After 40 years of supplying high quality, dependable ammunition to the Steelbaron civilian market, SAL has joined forces with Steelbaron Ammo Ltd to expand its markets in the Global ammunition arena. The intention is "Be the Best in the World."

Steelbaron Ammo, who is known today to be one of the top producers of quality military ammunition, has supplied SAL products since its origin. Now with the combined capacity of its Cape Steelhorn and Cape Steelair plants, the supply of hard to get SAL products should be more readily available.

SAL will go into 2007 with its most popular items in pistol and revolver ammunition concentrating on its core market of target, plinking, home defense and law enforcement. The selection of rifle specifications will be limited this year due to the decision to convert the production of its civilian rifle facility to military contracts. Future plans however include resurrecting, upgrading and expanding the production of these popular items.

Drawing on its decades of experience working with copper and copper alloy production technology in Steelbaron and Bindustan, Sultanate of Bindu (SOBAmmo, Inc.), Steelbaron Ammo operates large, exclusive ammunition production lines in their Cape Steelhorn and Cape Steelair plants. In these facilities, the Company develops and supplies all types of ammunition used in the military, from 5.56mm ammunition to 8-inch projectiles for howitzers. Steelbaron Ammo’s munitions are highly competitive in terms of product quality, price and delivery thanks to the Company's fully integrated production system which encompasses all production steps, from raw materials and parts to finished goods.

Steelbaron Ammo will continue to improve the performance of existing ammunition based on its integrated production system and sophisticated quality management system. The Company will also seek to extend its leadership in high-tech precision ammunition markets through continuous research and development that meets the new precision-oriented needs demanded in modern situations.

Apart from its military munitions, the commercial ammunition Steelbaron Ammo produces for hunting and competition shooting, under the brand name "SAL" (Sure-Alike Lethal), is gaining a solid reputation for excellent quality in the global market. To meet the growing demand for sporting ammunition, the Company has developed and exported over 100 various types of sporting ammunition, including Safire™ pistol and revolver cartridges.

Taking pride in the large number of types and zero-defect performance of its ammunition, Steelbaron Ammo uses carefully selected high-quality raw materials and ensures the high performance of sporting ammunitions by carrying out stringent quality inspections and target tests, all the same as those for military ammunition.

Steelbaron Ammo’s commercial ammunition plant has an additional advantage of having an integrated production system that strictly manages the process from raw-material selection to the loading of each cartridge. Used by M60 and M240 machine guns, and the M24 Sniper Weapon System. Intended for use against current and future light armored targets. The M993 offers the capability to defeat these targets at ranges 2 to 3 times that of previous AP ammunition.

The projectile assembly consists of a tungsten core penetrator contained in an aluminum cup and jacketed by tombac (similar to standard gilding metal, 90% copper, 10% zinc) clad steel. The shaped tungsten core provides enhanced armor penetration, representing a key departure from the current 7.62mm ball service round. The Bofors CGAB produced cartridge utilizes a conventional brass cartridge case with a Berdan primer. The propellant is a single base type manufactured by Bofors and the primer is manufactured by Dynamit Noble.

The M993 7.62mm AP Round is capable of penetrating a 7mm thick high hardness armor (HHA) plate at a distance of 500 meters from the muzzle of the weapon. This corresponds to 1/4" armor plate at a distance of 550m.

SAL M426 Duststeel™ 105mm APFSDS-T

The Armor Piercing, Fin Stabilized, Discarding Sabot - Tracer (APFSDS-T) cartridge is a type of kinetic energy (KE) armor defeating round. It consists of a fin stabilized sub projectile, a tracer assembly attached to the rear of the fin and a depleted uranium (DU) or tungsten penetrator with a ballistic tip to reduce drag.
It is currently recognized as the most effective tank-fired anti-armor round in the world.

SAL M426 Duststeel-HE™ 105mm High Explosive

ROLE :
SAL M426 Duststeel-HE™ HE ammunition is one of the six different types of projectiles fired from the 105 mm Indian field gun. This ammunition is employed to demolish army concentrations, fortifications, bunkers and many other defence installations. This is suitable for use both in the plains as well as mountains.

FUNCTION :
105 mm HE ammunition is filled with high explosives, (TNT) and is fitted with fuze 117 MK 20. On hitting the target, the fuze functions and ultimately denotes the explosive charge. The stability of the ammunition is achieved by the spin.

