History of Old Tyrannia

"In over 1,000 years of history, no foreign army has ever reached the gates of Nova Latium City, let alone taken it."
- Jacopo Morosini,
"Old Tyrannia: A Venetian's Guide To The Mother Country"

The history of Old Tyrannia, at least under its current name, is relatively short; despite its name, Old Tyrannia has not existed very long. However, the history of the region known as Tyrannia is far longer; going back almost three thousand years. The first settlers in Tyrannia settled around 2000 BC. They arrived in what is now known as New Imperial Tyrannia, and were thus likely of North American descent. The settlers were primitive tribespeople who lived in peace in the lush forests of New Imperial Tyrannia for hundreds of years. But around 1000 BC, some of them moved out into the more open spaces of what is now Old Tyrannia. Life here was more challenging; huge saurian predators such as Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus were the biggest threat; but smaller predators like lions and dromeosaurs were also a danger. They were forced to adapt to a more fiercesome world. The nomadic peoples eventually discovered agriculture, settling down and building walled cities and farms. Around 500 BC, over a hundred of these settlements existed. Tyrannian tribal chiefs, called yers, were elected by the small farming communities they governed, and some were able to extend their power over several such communities and form small kingdoms. The rulers of these small states were accorded the superior title of yerzhug. The religion of these peoples- a form of which is still practiced by the tribes living in New Imperial Tyrannia's jungles- focused around a benevolent sky goddess, identified with Juno and Nix by later Tyranno-Roman pagans, various nature spirits and a separate class of deity that presided over human activities and concepts like justice or love. The influence of this faith can still be seen in modern Tyrannian paganism.

In about 110 BC Roman settlers colonised the east coast of Tyrannia. They settled peacefully, oblivious to the prescence of the inlanders. It was only some time after arriving that the colonists encountered the natives. The tribal leaders' title was translated by the Romans as tyrannus, 'tyrant', then a simple title for an absolute, non-hereditary ruler and not yet having aquired its negative connotations. From this word came the name, 'Tyrannia'. In 62 BC, Gaius Julius Caeser led a campaign to annex the whole of Tyrannia. He succesfully conquered the people of Old Tyrannia and named the region of Nova Latium which the capital is situated in and was later named after, but was forced to return to Europe before his forces could move west into the Western region later known as New Imperial Tyrannia (which was always isolated from the East by the Cocoa Desert). Old Tyrannia was named Provinca Tyrannia. Tyrannia was ruled as an imperial province, under direct authority of the Roman Emperor (rather than the Senate), represented by the legatus Augusti pro praetore, or governor. Diocletian's reforms saw Tyrannia become the Diocese of Tyrannia, under the Praetorian Prefecture of Gaul. In the later Roman period, it was reclassified as a separate prefecture, under its own praetorian prefect. In this period it was subdivided into several dioceses, which in turn were divided into smaller provinces.

Tyrannia escaped barbarian invasion during the break-up of the Western Roman Empire, and received an influx of refugees from the unstable mainland. Increasingly independant of the collapsing mainland, the governors (by now hereditary) of the province abandoned the title of "prefect" and adopted the title of prorex, or "viceroy", which allowed them the same degree of power in Tyrannia as the Emperor himself wielded in Europe (or theoretically held). Tyrannia remained under Roman rule until 500 AD (according to traditional accounts), when, following the fall of the Empire in Europe, Governor Regallius Maximus declared Tyrannia to be an independant state and assumed all imperial titles; it became what was later known as the Imperial State of Tyrannia, with Regallius as the Emperor Gaius Regallius Maximus I. Tyrannia had remained loyal to Rome right up until news of the last Roman Emperor's death in 476 AD reached the provinicial and later Imperial capital of Nova Latium City. Regarding itself as the last bastion of Roman civilization in the West and therefore the succesor to the Western Roman Empire, the new state sent a message to the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Emperor requesting recognition while hailing the ruler of Constantinople as augustus, or "senior emperor". Needless to say, the Empire rejected outright the establishment of the so-called "Holy Roman Empire" in Europe, seeing it as an upstart and continuing to see itself as the succesor to Rome.

Archaeological vidence shows that by 800 AD Tyrannians had reached North America and indeed probably knew the American coastline better than they did the unexplored interior of their own homeland, with one Tyrannian Emperor, Spurius Regallius Maximus II Obciduanus, having reportedly founded the Tyrannian colony of Obciduana there in 826. Obciduana was previously thought to have been the New Imperial Tyrannian island of Orca off the southern coast, but new evidence shows it may in fact have been somewhere in North America. Obciduanus' honorific agnomen was awarded for his great victory against the 'Obciduan tyrants (chiefs)' in 829, suggesting that Tyrannia may have fought a series of wars against the native Americans at this time. It is recorded that famine and attacks by the 'Obciduan savages' forced the Tyrannians to abandon their colony by about 878, and more precise records of its location were largely lost in a series of fires between 900 AD and 1000 AD, so Tyrannian knowledge of North America was lost; indeed, in the 12th century AD famous Tyrannian writer Blaesus wrote, "if the land of Obciduana truly existed, the most likely location would be the land of Viridia Major (Greenland) in the North... The existence of a fabled land in the far West seems nonsense, and the Obciduan [people] may have been Norsemen as it is well documented that the Scandinavians had already colonized that island by the time Obcidua was colonized."

Over the course of the first millenium, the centralized, provincial system of government was undermined by weak Emperors and infighting. Subsequently, the governors of the provinces became hereditary, and began to resemble the nobility of continental Europe; Tyrannia was slipping into feudalism. This transition was completed when, in 870, the reigning Emperor reorganized the Tyrannian state along the lines of the European feudal system, in attempt to restore order and strengthen the central authority of the Imperial Court. Around this time, the basic hierarchy of the Tyrannian nobility- princeps nobilis (prince), dux (duke), comes (count), vicecomes (viscount), baro (baron)- was established; later additions such as Archidux (archduke), magnus dux (grand duke) and marchis (marquess) occured from the 16th century onwards, mainly under the Romula dynasty. As was the case in Rome, the Tyrannian Emperor possessed several offices that collectively granted him imperial power; caesar, augustus, rex tyranniae, pontifex maximus, princeps civitatem and imperator maximus were among these. "Imperator" became the standard title of the Tyrannian Emperor only under the House Romula, when it was decided that a single overarching title was needed.

