About Us

Chartered over one hundred and twenty years ago by Central Director Merle Elliott Schultz, Designwerks has grown from modest beginnings to become the most successful collection of centrally-planned industrial enterprises in Gholgoth. From its origins as a government-sponsored regulatory trust for mining, shipbuilding, and metalworking, the State Industries of Schultaria Prime have grown phenomenally in size and complexity. Initally, the aims of Designwerks were rooted in the desperate necessities of a state emerging from the ruins of war: generate hard currency while stemming a persistent exodus of manufacturing jobs from the fledgling USSSP by exporting heavy industrial equipment and raw materials to eager international consumers. From these beginnings, Designwerks has rapidly diversified into the cutting edges of science and engineering.

The oldest component of Schultaria's State Industries, Designwerks' Heavy Industry Division is responsible for mining, harvesting, processing, and manufacturing raw materials necessary to feed, power, and clad industry at home and abroad. One of largest industrial conglomerates in Gholgoth, Designwerks' plants are responsible for mining, smelting, and manufacturing least a third of all the iron, aluminum, copper, steel, and titanium used by the region's half trillion denizens.

Non-Petroleum Hydrocarbons

Lacking significant petroleum reserves, the United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime have invested heavily in “alternative” energy materials over the last ninety years as part of an approach towards complete independence from foreign petroleum production. One of the earliest liquid fuels proposed by Designwerks was Ethanol, and it initially proved its worth in strategic planning initiatives for state economists and the nation's Defense Forces. Though its energy input deficiencies were well noted by the State's scientific community, many Designwerks engineers saw Ethanol as a stopgap measure until more cost effective synthetic fuels and plastics could be produced. Nuclear Fuel - Fusion

Dideuterium Oxide, or Heavy Water, has been a staple component of nuclear physics since the discovery of fission, but has been largely relegated to a secondary role for most modern nuclear powers. Most modern uses for heavy water have been centered around controlling the chain reactions of Uranium reactors to generate power and produce Plutonium for nuclear weaponry. This militarization of Heavy Water, however, has kept this resource from widespread sale on the open market.

Thus was the case in Schultaria Prime, until recent experimentation in practical and stable fusion reactors gave Heavy Water new life. The purity and relative ease in storing and extracting elemental deuterium for fusion reactors makes Heavy Water an ideal candidate for nations who are either beginning to develop practical fusion experiments, or for more developed fusion-capable countries who demand purity for their power generators.

Nuclear Refinement

Developed seventy years ago as a means to refine bomb grade Uranium-235 for the nation's first nuclear weapons program, Calutrons operate by partitioning elemental Uranium through ionization and magnetic differentiation. Unlike gaseous diffusion, which is widely used for Uranium enrichment, Calutron plants can operate in less space with less demand for technically skilled labor. Designwerks' advances in the development of Molybdenum superconducting magnets, increasingly precise ionic manipulation, and more efficient methods of transforming Uranium chloride into useful nuclear fuel, have once again made Calutrons a viable component of any nation's fission program.

At the dawn of the Fission Age the earliest and most effective nuclear reactors of the time were difficult to manage - often prone to catastrophic failure because of corrosive, and flammable, graphite moderators. As early experimental reactors gave way to more sophisticated pressurized water designs a flurry of new moderating materials were being tested extensively by Designwerks and the Central Scientific Collective. Eventually researchers struck upon dideuterium oxide, or heavy water, as the most likely candidate to replace the nation's risky graphite reactor piles.

The use of heavy water offers several unique advantages to discerning customers. Unlike pressurized nuclear reactors that use conventional H₂O, heavy water allows reactor operators to use unprocessed uranium instead of attempting the politically riskier option of uranium enrichment. In addition heavy water is an important component for fusion research both as a raw material and a base component for tritium production.

After fifty years of design and experimentation, Designwerks' engineers have developed a facility to generate deuterium on an industrial scale. By utilizing a mutlistage process of electrolysis, sulfide chemical exchange, and vacuum distillation, these facilities can generate more heavy water per unit of energy than virtually any other facility on the market.

Davoor-Kronsen Nuclear Separation Capsule

Even with the most advanced waste reduction techniques on the planet, the United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime still generates some 2.78 billion m³ of unrecyclable material every year - most of it as ceramics or glass byproducts from thousands of plasma induction waste facilities. While the national government has passed legislation to find productive uses for Schultaria's ceramic waste in construction and national defense, the Schultarian Scientific Collective has been encouraging research laboratories to convert the nation's steady stream of refuse into useful raw materials. Doctor Kiishik Davoor, a Professor with the University of Schultaria Prime-Grosh'tex, designed a massively upscaled version of the Designweks Calutron Refinement Facility which has shown considerable promise in tackling the nation's waste problems.

By vaporizing materials with high energy electrons, a beam of ions is created that can be deflected by a series of magnetic fields corresponding to particular elemental groups. Through repeated deflections, the beam's matter begins to accumulate in specially designed nuclear separation capsules which, in turn, create pure elemental substances that are magnetically refined and completely reusable for modern industrial processes.

The United Socialist States of Schultaria Prime, with an average population density over 17,000 persons per km², has found it difficult to manage the ever growing waste problems of its population. Cooperating with The Eldaimovey Advanced Research Laboratories and Drugan Waste Handing Incorporated, Designwerks have helped to design a practical and economical facility as a substitute to burying waste in disaster prone landfills.

Utilizing ionized plasma torches, the waste that is deposited into these facilities are subjected to temperatures approaching 25,000 °C (~ 45,000 °F).
