About Us

Chartered over one hundred and twenty years ago by Central Director Merle Elliott Schultz, Designwerks has grown from modest beginnings to become the most successful collection of centrally-planned industrial enterprises in Gholgoth. From its origins as a government-sponsored regulatory trust for mining, shipbuilding, and metalworking, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime have grown phenomenally in size and complexity. Designwerks now represents the largest gathering of state-managed businesses in the United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime - if not the world - employing over 5.1 billion people in 6 million state-run or nationalized firms.

Initally, the aims of Designwerks were rooted in the desperate necessities of a state emerging from the ruins of war: generate hard currency while stemming a persistent exodus of manufacturing jobs from the fledgling USSSP by exporting heavy industrial equipment and raw materials to eager international consumers. From these beginnings, Designwerks has rapidly diversified into the cutting edges of science and engineering.

About Nume'kognaa

Image

Sixty years ago, the Nume'kognaa (Numerical Cognition) Initiative was one of the most highly publicized research projects of the pre-Gothic Schultarian state. At the behest of the Central Scientific Collective, Department of Defense, Designwerks, and private semiconductor manufacturers, an annual budget of eighty-five million Merlons was set aside by the federal government to encourage research and development on more compact, powerful, and energy-efficient computing devices for national defense, census collection, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence. Fueled by government investment, state and private industries scrambled to build faster and better calculating machines for government and scientific use.

Because of the state's funding priorities, many private semiconductor firms eventually grew large enough to qualify for direct mergers with the State Industries of Schultaria Prime. As a result, the private sector aims of the Nume'kognaa Initiative were scaled back in favor of Designwerks Nume'kognaa - a public/private collaboration between electronics firms with less federal intervention. In the forty years since that collaboration, Designwerks has become the preeminent manufacturer of supercomputers, mainframes, and specialized electronic components within Gholgoth. With a forty percent market share of all server farms, data centers, and telecommunications hubs in the region, Schultarian computer manufacturers have established a well-deserved reputation for reliability, adaptability, and compatibility.

From the CEO of the State Industries of Schultaria Prime:

After several years of internal restructuring, Designwerks - a name that's been known and respected in Schultaria Prime and Gholgoth for over twelve decades, once again opens up its product lines to the world! To all nations, whether former customers or new clients, welcome!

Unlike many international storefronts, The State Industries of Schultaria Prime - Designwerks does not sell offensive military equipment for export. As one of the the oldest international storefronts to pioneer civilian technology, Designwerks follows the common ideal that national strength comes from creativity and industry, not from the force of arms. It is an ideal we hope that you share, and we hope that our products and services may be of some help in furthering your technological and industrial progress.

If you are interested in looking at our wares, please feel free to sample our product catalog below. You'll find products in a variety of very beneficial civilian fields, with more to come in future updates!

Personal Computers

Image

As the most widely distributed personal computer in Schultaria Prime, the Cimones has grown from a simple origins to a national icon. The Cimones was the first product to coin the term “Data Tablet”, which has become shorthand for virtually every computer to come since the introduction of this venerable product line fifteen years ago. From latest high definition movies and interactive games to composing and analyzing critical research in the field, this computer provides all the power necessary for work and play.

Built to exacting physical and computational tolerances, it is easy to see why the Cimones is internationally lauded. As a personal computer system, but with the toughness and reliability that customers would expect from military technology, this data tablet will keep running in the harshest environments on the battlefield, or the daily hazards of the office.

As business, research firms, and government institutions demand increased performance with less clutter, many computer corporations across the world have struggled to keep pace between personal and server-based computing power. Designwerks, in collaboration with Altunis Computation and the Schultarian Diode Company have attempted to tackle the problem by merging the platforms of desktop and server into a series of portable machines.

As a personal computer, the Do'cloveen is a machine that can compete with the best and most versatile laptops on the market, but its true secret to success lies in its ability to network with existing server architecture. Designed to fit a traditional rack mount server configuration, these personal computers can easily fit and integrate with dozens of Do'cloveen computing units (or any other kind of “bladed” server format) to form an upgradeable (and highly mobile) computing cluster.

Personal Media

Image

A project nearly two and a half years in the making from the Schultarian Diode Company, The State Industries of Schultaria Prime are proud to present the Sapanna Electronic Paper System to the general public.

