Remove ads!

Postby [violet] » Thu Nov 29, 2012 5:34 pm

Short version: You can now remove ads from the site for the modest sum of $2.99 (US).

http://www.nationstates.net/page=store

Long version: Currently, NationStates is 100% ad-supported. This is not ideal because some people don't like ads and would prefer to support the site directly. Also, it's kind of nerve-wracking for us to be 100% dependent on one revenue source, since if that disappears, we can't pay the bills.

So now you can now pay $2.99 to enjoy the site without ads! This works on a per-nation basis and lasts forever.

You can also buy it for another nation as a gift.

I'm pre-announcing it here ahead of a public unveiling on the News page so we can be sure it's all working. I don't think there are any bugs left, but if so, please report them! I will fix up any mistakes. (You should probably not go crazy with purchases, if you're considering doing that, for the first few days of testing.)

There are a few more details on the store page under "Terms & Conditions".

A lot of people have suggested we do this (or a donations page) for a long time, so hopefully it works out! Please let me know of any questions or issues, thanks!

That may very well be the easiest decision I've ever made in this game.

EDIT: By the way, it appears to be working perfectly.

Just out of curiosity, how much money do you get from ads?

If you don't like having them gone, you can re-enable them in your settings page, haha.

No, but paying this will make it so you don't have the ads. If we needed to remove them, I'd be sad. I'm not entirely sure I'll even have $3 once I put gas in my car. :P

Bought, but I do hope this isn't the beginning of a road to something similar to NS2.

I purchased but terms and conditions don't say anything about personal information - what do you do with it etc after a purchase has been made? Will our paypal accounts be hounded in the future now that they are linked to the nation or the nation we gift to?

Is there any other way you can set up additional payment methods, such as Google Wallet or Amazon Payments? I would love to buy some subscriptions, but I have no intention of ever dealing with PayPal again. :|

Yeah, I wish I could use the old fashioned credit card(Mastercard).

Though, considering we have quite the dutch user base here, iDEAL might be an option? :p ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDEAL )

Good questions. No transaction details are recorded in nations, only that it now owns that purchase, which means no personal information from PayPal is viewable by moderators. But PayPal does transmit your name & email address, which the servers records in case something goes wrong and I need to dig through it later to figure out what happened.

So admins can figure out a purchaser's name & email address, but no other personal info, while mods don't have access to that at all.

I'm not sure what you mean by hounding PayPal accounts, but the data is only used for verifying the purchase. You're not added to a mailing list or anything like that. I guess we should say this explicitly!

I completely sympathize, but PayPal is the only one that seems to be open to Australian-based vendors. So we're kind of stuck with them.

I'm pretty sure you can. You don't need an actual PayPal account any more. You can just enter card details.

The store should sell NationStates Merchendise. I'd pay good money for a NS T-Shirt.

:)
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

Still seeing ads forum side. Nice feature but I would like to remove them when I visit the NS forum as well.

Some ppl were saying the same thing on the IRC too. I'm sure a shirt with the jennifer government logo on it would sell perhaps? Speaking of which, i still see the ad for that, i guess that doesn't come off with the package? :)

It is nice to see the site ad-free. Sadly, I have to keep them on, to keep an eye out for problems.

The server wasn't syncing to the forum properly after a purchase; now fixed.

It doesn't, no. The credit box stays in the side panel; the Google ads in the game & forums are banished.

In a few months, the NS Store will feature a lot more than just ad removal. :p

But hey, AdblockPlus is already free. :p
