Although we may not have been reporting on it, four of Kansas's native sons and daughters have been taking on the world in the little-known sport of curling. Team Barry, consisting of Cody Barry, McKayla Barry, Joseph Langsford and Erica Hawkins, has advanced to the group stage of the First International Curling Championship in Lei, Hanalia. They advanced by defeating Union Isle, a strong knockout phase contender, in a nail-biting 6-5 match. The game came down to the last throw of the last end. We asked Cody Barry to describe his thoughts at the moment he released the stone.

"I just knew we needed to hit a takeout and have the stone land right in the middle of the house. My guys swept good for me today," Barry, 32, concluded.

Hopefully for the future of Kansan curling, this article will inspire many youth across the Former State. Many more will also be inspired if Team FASK wins the entire tournament. For now, Barry says, "I'll just be looking to relax over the weekend."

Hanalia slide through to Quarter Finals

The first week of The First International Curling Championships ended with Hanalia qualifying in fourth position for the Quarter Finals beginning tomorrow. After a disappointing loss of 7 - 10 to Free South Califas on Friday the team were lucky to make the cut. 5 matches on the last day were for qualifying positions so as you can imagine the atmosphere in the National Arena was electric. "It was disappointing to see great teams like Union Isle and Free Swiss States go out" said skip Jonas Mellon, "but we're so glad we got through!". The home team are expected to play Raxillion, the 5^th place qualifying team, in order to progress to the Semis on Tuesday. Unfortunately in the group stage Hanalia lost to their Raxillion opponents in a closely fought 6-7 match but junior teammate Noah Birdsell is "looking forward to the challenge they represent". Team FASK is doing quite well in their campaign for curling glory. They reached the semifinals of the First International Curling Championship earlier today, winning 9-6 over Weatherdon. The Kansans, who have been on a Cinderella run throughout the tournament, will participate in the semifinals tomorrow against Belacruck. Not much is known about the team from Belacruck, but the members of Team Barry insist that this does not mean that the Belacruckers will be pushovers.

"They're pretty good. I mean, they got this far, right?" said McKayla Barry, member of the Kansan team. "We'll still probably kick their [butts] though."

"We have great respect for our opponents, especially at this stage of the competition, you know?" Cody, McKayla's husband and skip, chimed in. "Whatever happens, we'll be happy with the result."

The other semifinal match, which takes place earlier tomorrow is between Reen and Hanalia, the hosts.

Well, it looks like our little curling friends from Colby have advanced even further in the ICC. Team Barry won a close match against Belacruck today in the semifinals, requiring some last-end heroics from Joseph Langsford and Cody Barry. This means that they will face a tough team from the host nation, Hanalia. Team FASK lost to Hanalia in the group stage, but the team is confident that the result will please the fans back home.

"I really feel good about this," Cody Barry, skip, said earlier today. "We're on a, what? Three-game winning streak? Yeah. So we're pretty hot right now. But if there's anyone who could stop us, it's them [Hanalia]."

Teammate Joseph Langsford, who also participated in the late rally, had this to say about the match on Wednesday: "I think that no matter the score, at the end of the day, we'll be having a lot of fun out there. We may have the crowd against us, but I'm sure there'll be a bunch of Kansans rooting us on back home. I think it'll be full of surprises. Know what, I know it'll be full of surprises. I promise there'll be a surprise."

The Grand Finale

I need not remind you how wonderfully Hanalia beat Reen in their semifinal match by 7 points to 3. The match recorded the highest viewing audience the nation has ever seen with just under 80% of Hanalians watching the match. Not only was the game a thrill to watch it also secured the home team a place in the Grand Final to be held tonight bringing the Curling Championship Trophy even closer to our fingertips. No matter what the outcome of tonight's match the championships will always be regarded as a complete success. They have had the nation combine over a common denominator and

caused Tube train passengers to break into spontaneous conversation with their neighbours

Team FASK played a close match today in the First International Curling Championships in Lei, Hanalia. However, the result was not what many Kansans would have hoped for. Team Barry lost 6-7 to Hanalia, which had beaten the team earlier in the group stage of the competition.

"We said that we had no regrets going into tonight," said skip Cody Barry. "We still feel like we accomplished a lot here in Lei and helped to grow the sport back home."

However, not all was sad for the Kansans today. After the game, vice-skip Joseph Langsford proposed to teammate and second Erica Hawkins. As you may expect, Erica said yes.

"I said there would be a surprise, didn't I? I'm just happy I didn't get rejected," said Langsford, laughing heartily.

As the First International Curling Championships, a few things can be taken away for the team from Colby. One: they're not as bad as their humble origins would have you believe. They have shown themselves on a world stage. Two: the sport can be grown in Kansas. And finally, three: they know that Hanalia can be beat. Kansas will return for the second edition, that is for sure.

A Complete Success

The last 8 days were wonderful in the eyes of all Hanalian even skeptics before the competition agree that it was great. The drama never ended from collapsing on the sheet in the group stage from a Swiss team member and an accepted proposal after the Grand Final insured that second place finishers Team FASK from Kansas got a round of applause and a stadium full of wolf whistles! The outcome couldn't have gone better for the hosts the match left sepectators on tender hooks the whole evening as it could have gone to either team throughout the game after a solid start from Kansas. The Kansans will be willing to come again when it is once more up to Hanalia to host the tournament. Well done team! You did it!