In the aftermath of these reforms and the consolidation of Imperial power, Tyrannia entered a period of rapid expansion that lasted until 1000 AD, and became the Tyrannian Empire. This lasted for many years, and by the year 1500 was the world's foremost superpower. At this time (around 1502), the last Emperor of the Regallia dynasty, Emperor Gaius Regallius Maximus Constantinos II, usually referred to as Constantine II of Tyrannia for simplicity's sake, broke with tradition by marrying a wife of Germanic descent, Empress Matilda of Tyrannia. When he died in 1526, his son, also Gaius Regallius Maximus Constantinos, was denied the throne by the then Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Imperiosus VI, who instead gave it to the then Archduke of Hiera, Marcus Romulus Lanatus, who became Marcus Romulus I. This triggered a civil war that lasted twelve years between the Romulanists and the Regallianists, and ended in victory for the Romulus dynasty; Matilda, Empress of Tyrannia, was executed on the 18th February, 1539, and Constantinos followed her on the 5th March.

Though it arguably dominated the medieval world of the North Atlantic despite its policy of non-interference in European affairs, the Tyrannian Empire declined in importance from c.1550 onwards; nonetheless, it was among the largest empires in the known world until colonial expansion by Europe beginning in 1521 left it dead in its tracks (along with other ancient powers such as China and the Ottoman Empire, both of which enjoyed good relations with the Empire), as the European powers carved out great overseas territories while Tyrannia became increasingly isolationist and stagnant. By this point, it had grown to cover the entire Tyrannian continent and annexed New Imperial Tyrannia, called in Tyrannic Latin Imperium Tyranniae Novae. Joining the colonial game late, the Empire did make some territorial gains in Pacific; these colonies were united to form the Tyrannian Pacific Territory in 1706. But in general Tyrannian power continued to decline. Around 1806, the Imperial throne was passed to the Lepidean branch of the House Romula when the last Lanatean monarch, Empress Vibia II, the 'Stuttering Empress', died without an heir. She was replaced by Emperor Alexius Romulus Lepidus II, her cousin.

In 1890 AD, New Imperial Tyrannia rebelled against the Empire, splitting Tyrannia literally in two; this triggered the fall of the Old Empire, as many Tyrannian provinces broke off from the Empire, which officially renamed itself the Empire of Old Tyrannia to distinguish itself from the Armed Republic of New Imperial Tyrannia; ironically the Empire remained the more liberal of the two Tyrannian states. The island of Tyrannia was divided. The Armed Republic was governed by the Western Liberation Front as a single-party dictatorship, and was initially a very socialist regime, launching a 'cultural revolution' to eliminate Imperial culture from NIT and nationalizing major industries. In 1912, President Autronius Cethegus dissolved the WLF and proclaimed himself Dictator perpetuo, Dictator in Perpetuity, of the Armed Republic, thus reforming it from a single-party dictatorship to a fully autocratic state. Like Old Tyrannia, New Imperial Tyrannia slowly evolved into a Fascist state following the First World War.

Fascism emerged in Old Tyrannia during the 1920s-1940s, when it was sympathetic towards Italy and Germany during WW2. It never became directly involved. When the horror of the Holocaust became known, Nazism was outlawed in the Empire, after an energetic campaign by ethnic minorities and the more conservative and moralistic upper and middle classes. Many Nazis fled to the Empire to escape punishment in Europe, only to be burned at the stake. It should be noted that Tyrannia's leaders were perhaps more influenced by their belief that Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party were largely responsible for the collapse of Fascism in much of Europe than by any moral objections to the Holocaust, although they were undeniably shaken by it. The second Dictator of New Imperial Tyrannia, Sulpicius Lentulus, had no such qualms and openly mourned the collapse of the Nazi regime. He also won the enduring hatred of the Tyrannian Emperor for his eager support of the Republican Fascist Party in Italy when King Victor Emmanuel III removed Mussolini from power in 1943, while the Empire condemned the so-called Salò Republic and insisted that the King was perfectly justified in exercising his authority over the Fascist Party.

In 1955, the Cocoa Desert War was fought between the Imperial forces of Emperor Gaius Romulus III and Lentulus' son and succesor, Lucius Sulpicius Lentulus when the Armed Republic attempted to assert its claim to a disputed region along the Imperial-Armed Republic border. The Empire was victorious in the war, pushing back the republicans and forcing the Dictator to surrender the disputed territories. In 1982 Crown Prince Gaius Romulus Lepidus, then Archduke of Nova Latium, came to the throne as Gaius Romulus IV after the death of his father, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Gaius Romulus III. His Majesty is the 104th ruler of Old Tyrannia. The Emperor celebrated his Silver Jubilee in 2007. He remains in good health and is popular with his people, consistently receiving approval rates of between 80% and 98%. Despite this the Emperor's reign has seen the rise of the first real republican movement, made up largely of young people influenced by Western media and ideals such as democracy, liberty and equality. The Emperor has been much more lenient than his predeccesors towards such movements, and both the Republican Party and Communist Party are legal in Old Tyrannia. The Emperor appears confident that such parties will never gain majority support.

In early 2009, New Imperial Tyrannia once again became part of Old Tyrannia after economic failure, brought on largely by Decimus Coelius Calidus, the fifth Dictator's rash and ill-conceived warmongering against Leftist foes such as Seculartopia and Sebastianalandia, forced the Dictator to seek the Emperor's aid. It was the Emperor's price for such aid that the New Tyrannian monarchy was restored and New Imperial Tyrannia was re-assimilated into the Tyrannian Empire. Spurred on by the resulting economic boom as Tyrannian companies invested in New Imperial Tyrannia's untapped resources, the Empire subsequently entered a new expansionist stage. It has been involved in several wars recently as part of its strategy to reclaim its status as a world power, the most notable of which were the Serpent War (fought between the Cobra Alliance and a loose coalition of other powers, ended in peace treaty), the Venezuean War (lost to the Communist state of Martilia, a loss usually blamed on the Empire's Imerian 'allies') and the Plains Nation War (stalemate following the intervention of Rithian. The Empire rather melodramatically considers the international community's opposition to Tyrannian peacekeeping efforts during this war to be the greatest betrayl in Tyrannian history).

