Alstaete Family Rink to Join Curling Championships
by Martan Inglan, Sports Columnist
WEST CAPITOL DISTRICT

Once again, the Alstaete family has solidified their place as the top curling rink in Weatherdon. This marks their sixth All Weatherdon Bonspiel victory in the past 10 years, where they have maintained an impressive 73 and 8 record. Because of this, they will make their way to Hanalia to compete in the First International Curling Championships!

Throwing first will be Randy Alstaete. Traditionally, Randy has thrown as the Vice, directing his son, Norrin. Filling the role of Second will be Randy's wife, Britannie. She has always thrown second, and this will be no different. For the first time, Erica, Norrin's wife, will throw as the Vice. Norrin will take charge of the rink once again as the Skip, in what will be their first International Championships.
Runner Up - Copa Rushmori IX, XI

TOPEKA TRIBUNE

Although, you may not know it, the sport of curling has a rich history in Kansas. For decades, players of this "chess on ice" have thrived in curling hotspots around the nation, mostly in rural western Kansas. Now, as the first International Curling Championship approaches, western Kansas's best will take on the world's best.
Enter Team Barry, a group of friends from the small town of Colby. They will represent Kansas as Team FASK at the Championships, which take place in Lei, Hanalia. The team itself is comprised of two couples, Cody and McKayla Barry, and Joseph Langsford and Erica Hawkins. McKayla is the lead, while Hawkins throws second. Langsford throws third and serves as vice-skip. Rounding out the team is Cody, who serves as skip and therefore, the team's namesake.
Mr. Barry had this to say about competing in the Championships: "It's an honor. It really is. Representing Kansas. I'm proud."

It All Begins Tomorrow

Tomorrow for the first time in the countries history Hanalia will host an international competition. The eagerly awaited International Curling Championships will hold its first edition in Lei. The competition will begin with a round robin group stage this week and end with the finals over the first half of the next week with the final occurring on Wednesday. The Hanalian team, headed up by experienced skip Jonas Mellon (31), have been randomly drawn into pool 3 along with Lymantatia, Free South Califras, Raxillion, The Former American State of Kansas and their first opponents Union Isle. Lead, Shannon Leventhal (24), says "I hope that we'll be able to start the competition off with a convincing win over the Union Isle team. It will really fuel the enthusiasm that has been building around the competition!". Mellon added, "The public have been great. At any of the promotional events we've been to they've all wished us the best of luck." His junior teammate Noah Birdsell (25) said how he hoped, "the competition will really promote Hanalia on the international stage as a vibrant place to visit and in sporting circles. I understand that this is a curling competition but all Hanalian athletes should feel the benefit from hosting an event such as this.". The final member of the Hanalian team is 29 year old Katy Beaudet. She "just wants to get started" and thinks that she is "in the best possible condition" that she could be in. Another match to look out for is the family affair of Weatherdon which has entered a team of two couples. The ones to watch could be the team from Kansas, who will play Hanalia later on in the week, but they say they are "ready to take on the world's best".

Curling: The next sport of the Swiss?
Though many sources will claim that association football, swimming, or perhaps rowing are the future sports of the Free Swiss States, it only takes a look at the data to show otherwise. The fastest growing sport is in fact a rather, for the moment, obscure sport known as "Curling." The game, which involves sliding huge stones over a sheet of ice towards a target, is little known in Switzerland but has become played in certain communities across the country due to its strategic and challenging nature. In fact, a Swiss team has already been selected to represent Switzerland in an International Curling competition.

If curling continues at its current rate of growth, it will soon overtake football as the nation's leading sport. The upcoming competition, then, may be curling's chance to break from obscurity and enter the mainstream life.

TOPEKA TRIBUNE

The Kansas national curling team kicks off, or rather, throws off its International Curling Championships campaign today against Lymantatia. Not much is known about the Lymantatians, but Team Barry cannot expect them to be a pushover. "We can't take any match lightly," said McKayla Barry, the team's lead. "Even to make it to the Championships is something that a lot of teams would only dream of. They're pretty good. But we'll kick their [butt]."
If you happen to have the curling fever, there is other action taking place today as well. One match to watch is also in Pool 3.The hosts Hanalia will be taking on Union Isle. It will be interesting to see if the host nation's curling pride will show through in its opening match.

TOPEKA TRIBUNE

Team FASK's first match in the First International Curling Championships was a success. Team Barry narrowly won out against Lymantatia, 7-6. Lead McKayla Barry had this to say about her country's victory: "Okay so maybe we didn't kick their [butts]. So what? We still won. Hanalia's next." Mrs. Barry then proceeded to scream and jump around. One can assume that her words, somewhat hastily spoken, were the result of an adrenaline rush that can only be brought on by the sport known as curling.
Indeed, Hanalia is next for Team Barry. Whether or not they will be defeated remains to be seen. They won 7-5 against their first-round matchup, Union Isle. However, another team in Pool 3 is making a splash. Raxillion crushed Free South Califras 9-5. Whether or not this is a fluky win against a weaker opponent is yet to be seen.
Indeed, there are still many questions about the 1st ICC, but it has only begun; those questions will be answered in time.