Utilizing charged biochemical photo receptors in a matrix of small capsules, the Sapanna can create an image with the clarity of 2,500 individual points of color per square centimeter with a rapid rate of image refreshment that can compete with traditional video monitors. A far cry from existing e-paper (which uses extensive electromechanical components and plastic substrates) the Sapanna system is virtually indistinguishable from its wood based counterpart. Unlike conventional newspapers, however, the Sapanna can be reprogrammed, is resilient to the forces of nature, and fully capable of transmitting demanding video applications without any loss in image quality.

Following the successes of the HPC in creating the “virtual laboratory” revolution, the University of Schultaria Prime (in conjunction with Designwerks) set out to build a newer, faster, generation of Supercomputers based on the HPC's proven architecture What came out of the collaboration between academia and industry would become the basis of the CHEMIR Supercomputer.

Like the HPC, the CHEMIR class of Supercomputers are designed to work either isolated or in parallel, and are also engineered to very loose software tolerances. Where the CHEMIR stands apart from its ancestor is its greater emphasis on data processing and information transfer performance, reducing bottlenecks normally found with bandwidth-heavy simulations.

Quantum-Architecture Supercomputers

Image

The QUANVER supercomputer was the first Designwerks product to ever break the hundred billion merlon sales mark, and a revolution to Schultaria Prime's prestige as an advanced technological power. Although it's approximately the same dimensions as the HPC, the QUANVER Supercomputer is designed to operate at speeds that could never be achieved with existing semiconductor technology.

As the end result of thirty years in applied research and development, the QUANVER's success lies in the application of its revolutionary QBIT quantum processor architecture. QUANVER's processors, codenamed Prometheus, integrate unique polynomial processing architecture with conventional floating point hardware to render complex mathematical calculations at speeds far beyond binary-dependent systems.

Designwerks, following the commercial and technological successes of the QUANVER, and on the initiative of the Schultarian State, was challenged to develop a self-contained supercomputer that could break the five Teraflop barrier. With a clear mandate from the government, and virtually no limitations on research spending, the first prototypes of what would become the DALIER Supercomputer surpassed everyone's expectations. From the introduction of 512 bit processing architecture to the complete dismissal of magnetic storage devices in favor of denser and more stable crystalline data lattices, the DALIER became a machine that had, and still has, no peers.

Unfortunately, this level of advancement was not cheap, as the research and development budget for this supercomputer prototype exceeded ninety billion merlons in less than four years. Nonetheless, the capabilities of this supercomputer are so vast that DALIER operators can expect these machines to be competitively capable with other supercomputing clusters for the next two decades.

As data volume increases exponentially, engineers from Designwerks have been been working tirelessly to create smaller, faster, and denser ways of compressing data without the use of magnetic storage media. The most successful project to date - a collaboration with the University of Schultaria Prime-Schultaria Prime - was the NEXCRA: a cheap, rugged, and highly versatile form of non magnetic crystalline media.

The storage crystal, composed of artificial quartz, is placed within the NEXCRA's laser array and subjected to a series of multi-axis reference lasers that alter the crystal's molecular structure in a three dimensional matrix. This matrix, which becomes nanoscopically etched with binary “bubbles”, can hold an incredible amount of data in a very compact space. Presently, most standard NEXCRA devices can usually store, transfer, and access data at a compression rate of 1 Terabyte per cubic millimeter with an estimated (dormant) bit rot rate of 1 bit per 3.1536 x 1011 seconds.

OOC: The subtle Homeworld reference on the screen of that computer has earned you a YellowApple Point™, which is worthless beyond dubious bragging rights.

I'll make an IC post pitching YellOS shortly.

Edit: and I realize that your flag is a combination of the Nabaal and Paktu kiiths now that I look at it more closely. You're so getting a post from me.

To Whom It May Concern:

We've taken notice of your business - Designwerks Computation - and its wide array of consumer, enterprise, and military computing hardware. We would like to work with you in establishing YellOS - YellowApple, Inc.'s premier open-source operating system - as a preinstallation option (or even the default operating system) for your company's hardware.

About YellOS

YellOS (YellowApple, Inc. Operating System) is a modular and cross-platform operating system from YellowApple, Inc. renowned for its robustness, low resource consumption, and portability while making no sacrifices in ease of use and appearance. Like all YellowApple, Inc. software products, YellOS is both free as in 'free speech' (released under the GNU General Public License) and 'free beer' (costs absolutely nothing to download, install, use, modify, distribute, or do anything else with).