SAL M426 Duststeel-HESH™ 105mm High Explosive Squash Head

ROLE :
105 mm M426 HESH shells are one of the many types of projectiles fired from Armies field gun. This ammunition is employed primarily as an anti-tank ammunition and has a fixed charge. It gives a very effective anti-tank performance.

FUNCTION :
M426 HESH ammunition is having a thin walled ogive and the fuze is assembled at the base. The HC substitute composition filled at the nose of the ammn. gets squashed on the surface of the armour plate on impact and then the fuze functions. The detonation wave from the high explosive charge moves forward and a scab is detached from the armour plate which penetrates the tank body and incapacitates the tank. The stability of the ammn. is achieved by spin. A tracer fitted at the base of the shell traces the path of the projectile during flight.

ROLE :
Shell 105 mm IFG ILLG. belongs to the family of ILLG. Ammunition used extensively to support night warfare. It provides intense illumination for identification and engagement of all types of stationary and moving objects.

FUNCTION :
The ILLG. Shell is fired alongwith cartg. from Steelbaron Field Gun. It can achieve range upto 17 Kms. The variable ranges are achieved by addition of charges. The shell is fired with time mechanical fuze, present to ensure ejection at the desired height and range. This multipurpose round employs a shaped charge warhead to defeat both armor and “soft” targets. Full frontal activation makes the M830 effective on tanks with bar-type spoilers to counter HEAT projectiles. The activation turns the liner into a molten jet. When the jet strikes a target of armor plate, pressures in the range of hundreds of kilobars are produced at the point of contact. This pressure produces stresses far above the yield strength of steel, and the target material flows like a liquid out of the path of the jet (hydrodynamic penetration).

SAL M830 Shotsteel-Charlie™ HE-OR-T (High Explosive Obstacle Reduction) was developed to destroy obstacles and barriers (concrete, rock, dragon's teeth, etc.) set up to stop tanks.

The round is a modification of the SAL M830 Shotsteel-Bravo™ where the front fuze is replaced with a steel nose. This provides penetration into the obstacle before detonation.

SAL 125mm Kingsteel-HE™
125 mm Ammunition is used with Tank as main gun ammunition. The main gun 125 mm is having smooth bored barrel. Provision of sophisticated sighting system and automatic loading gear ensures high effective rate of fire of the order of 8 rounds per minute. Total 39 rounds are carried in the tank.

FUNCTION :
The shell is designed for destroying enemy shelters, vehicles and personnel. It consists of

SAL 125mm Kingsteel-HEAT™

125 mm Ammunition is used with tank as main gun ammunition. The gun 125 mm is having smooth bored barrel, sophisticated sighting system and automatic loading gear ensures high effective rate of fire order of 8 rounds/ min and total 39 rounds are carried in the tank.
The Ammunition is of separate loading type to suit auto loader and is fin stabilised.

The complete round comprises of two main points.
a) Cartridge It comprises of semi-combustible cartridge case, Primer GUV-7 and propellant with two igniters.
b) Shell 125 mm HEAT It comprises of Fuze B-15, filled shell, Tail unit Assy., Distance Tube and Tracer.

ROLE :
The main role of this ammunition is for direct fire against tank, SP gun, mortar and heavy armoured targets. It is effective against targets fitted with protective devices such has skirting plates and grids. It can also be used against concrete bunkers. The shell is aerodynamically stabilised by means of 6 fins initially folded which open in flight.

FUNCTION :
a) On firing, set back plunger of the fuze sets back and the ball gets rolled out from the cavity and unlocks the shutter. At the same time, set forward plunger also sets back. Due to taper on the plunger the ball moves in the cavity of the shutter and locks it in unarmed position.
b) During flight, when set back force ceases, set forward plunger re-asserts to its original position aided by the spring and set forward force, causing the ball to roll out, thus unlocking the shutter. The shutter slides in the armed position by torsion spring making detonator and crystal unsorted.
c) On impact, nose of the fuze is crushed in and the impact on piezo crystal generates an electric pulse which is passed to the detonator in the shutter. The detonator functions and detonation wave is passed to the booster. The booster pellet is positioned at the bottom of the lower pellet. A conical resonator having central hole accommodating the tip of the copper cone is placed at the base of the filling embedded in the lower pellet and thus the resonator helps in effective jet formation of detonation wave.

