96%? That's overkill.

My standard is set at 95%, and I think it's good, but 96% is a bit much.

96% for me is a sign something's wrong and that improvement should be made, but it is acceptable.

This is partially because Indian schooling is based around ranking and a 96% put you at the bottom 10% of the class.

To be honest, America needs to seriously improve, but India needs to change some things as well. Like how we did university examinations.

Maharashtra has over 100 million citizens, so there are a lot of people in school and the like. In a single year, only 1000 students will go onto an university.

It was fucking insane. People actually killed themselves over the pressure of that, especially since education is such a big deal over there. They've changed things so it's more sane now, but that was just crazy.

Wow. Damn.

Here, university is free and anyone can get in as long as they got decent grades and pass an exam. At least as far as I know.

But then, our education sucks.

I managed to somehow pass, something which puzzles me to this day (though I was 860 or so), but a lot of people didn't.

The reason this is now beginning to rapidly change is because the economy is growing in India and suddenly we need a lot more college graduates in engineering and the other skills. The students' well-beings are not really an important factor in this. :p

Name: Rev. Daniel Andreas

Age (Actual): 499

Age (Appears): 51

Race: Human/Vampire hybrid, sort of; specifically, he is known one of those rare individuals known as a Sabbatanos, or a Hawthorn. And this is all actually Eastern European folklore (with some twists), so listen up! A Sabbatanos is a man or woman born on a Saturday; his father is a vampire, his mother a mortal woman (typically the vampire's widow. Have fun with that idea.) Anyway, these individuals are capable of seeing vampires, magic, and other supernal entities; in short, they perceive the intrusion of the supernatural into the physical world, however it manifests itself. Also, they stop aging at around fifty, and then live essentially forever unless they're killed. Since a Sabbatanos has one role - to protect the living from the threats which only he can see - they typically don't live that long. Vampire-hunting has a pretty high mortality rate. Incidentally, this is why the Sabbatanoi are also called Hawthorns; the pyre upon which one burns a vampire's body is built using hawthorn wood. Anyway, because of the problems with being violently slaughtered, Daniel is likely the oldest surviving Sabbatanos in the world. He is also one of the few remaining ones, period: vampires got wise around the time of the Industrial Revolution and started killing anyone who could see them while the Sabbatanoi were still children.

Appearance: Daniel Andreas is surprisingly physically unprepossessing (well, he was born in the sixteenth century, and people were smaller then). He is slightly under six feet tall, and quite thin, with fine bones and a runner's build: muscular but not burly. But there is something in how he holds himself that makes him seem much larger than he is. As you would expect, he has a ton of scars; the most immediately noticeable are on his face (faded burn scarring over the left cheek, ear, and neck) and hands (blade scars on the palms, knuckles like horn). He has fair skin, tanned to a pale gold; his hair is pure silver-white, worn short and neatly trimmed. He has what was once called a warrior's beard; thick but short, trimmed close to the jawline and lip - also entirely white. The eyes are startling: a pale and intense blue, almost electric-blue, large and brilliant and seemingly endless. Around the school, he typically wears a dark blue, double-breasted cassock with white clergy collar; this is one of the reasons why Daniel seems larger than he is, because a fitted cassock emphasizes one's chest and shoulders. In the outside world, he favors plain street clothes, usually of hard-wearing wool and canvas and leather.

Powergrid/Powers:
Powergrid
INT 4. Note: The equivalence scale suggests that this refers mainly to rational or analytical intelligence; in terms of emotional intelligence, Daniel is rather further along.
STR 5
SPD 5
DUR 5
FS 9. Note: He fought vampires and other supernatural uglies, continuously, for about 350 years. And lived.
CHA 5

Magic
Level 5 Perceptivity: Daniel can see magic, essentially. He can see magical beings, and he can see magic itself, where it enters into the physical world. It manifests itself in his vision as colors that defy description, wafting like smoke. Trippy, right? Things that are naturally invisible are simply visible to Daniel. So that's invisible creatures, and magic generally. Things that someone is actively attempting to hide, Daniel can see only vaguely, if at all. This is because he can see magic, and so magic whose purpose is to conceal something is itself visible to him, if only very slightly. By concentration, he may be able to penetrate the magical concealment itself and see what lies behind; this depends on his willpower, focus, and the relative strength of the concealment spell and his own Sabbatanos abilities.