YellOS is a Unix-like operating system, having originated as an enterprise-grade Linux distribution, and still uses a highly-modular variant of the Linux kernel. These Linux underpinnings have facilitated YellOS's growth from an experiment in high-level coding to among the most trusted names in the enterprise world. Combining low resource consumption with high reliability, security, and usability is the overarching goal of YellOS.

Here's just some of the numerous features available in YellOS:

  • Cross-compatibility: the YellOS API Module Subsystem enables users to install API Modules, which provide both API and ABI compatibility with Windows, Mac OS X, Phoenix², and more (note: dependent on target architecture; binaries compiled for one architecture may need to be recompiled to run on another architecture)
  • Stability: rebooting is a thing of the past; YellOS's modularity - including kernel and driver redundancy - allows for a YellOS installation to run for as long as the hardware lives
  • Performance: native YellOS applications are distributed as platform-neutral bytecode; on officially-supported architectures, the installation process automatically recompiles software packages to platform-specific binaries, taking into account all code optimizations available to the target platform and utilizing them for maximum runtime performance
  • Portability: since all YellOS software - even YellOS itself - is distributed in platform-neutral bytecode, YellOS can install and run on virtually any system that the installer will run on - which is (you guessed it) virtually any system
  • Scalability: YellOS installations on the same local area network can coordinate with each other and form ad-hoc computing clusters out-of-the-box, making all YellOS-powered computers and devices work faster; alternately, YellOS Cluster Edition enables even users with minimal computing knowledge to harness the power of dedicated cluster computing in their own homes
  • Pizazz: the YellOS Graphical Shell (YOS-GS) is fully three-dimensional, and vector-based graphics make YellOS look beautiful on any screen size and pixel density
  • Security: process isolation, intelligent memory management, multi-tiered security levels, support for multi-factor authentication, and a myriad of other features make malware obsolete; plus, if an exploit is found, YellOS's open-source design model allows for rapid security updates
  • Usability: the YellOS Graphical Shell - and the included applications - are powerful, beautiful, and user-friendly, making them suitable for novices and power users alike; plus, the integrated YellOS Package Management System not only provides users with all kinds of software just a click or tap away, but also updates both the operating system and installed software automatically and without fuss

YellOS Desktop Edition can run on as low as 512MB of RAM with a single 2.0GHz RISC-architecture core, while we have managed to port YellOS Embedded Edition to system-on-chip RISC devices with less than 16MB of RAM. We generally recommend (for optimal performance with typical use cases) at least 1-2GB of physical RAM and a dual-core CPU for a retail desktop machine, and 8GB of RAM with a quad-core CPU for a server or dedicated cluster-computing node, neither of which should be a problem for Designwerks' hardware, given the specifications provided. YellOS is officially supported (by YellowApple, Inc.) on SPARC (including and especially YellowApple, Inc.'s YA-SPARC variant), IA32, AMD64, IA64, ARM (32 or 64 bit), PowerPC/POWER, MIPS, and a variety of generic RISC architectures with word sizes ranging between 16 and 512 bits, while YellOS community developers - thanks to YellOS being free, libre, and open source software (FLOSS) - have ported the operating system to even more architectures.

We therefore encourage your company to consider including YellOS among the operating system options available - if not the default option - for your company's consumer devices, supercomputers, industrial control systems, and military-grade servers. The operating system itself costs nothing to you, and we offer competitively-priced and comprehensive support contracts to retailers of YellOS-powered machines if needed. Combine this with what YellOS can bring to your products, and you've got one heck of an offer.

For more information about YellOS, please consult YellOS's encyclopædic entry or check out our YellOS product page at the YellowApple, Inc. Corporate Frontend and Storefront.

In order to facilitate porting and optimizing the YellOS base system and re-compiler to your company's hardware architectures (namely, the Kevlan, Stada, Clone-IV, Orrokern, Prometheus, and Hermes series of processors), and to ensure full hardware compatibility should your company be interested in utilizing YellOS, we are also interested in purchasing one each of your major hardware series (Cimones, Docloveen, Sapanna, HPC, CHEMIR, QUANVIR, DALIER, SAMMUTUS, and SPATEX), in addition to one each of your company's Rotovo and NEXCRA data archive systems.

Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to doing business with you.

Sincerely,

Corporate Representative Colgate

Subject: Acknowledgement of purchase.
Proposal for corporate partnership in exchange for adapting operating system to Designwerks hardware.

Representative Colgate,

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mishka Weigertz, and as Chief Executive Officer of Designwerks Internationale I have been authorized by the parties listed above to act as the official representative of the State Industries of Schultaria Prime.

After significant deliberations amongst leadership from Designwerks, the Schultarian Diode Company, Altunis Computation, and the University of Schultaria Prime Research Corporation, we have come to the following agreements:

Firstly, in balance between public consumer choice and fulfilling obligations to company charter, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime are willing to offer the YellOS Operating System as a preinstallation option for all of our product lines alongside Designwerks' UNIOS and other third-party vendors.

Secondly, in the interests of programming efficiency, Designwerks shall sell the computers requested by YellowApple Incorporated as expeditiously as possible. All machines shall include relevant programming documentation at the Assembly-level, if requested. If such a request is made, both parties agree that proprietary code and design information of all relevant processors (with the exception of the P-Clone series) are subject to relevant local and international copyright protections.

Finally, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime would like to express a formal interest in public cooperation between Designwerks Nume'kognaa (Computation) and YellowApple Incorporated. As a formal corporate partner, we would be willing to promote your products and services to states who order our goods and services outside of Gholgoth. As inter-regional sales have become a larger portion of the State Industries of Schultaria Prime's revenue, this represents a growth market that we hope will continue to expand for years to come. In exchange, we would offer all the normal benefits and preferential treatment befitting such a partnership, including:

  • A line of credit with the USSSP Central Bank up to 250,000,000,000 sm ($ 452,500,000,000) at 2.25% APY for capital-intensive projects or emergency finance.
  • Up to a 10% discount on all products, goods, and services from any Designwerks' product line.
  • Priority customs clearance and reduced import fees on all products imported to Designwerks

Needless to say, we are quite pleased that you have contacted us, and we hope that we can come to an acceptable arrangement that will be mutually beneficial for our respective firms. In the interest of insuring your company can begin adapting your software to our hardware specifications, Designwerks has approved an order for all of our product lines. To insure the machines are stripped down to their barest operating components, but still retain functionality, all of the traditional operating systems, except for Assembly language, interpreter, and mid-level BIOS, shall be removed.

For the purposes of international exchange, we shall credit said payment in universal standard dollars.

The billed price shall be as listed:
  • One (1) of each of the following Consumer Electronics:
    • Cimones Data Tablet: $1,900, or one thousand, nine hundred
    • Do'cloveen Hybrid Computer: $2,705, or two thousand, seven hundred and five
    • Sapanna Electronic Paper System: $500, or five hundred
  • One (1) of each of the following Supercomputing Systems:
    • HPC Series: $170,000, or one hundred seventy thousand
    • CHEMIR Series: $340,000, or one three hundred forty thousand
    • QUANVER Series: $5,068,000, or five million, sixty-eight thousand
    • DALIER Series: $59,730,000, or fifty-nine million, seven hundred thirty thousand
  • One (1) of each of the following Specialized Computing Systems:
    • SAMMUTUS Automation System: $200,000, or two hundred thousand
    • SPX-1 Series: $42,000, or forty-two thousand
    • SPX-2 Series: $65,000, or sixty-five thousand
    • SPX-3 Series: $134,000, or one hundred thirty-four thousand
  • And One (1) of each of the following Peripherals:
    • Rotovo Data Archive: $2,715,000, or two million, seven hundred and fifteen thousand
    • NEXCRA Crystalline Data Archive: $13,575,000, or thirteen million, five hundred seventy-five thousand

For a total of $82,044,105, or eighty-two million, forty-four thousand, one hundred and five, to be paid upon delivery of the products listed.

We look forward you your consideration of our offer, and hope that this will be the start of a productive partnership.

Sincerely,

Mishka Weigertz.

CEO Weigertz:

Thank you for your prompt reply regarding cooperation in redistributing YellOS with Designwerks computing hardware.

