The Exquisite Corpse Project (Interest Thread)

Postby Achidyemay » Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:07 pm

Hello to everyone in the Portal to the Multiverse! Who's ready to RUMBLE!

Bust out them keyboards, it's time to lay down some sick story telling, get up in them feels, and play things out for comedic effect!

An interesting new Project for all the marbles!

Get involved today!

IC

What is an Exquisite Corpse?

In short, one person begins the story, then the next person adds onto it, then the next, and so on until the story is finished. Sometimes, the person is able to see what has come before, but usually, the person whose turn it is to add onto the project can only see the very last bit that was added. Just enough to ensure a smooth continuation of story, but not necessarily enough to influence what the next person will add.

It's a method for collaboration that allows multiple artists to work together to create something interesting and cool. I've seen it used to create art, poetry, and music. Now, this NS Summer, I think it's time to come together as a community to create a story that is unique and special.

Here is the Wikipedia page, a few examples of art done in this style, the extremely awesome Watsky video, even Rick and Morty got one.

How would this one work?
I want this to be as much of a community driven project as possible, so I'd like to invite all manner of P2TM writers and roleplayers to participate. As I see it, this is a three step process.

Step 1. Express interest in the project, get others involved, fill out an application, throw out potential ideas; in this way it is not much different from any RP on the platform.

Step 2. We put together a posting schedule. I'll maintain this and it will be in a post directly below this one. I think 1 post a day is a good speed to take this at, but it will be the first thing I'd like to vote on.

Step 3. We make it interesting. In order to make this a truly Exquisite CorpseTM Experience, I'm going to ask that all IC posts follow a formatting that will be outlined below. The purpose of this formatting will be to prevent the person who posts next from knowing exactly what transpired in the post above. Obviously, I can't stop them from peeking anyway, but I want to keep the option alive.

We do NOT need to:
 1. Create a list of characters, you can create any character at any time for any reason, and kill them just as quickly. Even the main character can be killed.
 2. Establish a story, any plot, or an arc beforehand; these things will arise naturally. I fully expect that a few "meanwhiles" or side events will happen, even.
 3. Establish laws or a world. The environment will be whatever you want. I expect there to be everything from supers to historical events to magic to slice-of-life and everything in-between!

Rules
 1. Respect is key; we're going to be dealing with a lot of different styles and skill levels, but at the end of the day we all need to respect the effort of those that make this forum great. I'm talking about you.
 2. I'm the OP, sort of a given.
 3. While you're free (and expected) to take the story in a totally different direction, use the paragraph that you've been left as a way to start your part of the story.
 4. Use the format that is outlined below in ALL IC posts.
 5. Avoid graphic, hardcore, or sexual content. The mods tend to try to keep things PG-13 around here.
 6. Only post in the IC when you are scheduled to post. If you post something and want to edit it later, you can edit as much as you want until your allotted time ends. If you miss your window, that's okay, you can reschedule at any time, but it's the next persons chance to go. If you schedule a time, and it approaches, and you realize you are going to be busy that day for some reason, let me know, and you can get rescheduled.

Style Guide
Hey, Welcome to the Style Guide, if you've made it this far, good on yah! This is one of two key elements that's really going to make this RP unlike anything that's ever been on P2TM before! Below is an example of what the IC should look like. The concept is simple,
Code: Select all

everything except for the very last paragraph. When it's your turn to post, your first paragraph should be a seamless transition from the last post, then you can fill it in with as many paragraphs of story as you like (min.1), then end with a final paragraph that is left just outside the spoiler. Minimum post length is three paragraphs.

When Samantha woke up, she could hear birds chirping outside her window, sunlight streamed through the window, and the smell of bacon wafted up the stairs. It was wrong, so wrong. As long as Samantha had been alive, she had lived in the city, and had woken every morning to the sound of the El trundling by. "Come downstairs, sweety, breakfast is almost ready." Her mother called. Her mother had been dead for four years.
Cautiously, Samantha exited the room, her socks sliding along the laminated wooden floor. The steps creaked underfoot as she made her way down from the loft. She was in some sort of cabin? It didn't make any sense to her. And the woman standing in the kitchen holding the pan of bacon was most certainly not her mother. Her mother had had curly red hair, same as hers, this woman had black hair, pulled backwards into a severe ponytail. "Where am I?" Samantha asked, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
"Darling, what do you mean?" The woman replied, a confused smile on her face.
"Where am I?" Samantha repeated, anger growing in her voice.
"Why, you are home, with me" The smile grew larger on her face. She set down the pan and wiped her hands on her apron.
"I am not home!" Samantha shouted, leveling a finger at the women with the ever widening smile.
"But you are dear." The woman cocked her head, her smile so wide it went from ear to ear, splitting her head in half when she talked.