Weaknesses: Daniel knows his way around all kinds of cutting-edge weapons, but he is pretty damned useless with every other kind of technology. He doesn't like it, and doesn't trust it. He also has a lingering distrust of magic generally (he doesn't include his own highly specific and genetically-linked abilities in this category); he regards it as dangerously seductive, a temptation to hubris and might-makes-right mentalities. It's not bad in and of itself, but it can have terrible effects on a soul. This is a clear limit on the ways in which he can deal with any given situation. More deeply, Daniel is a man who regards himself as having been saved from himself; his greatest fear is neither death nor failure, but lapsing back into being the person he once was. Accordingly, he holds to his principles - in most cases - with the fervor of a drowning man clutching a lifeline; to violate those principles would be to lose himself, and that is far worse - in Daniel's eyes - than death or failure. So in ninety percent of cases, Daniel will feel unable to take preemptive violent action, or to use more force than is absolutely necessary. He's that guy who walks into a trap, knowing that it's a trap, because he cannot do anything else and still be who he is.

Personality:

Really, you should just read the history. I write bios as a way of exploring my characters' mentalities, so this won't make sense unless you read the bio first. Equally, if you have read the bio, then there's less point in reading this section. But what the hell: let's go ahead anyway.

First off, an interesting and somewhat surprising fact. Daniel Andreas doesn't actually like violence. He doesn't have the suppressed bloodlust that, to varying extents, has characterized most warriors throughout history. He is phenomenally, superhumanly good at violence, but he does not enjoy it. And living such an unbelievably violent life has had a traumatizing effect upon him. He believes that his past actions, his centuries spent killing Catholics and vampires and werewolves and anyone else whom he felt to be an "enemy of God," have forever warped his soul - and he is probably right about that. He cannot simply embrace violence, and so he has needed - desperately, consumingly - to justify it to himself.

This leads to the second major aspect of Daniel's personality. For hundreds of years, he justified his violent actions - and therefore held at bay the psychological trauma inflicted by those actions - by believing that he was one of God's elect, chosen to defend the anointed of the Lord and to purge the world of God's enemies. When this justification finally fell apart - when Daniel realized that he could not, in fact, justify what he'd done - the accumulated psychological trauma accumulated in the course of this naturally gentle man's centuries of bloody murder hit him all at once. He concluded that he deserved damnation. This has left him with two very important convictions: first, that people are naturally and entirely sinful. They do nothing good by themselves. Even when they believe that they are doing good things, they are actually acting out their sinful desires under a cloak of self-congratulatory piety. So Daniel feels himself and others to be continually and entirely reliant upon God's love and forgiveness, because by their own actions they can do nothing good. Second, Daniel is profoundly reluctant to pass hard-and-fast moral judgment on the actions of others. While he believes that he knows right from wrong in a worldly, practical sense, Daniel does not believe that he - as an equally sinful being - has the right to declare that anyone else's actions are against God's will. For Daniel, it's taken for granted that more or less everyone's actions are against God's will, his own as much as everyone else's.