Government & Politics

"The Tyrannian Empire is ruled by an Emperor. Regardless of the dominant ideology, this has never changed and likely never will."
- Jacopo Morosini,
"Old Tyrannia: A Venetian's Guide To The Mother Country"

The Grand Fascist Empire of Old Tyrannia is officially an Executive Constitutional Monarchy and a Multiparty Parliamentary Democracy. However, in reality the Imperial Parliment has little power, with the de facto leader being Emperor Gaius Romulus IV. The Imperial Parliament was formed in 1859 and was based on the Westminster system. The upper house was originally composed entirely of hereditary nobles, and known in Tyrannia as the Concilium Nobilis. The lower house was elected and known as the Concilium Plebis. The 1896 Meritocracy Act, however, drastically decreased the size of the Imperial nobility and also introduced to convention of having two thirds of the upper house being appointed by the Emperor, with only a third remaining hereditary. This greatly increased the power of the Emperor. All legislature must be approved by the upper house before being passed to the Emperor. In English, the upper house (which retains the name Concilium Nobilis) is usually translated as the "House of Nobles," with the lower house being translated variously as "House of Commons," "House of Plebeians" and "House of Represenatives". The Government's preferred translation is the latter.

The Emperor of Old Tyrannia is formally styled in English as "His Imperial Majesty [X], in Christ the God faithful Emperor and Autocrat of Old Tyrannia and its assorted dominions and territories." The Emperor also holds additional titles such as "King of Northern Venezue" and "Duke of Tyrannic Venezia" as well as any titles he has acquired from other rulers or given himself. In Latin, the Emperor is styled "Imperator Caesar [X] Augustus" and Imperator is the formal title of the Tyrannian Emperor in Latin. "Imperator" was originally an honorary title belonging to the Commander-in-Chief of the Tyrannian Army. In Ancient Rome, it was one of the titles held by the Emperor and was originally a title granted to a military commander after a great victory. It was the source of the word "Emperor" and later was used as a translation of that title into Latin. The Tyrannians never used it as such, and had no one title equivalent to "Emperor," like the Romans, until Emperor Marcus Romulus I standardized the title of the Emperor and established "Imperator" as the principal Imperial title, with "Caesar" and "Augustus," another Roman honorific meaning "Venerable" or "Majestic," as additional titles. "Augustus" can be considered equivalent to "His Majesty" in English as far as Tyrannian Imperial titles are concerned. The "in Christ the God faithful" part of the Emperor's title was adopted from the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire after the Tyrannian Emperors proclaimed themselves the Byzantine Emperor's rightful succesors in the 15th century.

The Head of Government is the Prime Minister, Caput imperii or literally "Head of the Empire" in Latin, who is the leader of the party with a majority of seats in the House of Represenatives and is responsible for appointing the Cabinet or Council of Ministers (Concilium ministrorum). The current Prime Minister is Vitaeus Veturius Cicurinus Asinianus, leader of the Imperial Fascist Party which supports a pro-monarchy and non-racist version of Fascism. The leader of the opposition at present, Gaius Vitellius Longus, heads the Democratic Party, which aims to decrease the power of the Emperor and, like the more extremist Republican Party, has roots in the old Democratic Republican Party. They have had little success due to the power of veto given to the Emperor by the Imperial Constitution. In the past their primary rival was the Monarchist Party, which had ruled for over 100 years before its defeat in the 2009 elections, after which they disintegrated into various smaller parties. A further major change in Tyrannian party politics came about after the February 2012 elections, after which no one party acquired a majority vote. As a result the parties organized themselves into three electoral coalitions- the National-Democratic Bloc, the Fascist-Monarchist Bloc and the Social-Liberal Bloc. Tyrannia's recognised political parties are listed below, according to the bloc to which they belong:

The Empire is officially a Fascist state, though the 1896 Meritocracy Act, which is still technically valid having never been withdrawn, proclaims the Empire to be a 'Meritocratic Imperial Monarchy' despite this being an oxymoron. Fascism gained a foothold in the 1900s, due to the then-Emperor's fear of Communist expansion, following the execution of his fellow Monarch in Russia. At the core of the Tyrannian political system is the outdated concept of honour, that evolved from medieval chivalry in the 19th century as a visible distinguishment between the Empire and the 'barbarian' world. It has since become the ends as well as the means and honour is the main drive of the 21st century Tyrannian Empire. Honour frequently overrides realpolitik and ideological belief in the Empire's foreign affairs.

Tyrannian colonies are ruled by a governor or propraetor. Since the beginning of the 20th century, most of the Empire's colonies have began to push for greater and greater independance; this has lead to the adoption of the British system of dominions, or self-governing states. The title of prorex (governor-general or viceroy in English) is granted to the appointed governor of these states, which also possess their own Tyrannian Orthodox bishop and elected parliament, and even an elected caput dominionii ("Head of the Domion"/Prime Minister) in some cases. Over half of the Tyrannian Empire are now dominions. In special cases, a governor militant or legatus propraetor is appointed; this is generally in newly acquired, rebellious or highly militarized colonies, such as Tyrannic Zuye and Orca Island. Another special case is Venezia, where the Emperor's official title is Dux venetii or Duke of Venice, and so the governor is styled produx. The King of Imeriata is also regarded as holding the Imperial title of prorex- as well as dux- in his role as Duke of Northern Venezue. Old Tyrannia itself is subdivided into a number of "home provinces" administered by a proconsul, a system established during the reforms of the Imperial government in the 19th century. Local government beneath the proconsular level differs across Tyrannia.

The Committee of Public Security and Harmony (Commissionibus Securitas et Concordia Publica, CSCP) is the Empire's secret police and internal counter-intelligence agency (foreign intelligence is dealt with by the Strategic Information Committee (Commissionibus Opportuna Notitia, CON)). Whereas the CON reports to the Minister of Defence, the CSCP reports to the Secretary of Public Security and Harmony, who in turn reports to the Prime Minister and Emperor. The activities of the CSCP include gathering intelligence about potential threats to the State, quietly eliminating such threats and protecting the Empire against foreign spies and infiltrators. The Imperial Romulan Order (Ordo Romulanus Imperialis, ORI) is a third intelligence agency that is answerable only to the Emperor himself and concerns itself primarily with monitoring the CSCP and the Imperial Government. It is responsible for ensuring the loyalty of the Government, including the Council of Ministers and Imperial Parliament, to the Emperor. It is thus a top secret organization and its members are known only to each other and several important members of the Imperial family.

