Basics to IRC

The Basics
IRC is one of the oldest methods of instant communication over the internet. Used by millions of people worldwide, with IRC still maintaining its popularity across several different genres. Anyway, let's get into how to use IRC. First, a few definitions*:

Channel - One of the many places where discussions take place, each discussion area is called a channel.
Query - A private message between two users.
Op (Short for Operator) - A 'moderator' of a channel. They can remove and/or ban troublemakers and allow/disallow others from speaking.
Voice - If a user is 'voiced' they can speak if the channel is muted.
Kick - A user is removed from the channel temporarily. Kicks may often follow a ban.
Ban - When a user is prevented from entering a channel.
Identify/Identified - When a user has 'logged into' their IRC account, which verifies their identity and activates any flags set on their host name.
Flags - A flag set on either a channel or a user. An example of a channel flag is muting (also know as moderating) the channel. An example of a user flag is when a user is given 'Auto-Voice' - which allows them to receive voice automatically upon identification.
Registered - When a user has registered their nickname to the server. This can prevent names from being stolen.
Ghost - A command that allows a user to force quit another user that is either using their nickname or if they have connection issues which causes there to be a 'ghost' of them.

Using IRC
First, you need to know what IRC server to use. The most commonly used NationStates IRC channel servers are irc://irc.esper.net and irc://irc.gamesurge.net . So first, you need to know what server the channel you want to join is located on. Upon joining an IRC server - you can join channels using the '/join' command*. You can query a user by using the /query 'nickname' command*. Anyway, now let's get into more detail, one of the first things you should do when using IRC, and it's something that's strongly advised, is to register your nick. This prevents it from being stolen (since the not identifying) could be seen as a giveaway.

Securing your Nickname
Registering your nickname is a vital way to prevent your nickname being stolen on IRC. The ways to do this vary by server. The commands for Esper and Gamesurge as as follows, however (you type these when you join the server):

Esper:
/msg nickserv REGISTER passwordgoeshere emailgoeshere

Gamesurge:
/msg authserv@services.gamesurge.net REGISTER nicknamegoeshere passwordgoeshere emailgoeshere

It also advised to identify whenever you log onto IRC. The commands work in a similar way to the register, only slightly more simple.

Esper:
/msg nickserv identify passwordgoeshere

Gamesurge:
/msg authserv AUTH nicknamegoeshere passwordgoeshere

* Definitions may vary by server. They should be correct for both Esper and Gamesurge, however.

IRC Advanced

Now that you know how to use IRC and the basic terns and how to use it, let's move onto some more advanced topics. This post contains information about Web Clients vs Non-Web Clients, operator commands, and basic info to setting flags (both user based and channel based).

Operator Commands
So, you're an operator of a channel? Great. Then this is the section for you if you're unsure on the powers you have, then this will hopefully explain them. First, remember there are different ranks of operators. Normal OP's can traditionally voice/autovoice/op at will, however, they may not be able to set flags. On Esper for example, OP's need to be given an additional 'user flag' to be able to set user flags on other users. Anyway, let's get into what Operators can normally do. Operators can use the kick or ban commands - which allows them to remove users from the channel, to be able to keep troublemakers out - they can also voice or devoice people (an unvoiced user would not be able to speak if the channel was set to moderated mode). So, how do I use these commands? Well, here's the answers.*

Voice/Devoice Commands

/msg chanserv VOICE #channelnamehere nick
/msg chanserv DEVOICE #channelnamehere nick

OP/Deop Commands

/msg chanserv OP #channelnamehere nick
/msg chanserv DEOP #channelnamehere nick

IRC Clients
There are two varieties of IRC clients used. One are web clients - commonly used ones are Mibbit and Chatzilla. The other types of IRC clients used are non-web based ones - such as mIRC, XChat and Colloquy - which is a Mac based client. There are a number of benefits to using non-web based clients, since they traditonally have a larger number of features available to use - including auto-identify, auto-join (joining channels automatically upon startup).
