About Us

Chartered over one hundred and twenty years ago by Central Director Merle Elliott Schultz, Designwerks has grown from modest beginnings to become the most successful collection of centrally-planned industrial enterprises in Gholgoth. From its origins as a government-sponsored regulatory trust for mining, shipbuilding, and metalworking, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime have grown phenomenally in size and complexity. As one of the newer divisions of Designwerks, Interkosmos has been an integral part of the Schultarian economy for over fifty years. While the division was originally designed to provide precision tooling and bespoke component manufacturing for international aerospace firms, growing public awareness of the Schultarian Space Program gave the companies under its control a chance to grow and develop their own independent technological base. From these humble beginnings, Interkosmos is currently responsible for 21.5% of all launches to Low Earth Orbit (by mass) within Gholgoth and is a global leader in the development of advanced heavy-lift launch vehicles.

Expansion was slow, but took on added importance following the nation's return to the Gholgoth Regional Alliance. In order to meet Gothic defense requirements, the state depended on Designwerks to draft, deliver, and maintain the Yongosona Defense Network - the largest and most comprehensive orbital command and control system in the region. This sudden influx of regional defense spending provided Interkosmos with unprecedented windfalls for research and development.

The Arketsan rocket series was Schultaria Prime's first successful attempt to create and develop an indigenous launch vehicle for commercial use. Unlike most other Schultarian products, this launch vehicle is not the exclusive product of local research and development. Instead of spending exorbitant sums on developing and testing novel, experimental, technologies, The State Industries of Schultaria Prime, with full consent from the Schultarian Scientific Collective and the National Assembly, purchased production rights to a large number of launch vehicles from firms well versed in spaceflight design expertise.

Based on the venerable R-7 Ballistic Missile, the designs purchased by Designwerks in exchange for a 30 year assembly subcontract with the firm OKB-1, the Arketsan has become the premier light-duty launch vehicle for the USSSP. From the original 1957 rocket that "launched ten billion minds into the stars", vast improvements have been made in the vehicle's reliability and operating costs. Existing engine assemblies, turbopumps, and plumbing have been modified to increase fuel delivery efficiency, control surfaces have been upgraded to provide more manueverability in the rocket's boost phase, and flight data computers have been completely upgraded to independently handle computational stresses during flight.

The Mark I variant is designed for customers who are looking for an affordable, reliable, launch vehicle designed for very light payloads - or a sub-orbital platform for new spacecraft designs.

The Proketsan was the first launch vehicle created by The State Industries of Schultaria Prime without assistance from foreign aerospace firms, although its outward design reflects direct inspiration from Soviet design principles. As an homage to the venerable “Proton” series, the Proketsan is designed around a rough approximation of its external characteristics. Despite a superficial resemblance to the Proton, this vehicle is a much more powerful and sophisticated launch platform. Underneath the Proketsan's skin - from the engines down to the smallest pipe fittings - have been re-engineered from the ground up to provide a launch vehicle with unparalleled reliability and cost effectiveness.

Payload adaptability.

One of the major disadvantages to most of the space vehicles sold by Designwerks has been to accommodate unusual payloads that can't conform to existing single-use launch systems. Designwerks' Engineers has attempted to alleviate this concern with larger launch platforms, such as the Youketsan and Nucliketsan, but such vehicles represent a considerable amount of expense and are only useful for very large or massive payloads. Analyzing the problem as objectively as possible, the Schultarian Space Administration's most respected aerospace engineers developed the Eaolenketsan as a solution to the payload conundrum.

Designed for unique space bound craft that can not mate onto other launch vehicles, this launch system has grown a reputation for versatility in the normally restrictive environment of spaceflight. From unusually large satellites to semi-winged reusable manned launch vehicles, this booster series will continue to fit the needs of aspiring space faring nations for years to come.

After the United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime successfully demonstrated the ability to produce an orbital-capable satellite, hostile forces attacked the Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories in an attempt to stifle Designwerks' space research. Although the effects of the attack were not strategically successful in curtailing Designwerks' commercial mandate or the State's attitudes towards aerospace engineering, the loss in life to the Schultarian Scientific Collective was devastating. In honor of their memory, and the tireless pursuits of their labor, The State Industries of Schultaria Prime, in cooperation with volunteers from the Gholgoth Regional Alliance, developed a new series of launch vehicles.

The Yuoketsan is an integral part of this effort. Officially, the Yuoketsan is part of the Komomere (Collective Memorial) space vehicle series project to honor the memory of those martyred at Eldaimovey. As a launch vehicle, it is a revolutionary contribution to Designwerks' vast array of launch vehicles. With almost seven times the throw weight of the Proketsan, the Yuoketsan was - for a brief period - the single most powerful launch vehicle on the planet. Though that mantle has been superseded by the Nucliketsan, it remains an enduring testament to the perseverance of Schultarian science and technology.

Developed under the cover of several dozen independent research projects, the Nucliketsan, formerly known as "Project Nucliox", was formally unveiled by Designwerks on Schultaria Prime's one hundred and tenth anniversary. Like the Yuoketsan, the research for this vehicle was developed by the surviving scientists and engineers from the Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories as part of the Komomere project. In absolute, the Nucliketsan is designed for nothing less than pure heavy lifting; a job which it does with absolutely no parallel to any other rocket on the planet. Left to its own power, the Nucliketsan is capable of launching the fully assembled mass of the historic International Space Station into Low Earth Orbit.

Although powerful, the Nucliketsan is also a very novel launch vehicle which uses a number of components that have yet to go into full-scale mass production. Any potential customers should be fully aware and willing to accept the extraordinary production latency before purchasing this product.