Following a review of the proposed terms of the agreement presented, YellowApple, Inc. agrees to the terms outlined, while also requesting access to the Assembly-level programming documentation offered by your company; YellowApple, Inc. will be receptive to any non-disclosure agreements required to facilitate receiving the aforementioned documentation, but with the requirement that YellowApple, Inc. be permitted to release YellOS drivers and compiler-optimization algorithms specific to your company's hardware under a license compatible with version 2 of the GNU General Public License, as per the licensing requirements of YellOS itself.

In regard to the physical hardware samples, the necessary payment of N$82044105 can be wired directly to a financial account (YellowApple, Inc. already holds an account with the Yohannesische Bundesbank, which should facilitate an expedient monetary transfer should Designwerks also hold an account with the Yohannesische Bundesbank), provided as a cryptographically-signed digital check, or retained in an Enterprise Account with the YellowApple, Inc. Financial Services Division.

YellowApple, Inc. has considered the offer of a formal partnership with Designwerks Computation. Market examination indicates that YellowApple, Inc. and Designwerks Computation are both hardware vendors and manufacturers with products in consumer, enterprise, and military markets; however, this overlap in product offerings can facilitate cooperation, with a goal of ensuring compatibility and interoperability between Designwerks and YellowApple, Inc. hardware products, while also providing for collaboration between YellowApple, Inc. and Designwerks regarding cooperatively-designed hardware platforms. Given the analysis of potential benefits associated with such a partnership, YellowApple, Inc. formally accepts the offer to enter into a corporate partnership with Designwerks Computation, with the hopes that such a partnership will facilitate unprecedented advances in computational science and engineering.

In order to facilitate rapid communication and collaboration between our two companies on future hardware and software projects, we are organizing a team of technical liasons from both the YellowApple, Inc. Software Development Division's YellOS Development Team and the YellowApple, Inc. Computing Hardware Division to work directly with your own software and hardware design teams, and likewise invite your company to similarly send technical representatives to work with our own development teams. This exchange of personnel should assist with ensuring a strong and healthy partnership between our two companies.

Relevant points of contact for various subjects are as follows:

» YellOS: Senior Kernel Hacker Cherry Swirl
» YellowApple, Inc. computing hardware: Senior Hardware Hacker Yohaan Laamat
» Licensing and legal concerns: Legal Specialist Michael Merlot
» General corporate information: Corporate Representative Colgate (myself)
» High-level corporate contact: Chief Secretary David Fearn
» CEO equivalent: Administrator Fostera Manzano

We look forward to doing business with you.

Sincerely,

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

After weeks of negotiation between delegates from the State Industries of Schultaria Prime and YellowApple Incorporated, Designwerks is pleased to announce the formation of a corporate partnership with YellowApple. As one of the largest software developers in the world, YellowApple's marketshare and corporate philosophy is well suited to Designwerks' efforts in reestablishing itself as the global leader of high-end computing hardware.

"This collaboration is exactly what's needed in today's economy," noted Claudia Westfall, Chief Executive Officer of the Schultarian Diode Company. "Working alongside YellowApple [Incorporated] will provide needed publicity for Schultarian technical firms, allowing Designwerks to invest more in research and development on the next generation of supercomputing platforms."

In honor of the collaboration a new project has been announced by Designwerks Computation: Project Beji. Beji is anticipated to be the smallest platform released by Designwerks. Geared towards customers looking for a balance between size and performance not found in conventional consumer electronics, the final product is expected to cost approximately 80 sm ($ 144.80). Although technical specifications have yet to be released, the design team has released a publicity photo of the most recent prototype.

For questions or comments regarding this press release, or future product releases, contact the Designwerks Internationale Public Relations Department at: dintlPR@dwrks.usp

forward with technology

Official message from the University of New Hope - Phoenixia

Dear sirs, on behalf of the board of science I contact you with a major problem. Since over 300 years there is a rivalry between the grand University of New Hope and the University of Kings Harbor. To gain the advantage in this rivalry we decided to upgrade our scientifical capacity, more specially we would like to invest in a Dalier Quantum PC (59 730 000 NS $), the Department of Science, Education, Culture & Sport decided to pay half of the costs so we can afford this system with ease.
Also the Department is very interested in future developments of your company.
To increase the compability please set up the YellOS System as default.
Please state as well how much the technological support would cost us so we can determine the use with the costs.
sincerely
Frederik Larson
President of the University of New Hope - Kingdom of Phoenixia - Region of the Aluvean Seas

Considering the potentially sensitive nature of your company's requests, all correspondence will be conducted under heightened classification and with the explicit approval of at least the Chief Operations Officer.