Geography

"Even the Empire's armies do not present as great a challenge to invaders as nature's own defences."
- Rubellius Cincinnatus
, "History of the Norse in Tyrannia"

The Grand Fascist Empire of Old Tyrannia proper rules over half of the island of Tyrannia, which lies in the North Atlantic ocean, near Western Europe. The great Cocoa Desert dominates the middle ground of the Empire, seperating New Imperial Tyrannia, a dominion of the Empire, from Old Tyrannia. The Cocoa Desert is known in the Empire as the Desertus Frons, 'Brown Desert,' after the curious chocolate colour of its sand (also the source of its English name). Old Tyrannia's northern coastline is dominated by the Tyrannian Mountains, the tallest of which is Mt. Jupiter, the source of the River Vitae that runs south-east into the South Atlantic. Mt. Jupiter is a twin-peaked mountain with two peaks known as Jupiter Minor and Jupiter Major. Jupiter Major, the taller of the two peaks stands at 8,256m, making it the 6th highest mountain in the known world.

The Empire's climate is much warmer than its northern location would suggest, mainly due to the warm, wet weather brought from the south by the Gulf Stream. The northern and western regions of the Empire tend to be much cooler. Few countries on Earth can boast as wide a range of habitats as Old Tyrannia. The Empire itself is primarily dominated by dense forest, ranging from the coniferous forests of the Tyrannian Mountains to the tropical rainforests of the southern coast; here lives a huge range of wildlife, but the forests are dominated by the family Dinsauria, which are extinct in most of the world. The species Titanosaurus tyranicus is the largest animal in the Empire, and Spinosaurus occasus, an endangered theropod found predominantly on the lower course of the River Vitae, is the largest carnivore reaching lengths of about 15m.

In between these great forests lie the great flood plains of the Empire's major rivers; this is where the majority of the nation's cities are located, including Nova Latium City, the Empire's capital. The plains are very fertile, and produce most of the nation's food. Tyrannia's forests have largely escaped the deforestation in the rest of the developed world, due to both their size and the fact that by the time of the Empire's population boom in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, most of the Empire's food was grown in Tyrannia's overseas territories, meaning less land was needed for farming within Old Tyrannia itself. At any rate, the soil of the forests are generally unsuitable for farming. Sadly Tyrannia's own stunning natural environment has been preserved at the cost of the environments of many of its colonies and conquered nations.

The Empire also controls a number of overseas territories, some newly acquired in Tyrannia's most recent period of expansion, others left over from the time of the great Tyrannian Empire that collapsed in the 19th century. They are:

  • The Tyrannian Pacific Territory
    A collection of small pacific islands colonized by Tyrannia during the 17th and 18th centuries. Mostly inhabited by people of Tyrannian descent and reliant on tourism. No significant independance movement. Administered by the Tyrannian Pacific Monarchist Movement, formerly a colonial branch of the main Tyrannian Monarchist Party.
  • The Dominion of Phunkphresh
    Acquired by Tyrannia after aiding the former owners in a civil war against Communists, the cold, sparsely populated Dominion of Phunkphresh is valued for its rich resources. The local inhabitants are fiercely self-reliant but have no real qualms with the Empire. Administered by the colonial branch of the National Conservatives.
  • The Dominion of New Peace for Men
    Formerly part of the bizzare pacific nation of Peace for Men, New Peace for Men is still largely a nuclear wasteland. The people worship an odd local religion called Chaos, the local wildlife were apparently already bizzare and horrific mutations even before the nuclear war and local customs are often disturbing, but the locals are generally grateful to Tyrannia for rebuilding their nation after the war. Administered by the New Peace for Men National Reconstruction Party.
  • The Dominion of New Imperial Tyrannia
    Ruled as a brutal dictatorship by its Governor-General and former Dictator, New Imperial Tyrannia shares with its colonial suzerain the island of Tyrannia. Large, poor and oppressive, it is impossible to find out what the people think of their Governor or Emperor as most are too afraid to open their mouths. Occasionally something of a diplomatic embarrasment to the rest of the Empire. Single-party state governed by the Governor-General's Empire Loyalist Party.
  • The Dominion of Tyrannic Venezia
    Wealthy, industralized dominion centred around the historic city of Venice, this territory is thriving, developed and modern. The Venetians enjoy their greater autonomy under the Empire and show no interest in becoming part of Italy again. Also highly populated with refugees from Tyrannic Venezue, who tend to be fanatically anti-communist and very pro-Tyrannian. No threat of rebellion here. Governed by the Veneto State party.
  • The Dominion of Tyrannic East Asia
    A wealthy but troublesome dominion, the people of Tyrannic East Asia are mostly loyal but there are sufficient numbers of separatists to cause trouble for the pro-Tyrannian establishment. Administered by the Legalist Party of Tyrannic East Asia, which is affiliated with the Fascist-Monarchist Bloc. The main separatist party is the National Liberation Party.
  • The Colony of Orca Island
    The home of the Empire's largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, this highly militarized island community is closely linked to the Imperial Navy and Army.
  • The Colony of Tyrannic Zuye
    This small African colony is the most rebellious of the Empire's lands, but the United Zuye Resistance Front (UZRF) have had little success in resisting Tyrannian rule. Formerly part of the Kingdom of Zuye, the rest of which is controlled by the Marian Empire.
  • The Colony of Tyrannic New Judea
    A safe haven established by the Empire for Jewish refugees after the Second World War, mainly Jews who had been involved in the Italian Fascist movement or otherwise had Fascist links. Really intended as a Fascist alternative to the democratic State of Israel, it is governed by the Jewish Fascist organization Brit HaBirionim.
  • The Grand Duchy of Northern Venezue
    Administered by the Imerian Absolute Royal Federation, with which the Tyrannian Empire shares its sovereignity, Northern Venezue has little love for its King, Gaius Romulus IV. Their Grand Duke and Governor, the King of Imeriata, is far more popular.

Most of the Empire's colonies have become semi-independant over time, as can be seen by the alteration of their prefix from 'Colony' to the self-governing 'Dominion'. Tyrannian dominions have their own local governments while colonies are directly administered by Tyrannia through their governors.

