Spacing

Postby Todd McCloud » Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:35 pm

Is it just me, or is the line spacing on NS larger? You know, like the spacing from line of text to line of text. Noticed it a few minutes ago.

Seems to be more or less back to where it was from before now. Huh.

It went from 1.00 to 1.50 and then back to 1.25 when I realized how huge that looked in Internet Explorer.

I still get that space between new posts and old posts on IE. Doesn't do that for other browsers.

I never noticed anything. Did this all happen in the last few days, going from 1.00 to 1.50 and 1.25?

A Classless Society wrote:People still use IE? :palm:

Meh, it's not too much worse than most of the other browsers. I don't even use a Microsoft OS on my Laptop, so it's not an option for me. However, my university has Windows computers, and when given the choice between Explorer, Chrome and Firefox, I would choose Explorer on those since Firefox could be so slow (until a pretty recent update) and I don't trust a Google browser to not record every web page I visit to know what kind of spam I should get in my mail.
Wait an hour, and it will be now again

Yeah, I mean, a 1993 Toyota Camery works just fine too. But wouldn't you rather a 2012 Mazda 6? Or maybe a 2010 Audi A4? How about a new 2013 Jeep Wrangler? Or perhaps a 2011 Dodge Ram? Yeah...that's the comparison...

If you're a web developer, you grow to hate it because your site looks fine in every other browser but requires lots of special attention to work properly in IE. Some things just won't work in IE, so rather than offer up a feature that's broken for some users, you don't offer it at all. It's the lowest common denominator of browsers.

If you're a user, I agree that IE is fine as a browser. But it's only fine because people like me spend a lot of time working around its bugs, and the web would be better if it would just go away.

+1

This and a dozen other reason's I could compile why IE is, even today, a relic of Microsoft's inability to adapt to modern coding and software intergration. They always have to do things their way. Not to mention IE's code hasn't changed much since XP came out :o

It's one of the worst standard-compliant web browsers out there. It works because developers spend waste a great deal of time making sure their code works specifically in Internet Explorer browsers. The only reason most sites look perfectly fine is because of all the "fixes" web designers have to use to make their layouts work in Internet Explorer.

One of the foundations of CSS (web styling) is what's called the "Box Model", where every element is treated as if it sits inside its own box. Internet Explorer can't even get this right. It can't even do basic math in this respect. It is awful.

The world of web design would be a better place without IE.

Personally, I'm a fan of making good pages as they should be.

And then I check it out on IE. And then I think it looks terrible. But I leave it as it is, and encourage my visitors to use a proper browser if they want to see things properly :)

...except when I get paid. In that case, I have to make a separate style sheet for IE :eyebrow: Which I don't make as good as the original.
The problem with a UDP joke is that you have no idea if people got it.

Oh, this is the IE complaint thread.

Yes, IE was horrible. Especially when IE6 was still in use a lot around the world (now mostly in China still http://www.ie6countdown.com/ ). It's getting slightly better though with the newer versions like 9.

At my work we tend to develop with Chrome and Firefox and only after that works correctly we see what kind of changes we need to make it fit in a modern version of IE.

It gets better with every version, but that's not saying much. Take favicons, for example. Every other browser supports PNGs except IE, which only supports the ancient .ico format. Not even IE10 supports PNGs. Historically you could work around this by using conditional comments to supply an .ico to IE and a PNG to everyone else, but IE10 doesn't support conditional comments, either. So you have to give everyone the lowest common denominator experience (.ico) or else spend lots of time weaving hackery magic to detect and work around IE.