M714 155mm Coopersteel Tank smart munition

The M714 155mm Coopersteel projectile was the first smart artillery round ever developed. Its accuracy is measured in centimeters, and its lethality is impressive. Coopersteel is a cannon-launched, 155mm artillery projectile which guides itself to a laser-designated target. The munition is capable of defeating both armor and point targets at ranges of over six kilometers, and provides the battlefield commander with the unparalleled capability of utilizing artillery to the same effect as direct fire weapons and close air support. The system was employed during Operation Desert Storm, during which it met with great success. Coopersteel projectiles were used to destroy observation and border guard posts and forward radar installations during the first week of artillery attacks.

M714 155mm Coopersteel in action

The cannon-launched guided projectile (CLGP) M712 (Coopersteel ) is a 155-mm, separate-loading, laser-guided, HE projectile. It is heavier (137.6 pounds) and longer (54 inches) than the standard 155-mm projectile. The M712 projectile consists of three main sections: a guidance section (forward), warhead section (center), and control section (rear). The guidance section contains the seeker head assembly and the electronics assembly. The nose of the projectile houses a laser seeker in a plastic cone. The warhead section contains an HE antitank warhead consisting of 14.75 pounds of composition B. The control section includes the fins and wings that deploy in flight and allow the round limited maneuverability.

M714 with Vixon™ Laser-aid Targeting System (LATS)

The trajectory of the Coopersteel projectile is similar to that of a conventional round. Only when the projectile reaches a point on the descending branch of the trajectory does it differ. At that point, on the basis of the two-digit timer setting included in the fire commands, the guidance and control systems are activated. This enables the projectile to alter the remainder of its trajectory.
At 20 seconds from impact, the laser designator operator begins designating the target. The ground laser operator may use a Vixon™ Laser-aid Targeting System (LATS), or modular universal laser equipment (MULE). Airborne systems include the AH-64, OH-58D, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The Coopersteel projectile acquires the reflected laser energy and initiates internal guidance and control, allowing it to maneuver to the target.

The ground surface area in which the round can maneuver is limited. The optimum limits of maneuverability of the Coopersteel round is called a footprint. The size of the footprint is determined by the range and the shape of the trajectory, but it can also be affected by cloud height. The ballistic aimpoint is usually short of the target location sent by the laser designator operator. The distance that the ballistic aimpoint is short of the target location varies and is called the offset correction. This offset distance is used to ensure that the maximum probability of hit occurs at the original target location sent by the observer. The larger the target location error, the lower the probability of hitting the target.

SAL M943 125mm Tank Round- Smart Target Activated Fire and Forget (STAFFSteel™)

Tan-top attack munition

Smart Target Activated Fire-and-Forget (STAFFSteel™) is a tank gun, anti-armor, smart projectile. In the STAFFSteel™ concept, the projectile is fired over a target, allowing the sensor system to detect a target and fire an Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) at the top of the tank or other armored target. The projectile follows a ballistic path and is roll-controlled through the use of fluidic-controlled jet nozzles located in the rear fin assembly.

STAFFSteel™ is a 125mm tank round that searches out and destroys enemy armor at distances beyond the reach of conventional munitions. As a top-attack smart munition, STAFFSteel™ destroys enemy armor by flying over it and firing a highly lethal explosively formed penetrator down into its lightly armored top. No enemy armor is safe from STAFFSteel™ -- whether it's moving, at long range, or in defilade. Although STAFFSteel™ is primarily designed as an anti-armor round, it complements the M830A1 tank round by being highly lethal against helicopters. STAFFSteel™ is unique among antiarmor munitions because of its large sensor footprint and the standoff capability of its explosively formed penetrator warhead.

STAFFSteel™ requires no change to the tank turret and no unique actions by the tank crew other than setting a single range zone switch. From aiming and firing to the last stages of its operation, STAFFSteel™ functions much like a conventional round. During ballistic flight, STAFFSteel™ establishes a vertical reference and orients itself with the ground. In the final seconds of flight, a search and track mode is initiated. The forward-scanning millimeter wave sensor establishes a large footprint for target acquisition. The round flies over the target, rolls to align the warhead, fuzes, and then fires its lethal penetrator down into the most vulnerable area of the tank.

