Flag advice super thread

Since we've been getting several individual flag help threads lately, I figured it might be handy to give it its own thread, easy to find for both those who seek help, and those who like to give it.

Note that this is not a flag-makers thread.

For example, you have a lovely custom made flag, but feel it lacks something, it needs something more.

I've always thought my flag seemed a bit... off, somehow. Maybe it's that the black borders on the cross don't show up well against the blue, but I'm not sure.

Anyone willing to provide some constructive criticism or ideas as to how the design of my flag could be improved upon? Despite the above qualms, I'm fairly satisfied with it at the moment but am not averse to new ideas.

Switching between black and white borders around the blue causes the blue lines to be visually 'broken'. Even though the blue lines in the cross are straight, there is the optical effect that at the center of the cross the lines shift. This is a sign there's too much happening in your flag, in specific the contrast changes between the blue and the adjacent lines.

I also took the liberty of removing the pixelation, and aligned the stars.

Yep, that works too. The grey has a sufficiently low contrast change with the blue.

You might want to increase the contrast between the green and the blue.

The 'sun' looks better when centered in the middle. An off-center position works for the Japanese naval flag due to the stripes which function like rays. Another good reason for it to be off-center would be the placement of a symbol or other visual element.

Right now it appears far to cluttered for my tastes, and the colours clash far too much; that shade of yellow isn't a good choice. Less is usually more in flags; I'd keep the eagle and the cross, but change the colour scheme and relative sizes of the various sections. The rectangles on the left, for example, would look better as squares, and then if you want to keep the Iron Cross you could centre it properly.

With a bit more detail, yes, it is. But that would probably be better suited to the Factbooks and National Information forum, which is an in-character forum, than to an advice and criticism thread.

If I may Alyekra. The background stripe looks fine, the problem at least to my eyes are the symbols. The white section around them looks really off. However, if you were to get rid of the white, and put one symbol in each red corner section I think it would look much improved.