The Empire is also in personal union with the Kingdom of Southwestern Kinitaria. Initially being separated from Kinitaria proper after an invasion and occupation, Southwestern Kinitaria became a democracy following the end of the war and passed through the hands of several colonial masters before New Azura decided to sell its territory in order to generate money for the financially struggling government, after which Empress Numeria Romula Flavia purchased it on behalf of the Imperial Family. Since the Empress purchased the colony as a private acquisition, and not on behalf of the Tyrannian government, Southwestern Kinitaria did not become a colony of the Empire but instead entered into personal union, with Emperor Gaius Romulus IV acquiring the title "King of Southwestern Kinitaria" quite independantly of his role as Emperor of Tyrannia. The Imperial Family has chosen not to interfere in the politics of the colony and thus it has remained under a democratic parliamentary system ever since, albeit with a new King and the introduction of a strong Tyrannian cultural influence as its monarch sponsors the construction of many Tyrannian Orthodox churches, Tyrannian-style buildings and centres of Tyrannian culture.

Foreign Relations & Military

"The Empire has always seen its rivals as barbarians... Some barbarians, however, are better liked than others."
- John Harrisons
, "Tyrannocentrism and Europe"

The Empire of Old Tyrannia maintains a large military (though not excessively so for its size), and currently 68,181,500 personnel serve. Compulsory military service means the nation constantly has a vast reserve of troops; in wartime, conscription can boost the military's numbers to almost 215,310,000 troops; the military is among the strongest in the region. In addition, the Empire's colonial possessions are guarded by a total of 120,000,000 colonial militia. Officially, the Tyrannian army is referred to as the Imperial Legions (LEGIONES IMPERIALIS), the navy as the Imperial Navy (CLASSIS IMPERIALIS) and the airforce as the 'Legion of the Air' (LEGIO CAELI). The Imperial Legions make use of much of the latest technology; it currently has 1,500,000 Panther II tanks, 1,100,600 Challenger II tanks and 1,000,500 Exterminator tanks in service. It also has access to 1,550,000 Puma and 1,200,000 FV432 armoured personnel carriers.

The Imperial Legions' principal artillery piece is the AS-90, a 155mm self-propelled gun. Other artillery used by the Tyrannian Empire includes the M6-640 mortar and the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System. The main anti-aircraft gun used by the Empire is the Imperial Type 44 Anti-Aircraft Cannon, which is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. Its main armament consists of two 35 mm autocannon, mounted on a Panther II tank chassis. Each Imperial Legionary is issued a Browning L9A1 pistol, a dagger and a traditional Tyrannian sword or gladius for self defence. Other infantry weapons used by the Empire include the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank weapon, the L7 General-Purpose Machine Gun, the 7.62mm L96 sniper rifle and the L85A2 standard issue rifle. Imperial soldiers are noted for insisting on wearing their traditional black armour in any and all combat situations, from the desert to the rainforest. The Empire generally insists that the black uniforms strike fear into the enemy, although it has been suggested by the Empire's critics that this is merely an example of the Empire putting its pride and obsession with honour and romanticism above pragmatism. Tyrannian soldiers wear the Mark 4 titanium galea or helmet, which resembles the iconic German Stalhelm in appearance, not least because it was based on the Stalhelm which were provided to the Tyrannian Empire by Nazi Germany in the 1940s.

In addition to the Imperial Legions, the Empire has a very large and well equipped airforce;
  • 185 F-22 Raptors
  • 210 Eurofighter Typhoons
  • 400 F-16 Fighting Falcons
  • 116 SR-72 stealth planes
  • 62 Airbus A330 MRTTs
  • 75 LEMV Hybrid Airships
  • 210 Orcapolis Sea King helicopters

and a large navy. Tyrannian Imperial warships use the prefix 'HIMS' for 'His Imperial Majesty's Ship'. Occasionally the prefix HTyMS for 'His Tyrannic Majesty's Ship' is used by foreign media when other ships from nations using the HIMS prefix are deployed. Classes of ship used by the Imperial Navy include:
  • Gaius Romulus IV-class aircraft carrier
    New generation supercarriers that are capable of carrying up to 40 F-16 Fighting Falcons but with an average compliment of 30, the Gaius Romulus IV-class is the backbone of the Imperial Navy. Currently the Empire operates twenty-six. Based on the British Queen Elizabeth-class.
  • Regallius-class helicopter carrier
    An older ship modeled on the British HMS Ocean, with fifteen in service. Smaller but just as effective as the Gaius Romulus IV-class ship, carrying up to eighteen helicopters. These are primarily deployed by the Mediterranean fleet.
  • Type 45 Destroyer
    Large, modern destroyer and the workhorse of the Imperial fleet, the Type 45 was built primarily for anti-aircraft roles and has a sophisticated radar system integrated with an advanced anti-air system. Thirty-eight are currently in service; the Empire plans to have five more constructed by 2014.
  • Type 26 Frigate
    The Type 26 Frigate was introduced in 2009 to replace the outdated Type 22 frigate. Fourty-one currently function, with four more planned for December 2013.
  • Spinosaurus-class troop carrier
    Among the largest ships ever built by the Imperial Navy, the Spinosaurus-class is a 360m long purpose-built troop carrier capable of carrying 5,000 passengers, half an Imperial Legion. Thirty-three are in service.
  • Imperial Amphibious Landing Craft
    Designed to carry up to 500 troops, this unarmed air-cushioned landing craft is one of the most numerous classes in the Imperial Navy, with fourty-five in service. It takes twenty to carry a full legion of Imperial soldiers. The design was modelled on the Soviet Zubr-class.
  • Legion-class nuclear submarine
    Modeled on the British Vanguard-class, the Tyrannian Legion-class submarine is the Empire's primary ballistic missile submarine. Each carries 16 × ballistic missile tubes and 4 × 21 in (533 mm) torpedo tubes. The Legion-class is the backbone of the Empire's nuclear deterrent. Twenty-five function at present.
  • Hippocampus-class nuclear submarine
    The Empire's main hunter-killer submarine is the Hippocampus-class. Its principle armament is 6 x 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes and it carries a crew of 98, with a capacity for 109. The Empre currently operates thirty, with five more being built for August 2013.
  • Imperial Floating Fortress
    The ultimate in naval warfare, the Tyrannian Imperial Floating Fortress is equipped with x8 4.5 inch Mk 8 Mod. 1 guns and up to 34 general purpose machine guns, and is capable of carrying up to 50,000 troops (five entire legions) and 6 frigates or 4 Type 45 destroyers. This portable naval base also carries a compliment of six helicopters and eight F-16s. Six function at present.