A panel of technical experts from Designwerks Computation, the Schultarian Diode Company, Berylus Optics, Altunis Computation Corporation, and Tershal Scientific Instruments were gathered to assess the initial request. After a summary study of Aerospace Innovation's product lines and potential points of computer-assisted interaction (cockpit instrumentation, weapons targeting and communication, in-flight diagnostics, electronic countermeasures, control surface management, et al.), the assembled team has expressed their confidence in integrating Designwerks' hardware and software into existing airframe systems. The majority of this assessment, thus far, has been theoretical.

In the interest of providing the most thorough estimates possible, the panel has requested a brief summary of the components and technical expertise that is most in demand for Aerospace Innovation's current inventory. Anecdotally, the panel has envisioned the following considerations:

  • The cost of upgrading cabin displays with the latest in military-spec digital instrumentation and integrated HUD holography is considered to be most trivial expenditure and upgrade. Based on systems complexity, an estimate of approximately 0.3 - 0.55 % of the sale price per unit is considered to be the optimal cost using components already tested and utilized by the Schultarian Defense Forces.

  • Avionic systems, in particular control surface assistance, would be the most challenging aspect for Schultarian software developers. In order to insure seamless integration of our technology to the aircraft's physical flight envelope, Designwerks would require several thousand hours of theoretical and practical aerodynamic data using locally calibrated diagnostic equipment. Additionally, changes to power plants and weapon systems will have to be modeled separately to insure optimal efficiency. Depending on sales volume, initial estimates for each airframe range between 1.6 - 2.1 % of the sale price.

  • Physical hardware, though the specialty of Designwerks Computation, is one of the more difficult areas to model. Although the division offers a very reliable line of computers that are highly tolerant of extreme temperatures, pressures, moisture exposure, and electromagnetic flux, the panel wants to insure that each product has the best and most capable machine for each airframe. Considering the diversity of roles each aircraft is intended to perform, an optimal computer for the ER-1's command and control systems might need to be custom-tailored while the T-1 and A-1 platforms could easily integrate SPX-1 architecture to their intended missions with no modifications. Further examination will need to be conducted so the best possible technology will be mated to the right product, but 4.25 - 7.0 % of the current sale price per unit is to be the maximum expected cost.

We hope these theoretical estimates are enough to engage in further dialog. In the interest of refining the costs more precisely, we formally invite your company to bring a representative sample of your current product lines, along with company test pilots, corporate officers, and maintenance staff, to the Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories in central Schultaria Prime for further aerodynamic and technical analysis. In lieu of payment for leasing the aforementioned aircraft, Designwerks shall compensate for all maintenance, staff accommodations, fuel, private transportation, and completely abrogate any and all consultancy fees once final estimates have been rendered.

We hope to hear from your office in the future, and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship.

Sincerely,

Linda Norov.

Subject: Purchase/Collaboration

We would like to inquire into a few things regarding your company. One is the purchase of one or more of your products, and one is about some specifications of your hardware. Let us start with the second one, as it will define the first one.

Ko-oren is an environmentally sound country, based on principles such as recycling etcetera. Computer parts do not wear out easily, but they are taken over by more powerful systems within a few years, usually. Therefore we would like to inquire if the hardware you offer can be disassembled and reused in different areas, or if we can upgrade hardware we already have (by that point). If you do not have a system such as this, are you willing to develop a system together with some of our top computer science faculties?

Based on your reaction, we might decide to purchase.

Thank you for your time,

Mr. Parasilasthen,

On behalf of the State Industries of Schultaria Prime, I would personally like to thank you for your letter regarding our product lines. With a marketplace that can be very competitive and offer unparalleled choices, we are humbled that your esteemed Board is interested in working with Designwerks. Therefore, I hope this brief missive will provide a satisfactory response to your queries. If not, please feel free to contact me or any representative from Designwerks Nume'kognaa (Computation) at your convenience, and we will do our best to address any issues that we have not described to your satisfaction.

