Landintown, Autonomous Province of Aanglandia;
United Ardokian Commonwealth
On the fifteenth of January protests started in Landintown, the capital of Aanglandia (or the Autonomous Province of Aanglandia as it was known in Ardoki). Ever since the Ardokian invasion in 2014, separatist groups had been planning to overthrow the Ardokian invaders, their own 'Arab Spring'. However the presence of Ardokians in Aanglandia was an issue which divided the varying separatist groups. Ardokians had been present in Aanglandia since the times of the Greater Ardokian Empire over a hundred years ago, and now formed a sizeable minority. Some extreme separatist groups called for the deportation of all Ardokians, claiming they are loyal to Ardoki and complicit in the occupation. Other groups were more moderate, wanting to allow Ardokians to remain if they swear loyalty to Aanglandia. However these differences of opinion impacted the riots which would later spring out of the initial protests.
Ardoki was going through a period of instability. President Alistair Moriarty, the Ardokian dictator since 2002 and man responsible for the invasion and occupation of Aanglandia, was ousted by government officials as pro-democracy protests swept the Ardokian capital of Ardea. The new government, compromised of former officials in Alistair Moriarty's regime, promised democracy and freedom. However this was not to be, as thousands of former state officials were arrested on mass by the Ministry of Justice for their involvement in the former regime. This left Ardoki in the control of a provisional government, an alliance of the various government ministries under the control of civil servants. This new provisional government kept the country running, and made preparations for the planned general election in February; however could barely be noticed due to its lack of structure. Government ministries released public statements, however the provisional government itself did not, making Ardoki seem like some sort of feudal state with civil servants replacing lords.
The lack of any direction from the provisional government encouraged separatist groups in Aanglandia to start riots. At first, they were small, but began to become larger as more people saw. On 16 January, 10,000 protesters marched to the centre of Landintown. It was largely peaceful until that night, when extremists began rioting in the centre damaging public and private property. The riot police were obviously called out, and hundreds of injuries (on both sides) were reported as the rioters were slowly dispersed by the police. The next day, fresh riots began in Western Landintown after news of the supposed police brutality was released. Tensions were only inflamed when seventeen rioters were killed by the police, who were far too generous with the use of rubber bullets and tear gas canisters. A 42 year old policeman was murdered near midday by youths as he was on his way to work, which only encouraged the extremists in the separatist movement.
Reports of ethnic Ardokians being killed around Aanglandia began to come in by the 21st, with potentially hundreds killed in communal violence, ethnic Ardokians in the region begin fleeing to Landintown seeking better protection from violence. Police begin suppressing riots with live ammunition, almost a hundred rioters were killed in Landintown that night. The next day street battles between police and separatists continued in Landintown as rioters attacked the Legislative Assembly and Governor's House; soldiers of the 3rd Corps respond by massacring over 1,000 rioters. On the 23rd, the Ardokian Defence Forces High Command (ADFHC) ordered all Ardokian military forces in Aanglandia (1st Corps, 2nd Corps, 3rd Corps, 4th Corps) to withdraw across the border and await further orders. Lieutenant General P. B. Cody of the 3rd Corps disobeys orders, and states his intent to remain in Aanglandia to "defend the territorial soverignty of the United Ardokian Commonwealth and protect Ardokian civilians from Aanglandian fascists".
The 3rd Corps began ruthlessly crushing all riots and protests in the Landintown area, sending in armoured vehicles and soldiers to hunt down and kill what he termed 'fascist terrorists'. Parts of the city are levelled and tens of thousands of civilians are killed in massacres, while hundreds of thousands are interned in makeshift concentration camps. Ardokian paramilitaries are formed and armed by Lieutenant General P. B. Cody, and then begin a campaign to ethnically cleanse the Landintown region of Aanglandia with the cooperation of soldiers from the 3rd Corps. By 28 January, the 3rd Corps begins rounding up random Aanglandians and executing them in retaliation for Ardokian soldiers who died. Officers of the 3rd Corps who oppose the massacres are executed to strike fear into the soldiers while several agents of the Commonwealth Security and Intelligence Department are executed on charges of espionage and sabotage. The next day, a CSID assassination plot by a Colonel of the 3rd Corps was foiled and the officer was shot.
The provisional government remained silent on the issue, with various ministries offering condemnations and even threats to the 3rd Corps, it seemed as though there would be no intervention. The high command was worried about possible internal trouble in Ardoki proper, so had wanted to completely abandon Aanglandia as it was viewed as a potential burden. While the 3rd Corps remained in control of Landintown and the surrounding region, the rest of Aanglandia was unoccupied apart from police which had begun escorting Ardokian refugees towards Landintown. Ardoki did not want to remain in Aanglandia any longer, it was a burden. However would seperatist groups be able to rout the 3rd Corps?
