Background: This ship had been originally commissioned by Dillard Industrial Logistics, a provider of logistics services to some of the leading defense companies in the world. With the great amount of military ships sold and shipped to clients, it became rapidly clear to DIL executives that shipping by means of a skeleton crew would be both expensive (in terms of both crew costs and fuel costs), and an alternative was soon sought.
The alternative came in the form of the semi-submersible Kurma-class transport, designed by Hammond Motors. As Hammond Motors had great experience building and selling cargo ships, whaling ships, and smuggling ships of a range of classes, they had little difficulty promoting their new design to Dillard.
Named after Kurma, Vishnu’s enormous titled avatar, the class lives up to its name. Five hundred meters long, the ponderous craft is capable of carrying up to five hundred thousand tons of cargo on its broad back. The location of its flotation structures means that it is not limited, in this context, by the length of its deck - it can carry enormous aquaculture farms, aircraft carriers, or oil tankers with equal ease.
Counterpiracy: While the Free Kingdom of Allanea is not bound by any World Assembly agreements against piracy, Hammond Motors respects the needs of countries that are so bound, as well as the general necessity of ships to be armed to deter attacks by pirates, terrorists, eco-terrorists and rogue state agents. For this purpose the Kurma-class is armed with Mark 51 VLS launchers, air defense weapons and dual-purpose cannon, as well as anti-torpedo launchers that reduce the risks of submarine attack.
Despite the aforesaid, the Kurma-class is not a warship. Hammond Motors does not recommend using Kurma-class in lieu of a dedicated military vessel, and recommends that users consult the appropriate international security reports while planning routes.
Crew comfort: The vast size of the Kurma enables the use of enhanced crew comfort facilities, including air conditioned facilities, satellite broadband internet uplink capacity (although, obviously the buyer will have to purchase their own Internet contracts), a crew R&R facility and gym, as well as a mini-swimming pool and a sauna. The R&R facility can also be used as a classroom for long-distance education if necessary or if required by union contracts.
