"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few.

But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

Upon request of fellow battle-brothers, I have been entrusted to start the Warhammer 40,000 discussion thread, for all of your tabletop/gaming/lore needs.

Let us begin by a simple poll: Which of the factions of this universe do you identify yourself with?

I will begin, as I am an instrument of the Emperor's will. I am steel and I am doom. I am his bulwark against the Terror. I am a defender of Humanity.

I march for Macragge...

... And I shall know no fear.

Let the galaxy burn discussion begin!

Image

"Prepare thyself to enter a world of daemons and vile sorcery, of battle and death, of violence and of madness.

THIS IS A DARK age, a bloody age, an age of daemons and of sorcery. It is an age of battle and death, and of the world's ending. Amidst all of the fire and fury it is a time, too, of mighty heroes, of bold deeds and great courage.

AT THE HEART of the Old World sprawls the Empire, the largest and most powerful of the human realms. Known for its' engineers, sorcerers, traders and soldiers, it is a land of great mountains, mighty rivers, dark forests and vast cities. And from his throne in Altdorf reigns the Emperor Karl-Franz, sacred descendant of the founder of these lands, Sigmar, and wielder of his magical hammer.

BUT THESE ARE far from civilised times. Across the length and breadth of the Old World, from the knightly palaces of Bretonnia to the ice-bound Kislev in the far north, come the rumblings of war. In the towering World's Edge Mountains, the orc tribes are gathering for another assault. Bandits and renegades harry the wild southern lands of the Border Princes. There are rumours of rat-things, the Skaven, emerging from sewers and swamps across the land. And from the northern wildernesses there is the ever-present threat of Chaos, of daemons and beastmen corrupted by the foul powers of the Dark Gods. As the time of battle draws ever near, the Empire needs heroes like never before.

The fate of the world, be it damnation or salvation will soon be decided. This is a world of eternal war and fleeting glory. This is the world of Warhammer.

The gods of strife shall feast upon this day, and every day hence, until the end of time!"

Upon request for me as OP to allow both 40K and Fantasy discussion, I said "why not?" :p

Warhammer Fantasy needed its own introduction as 40K has in the OP, and therefore here it is.

I'm a conservative and individualist. I am now a follower of possibly the most liberal faction in 40k.

LONG LIVE TAU!!!

I find it hilarious how often 40k fans criticize the Tau as Weaboo Space Commies, when in reality the faction whose MO is most like the Soviet Union is the Imperium of Man. The God-Emperor of Man was basically a psyker version of Josef Stalin; mass-mobilize all of society to deal with the threat of being boxed in by historical forces previously beyond anyone's control.

"If you will not serve in combat, then you will serve on the firing line!"

Theres just something about everyday Humans going into combat against Armored, hulking, daemon-worshiping monsters, and even Daemons themselves (Ciaphas Cain rules.) that speaks to me.

Its because of the whole "All have a role in the greater good, all are one and all are equal in the common goal" sounds like communism. For the imperium, i saw a joke that it went from a stalinist atheist dictatorship under the emperor in the great crusade to a mass roman catholic dicatatorship when he was put in the golden throne after the heresy.

Dude, don't you get it? It's 40k.

In all seriousness, I am inclined to agree. However, the Soviet Union was more authoritarian too care about these things you call "economics", though I am a fan of the Imperium (Imperial Guard is my No. 2). It's more like the Tau are the violent version of Buddhists or something else that I can't remember.

The Tau are a very strange race politically. I'd describe their empire as a utilitarian caste-based aristocracy.

Tau Greater Good is basically space communism, because the various species are expected to do whatever they're good at for the sole reason that it's better for the whole.

At least the Imperium is human.

There's a canon ending to 40k? Like end-ending? Link or explanation would be great, as I can't find it through Google.

Necrons: "..."
IG: "In the Emperor's name!

Shame they will never actually move the whole to that. I want the emperor to be reborn, Would be fun to have another crusade, except the emperor knows what to do better and whatnot.

Ohoho, you did not just begin this. Oh no no no. Necrons are the only force the galaxy who can truly conquer the galaxy unopposed, and the day when all of the Necrons awaken, the Eye of Terror will close, Chaos will be exterminated in a single act of glory, all psykers will lose their abilities, the Eldar, Imperium, and Orks will instantly fall because their civilizations are based on pskyers (fuck you, Zombie God), the Hivemind will be disbanded and all Tyranids reverted to their feral states, and terror will be abundant through-out the Galaxy.

The Tau aren't warp-based, so I don't know about them. Necrons could just kill them in a land war due to superior tech. Yes you Tau tech wankers, Necrons have better tech.
