The Civil War: Dawn of the Confederacy
The year is 1864. Still reeling from the defeat at Gettysburg a year before, Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia have fought brilliantly in the Overland Campaign. Lee's spectacular tactics have resulted in bloody Confederate victories at the Battle of the Wilderness and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Despite this, the Union army forced Lee's troops back until they were forced to retreat across the James River. However, when the Army of the Potomac began besieging the city of Petersburg, Lee moved his army to Petersburg and forced a decisive battle earlier than Grant wanted. The ensuing Battle of Petersburg was a crushing defeat for the Union, with casualties reaching 20,000 on both sides in 2 days of fighting. Grant was forced to retreat across the James River and fight for his life on ground they had just won. After a protracted campaign, on August 11, 1864, the Army of the Potomac fell back through the Wilderness, finally managing to escape Lee's army. With these stunning victories, the Confederacy had suddenly stabilized their situation, and most importantly, these recent events had caused Europe to develop an interest in the war.
The Union and the Confederacy have reached out to their allies, and it seems that the nations of Europe are all choosing sides.
The American Civil War has gone international.
