Tool for cartography

Postby Mariposa Morpho » Sat Jun 20, 2009 4:27 am

Dear all,

Are there any tools (commercial or free) to help design country maps and/or cities?
Which ones have you tried, which ones would you recommend?

Please advise
Cheers,

Sporting achievements:
Third in WC51. That's about it. I think we once won the inaugural Table Tennis World Cup as well?

Try MSPaint (windows only), GIMP (all OSs), Paint.net (windows only), Inkscape (all OSs), or Adobe Photoshop (windows or mac).

Seems to be aimed at creating island nations only. Is there any program that creates a continent and then does national subdivision?

No program will do everything for you, automatically. Most of us cartographers draw everything ourselves. AutoREALM will help with drawing coastlines, but I'm not aware of anything else.

I personally prefer Photoshop, which I'm using to create my map of Jordia. (http://i41.tinypic.com/2n87sht.png [1324x1068]) But, Photoshop costs a considerable amount of money, so buying it to make maps for NS is kind of stupid. Inkscape is a pretty good program, as it's also able to create SVGs, which are all the craze nowadays.

If you need help with things, Lineartinc might be a useful place to start.