Finally, there is faith. Daniel's belief in God is grounded in a classic convert's experience, familiar to Paul, Augustine, and Luther. Having despaired of his own righteousness, having realized that by any standard of justice he deserved hellfire, Daniel was shocked to experience, suddenly and irresistibly, the love of God just the same. For Daniel, God's unconditional and irresistible love is the only hope which any human being - or angel, or demon - has of true peace, true happiness. And because God's love comes in spite of sin, forgiveness and mercy are of critical importance in Daniel's psyche. Having been saved despite himself, he feels an obligation to respond to God's love and forgiveness with his own love and forgiveness - not in order to earn God's love, but as a natural response to it - to love as he is loved. He is a caregiver, a nurturer, a protector. He lives by a code, but it is not the warrior code of honor and justice; it is the code of gratitude, sacrifice, and forgiveness. To the extent that violence enters the picture, it grows out of that experience; Daniel still remembers and values the "sheepdog" analogy which Stefan Petrascu taught him (see below), but it now is less about duty for him, and more about compassion.

Daniel knows firsthand how seductive self-righteous anger can be. For him, certainty in oneself - certainty that one is right, that one is pure, that one's actions are just or meet with God's approval - is the most dangerous thing in the world. And so Daniel's faith is in God, not in himself; in forgiveness of wrongs, not in certainty of righteousness; in love, not in judgment. This serene gentleness, born out of trauma and spiritual crisis, lies at the heart of his character.

History:
Daniel Andreas was born on a Saturday in October of 1531, in a small village in the Principality of Transylvania. His father had been a local knight, but died a year before the boy’s birth; he was a wicked, brutal man, and went to his grave little-mourned by anyone, including his wife, who remarried. Three months after his death, the man – now a vampire – returned, and raped his widow. Nine months later, Daniel Andreas was born.

He could see things. That became clear almost immediately. This was Transylvania, after all, so magic was everywhere. The young child grew up staring around at phenomena which were visible only to him; his first words were "Behold the lights." This would have been a quick passport to an auto-da-fé, except that Sabbatanoi were a recognized phenomenon in Transylvania. So instead, the local priest gave Daniel a special blessing, told him to stay with his mother until he turned twelve, and then apprenticed him to an older Sabbatanos.

Two weeks before he left for this apprenticeship, Daniel's father - the vampire - appeared in the boy's home once again. Daniel attacked him with a stick of cordwood. The vampire broke his legs and threw him into a burning fireplace. Then he killed Daniel's mother. Then he left. The boy crawled half-dead out of the flames of his home, and then lost consciousness.

When he awoke, he found that his apprenticeship had begun. Stefan Petrascu was a renowned Sabbatanos more than a century old in 1543, a man much-feared by the vampires, werewolves, and wizards of the Transylvanian mountains. He healed Daniel's legs, and taught him how - and why - to fight. From Stefan, Daniel learned a view of the world that boiled down into three categories: humans were sheep, supernatural creatures were wolves seeking to prey upon those sheep, and Sabbatanoi were sheepdogs - men more like the wolves than like the sheep, but who had chosen to serve the shepherd (God) rather than their own stomachs. Equally importantly, Daniel learned how to stand up to creatures whose abilities were far further beyond the human norm than were his own: through intelligence, preparation, useful weaponry, solid fighting tactics, unshakeable willpower, and enormous skill.

But by the time that Daniel and his fellow apprentices set out to follow in their master's footsteps ten years later, it was not the supernatural that was tearing Europe apart: it was religious war. The young Reformation had forever shattered the unity of Western Christendom: Scandinavia, the Baltic, and much of Germany had become solidly Lutheran, and there were further Lutheran pockets across Poland and Eastern Europe. The Netherlands, England, Scotland, and Daniel's native Transylvania had pledged themselves to the Reformed faith pioneered by Jean Calvin; Reformed communities were on the rise across Switzerland and Germany, and even in the heart of Catholic France. Everywhere, Catholic rulers struggled to hold the line against change, and bloodshed was often the result. Gone was the undogmatic, supernaturally savvy rural medieval Catholicism of Daniel's childhood; confessional divides were hardening, and doctrines with them.

