Game Mod Olympics: Stiff Upper Brit

Postby [violet] » Mon Nov 26, 2012 11:19 pm

Welcome! Welcome to this, the Games of the XIII Game Mod Olympiad! And what a pleasure it is to be in the grand old mother country for this one. Gaze around and just imagine the sweeping vistas and glorious architecture you could be admiring if they weren't obscured by all this drizzle and mist!

And how appropriate that we have a new competitor from the host country: Sedgistan! New to the field since the previous Olympics, Sedgistan is out to prove he's more than just a token entry included out of hope rather than expectation from a country with an unparalleled history of sporting disappointment. No, he's here to play! And look at him bouncing around the arena, draped in his flag! The other Game Mods smile benignly, happy to let the new puppy have his moment.

But it's quickly on to business. Last Olympics, Katganistan overcame a slow start to claim a record-equalling 11 gold medals, and the look in her eyes suggests it's going to be more of the same today. But look at Frisbeeteria! There are gasps from the crowd as Fris strips off his tracksuit to reveal a bulging new physique. He's been working out and he's not afraid to show it! The arena echoes with wolf whistles and shrieks as officials implore Frisbeeteria to put on some shorts.

Reploid Productions is bouncing on her toes, which if I'm not mistaken are carbon-polymer prostheses. They said Reppy was too old for another Olympics, but they didn't count on her ability and willingness to replace her worn-out body with superior machine-crafted alternatives! Whether that's even legal, you have to admire her determination!

The first events are two crowd favorites, "Issues Accepted" and "Issues Processed!" And awwww, look, new competitor/mascot Sedgistan is lining up amongst the other mods as if he really thinks he has a chance! That's so cute.

--- Issues Processed ---
1687 : Sedgistan
445 : Frisbeeteria
249 : Reploid Productions
14 : Kryozerkia
1 : Kindly Professor Hell

--- Issues Accepted ---
25 : Sedgistan
19 : Frisbeeteria
14 : Reploid Productions
1 : The Most Glorious Hack

What a boilover! The new kid has done it! The crowd goes wild, savoring its first taste of success of any kind, really, in a very long time! Enjoy it, folks! It may have to last you a lifetime!

Fris warms down with a few stretches by the fence, much to the alarm of nearby observers, who continue to implore him to get dressed. Reploid Productions has the oxy welder out and is making a few adjustments to those prosthetic toes. These guys look ready to restore the natural order of things!

And don't write off Kat! She's still at the starting line of the first event with a knowing smile on her face. Could she... could she be giving them a head start?

--- Nation Edits ---
1629 : Sedgistan
523 : Katganistan
506 : Dread Lady Nathicana
490 : Frisbeeteria
441 : Kryozerkia

Bang! And Katganistan leaps out of the blocks! She's starting from the other side of the stadium and needs to negotiate several other events before reaching this one, but by golly she's in the race! She's passing Kryo! Passing Fris! She's almost got Nathi... she's not going to make it... oh! Out come the claws! We're going to need a medic here!

But Kat has done it! She's passed Nathi to claim... second? Wait a minute. We need to check the results here. The scoreboard is showing Sedgistan won by several laps but surely that's some kind of... no? No?

Sedgistan wins again! Well how about that! They do say luck comes in threes!

After three events:

Sedgistan: 3 gold
Frisbeeteria: 2 silver
Katganistan: 1 silver
Reploid Productions[b]: 2 bronze
[b]Dread Lady Nathicana
: 1 bronze

It's smiles all around, because really, who can't be pleased to see the new kid grab a couple of lucky medals.

Arguably the centerpiece of the Games, it's the famous Help Requests!