The Imperial Navy is divided into three fleets and four strike forces, the North Atlantic Fleet, the Mediterranean Fleet and the Pacific Fleet, as well as Strike Force Alpha, Strike Force Beta, Strike Force Gamma and Strike Force Delta. The Empire also maintains two reserve fleets.

Image
HIMS Augustus, Legion-class submarine of Strike Force Alpha.

The Imperial Army is divided into legions of about 10,000 troops. It includes cavalry, though these are more symbolic than anything else and are only deployed as specialist troops on unusual occasions. A Tyrannian legion consists of about ten cohorts and is subdivided into centuries; each legion is commanded by a legatus, who is appointed by the Emperor.

Ranks of the Tyrannian Imperial Military

Army
Imperator (Commander-in-Chief) --> Legatus (Commander of a Legion) --> Tribune --> Centurion (Commander of a Century) --> Principal (Cavalry or Tank Commander) --> Salarius --> Duplicarius (Senior Non-Commissioned Officer) --> Sesquiplicarius (Junior NCO) --> Immunis (Specialist, i.e. Heavy Weapons squad, Engineers, Medics) --> Discens (Miles training for a specialist role) --> Miles (Private) --> Tiro (Recruit)

Navy
Praefectus Classis (Admiral of the Fleet) --> Praefectus Superior (Admiral) --> Praefectus Secundus (Vice/Rear Admiral) --> Navarch (Commodore) --> Trierarch --> (Captain) --> Centuriae Classiarus (Naval centurion/commander) --> Lieutenant Superior (Lieutenant-commander) --> Lieutenant --> Sub-Lieutenant --> Miles Classiarus (Rating) --> Tiro Classiarus (Naval recruit)

Diplomacy
Despte all this military strength, the Empire is also known for its loyalty to its allies and frequently co-operates with other nations in defence arrangements, as well as imperialistic campaigns and interventions. It is a member of several military alliances and international organizations, as you can see below;
  • La Falange di Fascisti (of which it is the founding nation and leader)
  • The Anti-Communism Alliance (of which it is a co-founder)
  • The Imperial Fascist Alliance
These multilateral military alliances are complimented by a number of bilateral alliances and agreements with other states, a prominent example being the recently signed military pact signed with the Fascist Empire of Aquitayne. Notably, the Empire considers the Imperial Freikorps of Greater Tezdrian, the United Republics of Tehraan, the Fascist Federation of the Grand World Order and the Republic of Natvia to be valued allies, although this is not a comprehensive list.

However, it also has enemies; the Empire has particularly poor relations with the Coalition of Rithian, that climaxed with Rithic threats of genocide against the Empire and the destruction of several Tyrannian cities. It has been involved in various disputes with the Federation of Brewdomia, of which it was briefly a protectorate as a result of the betrayl of the Empire by New Azura in the political chaos following the Serpent War, although this affair has now largely been forgotten. The Empire has embassies in several nations but does not have its own embassy program. The Empire also maintains a positive relationship with Grittonia, out of pity for that nation's weakness and stupidity, and even agreed to mention them in its factbook, despite the fact that it is the most insignificant nation on Earth. The Empire was originally a member and later a major opponent of the now-defunct Northern Eagle Military Alliance. It is a trading power, and notable trading partners include the Peaceful People's Jamahiriya of South Asia Minor.

Recently, the Grand Duchy of Hardenburgh has been the primary opponent to Tyrannian machinations. Though the two nations had come into contact before, the beginning of their relationship is generally seen as the brief attempt by a Tyrannian dominion to break off from the Empire. Hardenburgh offered it's support to the rebellious dominion, leading to a declaration of war by the Empire. A ceasefire has never been signed, although as of yet, neither nation has confronted the other directly. The closest they came to doing so was the Rodarionian attack on Cryrannus, which resulted in a declaration of war against Rodarion by the Empire due to the use of nuclear warheads. Despite the deaths of millions of Cryrannians, Hardenburgh chose to back Rodarion.

However, more recently the Tyranno-Rodarion War, also known as Operation Devil's Snare and the Tyrannian Invasion of Rodarion, has led to the collapse of the Democratic Nationalist Federation and the rise of the new Rodarion theocratic government. Among the first acts of this government was the treaty between Rodarion and the Empire, which has ceded the newly formed State of Cryrannus to the Empire. Cryrannus is now undergoing a referenda on its government style, overseen by a Tyrannian-backed provisional government. Tyranno-Rodarion relations have now improved, but Hardenburgh is regarded as the Empire's primary rival; recently, though, the relationship has become more friendly and respectful as opposed to the open and aggressive adversarial relations of recent years. As a result the Empire's propaganda has shifted to villifying the more immediately threatening Stoklomolvi Liaoist Federation, which seems to have replaced Hardenburgh as Tyrannia's main rival- at least in the eyes of the Imperial Government.

The Empire does not do 'realpolitik'. Some opponents of the regime have also pointed out that the Empire does not do 'sane politik'.

Flora and Fauna

"Nothing is more indicative of Tyrannia's national character than its national animal."
- Jacopo Morosini
, "Old Tyrannia: A Venetian's Guide To The Mother Country"

As previously mentioned, the most prolific group of animals in Old Tyrannia are dinosaurs, which are extinct elsewhere in the world.The top predator in Old Tyrannia is Tyrannosaurus rex, dubbed Tyrannosaurus augustus by some scientists as it is not technically the same species as the famous North American predator but a later branch of the genus. Its primary prey consists of hadrosaurs, of which there is a stunning variety. It is an ambush predator that occasionally hunts in groups, but the younger individuals are faster and more lightly built, and are more likely to run down their prey. It can grow to a maximum length of 13m. Females are larger than males. The only carnivore in Old Tyrannia that is larger than Tyrannosaurus is Spinosaurus occasus, which is only found on the lower course of the River Vitae and is a specialised fish hunter. An endangered species, it is protected by law, but such laws have been implemented only recently, in contrast to Tyrannosaurus which, as the emblem of the Empire, has been protected for centuries; as such, Spinosaurus is an endangered species due to hunting, habitat loss and water pollution.

