Your Army in Early Modern Times

Postby The High Tatras » Tue Dec 25, 2012 4:32 pm

What did your army look like circa 1450-1700? Here's some of ours...

Knights of the Teutonic Order circa 15th century.

A revolting peasant army from the High Tatras during the German Peasant's War of 1524-1525.

Here is another Landsknecht with a kriegsmesser sword and a matchlock harquebus.

Knights?!? In just chainmail?!? those fellows would be slaughtered they would!

Above is the perfect example of very early modern era Imerian Eröfringsmän or "Conquers" in English. Sallets and Kettlehats had started to replace the old spangelhelmets and heavy hauberks were worn under wisbyharnesks or plate armour as firearms, crossbows and pikes slowly started to replace roundshields and axes, maces, poleaxes and other heavy melee weapons.

On horseback so were mounted men with pistols that rode into battle next to giant wardogs evolve from light cavalry with javelines and the more traditional heavy cavalryman with lance and sword had the armour on the horse slowly removed. In addition did massive amounts of small cannons replace balistas and the chariots and war mammoths vanished entirely from the battlefield even if attempts were made to no end to make mammoths into mobile cannon platforms.

The first modern army in Namorese history was the Republican National Army of the former Republic of Namor (1910-1950). Its soldiers were trained by foreign instructors.

In the early modern era, the Saurian Army had begun experiencing a major evolution, for by the 14th century, plate armor was increasing in use and chainmail was declining in application. The shield had also disappeared from the battlefield around this time period, for soldiers didn't need it. This freed up the other hand to use for the weapon and soon, soldiers started wielding two-handed battleaxes, warhammers, and greatswords.

Cavalry also evolved during this era, changing from largely light scouting forces to heavy shock troops easily capable of smashing through enemy lines. Towards the end of 14th century, another change was beginning to take shape. The appearance of the gun soon saw the declining need for armor as it was largely unable to absorb the bullets fired by earlier portable weapons. Armored plating and helmets were still used by pikedinos in order to protect them from the pistol fire and sword swings of enemy cavalry, but for the most part, the infantry evolved into massed ranks of soldiers firing sapient-portable firearms. First the arquebus and then the musket were employed by the changing Saurian army.

Christian navigators in the age of exploration received a hearty, "Welcome to Geletia!"

Today, Front Commander Camma is essentially indistinct from her forbearers of the Early-Modern era (except that she's using her ancestral blade to point the way for tens of millions of mechanised infantry).

Essentially, at the time in question, what is now Beddgelert-proper was dominated by the cleddyf mawr, falx, spear, and longbow. Lots of tartan, stripes, hoops, infinite loops and triskelions; music provided by carnyces, pibgorns, great-pipes, bombards, and tabwrdd; and every soldier drunk on wine, ale, and the water of life; and then 'new' Europeans arrived with all their muskety cannony gubbins, and we had a bad couple of centuries in spite of our clay grenades and wildly unreliable rockets.

We never had an 'early modern times' since we were on a completely different planet than earth.

But during our nation's equivelant of that year (By that I mean what they looked like during the exact same time you humans looked like that. Like.. while you humans were in the early modern era our planet at the exact sime time period.. Urgh, you know what I mean.) our army looked something like this:

A watercolor painting of warriors of The Volsci Host riding across the the plains prior to their unification. It wasn't particularly an 'army', as so much as groups of armed men who followed their Chief into battle. Needless to say, our military wasn't exactly respected as everybody began to modernize and have actual standing military's.

During the medieval periods, the TBRE was still organized into warrior bear clans that followed a strict code of armor. Military wear was mostly a militarized version of our national dress, the Velkarstern, which is a one-piece garment that is divided into two parts: the upper body is in the style of a single breasted tunic, and the lower body has long armored belt spats and a centre piece of cloth. As the Velkastern has lots of stripes and space for patterns, individual families had their own distinct pattern. Helmets resembling a Japanese Kabuto were worn, as well as a central armored breast plate. Swords and other weapons were hung from a belt.

Something more or less like this (Also disregard the date of Kalmarium entering FT stage in my nation's timeline as I plan to alter some things).

Early Kalmar Legionaries wore standard Kelrik-pattern power armor until the creation if the much more efficient Kerberos power armor in the 2400's IE.
Image

However for the armor worn in the Age of Terra, Scandinavian crusades under the Athrus Dynasty typically wore this standard armor set, which Athrus the Ultimate had created for the Terran Knights. As far as Imperial records are concerned, this is what we wore back in medieval times.