In anguish, Samantha attempted to flee from the building. She tried for the door, but it was shut and barred, the metal latch jiggled uselessly in its holder. The woman rounded the island in the kitchen, her eyes staring unblinkingly at Samantha, her smile growing wider and wider, till it wrapped around her head, then it kept going.

Niccoli wrote:
Thinking on her feet, she threw open the woodbox and grabbed a log from inside. Hurling it with all of her might, she sent it crashing through the window; shards of glass glittering among the snow. She lept through the window, the cold winds howling almost as ferociously as the woman inside the cottage.

Samantha had only made it a few steps when she heard the beating of a chopper overhead. The Black Hawk thundered overhead, whipping the snow into a frenzy and shaking the trees. It landed just as the front door of the cabin splintered into a hundred tiny pieces. What emerged was foul and demonic, black smoke and horns, wearing the skin of the woman like a loose shawl.

"C'mon, girl, we need to go, now now now." It was a tall american soldier, Captain Alexander deGray, his face covered in war paint. He had stepped from the helicopter and he was gesturing to it currently. One look at the towering demoness was all it took to convince the girl that anywhere was better than this. She took the Captain Alexander's hand, and he pulled her toward the helicopter, struggling in the deep snow. The demoness shrieked and even the soldier's blood ran cold, but he had a duty and he pressed on, strapping the girl in, while shouting Go! Go! GO! into his headset.

They were in the air, and the Captain deGray gave a tender look at the girl. She reminded him of his daughter and he secured her buckles and a headset to her head so that he could talk to her. But the celebration was cut short. The chopper was already fifty feet off the ground when it came to a shuttering halt, the demoness had grabbed the tail of the chopper and was pulling it down!

Captain Alexander acted quickly, he swiveled in his seat and brought the witch between his iron sights, spraying her body with 13 screaming lead bullets per second. She screamed again in response, but he kept up the fire and eventually she relinquished. He tossed a red flare down at her feet, and red smoke poured out of it, mixing into her black smoke. The chopper blades beat at the air and the Black Hawk rose into the sky, pulling away south.

Captain Alexander called it in over the telecom. Thankfully, there were B-12s in the airspace. As the chopper got clear, the stealth bombers dropped into sight, carpet bombing the cabin and the surrounding pine forest. And the demonic witch, who screamed in agony before succumbing to the shelling.

Marry wrote:
The Witch was gone, thank God the Witch was gone. I remembered the first time I had ever set eyes upon her. It had been at my 15th birthday party. God, who would've thought it was going to end like this. In Jackson Forest. Anyway, she had been at my 15th birthday party, which was coincidentally the day of my Awakening. Everyone develops powers sometime, they say, I suppose I was supposed to be lucky that I got mine then, in front of everyone. Makes it easier then having to tell everyone individually when they're all there anyways.
We were getting punch, and then suddenly, the punch started to move. I thought it was my friend Ginger, she can control fruit, it was a weird power, but she got the power early, when she was like five. We had formed our first super hero squad, heh, if you could call it that, as soon as her powers developed. We called ourselves The Fruit Fighters, because we were such huge fans of The Fighters, I guess. But, no, the punch was all me. I was a telekinetic. A broad telekinetic mind you. By day two, I could control fruits better than Ginger ever could.
She introduced herself as Mrs. Tarly. I remember her tight pantsuit and the lack of ring on her finger. I just thought she was one of my mom's colleagues. It wasn't until much later that I realized the Witch was part of a much larger organization, an organization that I got sucked into, just like my mother and father.
I miss them.
Not that the Witch cared. She kidnapped me the day after my party. I had never met her before, it was like she knew when my powers were going to manifest. but that's supposed to be impossible, isn't it. No on can predict an Awakening. She took me into Jackson Forest, she had a camper there. I tried to escape, but her powers were weird, shadowy. She could force me to do things I never would've done.

Look, I admit it. Austin was me. I did that, I killed those people. But you have to believe me that she did it. It was all her. I never would've done it, I never would've even thought myself capable. But then she got inside my head, and now, now I'm glad she's dead.

You get the idea.

Hmm. I've seen this done before off-site. Glad to see a fresh idea make its way to NS!
Anti-this stupid trend of putting political beliefs in signatures. You're all kids playing big man on a rip-off of the Civilization series. If you all knew how to influence policies and run nations you wouldn't be on a Mongolian basket weaving forum (this one). Time to grow up, children.

Well met Endem, I really like your style of writing.

I suppose we might as well discuss post rates and all that. 24 hours seems like a reasonable time to everyone, or do we want more or less?

Hope others want to join us for this. It sounds really fun.

The title is definitely catchy. It drew me in. But the concept is fun.

I have that scene in my head from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the old guy says, "I'm not dead yet. I feel happy. I feel happy... "

A great scene, to be sure.

I first came across this as just the Watsky song, and I thought it was just a cool song title, but then the Rick and Morty video with the same concept came out and I was like, maybe this is a thing. And sure enough, it was.
