I'm 62 and I love chocolate milk. I have it an average of twice a week. I think it does no harm - It gets calcium and vitamin D into the kids. If you're worried about them getting fat, campaign to reintroduce physical activities at recess. Really, when I was a kid, we had regular milk, but we also had ice cream - we didn't pack on the pounds because we were playing - tag, dodgeball, softfall, kickball, hopscotch, jump rope. The problem is as much the lack of exercise kids get as it is the food they eat. Jeez, let the poor things have something!

Numbers written with an apostrophe are in dozenal unless otherwise noted.
For example, 0'3 = 0.25, and 100' = 144.

Ratios are measured in perunums instead of percent.
1 perunum = 100 percent = 84' percent

Indeed.http://www.nutrientfacts.com/searchfood ... ular&var=5

That 60 calories adds up. And it's primarily in added HFCS, which is problematic in and of itself. (I'd be surprised if the corn lobby isn't helping the dairy lobby w/this behind the scenes.)[/quote]

Thanks for the info!

But i still don't see those buttons, so, oh well....

Thanks for the helpful hints.

They could make the cues a liuttle more obvious, though.

Doing a quick google I found chocolate milk to have 33% less added sugar than soda pop. So go milk. I think it would be great to lower that sugar content a little more but even without doing that chocolate milk is one of the most nutritious things kids are going to love so I say keep the chocolate milk in the schools.

but...but...they might get in jured!

Think of the liability!

In my day, the big playground toy was "the Strides". These were jointed metal ladders hung from a rotating spindle.

Kids did not just climb and swing on them, they used them as weapons for mutilation.

yet, we were happy and reasonably healthy.

If you were leaking red liquid, they would disguise it with a dose of iodine or merthiolate.

There are any number of school districts who have banned unhealthy foods, generally from elementary schools. No more vending machines stocked with soda and candy. Many rural elementary schools don't have cafeterias anyway, so parents are advised to not pack unhealthy things in the children's lunches. No cookies, no fruit candies, etc. Children learn about nutritional labels so they can spot the high glucose juices with little real juice versus the real juice with no added sugars. Civilization as we know it is not falling apart.

When my mom decided to switch me and my sister from chocolate milk (it's all we'd drink) to regular milk, we refused. For a while. She played a little "weaning" game with us where she'd put in a drop or two of chocolate syrup. Not enough to really make much of a difference, but we bought it. Eventually we just got used to drinking regular milk.

Kids are not allergic, or genetically predisposed to avoiding healthy food. Bad eating habits are the fault of parents, and school environments which do little to discourage unhealthy habits. That can be changed, without a lot of fuss.

It seems to me that most of the people crying about this are adults. That's sort of sad, really.

When one Connecticut school district got rid of chocolate milk, the rate of over all milk consumption dropped 67%. Our kids may lose essential nutrients that they may not receive if they don’t drink milk.

http://www.examiner.com/x-5694-Chicago- ... gular-milk

So maybe the question should be, what alternatives are you offering?

News Channel 7 asked Pet Milk representative Roger Staton about the controversy. He says, “The majority of the milk that is sold in schools today is low sugar and low fat milk, so the qualms there if it being high in sugar is not there.“

As for that 40 more calories in chocolate verses white? McGaha says, “That’s a low price to pay if they’ll drink it.“ It’s the only way you are going to get Brittany to pick milk. She says, “I won’t ever drink regular milk.”

Chocolate milk The National Dairy Council launched a campaign this week called "Raise Your Hand For Chocolate Milk."

It's a response to the recent call from parents and nutritionists around the country to pull the sugary drink from school menus.

Opponents of chocolate milk say that its presence in schools contributes to childhood obesity and unhealthy eating habits.

Organizations like the National Dairy Council say the small amount of added sugar in flavored milk is a fair trade for the nutrients provided.

According to TheDailyPlate.com, one cup of non-fat chocolate milk has 140 calories. The same amount of one-percent white milk has 120 calories.

According to TheDailyPlate.com, one cup of non-fat chocolate milk has 140 calories and 27 grams of sugar. The same amount of one-percent white milk has 120 calories and no sugar.

In its 2005 dietary recommendation report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture gave chocolate milk the green-light, saying:

Sugars can improve the palatability of foods and
beverages that otherwise might not be consumed. This may explain why the
consumption of sweetened dairy foods and beverages and pre-sweetened cereals is
positively associated with childrens' and adolescents' nutrient intake.

Obviously chocolate milk is a positive alternative to sodas and energy drinks.
