historical development.

I understand the size issues, and a few of them could be viable with less, for sure. I guess I am just used to playing a large nation, all of those years of playing the US and the Tsarist States, you know. Hmmm, well, I will wait for more details and make a decision as to which one to move forward with .

Personally Quinn I see no problems with claim one, save the Iceland thing.

As to two: without Brazil in my opinion this is an absolutely reasonable claim. I can’t really speak for the others, that will be more for your new neighbors to decide

Q, I can honestly say with some certainty that those are the four least original ideas anyone could possibly have come up with given the almost totally irrelevant RL territories left available.

Being squirreled away in East Asia, I cant provide too much feedback on the content of the various proposals, other than to say nothing stands out as entirely objectionable. I will, though, echo concerns over the size of the claims... perhaps one or maybe two of the listed territories would seem a more appropriate scale.

As for Avarga, the altered claim would serve as another example of RL borders being broken up in AMW, which in the end is a good thing. I'm just glad I'm not the one who has to try and draw it all out on the map ^_^.

I second Spyr, TCB, Mari and the rest, in today's AMW, most nations are a lot smaller.
Personally, I don't have much of a problem with you having a large claim, but I feel we have to use the same set of rules for you as for everyone else.
All my points have already been addressed, so I'm just going to say that I like the Scandinavian claim a lot. Not only would it be convenient to have another democracy bordering Kiev (and Germany), now that Tsalland seems to occupy all of Austria and we share a longer border, but also because I now think that there might be a player there who will stick around :).

I agree with what everyone has said to Quin, any one of his ideas could work and the Nazi's in Brazil thing would have a RL parallel in the Nazis in Argentina thing. It would just be on steroids is all...

But if Quin does that then we would REALLY need a Jewish State, just to spice things up a bit!

Well, I would echo Spyr at this moment in time.

Ya know, when I came to these parts, I had a ninety-million people claim and i thought that was HUGE! Now, it feels rather average! LOl

Quinn, I never met ya before, but seeing as the old guard are excited to have you around, i look forward to your new claim and getting an opportunity to RP with you.

I might as well ask this, since it's been bugging me:

Quinn, with your proposed Imperial Portugal, why exactly do they lay a total claim of submission on Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi? Those areas were never held by them. In AMW, those areas were colonised by the British South Africa Company and became part of Rhodesia as a result, since Cecil Rhodes owned the company and Rhodesia was a British colony at the time. As for Venezuela, Guyana, French Guyana and Suriname, no-one has claimed them yet, so they have no history whatsoever. It seems a little odd for Imperial Portugal to claim these lands but not colonise them, considering that in AMW they don't have anyone running them.

I mean, would you be deliberately looking to start conflict with that nation? If that went ahead as you've detailed it, new players would be hesitant to go to South America for fear of Imperial Portugal starting on them simply because they have a nation in territory that Portugal always wanted but were too lazy to colonise. As for Africa, would I be in a situation where you're planning to go to war with me over territories that your nation has never actually held and has just 'decided' that it has a claim on them?

This imperial Portugal business kinda throws my claim off a bit. I would like someone to claim Portugal, but Florida sees itself as the head of the former Portuguese colonies. Should Portugal still exist as an empire, it needs some sort of civil war in the empire or various wars of independence to explain, which is difficult for my Portogal-centric claim. I can adapt, but it seems odd that such a large empire survived. The size of the claim is massive, in fact Brazil in itself far out-populates the Trade Federation. Given that I also have Nicaragua as a former-Portuguese colony and Spain has no former empire the Tordesillas Treaty is redundant in AMW as things stand as well.

I do very much like the Scandinavian claim though, a nice ally for the Baltic against Kiev I imagine.

As for my altered claim, I would be keeping Bahrain, which is pretty much as it is today, but more culturally akin to Portugal or Goa. This is to allow meddling in the Gulf area. Still, Kuwait is an unnecessary part of my claim given that I am no longer able to play Byzantium and Arabian Oil off each other in an attempt to control the oil trade. Bahrain can still fulfill the middle-man role if need be from Byzantium and is not likely to take away from claimants in the Gulf. So, it's a straight swap from Kuwait and the little bit of Iraq for Cabinda. Cabinda I imagine was an independent state formerly of the Portuguese empire that allied with the axis in WWII, Florida then invaded and conquered the isolated country when given the opportunity and set up a dominion like that of Nicaragua.

<Beddgelert> if that were true, i'd never have woken up with pockets full of ketchup

Oh, the claims in Africa do have a historical basis. (As do the claims in South America, but less so). When the South American Empire started to collapse, Portugal started to focus on its African holdings, and while it had the two aforementioned nation sized holdings, it claimed all of the territory between them. No big deal, but yes, the reason I did bring that claim up was to precipitate some conflict.

But, I think I will drop the the Imperial Portugal Claim, I don't want to make any problems.