In the end, even the Sabbatanoi had to choose sides. Daniel read extensively, and ultimately pledged himself to the Reformed movement. His old master Stefan chose to stand by the Vatican. Across the century of savage religious war that followed, the Sabbatanoi moved across Europe in the shadows, fighting each other as often as they opposed their old enemies. The sheepdogs had turned against one another. For Daniel, the experience was traumatic; he was led ever deeper into a Puritan Calvinism which assured him of his own salvation, which allowed him to see his actions as those of an Old Testament warrior of God. This worldview seemed to receive confirmation in 1621, when Daniel finally hunted down his father in the mountains above Făgăraș, and threw the now old and powerful vampire to his death upon the rocks below.

As the decades passed, it became clear that Daniel Andreas was special, possibly even unique, and even by the standards of the Sabbatanoi. He seemed invincible; his fighting skill grew to almost inhuman levels. But he also retreated into himself; he refused to take on apprentices, and shunned human contact, focusing obsessively upon his role as the shield of God's elect. He became consumed with the idea of killing Stefan Petrascu, his old master, in retribution for Stefan's obstinate Catholicism.

But Stefan could not be found. And as the decades wore on, Europe tired of religious war; its bitternesses remained, but the slaughter of countless millions drew to a close as battle and the plague drained entire cities of their populations, and the eagerly anticipated Apocalypse failed to materialize. But for Daniel Andreas, the war could not be over. In Daniel's mind, the only thing that could possibly justify what he had done - what he had seen - was total victory for the forces of God. That would mean that all his sins had, in the end, been justified. Anything else was inconceivable.

And so Daniel hunted Stefan Petrascu among the libraries and coffee-shops of Enlightenment Europe, through the winding streets of Revolutionary America, amidst the ports and bazaars of Robert Clive's expanding Indian empire. He fought a war that had ended a lifetime ago, through a world that - increasingly - he no longer understood. Year by year, the number of Sabbatanoi who survived past childhood fell, and few of the remainder chose to fight the creatures who preyed upon humanity; they preferred to keep their heads down, and remain unnoticed. All the old certainties of Daniel Andreas' life were passing away as modernity continued its relentless march, and he clung in desperation to the one thing that could tell him who he was, that could justify what he had done a century and more ago: his quest to kill Stefan Petrascu.

Daniel finally caught up to Stefan in Tibet in 1831. I'm not going to give too many details here about what happened that day; this is one of several events that I want to explore more fully in a one-shot. Suffice to say that the two men fought, and Daniel killed Stefan - and did it with shocking ease, almost without trying. And as Daniel stared down at his old mentor's broken body, and knew that his centuries-long quest - the one thing that he had believed could justify his life of bloodshed - was finally over, he understood at last.

What lay at his feet was just another body. It changed nothing. It justified nothing. It was no victory for God; God needed nothing that Daniel Andreas could offer him. Killing Stefan was not salvation, Daniel realized; it was the final seal of Daniel's own damnation, the sign that he had lost his last chance to turn from murder to forgiveness, from death to life. Daniel had lost his soul in exchange for the cheap promise of hubristic self-righteousness. By convincing himself that he was God's warrior, he had damned himself forever.

Daniel left Tibet a lost and broken man. He had no friends, no loved ones. Most other Sabbatanoi were dead. His purpose was gone, replaced by emptiness. All that was left to him was to live out his life for as long as possible, knowing that nothing awaited him at its end but hellfire. Gradually, such an existence began to seem hellish itself, crowned by the greatest irony of all: Daniel could not die of old age, but he had grown so deadly that virtually no foe could kill him. Existence - constant awareness of the crushing weight of his own sins - became intolerable to Daniel; yet still more intolerable was the certainty of eternal punishment after death. There was no way out. Life or death - both meant only unending suffering.

He remained in this state for more than a century, drifting from place to place, desultorily killing vampires and werewolves when he found them, drinking away his sorrows night after night for a hundred and twenty years. Around him, the world changed yet more, beyond all recognition; Daniel no longer bothered to try to understand it. And then came salvation, in the form of a man named Martin.