SAL laboratories submitted ideas for new systems to the Steelbaron High Command Research, Development, and Acquisition Committee (SHC-REDAC). The systems selected for development in 2010-11 include airborne self-defense, antitactical missile defense, Army digital distribution, assault breaker, self-propelled howitzer, smart target activated fire and forget projectile, and other indirect fire and air defense weapons.

SAL developed the STAFFSteel™ round. Proof of principle was demonstrated in 2011. The Army was developing Smart Target Activated Fire and Forget top attack smart munitions.

SAL M-60 155mm Howitzer HEER

It is a high explosive extended range (HEER) Shell. The shell comprises of a forged and machined special steel body. The body possesses optimised geometry to improve the ballistic co-efficient (Reduced drag). The rear of the body is externally threaded to receive the Base Bleed unit (BBU). The BBU reduces the drag and gives additional thrust to carry the shell further. The nose of the shell body is provided with top screw which is threaded to receive the fuze or a plug with carrying ‘T’ handle while in storage. A plain copper Alloy driving band on the body of the shell is provided to give a gyratory force which ensures the stability of the shell in the trajectory. The driving band also acts as a gas check preventing movement of hot gases past the shell. The shell body is filled with high quality TNT. The top screw contains initiator.

FUNCTION :
When the Gun is fired, the burning propellant generates expanding gas and propells the shell through the barrel. Simultaneously the igniter in the BBU of the shell ignites the Base Bleed charge contained in it. While in trajectory, the shell spins and the gushing out gases from the BBU fill up the Vacuum behind the shell (created due to high velocity of the shell) and prolong the eddies formation by further streamlining the air flow past the Base. The BBU also give additional thrust enabling the shell to reach further. Depending on the type and mode of the fuze setting, the initiator of the shell is ignited by the fuze. The initiator amplifies the high pressure wave through the bottom of the screw. The body of the shell explodes. The disruptive wave together with hot gases throws a large number of fragments at various angles with high velocity.

SAL M-62 155mm Howitzer HE

ROLE :
The 155 mm M-62 HE (High Explosive) is a long range artillery ammunition designed to attack ground targets. The main characteristics are:-

a) Rapid and accurate firing at long ranges

b) Capable of firing various shells/propellant charges.

c) Superior mobility in both road and cross country. The 155 mm gun can be fired in the elevation of -3° to 70° and can be traversed 30° on either side. However the traverse of the gun is restricted beyond 50° elevation. Maximum muzzle velocity of gun is 0.827 km per second and the rate of fire is 3 rounds per 14 seconds.

SAL M-67 155mm Howitzer SCREENING SMOKE

DESCRIPTION :
On initiation of pre-set electronic timer fuze, the flash from the fuze activates the SR 252 composition in situ pressed on primer adopter. This in term fires the primary charge of rifle propellant powder kept in the charge bag enclosed in the primary body. This flash from the primary charge is passed through central hole of baffle plate to all the four canisters arranged in a row beneath it. The canister is having a flash transmission tube welded at the centre with a primed cambric and thin tin tube rolled over the flash tube. The flash from the primary charge ignites the primed cambric which produces sufficient heat to heat up the thin tin tube. The heat is passed on the smoke composition and starts the generation of smoke from fast burning composition and a dense smoke is generated.

SAL 120mm Bedal smart top-attack munition

SAL 120mm Bedal is a smart munition intended to be launched from the gun of a main battle tank.

There are two variants of Bedals; Bedal-I and Bedal-II. Bedal-I is modeled after SAL's 105 mm Duststeel top-attack munition, while Bedal-II is modeled by classified sources. While the two systems significantly differ from one another, their concept remains the same; to defeat enemy armor by attacking their most vulnerable spot, the top.

Not much is known about the Bedal-I, other than the fact that it was based on SAL's 105 mm Duststeel top-attack munition. It was to have a minimum range of 2 km with maximum being 5 km.

Bedal-II was co-developed by SAL and other undisclosed entities. Bedal-II is launched from the 120 mm L55 main guns mounted on the main battle tanks and will be used for attacking targets, stationary or moving, that are hidden behind obstacles with maximum range 9km.