Swiss Sweeper Out With Fatal Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Basil Gazette
A member of the international curling team, Joseph Aldron, was cut from competition after collapsing after his match. It was revealed that Aldron was suffering from the incredibly deadly carpal tunnel syndrome, which often emerges in sports that involve a lot of rigorous hand motion. Aldron, who is a sweeper for the Swiss "curling" team, reportedly has to engage his wrist (the source of the carpal tunnel) multiple times per competition. Said Aldron, "I could feel the pain starting pretty early on. But I knew I had to keep sweeping. I might die now... but at least we won the match. You know how it is. Curling is everything."

Curling, which has often been described as a "cult sport," has been growing rapidly in Switzerland for the past few years.Whether it will continue to do so is a matter of speculation, but it is clear to all that it invokes a huge, and somewhat fanatical level of dedication from its players.

A Perfect Start

Yesterday, in the first round of the eagerly awaited International Curling Championships taking place at the National Arena in Lei, the Hanalian team posted a 7 -5 win over their opponents from Union Isle. The match was closely fought and here's a run down on the action. In the opening end with a last throw advantage the home team put themselves a touch ahead with a near perfect delivery from Leventhal. A blank end followed but no score was the least of the home team's worries as with the next three ends in a stroke of utter brilliance the rivals posted scores of 1, 1 and 2. Unfortunately play was then suspended because over on another sheet and in Pool 2 sweeper Joseph Aldron of the Free Swiss States collapsed just after the conclusion of his match which, despite the problem, was won by a staggering 8 points to 5. He was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, which can be very dangerous even fatal, and the atmosphere could only be described as disheartened after this event not helped by the fact the home team was now trailing by 3 points.

The short break obviously had the desired effect of stalling the momentum of the Islanders but the national team didn't take full advantage of the small interruption only being able claw back one point in the ensuing end but leveling the score after the seventh. All was still to play for going into the closing stages of the match. Unable to sustain momentum the Union Isle team posted a single point at the eighth and a blank end ensured an exciting finale. 2 points were need to secure the win but with one stone remaining each it looked as though only a draw would be accomplished. Fortunately luck was with the Hanalian team and the Union Isle stone fell short by an almost unthinkable length. It was there for the taking, all the pressure was on Leventhal so hopes were high that she would repeat the performance from the first end. As she delivered the stone a collective intake of breath was heard around the stadium amid the utter silence. It looked bad heading straight for the Hanalian guard stone and with great power and speed the two collided.

Most of the fans let out a groan while whoops and cheers also echoed through the stadium with some Hanalian flags waving high. In a brief moment of confusion eyes turned to the ice. With the home team in full celebration it didn't take long for the spectators to realize that the risky strategy had paid off. Both stones had landed inside the scoring zone and so the final end went with three points to Hanalia leaving the final score at 7 - 5. The thriller of a match has gripped the nation and support for Team Hanalia and the competition has grown enormously with the victory. All hope that the team will win the next match against Kansas, the skip Mellon said this after the match, "I'm over the moon with our performance but we cannot allow ourselves to get overconfident or relaxed about it. Our next opponents Team FASK are confident after their win over the Lymantatian team."

Elsewhere in the competition Belacruck were defeated by Zavlia with a huge margin of 2 to 9 leaving them with zero points for the competition and a point difference deficit of 7. Other than our own team and that of Kansas winning in Pool 3 Raxillion top the group by beating Free South Califras by 5 points to 9 gaining them 3 competition points and a point difference of plus 4. Weatherdon's hopes vested in the family affair of Team Barry also got off to a running start with a 10 - 6 win over Weatherdon.

Curling Fanatic Attempts to Blow Up Swiss Parliament
The Swiss Daily

Yesterday, shocking news from the capital as we hear a rogue militant acting solo tried to blow up Parliament with a casket of dynamite and a cigarette lighter. Though he is currently in maximum security prison, reporters were able to reach him and interview him as to why he would possibly try to commit such an act. The man, whose name is at this time not available to be released, claimed that the Swiss Government was not doing enough to support the international curling team.

"Those b@$&@#!$ aren't doing enough for our boys in the war!" the man reportedly said. "Here they are.... a... a 2-0 winnin' record. Winnin' 10-8 their last game, and what does the government do? Sit here... on their LAURELS, and... ya know people are DYING out there, every day... we gotta support out boys man..."