One of primary ethics of Designwerks Nume'kognaa is to engineer our systems as robustly as possible for the expressed purpose of interacting with legacy hardware and competitive products as flawlessly as possible. This is especially evident in our Supercomputing and Specalized Computing product lines, where downtime due to hardware incompatibility can spell disaster for a customer. The SAMMUTUS, HPC, CHEMIR, and SPATEX Series utilized advanced components, but rely on chip interfaces and power tolerances that conform to industry standards. If necessary, any of the components between products can be swapped between systems; although it's typically not recommended to swap less powerful components into higher-performance machines.

There are, however, certain components to individual product lines which are proprietary, and thus incompatible with non-Designwerks systems. Most of these issues involve lines that are built either as standalone products, or in areas where little competition currently exists. Due to a combination of small form factors and tight engineering tolerances, The Cimones Data Tablet and Sapanna Electronic Paper System utilized miniaturized versions of desktop hardware. While incompatible with conventional desktop machines, the CPU, RAM, and Video Accelerators use standard interfaces and conform to dimensions found in traditional laptop computers.

Likewise, many of Designwerks' more exotic systems are also limited in their interchangeability. Due to RAM bandwidth constraints, combined with a need for specialized interfaces to handle the polynomial processing power of quantum-based CPUs, the QUANVER and DALIER Supercomputers are essentially designed from the inside out as separate machines. Though the RAM and CPU interfaces are proprietary, and the machines utilize faster telecommunications equipment to handle high-load processing situations, the disk and input/output interfaces for both machines are similar to the HPC and CHEMIR.

If the following devices still do not satisfy your request for a powerful, yet interchangeable, machine, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime are willing to help develop a new computer from the ground up. Our engineers are willing to collaborate with faculty from the Universities of Ko-oren, along with representatives from YellowApple Incorporated, to build a modular computer series more in line with ecologically conscious consumers such as your esteemed institution.

We hope to hear from you shortly, and look forward to any future replies.

Sincerely,

Glenn Turasky.

Mr Turasky,

Thank you for your response. We had honestly not expected you could comply to our wishes this well. We are extremely delighted you are willing to cooperate to create a new series that suits us completely - and hopefully not just us, but many more of your customers in the future. We are planning to create a system that might not be completely compatible with the entire market, but a system that can be modified, updated and abolished (in case it is outdated to such an extent a completely new system is needed). If it is okay with you, we can send some of our top students and engineers to your company to develop the new system.

Sincerely,

Subject: Project Malvar.

Mr. Parasilasthen,

Thank you for such a quick and courteous reply, and we hope that cooperation between Designwerks and the state-managed universities of the Meritocratic Utopia will yield productive results for both of our respective institutions.

In the interest of full technical disclosure, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime has previously invested in a series of concept desktops that might serve as a genetic launchpad of sorts. Designwerks Nume'kognaa has experimented with the idea of modular, hot-swapping, computing systems for consumer and institutional use. The most promising of these systems, Project Malvar, almost surpassed the prototype stage before being dropped in favor of the Cimones Mk. I. Utilizing a motherboard with a protective plastic casing for daily wear, uniform docking ports, and a standardized form factor, individual users could purchase modules to suit their specific requirements. Disk drives, RAM modules, video cards, processor booster packs, and a variety of other peripherals could be mounted and removed as needed without disrupting the computer's core operation.

Image
Malvar prototype with four modules and 39 cm integrated monochrome screen (SDC 86)

Unfortunately, the initial prototype was beset with problems. Because of it's early development, industry standard form factors for mounting the individual modules were still not in full scale production, and demanded more power than could be safely managed with an integrated machine. Bandwidth requirements for each module were too high to be managed by the technology of the day, which made the machine far slower than less costly competitors. Finally, a lack of domestic consumer enthusiasm prompted researchers and design engineers to look at other technologies to build the nation's electronics industry.

With the widespread use of newer and far more energy-efficient electronics, combined with faster bit rates from modern communications buses, our design teams feel confident that the time is right to revive the Malvar project for your specific requirements. Individual components, conforming to the same dimensions and hardware tolerances, can be swapped out with relative ease while also being upgraded and modified as necessary to suit the end user's requirements. If you feel that this project may not be sufficient for your needs, please let us know and we'll do our utmost to incorporate all of your design considerations into a system that'll best fit you.

We hope to hear from you very soon, and this is be beginning of a sustained, meaningful, collaboration between the State Industries of Schultaria Prime and the Ko-oren University System.

Sincerely,

Glenn Turasky.