Image
Fully grown male S. occasus, 23 years and 14m.

The largest animal in Old Tyrannia and the last surviving member of the sauropod lineage anywhere on Earth is Titanosaurus tyranicus, which frequently reaches lengths of 30m or more. T. rex is its only natural predator, though humans and S. occasus both prey upon younger specimens and the old and weak. It is only found in the more remote regions of Old Tyrannia. Ankylosaurs are another common herbivorous species in Tyrannia. Several large predators besides S. occasus and T. rex exist. These are Baryonyx tyranicus, Carcharodontosaurus occidentalis and Carnotaurus minores. The first is a 9m spinosaurid and predominantly a fish eater found along the River Vitae; the last two are large predators growing to about 10m and 6m respectively, both much smaller than their Cretaceous ancestors. C. occidentalis inhabits the east coast where Tyrannosaurus is rarer and presents less significant competition. C. minores is found in New Imperial Tyrannia, east of the Cocoa Desert, where it is the top predator for much of its range, except where it intercepts that of Tyrannosaurus.

Smaller predators are just as ferocious. Deinonychus fronsicus, the Western Deinonychus, and Deinonychus sylvanius, the Eastern or Forest Deinonychus, both grow to 3m in length. The smaller Velociraptor tyranicus found predominantly in the Cocoa Desert and lowland forests of New Imperial Tyrannia (of which it was the national animal) is also a ferocious predator that has been observed to hunt in packs. These are more crudely organized than wolf or hyena packs but are still deadly to anything that might be so unfortunate as to become their prey. In the Vitae Valley and along the East Coast, the tamer but still dangerous Velociraptor domesticus is found. Troodon vulgaris are Tyrannia's answer to foxes, close cousins to Deinonychus and Velociraptor but less voracious hunters. They can be found scavenging alongside stray cats and dogs (both European immigrants) on the streets of most Tyrannian cities. By contrast, the much larger T. giganticus found in the cold northern regions where they are the top predator are among the most feared predators in the Empire.

The Barbary Lion was once found in the east of the Empire but has been extinct since Roman times; they were never numerous and many were killed in the arena for the entertainment of Roman spectators. Lepoards are still found throughout the forests of the Empire, where their excellent climbing gives them an advantage over their main competitors, dromeosaurs like Deinonychus. The Tyrannian Wolf is found only north of the Tyrannian mountains, out of the range of giant therapod predators, and possibly in some remote parts of New Imperial Tyrannia which is less well charted and explored than the east.

Tyrannian Culture

Tyrannian Language

Modern Tyrannians mostly speak Tyrannic Latin, a dialect of Latin distinct to that spoken by their ancient Roman ancestors. The dialect is only subtley different, with the most notable differences being the infusion of French, English and other languages' loan words. In Tyrannic Latin, Tyrannia is 'Tyrannium', Tyrannian is 'Tyrannorum', Emperor is 'Caesar' or, when referring to foreign leaders with that title, the same as in English, and Empire is 'Imperium'. Before Roman settlement of Tyrannia, native Tyrannian tribes spoke a language now known in Tyrannia as 'Old Tyrannian' or 'the Old Language'. Outside Tyrannia it is usually referred to as Native Tyrannian. Native Tyrannian consists of a number of symbols, much like Egyptian hieroglyphs though the Tyrannian system was much less advanced. For example, 'Yer', a Tyrannian tribal leader (often translated as 'Chief'), was written as ☼§□.

Religion in Old Tyrannia

The Empire's state religion is Tyrannian Orthodox Christianity. Tyrannian Orthodox Christians view Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and other Orthodox churches as heretical, and regard the Tyrannian Orthodox Church as the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church and the rightful succesor to the Eastern Orthodox Church of the Byzantine Empire. As such, the Church also views the Emperor of Old Tyrannia as Vicegerent of Christ on Earth, and follows a system of caesaropapism under which the Emperor is the supreme spiritual as well as secular authority, much as the British monarch is head of the Church of England. Besides the Emperor himself, the highest authority in the Tyrannian Orthodox Church is the Patriarch of Nova Latium, currently Alexius VIII. Despite calling itself 'Orthodox', the Tyrannian Orthodox Church has been largely isolated from the rest of the Orthodox world for centuries, and so many features commonly associated with the Orthodox churches, such as iconolatry, are actually unheard of in Tyrannia. The greatest Orthodox church in the Empire is the Emperor's Cathedral in Nova Latium City.

The next largest religion in the Empire is Tyranno-Roman paganism, veneration of the ancient Roman pantheon, with some elements of Native Tyrannian belief thrown in. The chief deity of Tyranno-Roman paganism is Jupiter. Nox, the primordial goddess of the night, is seen as one of the Empire's patron deities, the other being the Goddess Juno, Jupiter's wife, who was patron of ancient Rome and so is seen as patron of Tyrannia as well, since Tyrannia is regarded as Rome's legitimate succesor. There are dozens of other gods and goddesses, including many borrowed from other country's pantheons, including Isis from Egypt and the Celtic goddess Sul, combined with the Tyranno-Roman Minerva to become Sulis Minerva. Immigration has brought other religions, such as Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and so on to the Empire.

Many of Tyrannia's colonies have their own native religions. In Tyrannic Venezia, for instance, Roman Catholicism remains the dominant faith. In New Peace for Men, although Tyrannian Orthodoxy has spread widely among the populace the Chaos pantheon of Tzeentch, Khorne, Nurgle and Slaanesh is still worshipped by many. In Tyrannic New Judea, the overwhelming majority of the population practice Judaism. A characteristically Asian blend of religions- including Chinese folk religion or Shenism, Shinto, Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Heaven worship is the most widely practiced religion in Tyrannic East Asia. The Emperor is promoted by the ruling Legalist Party here as the Son of Heaven, Lord of Ten Thousand Years and occupant of all the other roles traditionally fulfilled by the Chinese and Japanese Emperors. The peoples of Phunkphresh and Zuye have their own native religious traditions.