The man, who is clinically insane, was no doubt tragically misled by a false article published in the Basil Gazette a few days prior claiming a curling player had died of carpal tunnel related injury after participating in a curling event. As our educated readers would know, carpal tunnel is not fatal in the slightest. We highly criticize the Gazette for allowing such a piece of absolute trash to be published, and with such obvious, and unfortunate consequences.

TOPEKA TRIBUNE

Maybe the loss was out of their hands. Maybe the home-crowd advantage was too much to overcome. Whatever the reason, Team FASK came up short in their match against Hanalia, the hosts of the First International Curling Championship.

Team Barry, which lost 7-10 earlier today, tried to remain optimistic when asked about the game during the van ride back to the Hilton Lei. "It's really tough to go in against a team that's got everything going for them, you know?" said Joseph Langsford, vice-skip of the team. "I mean... Oh God, don't cry Erica..."

Several minutes later, the sobbing woman in question, Erica Hawkins, had this to say about the loss. "I got intimidated, I think. The fans were just too much. I just hope the fans back in Kansas are cheering just as loud for us. We miss everyone back in Colby. Every day and night I thank Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior for this opportunity."

Though Team FASK may not have been all smiles after the last match, there may be happy times ahead. Their next opponent is Free South Califas, currently winless. This is not to say that the team will be a pushover. After all, only two games have been played, and that is certainly not enough to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of each team. All that we can do is look to the future and hope.

OOC: Sorry about that Free South Califas, if I change it the results table will be messed up and I wouldn't know how to fix it again. Once more I apologise but you're going to have to remain as Free South Califras for the time being. In the knockout stages it should be rectified.

RP is closed for the time being till the results are posted.

Massive Riot over Curling Loss in Berne, Twenty Missing; Presumed Dead
Basil Gazette
Though the sport remains unknown by many, to its fans it is as important as life. When the massive television screens set up in the city square showed the Swiss team losing in a close game to Anollasia, the mob went crazy. Windows were smashed, millions of dollars of damage were done and banners were flown saying "The Curling Revolution is upon us." After about half an hour, police arrived on the scene, only to be confronted with piles of bodies and intoxicated protesters.

In the international competition, Free Swiss States remains in the Top 2, though only by goal difference. It will be a close match to qualify, and we can only imagine the terrible things that will come to pass if the team fails.

TOPEKA TRIBUNE

Crushing defeat came once more to Team FASK at the First International Curling Championships in Lei. The Kansans were dismantled 6-11 by Free South Califas, a previously winless team.

"I really have no excuse this time," said Joseph Langsford. "There were no fans pressuring us, no homecrowd atmosphere. No excuses. The girls did a solid job. We stayed with them for a while there in the beginning but we just sort of fell apart after the first six or so ends. And then Cody had to go and have one of his moments. It was bad."

The moment Langford referred to occurred in the ninth end, when Cody Barry, the skip, threw a broom on the ice, prompting a delay of six minute for ice resurfacing. This is an uncommon event in a sport where sportsmanship is held in high esteem. When questioned about the incident, Barry only responded, "I made a mistake, but damn, we shouldn't have lost that. They were winless."

To finish on a high note, things are looking up for the team from Weatherdon. They lead Pool 1 with a perfect record and 9 points, the highest in the tournament.

A Disappointing Loss but a Close Match

Yesterday our team lost 6-7 to Raxillion in the ICC. The match was closely fought but in the end the opponents were just too good for the foursome. Although the loss puts and end to the 100% winning streak the Hanalian team have been enjoying it is still possible that they will qualify for the knockout stage. With two more matches to play they lie top of their group although this alone will not automatically qualify them. By winning two games they have earned 6 competition points and are moved to joint fourth overall with point difference. We wish them the best of luck in their upcoming match against the Lymantatians later today.

Sorry I've not had time to RP, I'm not a curling person. We're having a pretty terrible campaign.

TOPEKA TRIBUNE

Team FASK has tasted victory once more at the Curling Championships. The team of two couples defeated a team from Raxillion 9-6 today in Lei. The Kansans led most of the match, and the Raxillionites never really came close. The curlers from Colby appeared overjoyed about their success. This was most evident when teammates Joseph Langsford and Erica Hawkins, second and third respectively, engaged in a minute-long act of kissing on the ice directly after the game.

"I just felt really good, and it looked like Erica did too," said 29-year old Langsford. "Hopefully that's on all the newspapers back home. Imagine that. Me in a newspaper."

However, Team Barry's run may be coming to a close. Tomorrow they face Union Isle, who dismantled Free South Califas today 9-4. This comes after the FASK's 11-6 loss to the Califasians yesterday. If Kansas pulls off an upset tomorrow, they may, with a bit of divine intervention, qualify for the knockout stage.