Daniel met Dr. Martin Luther King in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. Compared to Daniel, the young minister was an infant. And yet each man saw something in the other; Daniel would always later say that King's love for those who persecuted him was the first glimmer of hope that someone might someday love Daniel, too, despite all the blood upon his hands shed in the name of God. They spoke only once, for less than a minute. King gave Daniel a Bible, and told him to put aside everything that he thought he knew, and just read it.

So Daniel did. And what he found brought him full circle, back to the Calvinism which he had first encountered in sixteenth-century Transylvania - and yet it was a very different Calvinism from his erstwhile Puritanism. Daniel realized at last that he was not God's warrior, or God's anointed. Nothing that he said or did could prove that he was saved; nothing that he said or did could earn him forgiveness, or justify his actions. He deserved damnation, for all that he had done.

And God still loved him anyway. Loved him enough to speak to him. Loved him enough to forgive him. Loved him enough to die on a cross for him, that his sins might be redeemed. Loved him in spite of his own ability to act justly, to desire righteousness, or even to love in return as God loved him. Loved him unconditionally, not because of all that he had done, but in spite of it. Loved him eternally, without limitations or conditions, beginning or end.

In that realization was freedom, abrupt and staggering. It washed away the fear of well-deserved damnation in a flood of mercy. It was balm to the soul. Daniel laid down his past, and resolved to begin anew. He studied incognito at Episcopal Divinity School, and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church of the United States - though his long history means that his religious identity cannot be regarded as belonging strictly to any one denomination. He spent several decades as a priest, moving fairly rapidly from parish to parish, in order to avoid having anyone realize that he did not age like his parishioners.

Due to his perception of magic, Daniel was among the first people to see that the supernatural was entering the world as never before in the early twenty-first century. When the nature of heaven and hell became public, Daniel suddenly sprang into national and even global prominence for his preaching. He recognized in the angels his own old malaise: the belief that one is God's anointed, and that therefore the ends justify whatever means one chooses to employ. Daniel thundered from the pulpit that God - the Triune God revealed in the Scriptures, who created and redeemed the world - did not have anointed ones. Angels were sinners just like humans, and like humans they cloaked their sins with arrogant righteousness. But no one, Daniel cried, is righteous before the Lord: not men, not angels, not demons. All are hopeless sinners, equally worthy of damnation. All are equally in need of unconditional love, free grace, limitless forgiveness. True heaven could not be an apartheid state; true hell could not be the doom of all men. God, not Uriel, was the ruler of the universe; loving mercy, not disciplined judgment, had the last word. The message proved to have enormous popular appeal, and helped to preserve traditional Protestant Christianity through the early twenty-first century.

Obviously, Uriel didn't take too kindly to this. He sent several hit squads after the troublesome preacher. They rapidly discovered that trying to kill the deadliest Sabbatanos of all time was not a particularly easy feat, even for powerful magical beings supported and directed by angelic magic. Daniel had a few very close calls, but managed to send his opponents home in boxes. It was obvious, however, that his days were numbered if he continued to try to avoid angelic anger alone. Accordingly, a sex-crazed freak named Aleister Crowley appeared in Daniel's Boston church one day and offered him a job as a chaplain, counselor, and religious studies teacher at Elfen High.

Only after Daniel had already accepted did he realize that the first two parts of that job description were mostly evidence of Crowley's unique sense of humor.

Some kid at my school (Catholic Republican who supports Christendom, for reference - is Christendom even still a movement?) said Africa never "did anything".

And then he removed Egypt because "it's not Africa".

Egypt became the entire Middle East.

Egypt became the entirety of Northern Africa.

And then he said that it didn't count "if it was in Africa".

Night, destroy him please.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

Bro, do you even geography?
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

This is even worse than when Rick Santorum said "Africa is a country on the brink" in one of the Republican Primary debates.
