Christmas Tree Discussion

Postby The Cosmos » Sat Nov 24, 2012 4:32 pm

Describe your Christmas tree tradition. Do you put up a real or fake tree? When do you put it up? How do you decorate it? Do you put up a tree at all?

I'll buy a fake one. I think the cutting of real trees just for this purpose should be banned to protect the nature.

Uh... You do realize that either way, something in nature will be destroyed to make the materials for the fake trees, right?

Out back my house has about 20 pine trees.
5 of them are about 5 metres high, another 5 about 3 metres, and the rest are 2 or 1 metres.
Every year what we do with the bigger trees is my sister climbs to the top with a rope, ties it around the tree, chucks me the other end of the rope, climbs down, I pull on the rope, and then she grabs an axe and cuts it down.
We give out the trees to extended family and friends, as well as our neighbors, and one gets put in our lounge.

Oh yes, and the trees are absolutely illegal. Ftp.

Yeah, trees which are made out of cheap plastic which environmentalists protest against all the time because the waste gets sent to 3rd world nations, killing animals and people.
You're best off doing what my family does.
Cut down a few trees in the forest but make sure that larger amount will grow next year.
It's called sustainability.

Christmas Tree Discussion.

Every year, my wife says that we will buy a Xmas tree around 12/10-12/15. And it must be at least 6ft tall, and must look a certain way. End of discussion.

In my area, we use fake trees after Thanksgiving.

Reason 1: 'Cause there's no pine trees anywhere near Buenos Aires.
Reason 2: 'Cause we Argies don't celebrate Thanksgiving, nor do we eat turkey.
Reason 3: 'Cause it's cleaner and prettier than any tree I could probably purchase. Not to mention it can actually hold every single Christmas tree accessory without a single branch breaking.

I'm a minority, when it comes to this.

We buy a real tree, and we put it up after Thanksgiving, sometime in December, like December 1st.

We decorate it with some lights and then those other ornaments and an angel at the top.

We also put the gifts we buy for each other under the tree as the days go on, and "Santa" puts the rest of the gifts that he got for us allegedly, and he puts them there on Christmas Eve night, and, when I wake up, all of the presents are there.

We used to have a real tree at our old house, but one year my aunt catalog-ordered a fake tree, which was mysteriously delayed. She called the company and they sent another, but then the original also arrived, so she had two and gave us the other. Since then, we've used that same tree, which would have been necessary anyway since we had increasing numbers of heavy ornaments which the natural trees we bought in the past were becoming unable to support. The light strings that came pre-wired have been steadily failing to we keep stringing more each year, so the 'tree' by now is almost half light wire, although it's hard to tell once the ornaments are attached.

Tree normally goes up after Thanksgiving, and it usually takes a full weekend to get the decorations up across the house, between the tree, garlands, snow village, and other miscellaneous decorations. We also started wrapping the trees out front with lights, but that's no longer a Christmas thing since we just leave them there year-round. The decorations stay up until some point in January. We have a series of rotating themes that switch off every year, the current ones being Nutcracker, Santa, Hawaiian, and Chinese. From what I hear, Nutcracker is this year's theme (not at home at the moment).

True, but a real cut tree can be used for only one year, while a fake tree can last for many years.
I help set up a fake Christmas tree after Thanksgiving. There is no real point to preparing for Christmas before Advent begins

I don't put up any decorations at all. It's just me and my younger brother in my house. Seems rather pointless to decorate it.

My family uses a fake one. We put it up the day after Thanksgiving or the week after, and we usually leave it up until close to Valentines Day. We decorate it with ornaments and red, green, and white lights.

Sustainable forestry exists for a reason, you know, so you can have your Christmas tree without needing to worry about "destroyed nature".
Don't be deceived when our Revolution has finally been stamped out and they tell you things are better now even if there's no poverty to see, because the poverty's been hidden...even if you ever got more wages and could afford to buy more of these new and useless goods which these new industries foist on you, and even if it seems to you that "you never had so much" - that is only the slogan of those who have much more than you.

I put up a fake tree sometime in December. I do fake simply because it's easier, and evergreen trees are unheard of here in England. Apart from that massive row of conifers out back.