--- Help Requests Processed ---
10887 : Sedgistan
3219 : Kryozerkia
2552 : Frisbeeteria
2403 : Katganistan
2160 : NERVUN
1745 : Reploid Productions
627 : Euroslavia
596 : Dread Lady Nathicana
230 : Tsaraine
150 : Ardchoille

--- Help Requests Resolved ---
3831 : Sedgistan
1378 : Kryozerkia
1176 : Katganistan
1169 : Frisbeeteria
836 : NERVUN
318 : Reploid Productions
201 : Euroslavia
148 : Dread Lady Nathicana
42 : Flibbleites
38 : Ardchoille

Sedgistan blitzes! It's not even close! The crowd goes into paroxysms of joy, but come on! This is getting a bit ridiculous! You're the host nation, for God's sake! You're not supposed to take all the medals for yourselves!

Sedgistan: 5 gold
Frisbeeteria: 2 silver, 1 bronze
Kryozerkia: 2 silver
Katganistan: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Reploid Productions[b]: 2 bronze
[b]Dread Lady Nathicana
: 1 bronze

Kryo gets on the leaderboard with two solid performances, and NERVUN is snapping at people's heels. Don't get too close to Reppy's, Nerv; they can snap back!

Oh look at this! Frisbeeteria is getting all up in Sedgistan's face! He just can't believe that this young whippersnapper is outperforming him! And frankly I have to agree! Sedgistan must weigh about as much as one of Frisbeeteria's highly toned buttocks!

Let's see who can stand up during the heavyweight World Assembly enforcement events!

--- WA Cheat Checks ---

1058 : Sedgistan
419 : Frisbeeteria
159 : Reploid Productions
137 : NERVUN
57 : Kryozerkia
57 : Euroslavia

Sedge can! All goodwill from the other competitors has completely evaporated, but Sedgistan doesn't notice! He's laughing and shaking hands! Someone is seriously going to punch that guy in the face soon!

Sedgistan: 8 gold
Frisbeeteria: 5 silver, 1 bronze
Kryozerkia: 2 silver
Katganistan: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Reploid Productions[b]: 5 bronze
[b]Dread Lady Nathicana
: 1 bronze

And that someone might be Katganistan! She's just realized that her world record 11 golds could be in danger!

On to the gripping Life & Death events...

--- Nations Deleted ---
2465 : Sedgistan
1631 : Frisbeeteria

435 : Reploid Productions

--- Nations Restored ---
74 : Frisbeeteria
34 : Sedgistan
31 : Katganistan
7 : Kryozerkia
6 : NERVUN

Sedgistan claims the Deletions, but no-one tells him that we're still doing Restorations, and the event is nearly over before he notices! For once, there's a new national anthem booming around the stadium! Some might say that "I'm Too Sexy" is an odd choice of song, but after listening to that Sedgistan dirge over and over, I think we can agree it's a real relief!

--- WA Proposals Removed ---
714 : Kryozerkia
239 : Sedgistan
154 : Flibbleites
111 : NERVUN
28 : Ardchoille

Oh! What's this? While everyone is cringing under Fris's national anthem, another event has started! Shouldn't this... doesn't this belong with the other WA events? I think they moved it while Sedge wasn't looking! Yes, you can call these Game Mods a lot of things, and one of those things should be "crafty!"

Gold for Kryo, and Flib gets on the board! Kat's looking a lot more at ease, thinking her record of 11 gold medals is safe. But there are still 8 events to go!

Sedgistan: 9 gold, 2 silver
Frisbeeteria: 1 gold, 6 silver, 1 bronze
Kryozerkia: 1 gold, 2 silver
Katganistan: 1 silver, 3 bronze
Reploid Productions[b]: 5 bronze
[b]Flibbleites
: 1 bronze
Dread Lady Nathicana: 1 bronze

Now for the regional events! These are held in picturesque rural areas, where free-roaming cows and sheep are an ever-present menace.

--- RMB Deletions ---
1531 : Sedgistan
368 : NERVUN
248 : Frisbeeteria

--- RMB Posts ---
248 : Sedgistan
108 : Frisbeeteria
62 : Katganistan
45 : Reploid Productions
20 : NERVUN

Sedge's familiarity with the host country comes into play as he easily leaps the wandering sheep and evades the razor-sharp tentacles of several murderous cows! Unfortunately Katganistan is not so lucky, and our thoughts are with her loved ones during this difficult time. But look at all those gold medals! Sedgistan can't hold them all at once! I mean literally! He really needs to bulk up!

