HIA 22b Lupny (Cobra) Interceptor Aerocraft

The HAD 22b Lupny (Cobra) served with distinction in many a border skirmish and war during the early 60's, and continued to be deployed aerocraft until the mid-eighties. Though production ceased in 2008 it continues to serve, mostly as an interceptor, in several air forces.

Powered by a single engine and designed on a simple airframe, these fighters are inexpensive but fast, suiting the strategy of forming large groups of quick strike fighters to overcome the technological advantages of more advanced aircraft.

The fighter is affordable and widely exported as the HAD 22b, often with foreign systems incorporated. Based on the expertise gained by this program, the wings of the HAD 22b have been changed to a unique "double delta" design offering improved aerodynamics and increased fuel capacity, and features a more powerful engine and improved avionics.

The new radar which is built by VCI (Verlaine Corporate Industries) only weighs an extra 1 kg (56 kg total), but the sector of scan has been increased to ±20 degrees from the original ±10 degrees of the previous system. The newer radar also had improved ECM and look-down and shoot-down capability, and can track 4 targets simultaneously while engaging one of four target tracked.

HAD 22/A-1: All-weather fighter with two 30mm guns and a HAD WP-7B engine. The forward-hinged canopy jettisoned with the ejection seat. Movable canards for better aerodynamic performance.
HAD 22/A-2: Enhanced ground attack capability. Multi-function display, which is located to the upper right corner of the dashboard.
HAD 22/A-3: Trainer.
HAD 22/A-4: Reconnaissance version. In addition to the photo reconnaissance, this aircraft was the first to have the domestically developed ESM reconnaissance pod.
HAD 22/A-5: Different missile launching rails that are compatible with the R550 Magic Air-to-air missiles.
HAD 22/B-1: Interceptor with VCI ICU-7A radar and HAD-13FI turbojet engine. One 30mm gun, and 2 under-wing pylons.
HAD 22/B-2: Interceptor with VCI ICU-7A radar and HAD-13FI turbojet engine. One 30mm gun, and 4 under-wing pylons.
HAD 22/B-3: Interceptor. Utilizing a fly-by-wire system to allow control over the aircraft's instabilities, and featured an advanced nav/attack system; new multimode radar; and a laser rangefinder system. The uprated engine and aerodynamics give the 22/B-3 impressive performance. VCI ICU-7A radar and HAD-13FI turbojet engine. One 30mm gun, and 6 under-wing pylons.