Interkosmos, in an effort to create a series of more efficient orbital delivery systems for its expanding space program, has spent 95 billion merlons to build a reusable space vehicle designed for both cargo service and passenger travel. With extensive support from the Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories, the original project was expected to take six years. On the day when the project was to be publicly announced, tragedy struck. In a series of coordinated terrorists attacks known as the Contact Day Massacre, hundreds of the nation's preeminent aerospace engineers and scientists were killed.

On the fifteenth anniversary of the Massacre, Interkosmos, The Haarvekord Family Foundation, and the Directors of the Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories christened the first prototype of Project Komomerenketsan. As a testament to the perseverance of the Schultarian scientific establishment, this space vehicle has become the vanguard of project Komomere - a galvanizing symbol of Schultaria Prime's commercial, intellectual, and political endurance.

Following the collapse of Catania-Marinov in 35 SDC, Schultaria Prime's earliest and most important ally before joining the New Alliance Treaty Organization, the pre-Ghothic Schultarian state lost its only source of strategic defense in a very dangerous international climate. Without the protection provided by the Marinovian nuclear umbrella, and instead of investing hundreds of billions of merlons in an unwieldy stockpile of ballistic missiles, the National Assembly established funding to create a comprehensive and reliable anti ballistic / satellite platform. As such, I am pleased to inform you that we shall be able to fulfill your request for ten such vehicles without any significant delays.

Unfortunately, however, the Nucliketsan request as ordered can not be honored by Designwerks Interkosmos. The purchase that you have requested, while quite generous, would take two thousand nine hundred and forty days (approximately eight years and three weeks) to fulfill - a length of time that our legal department has suggested would fall under the auspices of a long-term supply contract.

Due to the highly complex nature of the Nucliketsan, such a long-term order poses a liability for Interkosmos. We are willing to expand our manufacturing capabilities to accommodate the Torchwood Institute's request, but such an expansion will require increased capital investment from the State Industries of Schultaria Prime. Our Actuarial Department estimates that an increase by thirty-five percent (35 %) to a total cost of 5,913,000,000 sm ($ 10,702,530,000) per vehicle would be sufficient to expedite this order while providing other clients the opportunity to purchase the Nucliketsan.

Shalum, I am in the process of trying to find a series of station prototypes that might be suitable for your request, but expect a formal IC response with a few questions from Interkosmos requesting a few more firm details about what your nation is explicitly looking for. The same will go for the spacecraft - although I have a military design that I could reconfigure and repurpose for the deployment of people instead of scientific payloads or weaponry. If you check the Schultarian Armory Guide, there's a craft called Project Tla'voketsan (page 58-59) that might be useful. It can't go from the surface into orbit under it's own power (it'd need to be ferried either by a carrier rocket or the Komomerenketsan), but it's fully equipped to resist the radiation and hard vacuum of spaceflight.

My name is Margot Keefe, Chief Engineer of Habitation Dynamics (a wholly owned subsidiary of Designwerks Interkosmos). Your request for a space station contract has been transferred to us by the top leadership at Designwerks to develop the best possible platform to suit your needs. After reviewing the initial requests, our concepts and engineering departments would like to ask a few questions regarding your proposals.

In regards to your request for a defense system, what kind of particular threats does the Air Force expect to encounter by deploying this station?

If the threats are terrestrial in nature (e.g. ground or air launched anti-satellite weaponry), we may be able to modify some existing orbital ABM platforms to serve as the template for defense. If the project calls for more significant protection to the station and its components, such as radiation, ablative, or electromagnetic hardening, this will involve incorporating more novel technologies that will increase the cost of the station system.

Approximately how many personnel will be deployed to this station? How long will they be expected to serve for a typical tour of duty?

To properly design the station's environmental systems and logistical underpinnings, an accurate count of personnel is essential. Since this station will be a hermetically sealed ecological space, our engineers must know what kinds of resources will be necessary to sustain normal crew loads. If the number of personnel is large enough that constant orbital resupply will be cost prohibitive, then spaces such as hydroponics facilities, water and solid waste recycling, and enhanced oxygen filtration systems will need to be built.

Crew fitness will also need to be taken into account. If personnel are exposed to weightless for periods greater than 48 hours, muscles start to atrophy and bone structure begins to weaken. For a soldier, a lack of exposure to terrestrial gravity will severely deplete their combat effectiveness once on the planet's surface without mechanical supports, like combat exoskeletons. Our engineering departments can provide artificial gravity in the form of a slowly-rotating habitation ring, with additional exercise equipment included, to keep your personnel in reasonable health.

Is the hangar, as requested, expected to be an enclosed space or an exposed series of hard docking ports?

If the hangar is expected to be enclosed and pressurized to facilitate the maintenance of orbital vehicles, then extensive modeling and testing will need to be conducted to design proper airlocks, environmental systems, and redundant fire suppression mechanisms. The cost for developing a pressurized internal hangar, if requested, could amount up to 75% of the station's final costs. An exposed series of hard docking ports, while forcing personnel to conduct spacewalks to perform necessary maintenance, would be a much cheaper solution that involves existing tried and tested technologies.

We hope that we can provide you with the absolute best solution for your request, and hope these questions will make the final product fully suited to your nation's strategic aims.

I thank you for first asking me these questions in detail and second for taking the time on all of you considerations of the station.

On the subject of defense we do expect threats to be terrestrial in nature and would like some sort of missle system to protect the station. We would also like radiaton and electromagnetic protection for the station.

We approximate about 3000 people may be on the station (1000 Crew, matineence, etc) (2000 marines) if this is to much to ask let me know ASAP we wish that all of the thing mentioned may be on the station as it will be constantly supplied including the gravitational ring.

The hangers will be inside the station and we wish them to be able to hold atleast 10 Small orbital ships. The external walkways will also be needed for repair.

Also n advance I wire you 500 billion dollars for a down payment