Sedgistan: 13 gold, 2 silver
Frisbeeteria: 1 gold, 8 silver, 3 bronze
Kryozerkia: 1 gold, 3 silver
Katganistan: 1 silver, 4 bronze
NERVUN: 1 silver
Reploid Productions[b]: 5 bronze
[b]Euroslavia
: 1 bronze
Flibbleites: 1 bronze
Dread Lady Nathicana: 1 bronze

And there's Kat's record! If she wasn't recovering from a very serious cow infestation, she would have a lot to say! Like how come there are so many little events now? There weren't this many when she was on top a few years back!

We're into the final stretch!

Sedgistan is dragged away by officials, protesting that he be allowed to keep competing until he breaks 100,000 mod actions! Sorry, buddy! Leave something for next time!

The final standings:

Sedgistan: 17 gold, 2 silver (last time: Did Not Compete)
Frisbeeteria: 1 gold, 11 silver, 4 bronze (0-0-0)
Kryozerkia: 1 gold, 7 silver (1-8-4)
Katganistan: 1 silver, 4 bronze (11-3-0)
NERVUN: 1 silver (0-0-2)
Reploid Productions: 5 bronze (3-2-6)
Euroslavia: 1 bronze (0-0-1)
Flibbleites: 1 bronze (0-0-0)
Dread Lady Nathicana: 1 bronze (0-0-0)

Sedgistan takes an astonishing seventeen out of nineteen possible medals! The only way anyone will beat that is if next Olympics the organizers deliberately pick and choose which events to hold! Which, if I know them, they are totally prepared to do!

Frisbeeteria oozes frustration from every pore of his body, which is becoming something of a slip hazard, but he should be very proud of that performance! And Kryo delivers yet again! What endurance! But don't forget our whole pantheon of mods, each of whom deserves a round of applause!

Like our site? Thank a mod today!

Thank you, mods!

As my years on NS roll by, I have found something of greater value than medals and fleeting popular acclaim.

Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was or where I put it.

My rocket boosters and the anti-grav upgrade for the legs got lost in the mail and I had to spend a ton of time reaming the manufacturer over it, clearly contributing to Sedge having free reign with the tasklist.

Here's the skinny: Famous is relative. Mostly to where you play on the game, what circles you move in, whether or not it's forum or game or what not, and what you pay attention to with what frequency. Not to mention, when you joined, and who was most active during your most memorable period of activity.

We're all players here, to one degree or another, whatever part of NS we're participating in, and we all have a different outlook on the question at hand. And while it's nice to give a nod to folks we remember and who've passed on to other things, or fun to point out those who've been forcibly moved on due to their behavior - whether it amused us or not - this kind of boils down to no more of a 'lists' and 'ego-massaging' exercise. And I'ma be the buzzkill to put the lid on it.

You can deposit your complaints in the appropriate receptacle.

hmmmmmm.....so mods get to ego-massage yet us plebs aren't.

I'm not in it for ego-massaging. I can't think of any who are. Nor is this a 'who do you think is' thread. It's something violet has done for fun, for years.

The thread you referenced had turned into a 'me me, what about me' bit more than anything, and was generally spam. Sorry to disappoint, but you've had plenty of threads offering acclaims and awards and such to outstanding players that the community appreciates for various reasons that have been left entirely alone, and in fact, encouraged.

So much for inequality, thank you for your input.

As for Sedge - yes in fact, he has been wired to the server, does mod in his sleep, and is in fact, an experimental cyborg that Max has been working on for the past decade and kept in his basement. And we are all terrified by that. >_>

Well pluck my feathers and fry me up for a KFC dinner, that was a truly impressive showing by Sedge. Mind you, I wasn't even aware we had a hundred thousand moderator actions to be done... his ability to hold down a steady job and be a Mod is truly inexplicable.

Cloning.

I bet on cloning.

hmmmmmm.....so mods get to ego-massage yet us plebs aren't.

Yes yes of course it is. How silly for anyone to think otherwise.