Imperial Flag and other National Symbols

The first flag in Tyrannian history was the Imperial Standard of Emperor Marinus Romulus III, which doubled as the national flag of Old Tyrannia. The Empire had no other official flag and national identity was defined by loyalty to the Emperor, as in other autocratic monarchies. The double-headed eagle had been adopted as the imperial emblem to signify Tyrannia's succesion of the late Byzantine Empire as the centre of Christendom after Constantinople fell to the Turks; black had long been associated with Tyrannia, even before it became Fascist. Because Tyrannia was the westernmost of the ancient Roman provinces and the sun set in the West, the Romans associated Tyrannia with darkness and the night, calling it Terra Nocte ("land of the night"), and the Tyranno-Roman goddess Nox, primordial goddess of the night, is one of the Empire's patron deities in Tyranno-Roman paganism.

The first official flag of Old Tyrannia itself was introduced in the 19th century with the founding of the Imperial Parliament. The Emperor decided that the nation needed a new flag independant of the Imperial Standard. The new flag's design drew obvious inspiration from the British Union Flag, which caused some concern in London. An ambassador of the United Kingdom wrote to the Emperor, "it is the belief of Her Majesty's Government that... As the newly adopted Flag of the Empire of Tyrannia is blatantly based upon the flag of Great Britain and her empire... Action should be taken to avoid confusion between Britain and Tyrannia."

The current national flag of Old Tyrannia wasn't actually introduced until 1923, when it was the flag of the Imperial Fascist Party. The 'Black Union' design was dropped in 1900 at the insistence of the United Kingdom, and between 1900 and 1929 the Imperial Standard was once again used as the official flag of the Empire. In 1929, the 'golden globe' design was made the official flag of Old Tyrannia by Emperor Gaius Romulus III, who also adopted a new Imperial Standard featuring a black eagle clutching a fasces in its talons. Both have since become iconic symbols of the Empire.

The Empire's national flower is the Tyrannian cobra lily (Darlingtonia tyranicus), locally known as the florem serpentem or "snake flower." The Empire didn't have an official national flower until the 19th century, when Emperor Scipio VIII decreed it to be a national emblem alongside the eagle and the T. rex based on a possibly apocryphal story about Emperor Tiberius IV.

It is said that the Emperor was the first to discover the flower while campaigning against insurgent natives in the then-unexplored region of New Tyrannia to the west. Struck by the similarity the plant bore to the captive Egyptian cobras kept in the Imperial menagerie, he named it the florem serpentem and brought some seeds back to Nova Latium, the capital, with him. When the plants flowered, the Emperor reportedly enjoyed inviting naïve guests to smell the flowers, only to laugh jovially when they discovered they smelt of rotting flesh. The Emperor, when asked why he enjoyed the foul-smelling flowers so much, replied "there is no sweeter smell to the nose of a Tyrannian soldier than the reek of death." "No Sweeter Smell" (Nihil Odor Dulcior) remains the motto of the town of Serpentemia, named for the plants, to this day, and the lilies have spread throughout the Vitae Valley where Nova Latium City is located.

Tyrannian Poetry

"How beautiful art thou?
Oh, Empire of the Sun;
Land where the Sun sets;
Kingdom of the Free;
The Eternal Light.

Did God summon thou fourth?
Art thou Eden?
Yes, it must be;
For no more beautiful land exists,
Than Tyrannia,
Empire of the Sun.

Thou art mine blood,
Thou art mine soul.
All that I am,
Thou nurtured in thy womb,
Thou art mine mother,
Oh, Empire of the Sun."

- Servius Iuventius Brutus, Empire of the Sun (IMPERIUM SOLARUM)

"The black coat of the panther glistens;
From the darkness, the serpent listens.
By day the birds stay quiet and still,
And bats sleep calmly beneath the hill.

All life upon our blessed Earth,
Lies still and worships in harmony,
For you, my prince, my Tyrant King;
Ruler of all I see before me.

What are you, oh King of Beasts,
Cat or Dragon or Serpent or Fish?
I fear thee, yet I love thee;
For in you I see all that I wish.

Oh, how I see in thou;
Might and wealth and glory,
Splendour resurgent in the golden sun,
Dance, dance, dance for me."

- Vibius Terrentius Culleo, Tyrannosaurus Rex

What fear hath death?
I fear not Pluto's grasp.

Only small men die,
Who are forgotten;
For true immortality
Comes from the memory.

So I fear not Pluto's grasp.

Though in body I may die,
The soul survives
So long as my name is remembered
And my deeds are often told;

Then I shall not fear Pluto's grasp.

For only the cowards are doomed to eternal torment.

I need not fear Pluto's grasp,
For all that Thanatos' swift wings might bring me
Are the lush fields of Elysium

And I shall live forever more.
And I shall know Victory,
Even in Death.
- Gaius Publius Metellus the Elder, Pluto's Grasp (CAPERE PLUTONIS)

My nation exists in the real world, but dinosaurs survived here, hence the lack of large mammalian predators.

We can't help but notice the prominence of Dinosaurs in Old Tyrannia, this shows that there are still some nations on the Motherplanet where Dinosaurs continue to live. Interesting. We are noting this.

Yeah, apparently I'm now famous. The other week, I got called a 'superpower', and the 'dark horse' of the forums, by two different nations. I was also told people are 'terrified' of me. I suspect no one will know my name by this time next month. :p

Yeah, I should. My famousness has declined but I used to be quite a popular person in the Diplomacy part of the forum due to my unique style of RP'ing, my weird people and nation... Oh well, those glory days are over. :(

Yeah, apparently I'm now famous. The other week, I got called a 'superpower', and the 'dark horse' of the forums, by two different nations. I was also told people are 'terrified' of me. I suspect no one will know my name by this time next month. :p

Yup, thus is the fate of NSers. Our 15 minutes of fame might be 15 days but after that, we are as unknown as Mr. Li who lives in China.

That's not too bad, so long as I get to be as rich as him too.

Wonderful factbook you got there.

A few questions:

1. What are the relations between the Tyrannian Orthodox Church and the state (MT)?
2. Just for the heck of it, I'm going to ask if I could be mentioned somewhere. We fought once, remember? New Imperial Tyrannia (at first) and Old Tyrannia (after you forgot NIT's password) were invading Seculartopia, I was aiding in their defense, et cetera...

The Empire keeps out of religious affairs, the Church out of political affairs. The only real link is that the Church sees the Emperor as the Holy Roman Emperor, the Co-ruler of Christ on Earth; the Emperor doesn't confirm or deny this, to keep the peace between Orthodoxy and the other major religion, Tyranno-Roman paganism.

I may add you next time I decide to update it.
